The dealer has always changed the oil for my Ford 2018 F 250 Superduty. They did a good job but the services that came w/ an oil change at Box K Auto is reminiscent of 30 years ago. We also requested an oil change which included an unexpected complimentary car wash and vacuum. The price was so reasonable, the service impeccable, and the staff was both friendly and professional. Absolutely the worst mechanic I have ever been to in my life. They caused $4,300 in damage to my new motor and refuse to take responsibility, breaking a rocker arm bolt by overrevving my engine and flooding my motor with fuel, then tell me I need new injectors and ignore my complaint about the exhaust leak from the rocker arm bolt they broke, and also charged for full rack and pinion but only installed the steering boot, charging for work they did not do. These people are crooks. The owner, Millie, is a completely dishonest person and a crook. They don't know what they are doing beyond simple maintenance work, and even then I wouldn't trust these people, as they cause damage and then expect you to pay to fix damage due to their incompetence. Worst mechanic and worst business I have ever come across. I wish I had never taken my vehicle to these "mechanics" and am now stuck being out $4,300 and having to sue these people. Stay away from here, they are dishonest and incompetent and crooks ( it is illegal to charge for work not completed). read more

So pleased with the service we received from Millie & Box K Auto - My wifes' Mercedes engine oil distress signal came on as we drove into town. I'm going 'great, where am I going to find a Mercedes shop around here?'; luckily Yelp had high rankings for Box K (well earned I'd say), so I called, they said bring it in. They admitted that if specialized Mercedes tools were required they probably wouldnt be able to help, but they'd take a look. Luckily, they were able to diagnose the leak problem (oil pan sensor and cam plug both leaking); called me back with a quote and timeframe. Price was reasonable, service was friendly and fast, They also washed and vacuumed the car (and it had alot of oil splattered on the exterior)! 20kmi/2yr warranty on the service to boot "no fine print". Many thanks to the unlucky tech who had to clean the motor to find the messy oil leak! Next time i need vehicle repair on the peninsula I'll look to Box K. read more

We are from Bellingham and were staying in Surfside leaving on Friday when we realized our van was broken down. We asked at the Worldmark desk where to take it and one person recommended a local shop, but another said they went there, but ended up having to take it to box K anyways so we decided to have it towed there. We arrived at around 1:30 on that Friday and it needed some major work such as both tie-rods being replaced. Millie the owner helped us out and was able to bump some jobs until Monday so we could get home! I picked up the van just before 5pm and Millie left me a message that she wouldn't leave her shop until I arrived so I wouldn't be stranded until Monday (although we do love this area a lot and they are within walking distance of downtown so it wouldn't have been too bad to have to stay the whole weekend). They also offer shuttle service to and from your hotel and will help you arrange accommodations if you need it. They even washed the outside and cleaned the interior! Was just driving through the area and needed some repairs on the car. I thought I would need new front brakes and rotors. That was estimated at $800. Plus serpentine belt. All that work would easily be over $1000 anywhere I brought it. They called me back and told me a rock was caught between my pads and rotor. They removed it and it still had 40% life left so no need to replace it right now. That was very honest work right there. Took care of the belt, oils change and air filter for less than $200. I may not be back in the area, but if you are it's always good to know a local honest mechanic. read more

Our alternator died while camping near Long Beach (the night before we had to return home 150 miles away) so I brought our truck to Box K, as they could look at it right away and were the only AAA approved garage in the county (meaning we'd get a 10% discount on labor). When Dan called back with the estimate of $633.45 for the replacement of the alternator and wiring, we were shocked at the cost but also knew we had no choice - getting home was the priority. He told us that not only was the alternator fried, but the wiring from the unit to the battery had grounded and needed replacement. The implication here was that the grounded wiring was what the major issue was. It appears mentioning to him that we were from out of town and stranded was our mistake. When we were given the itemized receipt, we saw that we had been charged $293.69 for the alternator, alone. Back at the campsite I looked under the hood and saw that it was a Napa brand alternator, so I called the Napa Auto Parts store that is literally across the street from the garage, and asked how much this specific part cost, in-store. They told me "$160". Looking online, they are easily obtained for between $80-$120. The wiring kit that needed replacement? $9.85. The total labor? 249.48. $250 dollars labor to replace an alternator we were overcharged $140 for, and replacement of a $10 wiring kit. To be clear, according to their own notes, I OK'd the repair at 2:49 PM, and when I picked up the truck at 4:45, the work was already done, meaning this was $250 for much less than 2 hours of work. While Box K may be great if you're a local, if you're from out of town and are in a vulnerable position, they will clearly not hesitate to exploit your situation for as much money as they can wring out of you. Living on the Peninsula 17+ years, it blows me away that all the mechanic and/or tire shops are ALL closed on Saturday. Thuis is the only day I have available to address such problems. Not only are they closed on weekends, but during the work week they open 8/9 to 5PM. The typical working mans schedule. I find myself every time in need of a mechanic or tire store going to Astoria. I will now go to Astoria even if during the 9 to 5 these businesses keep. They're no help to me so why support them! Plus cheaper across river too boot. Box K is hands down the best shop I have ever had the pleasure of using. I recently had a bearing go out on my boat trailer on a Sunday afternoon when everything was closed. Luckily I was able to leave my trailer at Box K where they worked their tails off to get me a new axle and back on the road by the next weekend. Millie went out of her way to locate the axle and had someone drive to Wilsonville to pick it up. If this were any other shop I would have been broke down for months. The bearings sealed so bad they welded together. I can't say enough about Box K auto!!! These people are amazing!! Please take my review seriously, and trust this shop! read more

Our car broke down right outside the shop yesterday, around 2:15 PM, as we were getting ready to drive 3 hours home. We were informed by the man at reception that they were scheduled at least 1 week out, no exceptions. Nothing he could do. After pressing him, we asked if they could at least check the battery. Someone, I assume a mechanic, came out - connected jumper cables - car started up, then died. Said it was likely the alternator. Told us nothing they could do but recommended repair shop R&M Autor and RV Service 6 blocks up the road. When attempted to start car again, we couldn't. Same person came up to help jump start - except he connected the cables wrong, which led to serious sparks flying - and the entire display of the car dying. Now the car was officially dead. He said oops, corrected the cables, and tried again - to no avail (we later found out that he had actually blown the fuse completely, which led to the R&M's owner having to rebuild the fuse and replacing the alternator). Seriously, a mechanic incorrectly connects the jump start cables??? In the future, a little more kindness, compassion, and help problem-solving for those of us stranded far away from home would be greatly appreciated. Needless to say, I will not frequent this shop again, ever. Today, I purchased a new fuse from Honda - for $12. read more

Would highly recommend Box K! We visited Long Beach and like many tourists got our car stuck in the beach sand. After we were towed out the car rattled as if the tires were going to come off! We thought perhaps it was in need of an alignment or worse - and of course it was a Sunday. We called Box K and on Monday AM showed up at 8. They got us in, cleaned out the car (too much sand in the wheels was all!) and sent us on our way. Great service, friendly, accomodating and home town feel. They were great! Not to mention their shop, surrounding area at the shop and waiting room was clean and not your typical 'repair shop'. Give them a try if ever in need of auto repair in Long Beach. read more

Recently while visiting the beach my alternator went south. The tow truck driver suggested Box K. He said that they are not the cheapest, but the work will be done right. They are super nice and seem very knowledgeable. Knowing we were stranded, they worked very hard to get us squeezed in on a very busy day. Unfortunately the new alternator went out after about 30 miles. The true test of of real customer service is how a business handles a problem and Box K came through with flying colors! Over the years I have used yelp for checking if a business is good or bad. I never really written many good ones but if it is bad I do. Well today I want to give Box K Auto Repair a excellent rating. When I stopped by on Wednesday the service technicians said he would work me in on Friday. I had a squeaky belt and I could not find the problem. My van overheated and I had it towed to Box K for diagnostics. Not really sure what the problem was, but felt comfortable with Box K for this process. Doug called me and indicated that I had a bad water pump (leaking thru weep holes) and quoted me $1500 for water pump and timing belt. He also said that some mice/rats had been nesting in the engine compartment and that the plug wires were looking sketchy. He quoted $500. for replacing plug wires and spark plugs.. I knew it was an expensive job as you have to remove the plenum to get to one of the plugs. Oh yeah, he did say that the #7 plug was fouled or wasn't functioning properly.. I said, "It's a 6 cylinder" He mentioned that he was referring to a different vehicle and then said it was the #5 plug.. Hmmmmm.... I authorized the $1500 for the water pump and timing belt.. Told him to forget about the wires and plugs. Before it overheated it was running fine.. The point is coming...... I got a call later on in the day and Doug said that he had some not so good news.. He said they completed replacing the water pump and timing belt and when they went to test drive and bring it up to operating temps.. it was blowing white smoke out of the exhaust and it over heated!!!. He said he believe that the head gasket is gone and for another $1700 he could replace the head gasket.. I asked him about his diagnostic process and he said with a leaking water pump he couldn't complete the diagnostic process so the pump had to be replaced. Did you check for exhaust gases in the coolant before you changed out the water pump? The old water pump looked really good to me without any noticeable impeller or bearing damage.. Doug said the bearings sounded bad.. I disagreed with him.. The old timing belt looked brand new.. He said "Yeah they might look new but they will go without any warning." I was hot.. This was a total failed diagnostic process. $1500 for work that didn't fix anything! My wife wanted to take them to small claims court.. I would not recommend this shop to anyone.. They ordered the part and called me the next day, offering to take me home while my car was being repaired, and picking me back up when repairs were completed. Plus they give your vehicle a thorough go over for follow up later. It just doesn't get better than this locally or out of the area! Our car broke down while visiting this summer. We were in quite a pickle because we needed parts from the dealer and we needed our car done same day in order to make it home in time for school to start. Millie was amazing. She was able to get parts same day from Portland ,and Mike, our Mechanic, was our superhero and got the work done by 3 p.m. that day! Mike was the reason our car was seen so quickly. He heard we were trapped, knew exactly what needed to be done just from my description of the problem, and asked to squeeze us in first thing. Just genuinely good people, fair prices (definitely did not take advantage of our situation), and treated us like real people.
