I purchased a Groupon because I needed a smog check for my vehicle registration. Based on the description, it sounded like the service would include certification. When I arrived, I was greeted politely and offered small treats while I waited, which I appreciated. However, the owner was on the phone, and I sat waiting for about five minutes. Once he got off the call, he told me that they do not currently offer certified smog checks. He explained that they have just opened and are still waiting for approval to become a certified smog check business. He suggested that I check back in 2-3 weeks, or possibly even 4 weeks, in hopes that they would be certified by then. Unfortunately, this information was not clear in the Groupon description, and I left feeling upset, frustrated, and disappointed. I first went here a couple of years ago when I needed a test-only smog check. Strangely enough, even though I live within walking distance of this place, it never crossed my mind to go here until I did a quick search for 'smog' on craigslist! Basically, I wanted the best price... =P So the verdict back then - cheap, fast, and convenient! Today, without an appointment, I just went in for a regular smog check and it was pretty much the same as last time. I had to wait a little bit (no more than 10 minutes) since he was working on somebody else's car. I didn't mind since I had my PSP to keep me entertained. =D Once it was my car's turn, he told me to have a seat in the waiting area. It seemed like just 5 minutes had passed when he came into the waiting area. I thought he forgot to get my signature on something, but he was already done doing the smog check! I signed a couple more papers, paid him, and off I went. I was in and out in about 20 minutes! The grand total came out to be $28, which still makes this place the cheapest since I saw most of the other prices at $30*. (* = another $8.25 for the smog certificate and $1 to $3 ET fee, so those other places would actually be closer to $40) So, just like before, I am very pleased with the awesome, speedy service and recommend anybody needing a smog check to go here! Halfway through the test another customer came and asked him a question then afterwards the Stanley totally forgot about my test and started working on another car. So I went up to him after 10 mins and said did you forget about my test and he goes "I said 30 mins remember?" Then I told him I think the computer is timing out that's why I'm asking. He said "oh ok, thank you". He then went to turn off my car, pressed continue working on the computer and walked back to work on that car again. I'm like wtf. I called to confirm the cash only promotion still exists and of course I was quoted at $28 with a coupon which I was told can be printed from their website www.brakeplustestonly.com When I went onto the website, there's a coupon for $20 off from a $49 smog check but I also noticed the weekly ad for a smog check at $24.75. So I printed the coupon and the weekly ad and showed the mechanic the weekly ad promotion and he honored it. I love it when a mechanic doesn't try to make more money out of me. They tacked on so many fees it came out to $65 with the coupon, so I left because I dont agree with that business practice. If you dont have your renewal paper, they charge extra to type it in manually. What kind of BS is that? They said they would charge extra because I had a Mercedes. What kind of BS is that? And charge extra because it was A 1995 which needs an EVAP test. Their coupon discloses the extra charge for the 1995 cars, but not the extra fee for typing in the info, or because its a Mercedes. So for most cars older than 1995 this is NOT the cheapest place. In fact I went elsewhere and got it done for $50 total, with no BS addon fees and no wait. Check out my other reviews to see it. Came here with my 2003 Toyota for a smog check only. Used the coupon, read all the instructions and pass with flying color. In and out of there without any issue. 1995 or older car: Nope 4 cyclinder: Yup Heavy duty vehicle, truck or van: Nope As simple as that, you can use their coupon. I know they don't do re-test for free like other stations when you fail the smog test but this place offers a low price. I know my car will likely pass so I took the chance. California Smog check requires visual inspection and functional check and then also the emission test. So if you fail anywhere in the test, the smog test will not be pass. As a regular driver who doesn't know anything about cars, you can only make sure the engine light is not on and your fuel cap is okay before you come here. Otherwise don't take the chance. I came here since I needed to get a Smog test to renew my DMV registration. The reason I came to this location.... A local advertisement in the paper (PennySaver) has a coupon for the cheapest price I've seen in the area. This place can get busy because of their coupons, you wait approximately 20-25 minutes per car waiting to get tested so bring something to read or you can start filling out your Yelp draft on your smart phone like I am. I only had two people ahead of me so not too bad. Even explained to me that smog check, test and inspection are all the same the only difference as of two years ago is weather you need to have it done at a Star credited location which will state on your renewal. I believe most places charge for the certificate, older model cars, larger engines and retesting so be aware. This place is cash only. I found a coupon in the Advertiser! Prob saved $10. Hmmm...sounded a little suspicious, like their main goal was to get the $400+ repair. So I took my car to another smog station, this time Test-Only, the next day. IT PASSED. My car failed the smog and if I do the repair there they will smog it free again if not they will charge again there's no free smog if you failed. There are many free smog again shop out there. The repair price they give me is way over price and say it take an hour and a half to repair so I didn't take it. Yay! These guys are awesome! Showed up this afternoon without an appointment but with a printed coupon and my DMV form to get a smog check on my '02 Audi A6 3.0 Quattro. Kevin who handles all the smog inspections was smiling, charming, professional, and quick. When I asked about brake work, he referred me to Andrew, the manager (?) inside. Andrew checked out my brakes front and back and actually gave me a better report than I'd gotten from my regular mechanic. Then, he gave me an informal verbal estimate and a detailed tutorial on German-make cars' brakes versus others. When I asked about checking the air pressure on my tires, Kevin offered to handle that. He pointed out the green valve caps that indicated my tires were filled w/ nitrogen instead of just plain ol' air. When I said I'd added air previously, he cautioned against that. Andrew also pointed out that the wear on the front tires indicated it was definitely time for a rotation and alignment. Ended up draining all the nitrogen-air mixture and refilling the tires w/ good ol' plain air. No charge for his time and work. Just a great big smile...just like the one I had as I drove away. I'll be back in a couple weeks for the alignment and tire rotation. I'm pretty picky about customer service. Maybe it's because I came in with a smile and an expectation that I'd receive good service, but everyone with whom I engaged were super friendly and professional. I'm really happy I found them. Plus! They advertise for $21.75 for smog check on SF Advertiser but told us our car was not included and charged us $47. The machine showed "passed" but the technician Stanley said the air intake leaked and would not let us pass. He said the smog retest would be free if we let him do the repair, otherwise he would charge us for retest. This is BS because all the other smog check stations we have gone before offer free 2nd time test if your car doesn't pass the 1st time. We went to Westlake Smog Check the 2nd day and passed with no problem at all. The place seizes every opportunity to steal your money. Regarding Smog Checks, Stanley is very patient and quite good. I have a diesel truck that falls in the black hole area of emissions (smog never required, now they are) and it didn't quite test right. In the end, after Stanley tried to complete the test it was aborted and the report said I needed to go see a Smog Referee. (This was after Stanley restarted his smog equipment and performed a self diagnosis check) After Stanley explained what will happen next he charged me a very fair price (for the time he spent trying to complete the smog check) and said after the State Referee, come back and he'll complete the smog. This used to be my favorite place to get a smog, been going here for a few years smogging multiple cars and recommending them to family and friends. There's only one service bay and Kevin works alone so there's usually a wait but he used to have a good attitude and was a pretty friendly reasonable person so I didn't mind. Recently I went in with my usual smile and friendly attitude and he nearly bit my head off. First he wanted to charge me double the advertised price, then he started lecturing me about how he wasn't making enough money with everyone taking advantage of the craigslist and pennysaver coupons and how sixty bucks was perfectly reasonable for a standard vanilla smog. Keep in mind a standard smog these days isn't even a tailpipe test, all they have to do is hookup the computer and see if there are any codes. The whole thing should take 5 minutes tops. After waiting around 30 minutes for him to finish up the one car ahead of me, he went to work on my car and took another 20 minutes or so to do my smog. He was still fuming about something afterwards so I just paid my bill and got the hell out of there. Look everyone has bad days and money problems but it's not the customer's fault if they want to take advantage of an advertised discount.
