The new kid on the Summit block, Boxwood Coffee, JUST opened today. Across from Starbucks, it's got a battle ahead of itself as far as customer competition. But it shows some good promise. I added it to the Yelp list of businesses, and right away, I'm a fan of their feel and look inside. It's the best original coffee in Summit (pour-over, teas, etc...) Traditional marble countertops and seating tables with nice moldings, a lot of seating, and a spacious layout. I'm a big Starbucks guy, and I've been wanting there to be some alternative - glad Boxeood came along to be a nice switch-up from the specialty coffees Starbucks serve up. Starbucks gets packed, has that hustle and bustle vibe, and gets nuts sometimes. Obviously, it's day one of Boxwood's business, but the space they have seems like it can handle some business and crowds more than Starbucks'. Wood ceramic tiles all over, solid wifi, and a nice menu with a "special" coffee. I'm currently sipping the Honey Cinnamon Latte special, which is pretty good. Flavorful and done right. They have all of your classics: Americano, Cappuccino, Macchiato, Hot Chocolate, and all sorts of teas. Swing by and check them out. read more

There are certain coffee joints that impel the masses to breeze in, grab that non-fat mocha infused caffeine injection, and propel forward through their respective days. Still others invite one to purchase an elixir, settle in, and say, "I bought a coffee; I live here now." With it's expansive espresso stained floors, marble tables, and soaring ceiling, Boxwood coffee's chic interior is an enchanting space to take up residence for a span. While I could not detect the cocoa or caramel notes in the painstakingly hand prepared pour over, it was a satisfying panacea for the exhaustion of modern living. I second guessed the selection of an oatmeal chocolate gluten free treat until sampling a morsel. In a word, scrumptious. The water was wet. The air was warm. The music was pleasant and unobtrusive. The world keeps spinning round, but a brief tenancy at Boxwood could give anyone high hopes. read more

I love Boxwood coffee. It's a veritable coffee oasis in a vast dessert of cookie cutter chain swill in New Jersey. The pour overs are perfectly done. Intelligentsia coffee is a favorite of mine and they have a great selection to choose from. They always have great music playing. The acoustics seem well suited to enjoying a coffee without going deaf. Just a real homey feel. They have plenty of locally sourced goods and teas as well. The servers have been uniformly friendly and well versed in what products they carry. I can't come here without inevitably buying a ton of stuff to take home. I come here every time I'm in Summit. I wish we had this place in Short Hills and in the city. My coffee is so damn delicious and fresh unlike the incorrectly made crap served up burnt at so many of the bigger coffee chains. In fact, it's so damn good that I don't mind the annoying stroller kids parked nearby (at least not yet). Only thing missing is a loyalty card which would be the proverbial icing on the cake. Tried breakfast sandwich today and it was freshly made as well. Crispy bacon, cheddar fully melted, chives and egg on a toasted not nuked English muffin. Yeah it was great. Love the ambiance of the place. Very quaint, love the lime tree, space is bright and good place to get some work done. As always, I got the americano (no sugar or cream). Upon getting it, I opened the top, and I can tell it's going to be on the weak side. After taking a sip, my instincts weren't far off. The taste was suuuuupppppppper mild (too mild) for an americano. I like my americanos nice and strong and packed this the espresso taste. Call me a coffee snob but it's just my darn opinion.lol. What I did like was the serving temperature. Nice and hot. I have been to this place 4 times. It is beautiful inside and is very comfortable. I have had the coffee and tea both were good. They have loose leaf tea which is very good. My problem has been 3 different times I have ordered espresso and I have not enjoyed it at all. It is very bitter to the point of being not drinkable. This may not be an issue for people having a cappuccino or adding flavor or sugar to the coffee. I drink 3 or 4 espresso per day with no sugar. I hope that they improve the espresso in their new Westfield location because I would like to give the business. The staff was very friendly and courteous on all of my visits. read more

This is a bright, spacious, and adorably decorated cafe with a decent selection of coffee and teas. I would have liked to see more variety in terms of specialty drinks but they had a lot of selection for teas and pour overs. I ordered the small cold brew which was good but definitely NOT worth $5. The prices here are just outrageous. I absolutely hate Starbucks and love to support small businesses but seriously I would not come here again because everything was ridiculously overpriced. Yeah! "Real" NYC style coffee in NJ. I stumbled across Boxwood Coffee last weekend while in Summit and was drawn in by the beautiful space. Marble counters, wood floors and shelves of Intelligentsia. I ordered a large latte that was so rich, dense and strong. Simply delicious! Knocked off a star because it took an inordinate amount of time to make a latte with only one person ahead of me waiting. Yawns are silent screams for coffee and Boxwood is worth braving the Summit yoga mom crowd for. read more

Boxwood Coffee has such a lovely, homey atmosphere but it does get very busy. However, even though there was a line out the door on Friday morning, we still had an amazing visit. We were served by a sweet barista, Alexa, who made us feel right at home. She recommended the honey cinnamon lattes and wowed us with the tulip designs on top. We will 100% be back. This place is a hug. This place is taking off your shoes and tie after a long day at work. It is a welcome addition to your day where the staff is knowledgable about their drinks and care about your drink. They will " hold your hand," and guide you through their coffee and tea selection. The presentation of tea in a french press with a cute little glass cup or a fresh dripped coffee in a clear cup adds charm and makes the drink more enjoyable. I came for trivia, as my friends say it is great and with it only happening one Wednesday a month it will certainly become a joyous obligation. The owner steve is a charmer with great charisma and is a clean working British comedian at heart. He cracked me up with his wit, and kept me entertained with a wonderful trivia which was strategic, informative, creative, and most importantly fun. I had a oolong tea in a french press which was a delight. After i finishes i got another batch of hot water and the barista( is that a coffee thing or a starbucks thing,) told me to let it steep a little longer. It is the little things like that, that go a long way in my book. I tasted the coffee my friend got and it was delightful. I am not a coffee snob, but you could tell the coffee was brewed right. Come in and grab a cup of your favorite caffeinated beverage and relax, or take a stroll through Summit and enjoy the community. There are plenty of interesting stores, and delicious restaurants. It is a family affair and all the workers seemed to love their jobs and have a shared passion for not only the beverage but also the experience. We also got a chocolate chip cookie. It wasn't just thrown on a plate. It was warmed to a perfect crispness with the chocolate chips the right amount of melted. Anyway, I love supporting local friendly businesses and I am not even local but when i am in town, this will certainly be a ritualistic destination. I look forward to trying their other tea blends and the various coffees. It is not even about the fancy drinks although they do have them, it is about the techniques, the different beans, the temp of the water , and of course the experience. Boxwood's commitment to its real strength--a variety of wonderfully prepared coffee--has helped me forgive some of its prior shortcomings and impelled me to do something rare: a revised opinion. The place is winning me over, and though I'm rarely in the area, I feel more impelled to visit when I am close by. Even when they run out of certain beans or blends, the always friendly staff tries to accommodate, and the product is such high quality that, as I become the coffee snob I was always meant to be, I feel far more willing to shell out an extra Washington or two (or Susan B. Anthony, or Sacajawea) if needs be. What keeps it from a five star? Well, the plugs still seem in very short supply, and my latest quiche, though tasty, was not fully heated--but that was a minor flaw. And, as evidenced from my track record, I don't give five-star reviews liberally. That said, Boxwood is still a great place for the smart suburban set to kill an afternoon, staying confidently caffeinated all the while. read more

Loved this place. The ambiance, the atmosphere and the coffee is just great . They also have a tiny cup for kids as well.The interior of the coffee shop is quite nice. They also have some exposed brick on the walls which gives it a rustic look and complements its modern furnitures. The menu is written in chalk , so I am assuming that it changes regularly. This is a great new coffee shop in Summit. I love the friendly staff and the beautiful décor. If you are interested in supporting local business, this would be a place to visit as the owners live in the area. Have to admit, although I love coffee and enjoyed having options for almond milk, the hot chocolate is delicious. Apparently they make their own chocolate syrup! If you haven't tried it yet, you need to. So many yummy teas to choose from, as well. I am anxiously waiting for them to find a producer for vanilla so I can order my almond milk vanilla latte! I stopped by Boxwood on my way to a Starbucks because I love smaller local coffee shops. The decor and atmosphere is great: comfy seating and beautiful sitting areas. Their prices aren't bad at all and I like some of the unique menu offerings like Cardamon Vanilla Matcha Latte and their extensive tea offering. I was a little disappointed that they ran out of almond milk. I have been working hard to be dairy free and they ran out of almond milk, which I believe is something they could go out an pick up quickly to accommodate dairy-free drinkers. Also the best part of Matcha teas is the beautiful presentation of the latte in a cup. I was excited for this and made my order "for here" for that very reason. I received my matcha latte in a to go cup sadly. With that being said the latte was good. Loved the punch of Matcha, but it could have had more cardamon to really hit that spicy flavor profile. read more

I am so happy! I visited the new Boxwood Coffee shop this morning. I had a proper hand brewed cup, deliciously prepared by the warm, friendly and knowledgeable barista. The ambiance is warm and comfortable, and I look forward to meeting friends here to linger over a hot beverage. The tea selection is also very nice - there are tester containers so you can smell the leaves before brewing a cup. The honey is sourced locally (as is the tea). Food options are limited to snacks at this point, but the barista told me that the owner will be expanding in that department. Woo-hoo! Check it out!! read more

I'm originally from Seattle and hadn't found a good coffee shop around here until Boxwood opened up in December. I have dropped by on my commute a dozen times and loved it every time. Service- The baristas are friendly, knowledgeable, diverse, and dedicated to making you a good cup a joe. The owners are also very proactive about responding to requests and have added more pour-over setups, which take a little longer than normal coffee to make but are delicious and well worth the wait. Shop- Conveniently located just down the street from the train station, the shop is always bright and clean, with nice hardwood floors and tables, brick walls, marble counter-tops, and a comfy couch. The wifi is solid, the music is relaxing, and shop is spacious. If you hang out to enjoy your drink, you will see Boxwood already has its regulars, from joggers to commuters to students. Coffee- Boxwood uses the tasty Intelligentsia brand coffee, which is also direct/fair trade. The presentation is particularly nice on the lattes, which the baristas do foam art on. Most everything is done by hand by the baristas rather than automated, so everything has that personal and local touch. For the quality of the coffee and the service going into it, the prices are really reasonable! Tea- Boxwood also has Tay loose leaf teas, an awesome chai latte, and a new herbal rooibos latte that it just started making today! Everything Else- This place also has some tasty pastries, yogurt parfaits, Naked juices, etc. It also has gluten-free products, soups, and locally-produced honey sticks, which I haven't tried but have heard good things about. You can also buy packages of coffee and tea, french presses, gift cards, etc. This place is fantastic, and I am excited to see what else it will offer! You should definitely check it out. read more

Nice cafe for starbucks drinkers, not for real coffee drinkers though-- y'all won't like this. Shots are usually under-extracted, pour overs are messy, kinda unsanitary place overall... but if you're used to drinking peppermint mocha pumpkin spice lattes and Frappuccinos then you'd like this. I think this place is adorable! The mint green tea lemonade spritzer is to die for! I liked it so much when I first had it that I went back a second time a few hours later. I would say a bit on the pricey side (based on the tea) for a cafe but totally worth it. The items are much more unique than Starbucks across the street but a bit more expensive. Good coffee is hard to come by in North Jersey and it always starts with the bean. Using Intelligentsia beans are a good sign, and the preparation of the coffee is pretty good, too. Especially with the pour overs. Efficient service and a clean, well laid out space is also a good sign. Beans, tea and equipment for retail is a plus. read more

Great espresso, and probably the best in the best in Summit (I have not tried EVERY espresso shop in the area). Still not necessarily worth the trip out of the way, but I'm definitely thankful to be able to have something better than the 'black water swill' every diner around it tries to pass off as 'coffee'.
