Stop by last night for an event the store hosted, and it was refreshing to see how this venerable store has revamped itself for the ladies! I had not passed by since before the pandemic so it's definitely been a while for me, but I was pleasantly surprised to see the array of upscale offerings here in Center City. It was mostly accessories that would appeal to me, since unlike Saks Fifth Avenue, they do not have a plus size section aka anything north of a size 10 in clothing. But their handbags and their shoes were as beautiful as they come. If you're looking for anything from Victoria Beckham, I think this might be the one place in Philadelphia to find her dresses. But the store gets props for featuring a handmade cashmere and mohair sweater line that was simply dazzling! I was inspired enough that I will return! read more

TLDR: Fantastic help from Lindsay, but disappointed with the rest of the sales associates. I visited recently to purchase a coat and was surprised how difficult it was to get assistance. Several associates passed by without acknowledging me or offering help. Thankfully, Lindsay stepped in and turned the experience around. She was personable, attentive, and genuinely helpful. She took the time to pull different options, make thoughtful suggestions, and never made me feel rushed or pressured. Her patience and professionalism are exactly what you hope for when visiting a store like this. She's the reason I stayed, and the reason I'll consider coming back. A friend of mine purchased a suit at Boyd's and touted it was a custom fitted/tailored Zegna suit. Ermenegildo Zegna is one of the most famous fashion designers in history, and his fabrics and textiles are premium Italian. However, Zegna suits once they have arrived at their retailers in the United States are only as good as the tailor who customizes them for the client. My friend paid north of $3k for this suit. Pass. I came to Boyd's today for the first time looking for a blazer for a board meeting I have next week. There had to be at least 10-20 employees there in the women's section and not a single one acknowledged my existence. In fact, one even was lurking near me and never sought to see if I needed assistance. And if I'm going to drop a grand on a jacket, I am not doing so somewhere they don't value customers. How often do you go on vacation and one of the highlights is going to a department store and not buying anything? For me, once. We were in Philadelphia last week for a Radiohead concert and stayed across the street from Boyd's so we stopped in. The store is beautiful and I love the way the men's department is laid out. When we stopped on the men's clothing department floor, we were greeted by Joe M and he couldn't have been more gracious. He showed me a few sports coats (and they have all my favorites...Canali, Zegna and the like) and finding out we were on vacation, he threw in a few great restaurant recommendations. I couldn't buy anything at that moment but Joe was incredibly gracious and the ultimate professional. If you live in the area, I find it hard to believe there are better options than Joe and Boyd's. I just had the WORST shopping experience of my entire life at Boyd's. I was there four years ago and had the most impeccable service ever! I was specifically looking for a reversible winter coat, I tried on two coats - one I absolutely was in love with - and advised the salesperson I was definitely buying one and very likely both. I asked her to hold them while I shopped UPSTAIRS in the men's department, yes, in the same store, with my husband. We could not have been more than 30 min and returned to purchase the coats, When I returned downstairs to purchase the coats, I was told one of them (my absolute favorite which was quite unique and a great price) was sold to another customer while I was upstairs! The sales clerk said there was a hold tag on the coats. She was apparently helping another customer when this coat was rung up and did not understand how that could have happened, In my experience, in a supposedly high end and high service store as Boyd's of former days, if there were a hold tag on an item? a sales person would surely check with the other sales people to ask if it was indeed for one of their customers. This sales person did not even seem sorry about the matter. I then asked for a discount on the other coat for the error and was told " it's already on sale". I don't fall in love with items in stores lately and it was so exciting to find that special something that made my heart sing all to have it sold out from under me. I never dreamed that sort of thing would ever happen at Boyd's There was no offer to talk to the manager or any sign contrition or trying to make it right. When I simply walked out of the store stunned, no one tried to stop me . End of an era as far as I am concerned. I wondered in here two days before Christmas because I was looking for a high end bomber jacket because mine had just broken. There aren't many high end stores downtown, but I was walking past Boyd's on the way to the trolley so I decided to stop in. Little did I know, I was about to walk into my first experience being profiled in a high end store in my entire 29 years in this earth. So I walked into the store behind a couple of people to browse the racks. I look to my right and notice a large white man in all black standing behind a podium. As I looked over, I caught him moving his little camera on his desk to point it directly at me. I knew I caught him doing something he knew was wrong because he looked up at me and seemed startled a bit that I caught him. I looked him right in the eye and walked on to look at the coats. By the way, the coat selection as disgraceful. What's a store with no product? An expensive room. I'm surprised they turn a profit, but when you're the only high end department store in town, it's not surprising. As I began to walk out, disappointed that I wasn't able to local a coat and embarrassed that I was watched for the duration of my time in the store, the security guard loudly and mockingly yelled "yeah, have a good day." Mind you, he didn't greet me on the way in except when our eyes met as he got caught profiling me. I also want to note that I'm an Ivy League educated lawyer with lots of friends and colleagues that have the wherewithal to shop here. I will tell every one of them not to come here. I was so offended and I will never ever step foot in this establishment again. Management should really be ashamed of themselves. read more

I have been struggling to find a dress for my company's annual gala that's in my price range, is appropriately formal, and doesn't look cheap. I figured I would try this place since I had never been there before. I can confidently say that someday, when I do have more disposable income, I will never go back to Boyd's. Before I could even look at any clothes, a Sales Associate halfheartedly asked questions about what I was trying to find. Once she heard my price point, she nearly laughed at me. She just said, 'No, no," and I walked away (right after the awkward pause where I thought she might say something like, "Sorry about that, maybe you can try (store) or (store)." Nope.) No one should ever be made to feel foolish for wanting to spend a reasonable amount of money and still look nice. Marble staircases like out of Gone With The Wind, valet, glass floors (no skirts, girls) and tons of tailors waiting to make that skirt or suit fit you perfectly. This store carries modern wares with a classic, gentlemanly touch. Expect super high-end price tags but great service. But this is the kind of place that would turn Julia Roberts away in Pretty Woman. read more

I just had a great experience with Boyds. My husband purchased a shirt from them recently. It needed alterations (which is done free of additional charge). For a variety of reasons we wished to return it. I contacted Boyds. They agreed that because the alterations had not yet been done, the shirt could be returned. This entire transaction was done by phone. The people who assisted me could not have been more helpful. Note--we are not regulars at Boyds--there service was polite and helpful nonetheless! read more

Oh boy...where to start? I shopped at Boyds for close to 40 years. Spent tens of thousands there ( probably more) It was an entire experience for me. I loved going there. People said hello and the ownership was good to me. Things have changed for the worse. The now sole owner who has seen me come in for years has NO time to say "hello." In fact he sat beside m on a plane ride to Florida and had no idea who I was. Just creepy, rude and arrogant. His father who was in a wheelchair always said hello and was a good man. My favorite people have left or been forced out. The renovation is terrible and they are trying to be a NY style store and that is not working. The sales are more constant than ever which makes me wonder what is going on. I now go to NY and get what I need. Just sad and a loss for me. read more

I agree with many of the postings that Boyd's has nice clothes, and that the salespeople are uppity and arrogant. Case in point - I bought three sport coats and four pairs of slacks in June. I joked that maybe I should get a volume discount - the response was "that is not the way gentleman buy clothes". I let it slide. One of the pairs of slacks happened to be on sale - big thrill - but then they charged for the tailoring of the slacks which brought them back up to regular price - not the act of gentlemen sellers but more like money whores. Clothes were shipped to me a month later. All good except one pair of slacks where the fly zipper repeatedly separated from the bottom. Took them in and they said it would take two weeks to repair - I asked if they could do it in 11 days, since I would not be back in town for a few weeks - my mistake! Picked the slacks up, nicely pressed, and took them on a business trip to Houston. Dressed for my day in the only slacks on my 3 day trip and the fly zipper still opened from the bottom. They had never touched the zipper repair!!!!!! I go down the the front desk at the Marriott to get safety pins - and they gave me two sewing kits - each with a very small safety pin. Trying to rig appropriate closure system so I could go to work - I finally sewed the zipper shut - most of the way - so I could still get the slacks on. What a pleasant experience! I can live with arrogance and premium pricing when it is delivering a quality product and quality service. It is quite another thing when it is delivering a sub-standard product accompanied by basic incompetence. My slacks are back with Boyd's to see if they can actually replace the zipper this time. It is their last try, as I have already spent more in Uber charges back and forth to their store, than the slacks were worth ! Just know what to expect when you patronize them. How to explain Boyds? Recently renovated, certainly (the removal of the lower section of the Marble Staircase was, to be fair, a crime against humanity and the architect should be given a fair trial and be imprisoned without the chance of parole). Modern, well kind of. So what is it and why 5 stars. Simply this. Boyds doesn't exist any more. Everywhere else in the world the existence of a store where a man (and we are talking about men here, I cannot comment on the ladies part of the store) can walk in off the street with a need to dress for a particular occasion, be it work, leisure or pleasure, and walk out knowing that in 2 weeks he will be exquisitely outfitted from head to toe for whatever that event may be, has gone. Passed by at the end of the last century (except perhaps for Saville Row). Deader than a parrot in a comedy sketch. Yet here in this tiny time warp Boyd's still thrives on a simple need that most men have. To walk in off the street and say 'I am attending a traditional Indian wedding in Napa / Kathmandu in September. Dress me' and be met with the unflustered response 'Joe, could you help Mr Wright with a semi formal warm weather event in California / slightly damp mountain weather outfit' and be whisked into a world of flattering clothes and unknown possibilities. Christmas party, check. Client board meeting, check. Polo match in the Hamptons followed by an evening on your hosts yacht? How would I know, I'd sooner have a poke in the eye with a sharp stick than go to the Hamptons. Why wait 2 weeks? Because alterations are included and there is nothing in the world worse than a man in a suit that doesn't fit. And let's be honest, most guys barely try their clothes on before buying let alone get them fitted. But in Boyds this is not an option, you must not, indeed cannot, leave without the approval of Sergio, the Chief Taylor, or one of his many elves (sorry, tailors). A button out of place will be fixed. Coats, jackets and pants fitted to flatter whether you are fit and muscular or rather portly. Now this isn't men's wearhouse, you won't get a suit or jacket for $200. The fact that they have a parking lot opposite with free validated parking so you can drive in from the mainline and park your Porsche next to every other mid life crisis Porsche while you shop (most patrons are well heeled men in their 40's and 50's. Did I say well heeled? Doh, they shop at Boyd's) let's you know the kind of folks who shop here. It is the old city, western main line, chadds ford or upper Makefield crowd. The experience here is perfect. From the second you arrive on the appropriate floor someone will offer to help you and guide you to an appropriate style consultant. They will help you shop, ensure what you buy suits your style and budget, encourage or discourage you with appropriate comments ('suits you sir', or 'I'm sorry when you sit down those jeans are slightly pornographic') and ensure you make a good choice. They will help you hone in on casual jeans that fit (guys, face it. For most of you your jeans don't fit and make your ass look like someone poured a bag of rubble into it), or the perfect shirt, tie and pocket square to meet a middle eastern princess. Nothing, no request or need, phases the good folks here. So for saving me from my own poor taste and shotgun approach to shopping, from over snug jeans and tie patterns that offend Muslim cultures, for making sure my wedding party looked picture perfect, and for guiding me away from several last minute fashion disasters, I have to give them 5 stars. This establishment is better than Bergdorf Goodman and Barney's combined. i had a wedding this past weekend in philadelphia, but i didn't have a tux, as i had forgotten mine on the train! my friend told me of Boyd's, so i paid them a frantic visit on Saturday morning at 9am. The wedding was that same evening: A) Free valet parking B) Free alterations. They had roughly 10 different tuxedos in my size. The tux I chose (brand is Isaia) needed a ton of alterations because i'm short and fat- haha. nevertheless, their tailor shop of 40 tailors (they told me it's the largest in the country) had it altered and delivered to my hotel, for free, by 1pm ON THE SAME DAY. It arrived with a hand-written note thanking me for my patronage. the tuxedo fit like a GLOVE. C) i ultimately purchased 3 more suits along with shirts, ties, and 2 pair of shoes. it has been 5 days since these 3 suits were altered. i didn't even ask for a rush on them, and they've already altered and shipped the 3 suits to my apartment in NYC with free, expedited shipping. i am going back with my wife in March for a "boyd's" weekend. it's a huge and gorgeous store with unbelievable service. Boyd's is the Bergdorf's of Philadelphia. The legions of attendants are polite and very willing to help. They pay attention to you no matter how you are dressed or how much money you came to spend. The decor is amazing, the floors expansive. Oh yeah, and there's a cafe by a world-class chef inside of it. read more

I have had only one experience with Boyd's and unfortunately for them it will be my last. I was looking for a Moncler jacket and happened to see it listed on their website. So I gave them a ring to make sure they actually had some in stock. I mentioned the exact model name and color I wanted. Not only did the person on the phone say they had in stock, but they had it in a couple sizes so I could make sure to find the right size. Thankfully the parking is free and the parking attendants were great. When I walked into the store I was quickly told they had been sold out for quite some time. Wow thanks for wasting my time Boyd's. After visiting Neiman I was told by a friendly associate there that this is quite common. Thankfully Bloomingdale's pulled through and was happy to ship me both sizes and let me return the one I didn't need. If I ever need something again, I'd rather go to NYC than visit Boyd's. read more

Save your money and go elsewhere. I am not sure what people mean when they say service at this place is great because in my experience (after being a customer here a few times) service is awful. 1. Salespeople rush you and offer way too many opinions of their own - shut up and let me shop. 2. Salespeople are annoying - they offer you their cards, I mean is that a joke! First who uses cards anymore and second I don't want you following me when I shop. 3. Selection is so and so, when I was trying on gucci shoes sales person did not even bring me the second shoes! Everytime I walk by Boyd's, I dream of the day when I can walk inside to get suited and booted. No matter how old school, rich, White, and Republican the image their store projects, I love everything in the window, and I envy anybody coming in or out. Absolutely beautiful store. I cannot comment on the women's clothing but I did buy a suit, some shirts and a blazer from them. I was very disappointed in the blazer and the suit simply was not worth the money. The blazer is handsome but the first time I wore it two buttons fell off. Now, they were not "buttoned" when they fell off so it was not my girth or some lesser stress! I took the blazer back and they apologized. I was told this was a common problem with the brand and they fixed it immediately. And then it happened again the next time I wore it. I paid about $1k for the blazer so I was annoyed. I took it back again and they replaced the metal buttons with plastic. I was disappointed. Then several of the plastic buttons "sheared" and broke at the dry cleaner. I simply stopped wearing the blazer after wearing it only three times. read more

Boyds is the place for men who want to shop in a store that has the finest brands, tremendous selection and superior tailors. Also be serviced by sales reps who actually are helpful. Throw in free parking and bring man's best friend (dog) along with you. The only establishment in Center City that has what you want and can pull if off in an actually relaxing environment. Stop on the second floor and ask for Albert and/or Denise if you want the best of what Boyds has to offer. Went to a private event at Boyd's last night for Philadelphia Collection 20101 (Philly's version of Fashion Week). The theme was Bella Italia and they had great food from several vendors including DiBruno Bros., Yogorino, Le Castagne and more. Plus a DJ, live opera singers and models who posed as mannequins wear prada and gucci etc. They had a Vespa and a Maseratti parkes out front. It was a blast! And my 5 year old came too (despite aghast looks from salefolk) and tried on a fabulous pair of purple & black velour Prada shoes. (And some $1300 Manolo's - she's a gal after my own heart.) I swear I'm gonna buy them for her the minute her feet are big enough. Too Cute. read more

Sure, one might be intimidated by the large number of staff but when I went there a month back to buy a new sports jacket, they were just great. For one, when I had actually decided on my purchase, one old guy pushed a button on the wall and another old guy popped out to take my info down. Then, another button was pushed, which produced a the tailor. There was a button for every guy in the spot. Old school. I was measured and fitted and a week later, I had my new jacket, which is quite dapper, hamdulillah. Sure, if you walk in and start looking at the prices you'll realize that Boyd's ain't Macy's. PROS: Gorgeous architecture, friendly staff, quiet and uncrowded. CONS: Small women's selection, staff didn't know enough about the lines of clothing. This place had always seemed too intimidating to go into but their big sale sign lured me in. The sales woman was incredibly friendly and chatty. She was all about me finding a good bargain. I was expecting attitude and snobbery and it is not at all what I got. Still, she didn't seem to know a ton about the clothing lines or even what they carried. And their women's clothing section is extremely small compared to their men's clothing. I was disappointed that for the price tag they didn't sell higher quality clothes made in American or the EU. If I am paying this much for my clothes, I'd rather it not be crap from China. In the end I walked out with a Rag and Bone top that I love. And although it was still expensive even on sale, I know it is going to become a wardrobe staple that I will wear a ton. read more

Winter shoe sale has begun. The designer selection is small, but it's one of the few places in Center City where you can get designer shoes. The sales people are just the way I like them. Polite, available, & give you space to browse in peace. The only drawback is I purchased a pair of boots on sale but the cashier charged me regular price. I didn't notice until I came home and looked at my receipt. I immediately called store and the sales associate acknowledged error and credited my account. Simply the most incredible experience a man can have shopping for formal clothing in Philadelphia. Boyds is incredibly customer-friendly, their staff is wonderful and knowledgable, and while their selection is enormous you will find yourself trying on only a handful of items that your salesperson knows will fit your style and body type. It is not the cheapest place to buy a suit. But it's a rewarding experience if you're going to splurge. And of course they have plenty of formal accessories, high-end men's casual clothes, casual and formal footwear for men, plus all kinds of current clothing and accessories for the ladies as well. Let's be honest. If you don't feel like driving out to King of Prussia or Bala Cynwyd to indulge yourself, Boyd's is kind of the only place in center city to go shopping for Prada/YSL/Manolo/Lanvin/Moncler, among others. Until about six months ago, I had a hard time enjoying myself at Boyd's because the sales personnel aren't exactly solicitous. I get it, you know someone, you work with that someone whenever you go into this store and you're not expected to look around for a salesperson when you have a question. But ater I started working with a sales associate, my experience changed completely. That being said, if you go shopping for shoes here, ask for Kimberly. She is AWESOME. She will work with you and give you honest advice on what looks good and what does not. When I stopped by on a random afternoon in December, I was looking around and didn't see anything I liked. Kimberly came over and kindly mentioned that the sale that was going on would continue until January if I didn't see anything I like. This is also the only store in the world where you can actually benefit from signing onto a mailing list, as their sales aren't advertised. read more

Whenever I have an itch for Valentino or Gucci, Boyds is my scratching post. Boyds is the last off its kind in Philly for truly old-school service in a gracious and grand setting. Indeed, my long-standing mourning for Nan Duskin and Toby Lerner is somewhat assuaged when I visit Boyds. Here you will find a brilliantly curated collection of high-end designer duds complemented by extraordinarily talented sales consultants. I love an honest opinion when I am about to spend boucoup bucks on a garment. One cannot help but feel like a million dollars after a productive visit here. This is, hands down, a quality institution with quality product and quality service. Yes, it is for the Gentlemen (the mens sections, that is). What I have bought there in the past has earned compliments and have lasted a long time.
