Ok, let me just state what this place is. It's a budget friendly dining hall that's like a cafeteria hall for college kids. There were lines out the door - not for the food but really for the experience of a loud, noisy casual dining hall and food less than 10 euros. This place is not for me. We came on a recommendation from a local that it's great but came out sorely disappointed (prices were amazing!) but too good to be true as the quality of the food was less then appealing. Everything tasted like it was from a can and the fries were most likely McDonald frozen bags of potato sticks (as easy as it is to consume, I question the presence of potatoes). The steak we ordered was almost raw! Like they slapped it on the grill to chat but not actually to cook the meat. I was pregnant so I had to give up the steak and eat the beef slosh over some boiled macaroni from a can noodle. The food - cafeteria level I'm sorry it was just terrible and not representable of French cuisine. Just don't do it. The crepes we had across the street helped mask the disappointment of this food. Service? Don't even ask, they forgot about us, forgot parts of our order. It's not their fault almost bc it's busy as hell in there but they just don't give a shit, Bill for 4 of us with mains, a few sides and a pitcher of sangria (which we didn't order, we ordered a glass) but we couldn't even correct this bc the server was no where to be found. I heard there was supposed to be a long line here, so we visited relatively early in the evening (maybe 6 pm?) and there was no wait. The food was generally good and pretty affordable. I got snails, sausage, and steak. This was my first time trying snails and they're not bad. I'm not sure if I would get it again though. The taste is unique and a slight bit too salty for me. This was also my first time trying this kind of sausage, and it was fine. I'm not sure I would try it again. The steak was ok, but definitely helped by the sauce. The sausage and steak both came with fries which were also good, but nothing special. The service was quite efficient even as the restaurant filled up. There were no problems with speaking English at all. In terms of value, I think this is a great place to go. The quality isn't the best, but I think is well above average for the price. read more

I was recommended this place from some friends and family who told me that this was a beautiful place where we could try some traditional French food at an affordable price. We waited in line for about one hour which I don't mind because I was excited for the experience. Me and my two friends were seated at a table for 4 and everything started out just fine. The waitress seemed busy but reasonably friendly. There were restrooms to use located downstairs(not clean and writing on the wall but hey,it's Paris). I started off my meal with a vegetable soup which was bland but only 1 Euro so I can't complain. For our main dish we all decided to have the traditional beef bourguignon(8 Euro). This dish was awful. Each piece of meat was inedible because it was pure fat and not the kind that melts in your mouth, but the kind that you could chew for days. We didn't complain though, we just ate the macaroni noodles on the side. For dessert we all got loads of ice cream and rice pudding. Now it was time for the check. THIS IS WHERE THINGS TOOK A TURN FOR THE WORST: We asked our waitress if we could please get a split check. I did not think it was a big deal as I'd done it before at other locations and it was never a problem. Our waiter rolled her eyes at us and told us to figure out how much each of us owed. We didn't mind figuring it out so we asked for a menu so we could add up what each of us owed. The menu never arrived after 5 minutes, so we asked again for a menu. This is when the waiter turned hostile. She frantically began throwing our things all around the table including my phone and other belongings. All the while she was screaming at us in French. Only one person at our table spoke French so he was translating what she was saying. She said they have thousands of people to serve and we were causing a problem for her by asking for a split check. The whole restaurant was looking at this commotion unfold. My face was red and I was in shock at the way she was acting. Now after yelling at us, she says to figure out the amount we each owe already. She was saying that she doesn't have time for this nonsense. Yet she still hadn't brought a menu and kept slamming her hand on the table to signify that it's written on the table. However, none of us could read what she had wrote. Now she sends a new waitress over who also begins yelling at us, this time in English. Telling us that "they don't split checks here and it's our job to pay each other back when we leave". Which is FINE, but just say that next time and don't scream at us and throw my belongings around the table like some wild animal. Anyway, we end up finally paying and they charge us 5 euros too much because the calculation is wrong and we never received a menu so we basically had to just guess what we owed. Us being too scared to say anything at this point, we just accept the loss and move on. We were shakin up for hours after this altercation and still (a day later) can't believe it. I'm not sure the waitress's name but she was waitress #3. I will never ever be back or recommend this place to anyone. Which I guess they don't care and know that they can treat anyone horrible because people will still show up and it will be crowded. This place is terribly overhyped and the way they treat people is disgusting. Save yourself some time and humiliation by going somewhere else. This is a pretty well known establishment in Paris, apparently and we just happen to have our very first meal here. We were lucky enough to have a seat right away and were greeted by our waiter. They have menus in both English and French so it's great for tourists. The restaurant is beautiful and bustling inside. Our waiter was quite hospitable and not at all rude as I was previously warned they would be. I ordered the spaghetti bolognese and I thought it was tasty. Heart and satisfying after my long flight. I don't get it, I really don't. My French friend wanted to bring me here but the line was too long, so I came back myself another night while she was out of town. It was starting to fill up fast around 6pm and I figured I'd best prepare for an awesome meal. Couldn't have been more wrong. I was seated at a 4 person table, as a solo diner. There was a couple already there, and I ended up next to them and across from another solo traveler. Not at a community table made for different parties mind you, at a normal 4 person table you'd normally only see 1 party at. It was uncomfortable to say the least. Then my waiter came to take my order approximately 30 seconds after I was seated. I told him I'd need some time to look over the menu. He came back 1 minute later (this is not an exaggeration by the way, I had just gotten through the wine list only), and would not accept me telling him I needed more time still, he just wouldn't leave. I asked for his recommendation and he rudely told me he doesn't know what I eat, so I said I eat meat or anything else, and he pointed to something on the menu and took it before I could see what I was getting. I asked what wine he'd recommend and he told me my only option was the small bottle of white for 1 person, I guess I'd be screwed if I had wanted a different kind and was okay ordering a full bottle? The food came about 3 minutes later. It was beef on a skewer with some kind of oily green sauce, and French fries. The meat was incredibly dry and chewy and the sauce tasteless. The fries had no flavor. When he asked if I wanted dessert and I said no, he looked shocked. I didn't want to risk trying something and having it be awful too, and waste a good dessert moment in Paris. I walked to get an eclair down the street. I left about 15 minutes after I had arrived, it was clear they wanted to rush people through and get them out asap. With the line, I kind of get it. But it made for an awful dining experience. Don't sleep on this restaurant! A local and tourist favorite restaurant experience. Yes it is an experience and not only is the food good and homey but the experience as a whole warrants a visit. With some of the best prices anywhere in the city to try as much or as little traditional French classic foods as you want. The gravy likewise tasteless, the fries bettered by any cheap diner. When I politely requested something else, the waiter had the gall to stand there and think about it before bringing a piece of chicken with half the flavor of a Costco roaster. At the time we went - early Sunday evening (maybe around 5-6pm), there was no wait; so I would recommend coming by earlier or less busy days. We had the steak and frites, escargot, duck confit, and foie gras. -I had the duck confit and found it dry, when it should be moist. - Escargot was good (like my significant other says - like clams), which ease my nerves (since I haven't eaten it in years!). -The foie gras came with bread but it was heavily toasted that I wouldn't recommend anyone with sensitive teeth to chew. I enjoy eating crisp apples and it was nothing close to crisp. Only couple of complaints- 1) they seat you next to other parties even when there are empty tables. I'm not sure if this is due to convenience sake (or an efficient way of increasing table turnover) but you're literally next to another party. It can be difficult to enjoy your meal in a bar-like seating arrangement and the restaurant was half empty anyway! 2) they reuse the leftover bread in the bread basket! The server took away our bread basket during the middle of our meal (we actually weren't done yet since the foie gras was a lot and we needed more bread to consume with it). He placed it one counter away, and then we saw it being served again to the party next to us). Now I give them +1 for reducing food waste, but ..... is it worth risking someone's health? With that in mind and knowing that the price is very reasonable, then you can enjoy the ambience and the food. :-) We got steak frites (one with peppercorn sauce), boeuf bourguignon and escargot. We didn't go here for the food so much as for the brasserie atmosphere. The food was just ok-- VERY traditional French food at a great price point. So don't go there expecting great food. Even tho many locals go here as well. We intended to eat here on a previous night but the line was very long (no res ever taken) so decided to arrive early the following night at 5 pm. No wait at all. What bothered me the most was that my party of 3 was seated at the absolute worse table at the very entrance of the restaurant which was wide open. In fact I asked for a table more inside the restaurant, but my request was declined. In fact, many other parties after mine were seated at much better tables. We came here based on a recommendation from our airbnb host and we saw it had historic/popular feedback. It was by far the most disappointing meal we have had in our five weeks throughout Europe - much less Paris. The waiters were over-worked and it felt like a bother to ask for anything, and extremely unfriendly - which I would be too if I worked there. Luckily we have had some excellent meals throughout Paris to set a high standard, and this was just gross on so many levels. The food was flavorless, tough to chew, and made us feel sick after the fact. We tried the escargo which was probably the most decent out of everything but even that was lackluster. Tried their eggs which was literally a spoonful of sad mayo and a hard boiled egg that gave me depression when I looked at it. We have ordered this many times before and its always decent presentation and delicious flavor from other places in Paris. The worst of all though was our main dish which was steak, fries, with chimichurri sauce (the recommended meal by the restaurant). When I think about it, it makes me feel sick. It was beyond greasy, meat was impossible to chew, and had no flavor. Even the fries were shite. The only saving grace was the ice cream we had was good. So disappointing and I write this just trying to warn first time visitors to not let this be their first taste of Paris. So many better options and service. Definitely not up to the hype During our meal, the pigs snout was pretty good, but when our mains came out, they were not as good as I thought they would be the prices were affordable put the meat was tough and fatty. While this restaurant may have been in business since 1896, I am afraid that you should not be tricked into assuming that it must be great because of the long line ups outside. It may be busy and packed due to its history and prior fame and the tourist continue to flock. Tonight's dinner was not great. In fact the worst one we had during the last week. Escargot- cold. The boeuf bourguignon and beef with frites were not winners either. The boeuf bourguignon did not arrive as indicated in the menu. Instead of potatoes it arrived with bland macaroni pasta. The meet was soft and flavourless. The beef with frites was cooked to order and was medium- but was tough. Sadly the meals were not finished. Service seemed rushed and you are not a guest you are a table being turned over for the next tourist that is waiting in line. The moelleux au chocolat was rich, albeit a bit dry. Food itself won't blow you away, but for the price, you can't get it anywhere else in Paris. Aside from the average food, it's the service, atmosphere, and price which make le Bouillon Chartier so popular, as well as worth having a meal in. For dessert, the baba a rhum for about 4 euros was more like a savarin...dry on the inside but there was plenty of rum syrup that was quite strong. I had the profiterole chartier for 4.90 euros swimming in a chocolate sauce with good ice cream inside iso of whip cream. Our server, Yarrick, was AWESOME...totally wonderful with his service. He was efficient, helpful, and very patient. When I read some other TA reviews of the poor service by some of the servers, we were quite apprehensive, but Yarrick was a STAR in our books! Since they add up all the dishes manually on the table, it is best to double check with the l'addition. For us, there was a discrepancy of about 3 euros but our server, Yarrick, was very quick to rectify that and to confirm that our addition was correct. We waited no more than 5 minutes at 5pm to enter the resto and by the time we left, there was a long line up but it was moving at a good pace. For the 3 of us....6 escargots, 1 side mushroom, 3 pig trotters, 1 tete de veau, 1 bottle of bordeaux, 1 profiterole, and 1 rhum a baba came to 83.60 euros. read more

Extremely disappointing. I had seen several reviews and YouTube videos sing the praises of this restaurant. We arrived at midday and there was no line, which was amazing because we tried coming the evening before and the line was insanely long. We were taken directly upstairs to a table by the hostess who was very friendly. It took a very long time for the waiter to stop by our table even though he had taken the order of the table next to us. Which was fine because we expect service in Paris to be very slow. When the waiter finally made it over to us we ordered everything based on all the reviews we've read. We ordered the Beef Bourguignon, the Pommé Frites and the Escargot. Our food came almost immediately! Then we understood why. All of the meat was very tough and chewy. It was full of fat and tendons. The macaroni noodles were overcooked which is surprising considering how quickly all our dishes came out. The escargot was extremely chewy and had some pieces of shell which completely ruined that dish for me. We had to flag down the waiter several times just to get some water and he did so begrudgingly. The bread and butter they gave us was stale and flavorless. Considering we were here in the middle of the day when it was not busy, I expected to have a better experience. Overall I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone, even as a last resort. You're better off going to one of the outdoor markets that always have freshly prepared food for half the price. Was able to order escargot, two mains and sides, three desserts, and three drinks for only 65 euros. The escargot were some of the largest ones I've seen in France. The desserts were super good and they did not go lightly on the rum for the Rum Baba which was great. The service was fantastic for how busy and hectic it was inside. Best service I've ever had! The waiter writes ticket on paper table cloth, brings out food (precooked) so fast, you sit next to strangers, and you're outta there before you know! I see the appeal of this place. You can get dinner for 2 without drinks for maybe 20-25 Euro. You get decent portions and the food isn't bad. It's not great, but not bad. The waiters are faster than any restaurant you will eat at in Paris. They don't rush you out, but they bring that check like it's an American restaurant. It is a large restaurant but with tables on top of each other. You may be a group of 5 or 7 sitting at a table sized for one fewer. You may be a couple sitting in between two other couples with adjoining tables and sharing a carafe of water. If that's what you are looking for, go for it. Our green salad was lettuce with a vinaigrette. Nothing else. Ordered some sort of beef with a white sauce. Came on a plate with a little rice. They forgot my green beans that I ordered and took them off at the end. I couldn't tell if they had forgotten because everything came piecemeal.
