Went with a group for lunch on a friday. Large space with lots of seating options inside and out. Food was good. I had the lasagna roll. Their homemade garlic rolls were not great IMHO. They make their pasta in house which is a bonus. Service was good. They did bring all the other orders out several minutes before mine which isnt ideal. A gust of wind blew one of the outdoor umbrellas down around our table which as startling. The manager did stop by out table later and check that we were ok and gave us a 20% discount on the ticket. The service was very good. Our waitress was very attentive. The vibe of the place is very cool as well. Overall the food was pretty good. We got the buffalo chicken sandwich with Parmesan truffle fries. This dish was great. We also got the fish and chips. They were good too but the breading is extremely thick. The Santa Fe Foodies met again at Boxcar, this time we must have had a group of several dozen for the annual Toy Drive. The place was packed! I think everyone I spoke to there loved the food. The service (thanks to Shyan and crew) was outstanding. Went for Happy Hour, where apps are 20% off. So my wife and I concentrated on those offerings. Had the Chicken Tenders because another Foodie recommended them. They were fine, but I'm not much of a chicken tender guy. Moist, tender, but how much can you do with fried tenders? Anyway, good but not my cup of tea. Now what blew me away was the Brussels Sprouts. A few years ago, you couldn't pay me to eat them, but I tried them from a good chef, and that changed my mind about at least trying them. Now I love them. And the rendition at Box Car is off the charts: braised (?), crispy, and perfectly al dente, cooked with bacon and cotija, and finished with a balsamic glaze. I may have to order this dish every time I go. If you're lukewarm to Brussels sprouts, do yourself a favor and try them here; you may end up a fan, as I am now. Lastly, we had the Jalapeño Poppers. The menu states they are the 'best poppers this side of the Mississippi'. I've spent little time on the opposite side of Mississippi, but I'll tell you these were the best I've had west of that state. Just outstanding! Yes, hot, but not brutal for a 30-year resident of NM. But you'll feel them. The cheese stuffing was terrific, and the bacon was excellent. I didn't expect them to be coated in a sumptuous batter and fried perfectly. YUM! Yes, it is loud here, but otherwise, this is a great place to eat, the food is outstanding and far better than I'd expect at a 'sports bar', and the service was stellar. read more

You'd think in New Mexico that a bucket of chips with queso, guacamole, and salsa as sides would be a home run, but it was all but inedible. The queso tasted like it came out a Kraft Mac&Cheese box, the guac lacked any lime, onion and was very short on jalapeño, and the salsa was best of the three, but overly fire-roasted and clearly out of a jar. Not a fresh bite of anything. Server took the still -98% -full plate away and handed us the bill without even asking if there was a reason we did not eat it. Beer was good, and the fish taco was heavily breaded and greasy, but passable as bar food. Won't go back tho. read more

The only complaint I had was that we were there to watch March Madness and when one game ended, they left the audio set to the local news instead of switching it to the next game that was on most screens. One good employee and a good karaoke DJ saved this from being a truly terrible experience. Pool is a room rented (5 dollars per hour) away from everyone else, so no community no vibes, just silent tennis on the TV and mediocre music playing. After serving us multiple drinks, a chud little waiter came to check our IDs and apparently temp. paper IDs are not allowed (it's scanned and been accepted at every other bar in Santa Fe). They then held my fiance's entire wallet in the back and couldn't procure until we made a fuss and Bitknee got it back for us. Default tip was set to 40% btw. Super cool restaurant in Santa Fe! After flying from Phoenix to Albuquerque and driving to Santa Fe, we were hungry! I opened up the Yelp app and found boxcar was still open and noticed they had a huge variety of menu items to choose from. I started off with a cup of the fire roasted vegan chili, which was really good. The roasted poblano peppers in this chili gave it some heat and also a lot of flavor. I liked that the chili was organic as I believe organic food just tastes better. For the entree I ordered the veggie burger, which was also really good. It tasted like the burger was made in house and the fixins on the side were fresh and bright. I ordered this with sweet potato waffle fries, which were also REALLY good. Fun and lively bar restaurant serving great food. I went there on a Saturday afternoon with my dog and we were seated on the outdoor patio. This was another great experience! The servers were friendly and fast, and provided a water dish for my dog. I ordered the bison sliders with truffle fries, and they were delicious as usual! We had just arrived into town and and we were a little hungry so we decided to come here for meal. The place was all opened up so whether you sat inside or on the patio, you felt a nice breeze. It is a sports bar so plenty of TV's to see all around. Justin was our server and he was very good. He is the reason I am giving four stars to this review. I really enjoyed drinking the ExNove Extra Time Red Ale. I have always preferred a red ale and it is hard to find a place that serves one. When I saw it on the menu, I had to have one and this was was exceptionally tasty. I wish I could say my food was good but it just wasn't. I might have ordered the wrong thing but I figured you really can't mess up chicken fingers right?? The chicken was hot but it tasted like it had been sitting for a while. The tots were good though. My daughter enjoyed her Impossible Burger with a side of chili which was definitely New Mexican style. Quite a kick! We had a party of 6 on a Thursday night after 8 pm. While most of the places in town closed at 8, The Boxcar seemed to be just getting started! Justin was our waiter and he couldn't have been more attentive or helpful. When someone in our party asked what his favorite meal was he gave a genuine response listing meal after meal with the favorite part of each meal he listed! We decided to go with the loaded chicken nachos, a couple of beers and a shot of tequila for me =P The nachos were ahhhhmazing, chicken, bean, lots of cheese, hatch green chili ( a must when in NM), guacamole, and sour cream. I decided try their lager and it was alright, my 2nd beer was a Modelo. The restaurant was also very lively on Saturday. A lot of TVs and college football, fans hooting and hollering. Bathroom was very clean. Javier was our server and he was very chill and served with a smile. Nothing to write home about food wise. It was so-so bar food. We ate there only because we were having a hard time finding a place opened after 9pm on a Tuesday in downtown Santa Fe. Nachos were simply bland and seemed like everything was processed, certainly not home made for sure. Friend got three tacos which she said were bland and flavorless. I had a bowl of green chili stew and it was quite good! That is the main reason I gave the place three stars, otherwise it would have been two. Service was a bit slow but there were a lot of tables with people there and I only saw one guy server doing his best to handle all the tables. All in all, meh. read more
