I don't know if you have ever heard of St. Joseph, Missouri. I tell people about it and they say "St. Louis?" like I got some kind of a tick that makes me spit out random words. St. Joseph, Missouri. Interesting town. At any time of the day, it looks like nothings going on. It's an outstanding illusion. In the evening, though, the place gets deserted like Chernobyl. That's a rough deal when you are stuck in a hotel room and the ol' belly buzzer is going off. I set out on foot to scope out a canteen. I had a long day and I was gonna take care of ME. After about an hour of walking around thinking to myself "Don't anybody eat in this town?", I came upon Boudreaux's. I'm looking at the signage like "What is St. Joseph, MO going to know about Cajun?". I don't do Louisiana flavor with the expectation of getting a box of Zatarain's, you know? But, the shop looked super clean and there was a contingent of locals flapping their jibs, so I took a spot at the bar. I threw down my list of demands like a good hostage taker, then settled in. I don't remember who the bartender was, but he was a meathead who only said simple, one-word replies. Was I supposed to speak French? Mon Dieu! Whatever. I just wanted my crawdad po' boy. It had been quite some time since I had a po' boy and I surely didn't think it was going to happen in Mizzurah! C'mon. Well, let me tell you something. When Mr. Personality dumped that tray on the bar, my eyes lit up. Holy geez, that po' boy was overflowing with golden, deeeeep fried mud bugs. I couldn't even see the crispy, perfectly browned torpedo roll underneath. This was excitement! The first bite was bliss. I ain't even gonna lie about it. Them Cajuns do the remoulade, which is like spicy mayonnaise sauce and dag-nab-it, this sauce was kickin'! Maillard, all over the place. My buds were gettin' down with the Zydeco! Now, my Cajun comes right from Baton Rouge, God's country for Louisiana homestyle. This wasn't Baton Rouge, but it was a welcome surprise for the weary traveler. I'll be honest with you guys, right now. The tab on a seat at Boudreax's is going to sting a bit. But, a guy knows when his banknotes are buying the best ingredients. I couldn't make this at home, so I let it go. You gotta live, right? Why not live right? Do yourself a flavor and hijack a fanboat to Boudreaux's Louisiana Seafood & Steaks. I can't even get past the po' boys menu to tell you about anything else. But if they do everything the way the do the po' boys, people, you are not going to have to deal with the ol' le désappointement! Boudreax's! And if you get service like Mr. One Note, let it go. What a beautiful old establishment with so much history behind it. We both had delicious meals. My spouse had the Cajun shrimp with potatoes in a gravy, I had the pasta primavera with vegetables. All so good we shared a lemon cake with a thick lemon filling that was recommended by our server. He was very informative & had great recommendations. read more

When the owner approached our table I expected a greeting or maybe a question about the quality of everything, but no. She may not have actually seen us. It was a slow weeknight and we were the only table in our area. In any case, she effectively disregarded us completely, took out a tape measure, and started measuring along the floor next to our table. So we felt in the way and unwelcome as we were clearly intruding into a much more important project. By the time she returned with a ten-foot folding ladder we were just getting ready to get up from the table. The stars are for our waiter, Kegan. The food was unremarkable. If you're in the neighborhood you might pop in for a look at the architecture. Or to say hi to Kegan. Otherwise, I don't recommend going out of your way. read more

This restaurant is definitely in my Top Five Favorites! If you've ever been to New Orleans, the food at Boudreaux's will transport you back. Start with the gator bites. Cooked to perfection everytime. I have never had a bad meal here. It is totally worth the drive. Completely authentic New Orleans quinine. Jambalaya is incredible. Red beans & rice, Po' Boys...whatever you're in the mood for in the Cajun/Creole arena will not disappoint . Make sure you check in with Cozzi (so?) the bartender. He's an absolute gem!!! What were we thinking, went at the busiest time of the year graduation and Mother's Day weekend!! Over an hour wait just to be seated. Was lucky enough to at least get drinks at the bar. The food here is AMAZING. We went twice in two weeks because we enjoyed it so much the first time that we were craving it again. But the service wasn't great the first time, and terrible the second time. The first time was a busy Friday night so we weren't too mad that our food took 45 minutes, but when it did come, the waitress gave my husband the wrong salad, and didn't realize her mistake until she went to another table and saw that she had given them his. So she went to each of our tables, asked "have you taken a bite yet?" and then swapped the salads. The salad she gave my husband from the other table already had a fork in it... but she said "well, they haven't taken a bite yet, so it's totally fine." He did not eat his salad. The second time was mid-afternoon on a Saturday, and it was really slow. Like, we were one of 4 tables. The waitress was polite but our food took almost an hour, and she forgot to even order our sides, so that was another 30 minutes. I think she came back to check on us once, and it was after our drinks had already been empty for ten minutes. In the meantime, several servers were standing around the register gossiping about other girls who weren't working that day, and one was standing at the bar texting. There was a couple who walked in the door and there wasn't even a host/hostess there to seat them... they just stood there waiting for about five minutes and then walked back out. Again, the food is SO good. We'll just be ordering to go in the future so that it's (hopefully) ready when we get there and we don't have to put up with the service. read more

As we have been to Boudreaux's many times, we had the normal expectations. My husband and I arrived, placed our name on the wait list which had several other couples already on it, told it would be about a 20 minute wait and took an awkward spot near the bar. People waiting really have no place to wait other than a very small area in the foyer(which can be very cold in the winter). Two groups of +5 came in after us and were immediately seated which seemed odd as they were seated at tables that could have easily been separated for the numerous waiting couples. We were seated after about 20 minutes and the waiter came quickly. We asked for two waters, a couple of beers and some bread. He brought the waters quickly but then didn't return for quite some time. When he finally came to take our order, we had to remind him about the beers. I used to always order the blackened chicken alfredo but can no longer handle the richness of the dish. It is an awesome dish and I deeply miss being able to eat it. So as I don't really care for fish or seafood, my choices were somewhat limited. I ordered the 5 oz steak with a loaded baked potato and side salad with ranch. My husband ordered the 12 oz signature steak with 1/2 fries, 1/2 onion rings and a salad with house dressing. The food was delivered slowly but hot. The steaks were cooked appropriately enough but the baked potato came with only butter and sour cream. Maybe that is what Boudreaux's considers "loaded" but I was expecting some cheese, bacon, chives etc. The fries/rings were as expected and the gravy is very tasty. We were contemplating getting dessert but the waiter just handed us the bill without offering so we didn't mention it. Not sure if the waiter was new or just had difficulty being efficient but hopefully he will improve. We will go back as the town doesn't have a lot of options like this restaurant but hopefully the experience will be better. read more

The atmosphere is wonderful. The servers are friendly and helpful. I started my birthday with some fried alligator with gravy dipping sauce. The alligator was tender and not mushy, a wonderful starter. They have Pepsi products and I chose the Serra Mist and topped it off with a Angry Orchard hard cider. When I got my Super Jambalaya, o.m.g., I have a new favorite restaurant! And the Cajun Mashed Potatoes were AWESOME! This would defiantly be a good restaurant to come to for a change of pace and awesome food head here! read more

This place is unique for St. Joe, MO! My brother and I went on a Saturday night and ordered two signature dishes. We had the jambalaya and the shrimp scampi, and the Cajun potatoes as a side. The potatoes were SO GOOD lol. Like it was my favorite part of the meal. The prices are a few bucks more than an average sit down place, but not outrageous and I think it was worth it for the environment and uniqueness. The staff was friendly and the restaurant was clean. I love going to this place and eating. The owners, and employees are super nice and friendly. For the most part service can be fast but of course there is always those times that service can be kinda bad and it's annoying. It would be cool if you guys offered cooking classes. Bathrooms were clean. Maybe add new Decorations, rent the building out for parties? Get a play kid area. read more

We are from KC and we were in St Joseph for a concert. We had heard great things about Boudreaux's so we had to check them out. We got there at 5:30 thinking that would be plenty of time to eat before a 7:30 concert. The hostess said that normally on a Saturday night they don't get too busy until 6:30 but tonight St Joe was hopping and Boudreaux's was no exception. We had a 45 min wait. There's not a great waiting area so we constantly had to move around to get out of someone's way. Everyone we talked to while waiting though said it was worth the wait. Once seated we had the fried alligator for an appetizer. It was great! Well cooked and the right amount of crunchiness. I had the crab cakes, broiled. They had great flavor and the texture was really good. My son had the chicken and sausage jambalaya, we all tasted one another's meals, that dish was delicious. Good flavors and not spicy. The texture of the meats were good. My husband had the mahi mahi blackened with dirty rice. The flavor was good but the texture was a little tough. The atmosphere was nice, it's located in a historic building which is always a plus to me. They are able to accommodate large parties too. We will go back. read more

The party of three seated right before us and the party of two seated right after us all received their appetizers and several courses of food, while all that had been brought to our table was water. A man placed a large to-go order at the bar and he also received his food before we got anything. Our entrees finally showed up about 45 minutes after we ordered, we never did get our appetizer, and the food we got was cold. It was a very disappointing lunch. St Joe is tough on a Monday night, but Boudreaux's was recommended by a couple people who live here. My review is colored by the fact that my wife & I eat gluten free. Most everything on the appetizer menu was battered & fried or had a flour infused sauce. When the waitress was asked for some suggestions, she said "I don't know " & walked away. I had the bacon wrapped filet mignon. It was the toughest filet I have had in a long time & the bacon was the wimpiest piece and it had fallen off so the reason for wrapping the steak was lost. I would call the dish tough steak with a tiny bit of soggy bacon. Side salad was good. 2nd visit to this establishment, not impressed either time. read more

Wow, I'm still trying to recover from the awful experience I had with family the other night. We came later in the evening on a Saturday (almost 8pm), it was pretty busy and we were told later, during the meal that there was a large group in the back room so this could've been an off-night(?) After being seated, we were served drinks pretty quickly but then it all went sour. We ordered entrees: Pastalaya and Etouffee, and boudin links to start. It took about 30 minutes for the appetizer to come out; about 15 minutes after ordering it, the waitress came out, I thought with the appetizer, but it was only to ask if we wanted boudin balls since they were out of links. Okay so they hadn't even started at that point, wow. We finally received the boudin balls, which were excellent, I thought, probably because I was sufficiently starving at that point. Then it took another probably 30-40 minutes to get our entrees and my husband's was literally room temperature, how long had they let it sit? He had to send it back. Mine was just okay, not enough spice and peppers and vegetables were mushy. I was so hungry I didn't really care at that point. So the service was awful and food was just okay in my opinion, the bouidin was definitely delicious but not worth a trip to me. The weird thing was the young waitress was very kind but seemed strangely unperturbed that service was so slow, she told us that there was a big group that came in unexpectedly and acted like it was no big deal. No manager came out to apologize for the running out of our appetizer, or the extra long waiting for food, or the cold entree. Nothing. And we weren't the only tables who got this service, I know, as many other tables sat without food, craning their necks toward the kitchen. The manager should've been out smoothing feathers, offering apologies, comping appetizers whatever, just something. Let's just say I'll probably be steering clear next time I'm in the area. read more

Every time I have a flashback of my fried crab cakes... I want to blow chunks immediately. I can feel the lump in my throat emerging from the depths of my stomach. Very rarely am I ever disappointed in restaurants (it takes a lot) but Boudreaux's succeeded in probably what I would consider my "food-let-down-of-the-summer." I had my eye on this place for a while but it was always so busy the first couple times I had dropped by when in the St. Joe area. They don't take reservations unless you have a larger party of people. (Four or six maybe? Don't recall what number she said.) We managed to snag a table during the 6 o'clock hour and ordered right away. Within ten minutes max, my boyfriend's broiled seafood platter (w/ sautéed vegetables) and my fried crab cakes (w/ half fries and onion rings) arrived to our table. Lukewarm soggy fries, barely battered flimsy onion rings, and two mushy crab cakes greeted my taste buds. One word: horrendous. Absolutely disgusting. All of my items were overly bland and the texture of the cakes started getting to me. I actually had to pause because I was worried I would heave on the floor. Eventually my boyfriend tried his crab cake...the same result yielded. He was pleased with everything included in his platter (catfish, crawfish, shrimp, oysters) yet the same gut wrenching feeling made it's way with the crab cake. I LOVE a good crab cake but I feel so horrible that his first experience having one was at Boudreaux's. Even the day after consumption, we still get the most sickening feeling thinking back. One of my two stars is for the service. Our waitress was sweet girl who was very attentive and friendly. I am very conflicted as to coming back. Despite the quality for nearly $50, I want so badly to believe Boudreaux's is prime and this was just an isolated incident. read more

Whenever you find yourself in the area, Bourdeaux's is a must try. Located in an old building in historic downtown St. Joseph, the setting couldn't be better. A wide-open layout greets you as walk in. There's a bar serving up an extensive list of cajun-inspired cocktails, plus plenty of wine, bourbon, beer, and more. For my entree, I tried a shrimp and crawfish jambalaya with a side of vegetables. Delicious and filling with plenty of leftovers for later. Our group also sampled the gator bites (a must try if you've never had them), fried pickles (served a tad cold, but still good) and an order of boudin, which was fantastic. My wife enjoyed her cajun Vegetarian Delight pasta dish. I'd recommend making a reservation on the weekends because Bourdeaux's was absolutely packed on a Saturday evening. Where do I begin? Let's start with parking. No signage anywhere indicating where their parking lot is. Only a cryptic sign telling me I'll be towed or booted if I park in a posted lot. Well, the posts aren't very clear. Here's an idea, post which lot is yours. So after moving car, I use the facilities to wash up before my meal. As I walk past the wall of servers, at least 8, I go into a bathroom that I doubt had been addressed since lunch (it was 6pm). Trash spilling out of the can onto the floor and no paper towels. So now I'm just a little annoyed, but my wife was looking forward to this and had ordered me a beer so I bit my tongue and continued on. So let's talk about the food and the plethora of wait staff. First, our server was slow, practically non existent and seemed like a zombie when she came to the table. It was Halloween, maybe she was. In any case, she made no effort to be better or improve the experience. The food? Well, let's say no one will mistake this for real Cajun/Creole food. It's basically Popeyes with a 400-500% mark up. Started with the alligator bites. The portion was far less than the picture. They were overcooked, tough, and fairly bland. Because we were only wanting something light, we both ordered po boys. A shrimp and a crawfish. (Plus, a little sticker shock at the prices. Considering the quality of the alligator bites, we figured we'd cut our losses). Again, the meat in the po boys came overcooked, undercooked, and lacking in quantity. I've actually had a better po boy at Popeyes. The fries were disappointing. They looked good, but were bland...in a Cajun restaurant. Go figure. The onion rings, however, were really good. Light breading, good flavor, really good. So by this time if was definitely falling into a "probably won't be back", and then the bill came. Turns out we were charged for a sauce that is mentioned on the menu to try with our po boys and we were asked by our server if we wanted. No where did the menu mention, or the server for that matter, that there was a charge for this bland sauce with a hint horseradish. Not a significant charge, but enough for us to say "yeah, won't be back". Plus, "won't recommend either" Lots of promise at this place, but no delivery. They failed at every step. It's not Cajun, but could be a good Cajun-like place, but there are so many holes in their execution you'd be better off just going to Popeyes. read more

I have been here twice and the place is busy and bustling with people enjoying flavorful food in northern Missouri. The most memorable thing I had in my visits was the Seafood Court-Bouillon. It is a milk chocolate roux-based sauce with catfish, crawfish tails, and shrimps. Rice. Tri-color bell peppers. Just delicious. Fried pickles never hurt. Fried alligator if you are feeling frisky. Really a gem to have a good Cajun place in downtown St Jo. To address previous reviews, the prices here are moderate... it ain't cheap. I have never had issue with portions yet. read more

While traveling cross county, we opted stop for the night in St Joseph. Our hotel didn't have a restaurant so, we searched online for somewhere that did orders to go. We were not disappointed. We had the following: * fried alligator * bar trash * crawfish bisque * crab bisque * bourbon street pasta with chicken * crawfish etoufee & crawfish tails Everything was absolutely delicious. On the trip from California to Missouri it was easily the best food we had. I ate crab bisque far after feeling full. The flavor was so rich and addicting.
