I got the crab cake BLT and upgraded my side for the seafood mac (piled high with crab) - delicious. It came out to about $39 with tax and tip. 2026 #19

Since my last review back in 2024, I have to say that the service at this location has gone down…read more For our most recent visit, I'm not sure if the struggles in service is due to the restaurant being understaffed, a change in management, or a lack of training. From my last few experiences during weekend brunch, service has been really hit or miss with mostly misses. For instance, tell me how your food arrives to the table before the silverware does (even after making several requests for silverware). Another example, after waiting close to 15 minutes for a simple glass of ice, I took it upon myself to go to the bar and get my glass of ice. Shoot, we could not even leave when we wanted to because it took forever to get the check. Once again, I ended up going inside to ask the hostess to give us our check. Of course, the restaurant adds a 20% gratuity to all checks so patrons have the privilege to pay for crappy service. With the outdoor seating, I don't know if the waiters forget about their customers outside, i.e., "out of sight, out of mind". If the restaurant cannot provide the same service outside as they do inside, then maybe they should get rid of the patio seating. IF I dine at Miss Toya's in the future, I will be sure to dine only at the bar...at least it will be easier to flag someone down when I need something. Also, since when is Creole Punch green instead of red?

Girls night turned full blown main character moment. The DJ understood the assignment and kept the vibe going with straight Lil Kim classics all night. When I tell you we took over the spot, I mean that in the best way possible. The energy was high, the music was right, and the whole place felt like our personal party. Now let's talk food. I ordered the Crack and Peel Seafood Boil and I enjoyed it immensely. Flavor was there, portion was solid, no problems. And listen... I'm obsessed with their wings...well, wings in general lol, but theirs definitely get an A+ from me. They're always a must for me. Service was actually really good too. Staff was attentive, kept up with our group, and didn't miss a beat even with all our extra energy in the building. If you're looking for a chill, quiet dinner...this might not be your Friday or Saturday night spot. But if you want good food, a fun crowd, and a whole vibe, Hook and Reel delivered. I'm still fairly new to the area and had been wanting to try this location for a while, but it's usually been too busy during my previous visits. I stopped by yesterday for happy hour and ordered a seafood boil, and it ended up being one of the worst I've had. Something about it just seemed off, and the flavor was noticeably different from other locations I've visited. I'm not sure what went wrong, but it was disappointing. The only redeeming part of my visit were the happy hour drinks, which honestly made the meal a bit easier to get through. I was really hoping for a better experience and hope this was just an off day.

Because I've not found real Louisiana boudin anywhere else in the DC area, and because of the family's hospitality, I will give them 4 stars. The Jambalaya Shack is a catering business that was present at this past weekend's Breaux Vineyards Cajun Festival. They're from southern Louisiana, and seem to get invited to cater many of their events. They had jambalaya, corn maque choux, and boudin links. Because I was waiting on live boiled crawfish from another vendor, I decided to just share a link of boudin for $5. Their young boy said after I ordered, "Sure! You have to ring the boudin bell!" So I did, while his mother laughed and wrapped up a link for me. She made sure I knew how to eat it (I did), and I asked her if it was spicy or not (she said not at all...probably due to the DC clientele...but that they were good and that they shipped them straight from Louisiana). They also had an assortment of mild Cajun seasonings and hot sauces. It was not the best boudin I've ever had (that one goes to the Boudin King in Louisiana), but it was slightly better than the boudin I can get at the grocery store in Texas (but bigger). The Jambalaya Shack's also had good amounts of little liver pieces in it. I wish I had had hotter seasonings (cayenne chile powder would have been awesome) to spice it up with... I wish I had also tried their namesake jambalaya, but it was the chicken/sausage variety and other than the boudin, I was in the mood for seafood. I do think I was the only person I saw at the festival that tried the boudin (or probably knew what it was). Speaking of seafood, the other caterer's boiled crawfish was bland, and Jambalaya Shack was nice enough to let us have some of their seasonings. They saved the day.
