Came here for lunch on a weekday. If you don't want to wait in line you have to come before noon or you'll be waiting in line for a long time. The inside is very charming. It looks like it was a former bank or post office. If you're a part two you will likely be sharing a table with another couple as they try to accommodate as many people as possible. That means sharing water, bread, butter, etc. Now for the food. It seems as though the menu changes daily as it has today's date. We ordered the pork terrine, escargot, boeuf bourguignon and steak frites. All the food was pretty underwhelming. The escargot could have used more seasoning. The boeuf bourguignon seemed like a normal beef stew and the sauce was watery instead of being thick and rich. The steak was tough and the fries were soggy with no flavor. The best part of the meal was the ice cream dessert that we ordered. It was in a choux pastry and covered with chocolate and nuts. Overall, I think it's worth a try since the prices are so reasonable and they have a lot of French classics. I just don't think it's worth waiting in a long line for it. Stooped for convenient French food "your grandmother would make" as recommended by our domicile host. We had the escargot, which were delicious and the thin sliced pig snout, which reminded me of luncheon meat. Tried the snout for something French. For entree I had the roast pork loin in "charcuterie sauce" which came with petite elbow macaroni. I ordered the mushrooms also and were quite surprised when they came in a tomato sauce. I tried one but couldn't eat them as there was no seasoning and tasted like the poured a can of tomato sauce in a pan and added the mushrooms, with no seasoning. This was by far one of the worst, most bland meals I've ever had in My entire life. The vegetables were like steamed cafeteria mush. The dish was cold upon arrival and completely unseasoned. The service was terrible and the waiter exceptionally rude. He would take for ever to arrive, then upon speaking would start immediately with "Hurry up! Action!" It was loud and insanely crowded. I have a new appreciation for french fries after this meal. These are one of my favorite types of fries: crisp on the outside but really soft and warm in the center. These are the perfect types of fries to sop up all of the blood from the meat mixed with the creamy pepper sauce This meal was super filling and I cleaned my plate with these fries. The oeuf mayonnaise (for those who don't know hehe) is a hard-boiled egg with mayonnaise. Yea right? A little wack right? Wrong. It changed me. I loved it. Many people on the interwebs have harsh things to write about Bouillon Chartier, all of which I understand: The food is not stellar. (The pâté was fine. The blanquette de veau, a veal stew in a pale gravy, was rather bland but comforting. Spaghetti bolognese was dry, but it was properly meaty, not too tomato-y.) It is loud and cramped. The service is perfunctory at best. So is it still worth visiting? Absolutely, because Bouillon Chartier is a quintessential Parisian experience. We ended up there as the one we visited (the Grands Boulevards location) was walking distance to our hotel and open later than most other restaurants. Food and drink are relatively cheap, and the fin de siècle dining rooms are gorgeous, though the wait can be quite long -- but seeing mostly younger Paris coming out for a cheap dinner was a fun experience itself. Waiters tabulate the bill by hand on the tablecloths, and it is not uncommon to be seated at the same table as complete strangers. I felt like we were crashing a young French couple's date as we were sat beside them, but they paid us no mind. Dining at a bouillon is something a visitor to Paris should do at least once, and I cannot imagine a better location than the grand historic room of Bouillon Chartier Grands Boulevards. read more

Chartier or Bouillon Chartier is a noteworthy restaurant anyone visiting Paris should experience. It has a long history going back to the late nineteenth century. The restaurant was priced cheap for poor workers and perhaps even nominal/free for the indigent. Someone would have to fact check the latter. Nevertheless, this was a place where one could get a cheap and filling meal largely based on stews and soups, hence the bouillon in the name. Over the years everyone wanted in on a good thing and the audience spread to a wide range of patrons, which is how you come to know Chartier and well established on the tourist map. It's a popular place and there is almost always a line waiting with someone triaging the cue to see how many are in your party and where you can be seated in the dining area comprising many long tables where you will be served family style. Tip: If you see the line extending out to the sidewalk, understand the line starts well inside under the arch to the right and into a courtyard to the door. So the line is longer than it looks from the street. The experience inside the restaurant is similar to that found at Durgin Park at Faneuil Hall in Boston, now closed. So do not expect the waitstaff to be overly friendly or patient. Ask for the menu in English to be more decisive. The interior is well worn in places and the woodwork reflects the long history. I have eaten here back in the late 80s or 90s as well as 2002 before Yelp existed. I don't recall what I ate the first time (it might have been the beef bourguignon everyone raves), but I had steak tartare the second time. It was served with a poached egg on top with the small baguette and the red wine I ordered, but it was not as impressive as what I ate the first time. This was the only time I had steak tartare, so it was a bit venturesome for my palate at the time. I like my steak medium rare and I like sushi, but their version of steak tartare was not as good as other things on the menu. I do not think the steak tartare is on the menu today. Despite my experience with steak tartare, the experience is worth the visit and the fact I returned a second time is an indicator Chartier is return worthy; though, Paris is filled with cafes and brasserie and extraordinary restaurants that may keep you from returning to Chartier. The waiter will write your bill on the paper "tablecloth" upon finishing your meal. Your bill will strike you as a great value in keeping with its history and in contrast to what you'll pay elsewhere. It may be on the tourist maps, but Parisiens and French folks will frequent Chartier and recognize a good value. This is not a sit and linger spot where you can enjoy a relaxed conversation afterwards. Pay up and go is what you do. It's a busy place, but still a four star experience. read more

Save your time & money! This may have been a great place in the past but it's sad, disappointing and gross. The water glass & tableware were dirty. When we brought it up to the waiter, he slammed it down and passed me my moms cup (not sure what he meant by that). They served us bread using someone's leftover bread basket (the bottle cap was in the basket). When I tried to bring it up to the maitre d' he ignored me, said yes, go sit down and dismissed me. The beef tongue was decent. The duck confit was wet (no crispy skin) and too salty. The only edible thing was the escargot 10/10. I can't even blame my waiter for his lack of service. The poor guy is in charge of serving nine tables all by himself. I get it, if you want cheap food then here's your place. It isn't good food and definitely not worth the wait. The prices here are great, so if you're looking for a cheap meal then this is the place. However, the service is abysmal and quality of the food is just so so. We waited quite awhile before our waiter stopped by our table, waited more for him to actually take our order, and then waited even longer before the order was even put in. The restaurant was very busy so perhaps they were understaffed, but the other waiter in our section was managing his tables with ease while our table and the others under the jurisdiction of our waiter were stuck waiting two to three times as long for drinks and food. This just wasn't good at all. I don't know how this is one of the most reviewed places in Paris but I was severely disappointed. The beef bourguignon featured very poor cuts of meat that were fatty and stringy. This spot advertises French classics at very affordable prices, and that's certainly true. My friend and I were able to try a number of dishes without breaking the bank. We enjoyed some cheese, escargot, avocado with shrimp salad, steak and fries, and a veal dish for about 40 euros. The escargot and avocado dishes were pretty tasty, but both of our main dishes were disappointing. The steak was extremely over cooked and the fries were unseasoned. The veal dish had very little meat in it and was served with whole boiled potatoes. Plus, we were seated in the very corner of the dining room so it was difficult to flag down our waiter to get our next courses and then the check later on. We visited Paris in October 2024 mainly to explore the architecture of the Belle Epoque. This led us to Bouillon Chartier in Montemarte. It's an affordable restaurant that serves unpretentious, hearty French dishes you associate with traditional Paris. Built in 1896, you can't find a dining room with this feel and buzz anywhere else in the world. It's a living example of an Art Nouveau exhibit you might see at the Musee d'Orsay. The interior consists of glass ceilings, mosaic tilework, large mirrors, and marble service stations that have remained largely unchanged since it opened. But it's no tourist trap, as vocal locals predominate here. Of course, you could eat at Maxim's for another classic example of the Belle Epoque or Brasserie Lipp and pay much, much more for a higher-end meal.  My steak au poivre with frittes, leeks vinaigrette, camembert cheese, profiterole chartier, and glass of red wine cost about $30. The same meal in LA would cost about $100, as they undoubtedly would upgrade the steak quality to something you don't need for a casual lunch. Bouillon Chartier serves good top sirloin. I ranked my visit here in October 2024 as one of my top ten experiences in Paris. Long lines develop half an hour before the restaurant opens, and seating is tight, which is the case with most French restaurants. read more

Wonderful, and so worth the wait. I was alone so I actually got in ahead of others in line, since they'll seat small parties with others when there's an open seat. It was my first time visiting a bouillon restaurant, and I was prepared for it to be beautiful and touristy-meh for the food. I was pleasantly surprised! I had the steak & the leeks vinaigrette, and some very good table wine. I love that they don't ask you how you want the steak, but bring it out medium rare, which is the correct doneness for that cut of meat. (If you want well done meat, you should probably order something else, or maybe not go to France.) The room is gorgeous with stained glass art nouveau details, has a great level of buzz without overwhelming your ears, and you feel so fancy for so little money. I will definitely go back (and alone, again, because it's fun to sit with strangers when you're on vacation). I'm very glad these restaurants have been saved from a fate in the dustbin of history. Good food for the price! Quite inexpensive place for dinner that gets very very busy around the typical dinner time in Paris (7:30-9:30). We went around this time and the line was wrapped around the building, so we came back the next evening for an early dinner (around 4:30-5) and there was no wait at all. The waiter was funny and attentive, and the inside was very pretty. As we ate, the dining room filled up and got more lively. Highly recommend the escargot and the steak with pepper sauce (heads up - it is cooked quite rare/medium rare even if you order otherwise). We were recommended to come here by our friend when we told them that we wanted a place that screams "french." The design is very old school and they have all the classics. For appetizer we got the boiled eggs, escargot, and avocado. For the mains, we did the steak and fries, pig trotter, and the assorted meat place. Lastly for dessert we did the rum baba and cream profiteroles. As you may have noticed, the prices are pretty reasonable.. rather cheap for Paris therefore you can't expect much from the quality. Just off the bat, the average wait time is two hours and we waited in line just a little under two hours. The line structure is very organized and supervised. We went on a Saturday late evening. The wait was definitely worth the experience! They do seat you with other party's when you are a smaller group. We shared a table with another couple. The wait time for food is not long at all and everything is so structured and they definitely have perfected their flow! This restaurant has been around for decades and that alone is such a neat experience. The interior is so beautiful and I couldn't help but look at all the well preserved details. There are restrooms and despite the older building everything was well kept! We both had the steak and frites which is a staple. I highly recommend if it's your first time! This place is old school. Simple deliciously prepared French food. The inside is large and every bit a bustling French dinner spot. The service is fast and lovely. I started the meal with the prawns and mayonnaise and it's not shrimp and Hellmans-I could've eaten 3 helpings of that stuff it was so good. When you arrive you will see a line longer than you have ever seen in your life. Plan to wait at least an hour. Unfortunately, the food isn't worth waiting even a minute. This is a touristy trap sort of thing. Interesting to look at inside, but you certainly don't want to eat there. The bœuf bourguignon was probably the worst I've ever had. The meat was so fatty I had to leave about half on my plate. The sauce was watery and they served it with some tiny elbow macaroni. So wrong on so many levels. The pomme frites were particularly disgusting. They were obviously frozen potatoes from a bag, that tasted stale, bland, and generally reminiscent of cardboard. Again, never have had worse.
