I had to get my Honda Accord emissions fixed so I looked on Yelp for reviews. This place is super close to the house so I decided to bring this into the shop so they can take a look at it. The reviews look stellar 4.5/5 so I didn't think it would be an issue. I pulled up to the shop in the morning. Told the owner that I had an issue with the emissions monitors (o2 and catalytic sensors) not getting into ready mode. He said you just need to drive it more. But I already drove it a lot! Over 300 miles since I first discovered this issue (changed the battery back in April and the computer hasn't registered a pass since). Anyway I told him I thought something was off about it and he sent one of his techs to plug the scanner into the OBDII port. Sure enough, nothing was wrong. He suggested the drive cycle for the vehicle, driving 55 mph, cruise control, etc etc. I said but I tried that! The owner comes back and says okay leave the car here and I'll do the drive test for you. The cost is $150. So I then asked, what if you don't figure out the issue? He said, it's still going to be $150. How much for a smog check? $70, then he walks away and starts working on something else. I'm not about to build rapport as others have mentioned here. The shop is so busy that they have bigger fish to fry and couldn't be bothered to look at the issue. It was right then that I decided maybe I should go somewhere else and get a second opinion. Off to Portola Auto Service I went and I actually got a really nice and honest shop that knew exactly the deal. Not only that, he has earned a new customer as a result. My biggest fear is bringing my car to the shops not knowing if the mechanics or workers are sexist, rude, or mark up prices because they assume women don't know anything about cars. But this place is THE BEST. They're always so willing to help and they don't talk down to women!! Prices are affordable and wait times vary. I usually go early in the morning right before they open and it will take an hour which I'm always happy to wait. I've gone in the afternoon before and it gets really busy so be aware. Took my chances and drove over without an appointment. Luck would have it that they could fit me in without much wait. And before I knew it I was all done. This repair shop is part of the Shell Gas Station on the corner of San Bruno Ave and Silver Ave. I arrived at about 8:45am for a smog check and was initially discouraged to see a lot of cars scattered around the two service bays. But I was greeted politely by a service technician as I arrived, and was told to pull up behind another person who was in line for a smog check too. As luck would have it, the customer in front of me was dropping off their vehicle, so I was next! I got a quote, and a 10 minute lead time. Henry was super busy scurrying around checking on other cars and fielding phone calls but always remained professional and polite. I was in and out in less than 15 minutes. Superb. read more

Henry does excellent customer service at this place! I was driving on 101 and got a piece of plastic around a tire beginning dandling and scratching the road. I had no time to replace the whole plastic thing around the tire.. and was confused and nervous about the noise that it was making. I stopped my car by the first repair place at the road. I am lucky that it was this car repair station - I saw all the guys working hard while that station was packed with cars waiting attention at that Saturday morning. Henry came over, examined the problematic tire and immediately helped - with a drill and a few self-sealed plastic treads he fixed the dandling peace immediately. And he refused to take money for that! I wanted to pay with my a card as I did not have cash with me but he did not take payment! Great prices, guys come off as very nice. However be prepared to build rapport with the guys here. This is my 3rd or 4th time changing a tire here. I am not a small talker. I am not the type to build a relationship with strangers, especially mechanics who I have bad experiences with in the past. I'll come in, expect people to do their jobs, I pay and say thank you, and then Im out. I also only speak English and I do not want to force the mechanics to speak a language they are not proficient at. This time around I dropped off my car at 1. I told them I will be back to later. I show up at 4. My car was parked across the street. I went to check if my car is done. It wasn't started, no big deal here as they seem to be busy. However upon looking around my car I discovered that the person who drove it there scratched my rim on the sidewalk. Red flag already, I drive a 16 Lexus with nice rims btw. I go back to sit on the chair in front of the shop to let them know that I'm here and waiting. They made the effort to not work on my car even though I was before everyone else. One mechanic even mugged at me as he walked past me as I was sitting. Like bro Idgaf just do your job..... I don't small talk. I was the last car out that day and they had me wait for 1+ hour. It was 6pm but shop closes at 5:30pm Again all of this because I am not a small talker. Beware. Overall I would recommend this place just because of price and location. However if you frequent here be prepare to build rapport or they will give you the short end of the stick. I do not believe I will be here again unless I need some same day work done. read more

If you don't mind waiting while they repair 4 or 5 cars while your car is waiting to be tended to then this is your place. Cost was twice what others in San Francisco are charging. When I mentioned my surprise at the $80 they told me that it was usually $99. My fault, I didn't ask price when I went in. An hour and 45 minutes for a 15 minute smog test. Might have been longer if I hadn't reminded them that I had been there for some time. Would I go there again? I don't think so. read more

First and foremost, they had a check-in deal which may or may not be available leaving the price to 45 with smog certificate included. The station is close to the freeway attached to a Shell gas in the Portola. The station is STAR Certified which is a must for those who've had to use for their smog test. The lot may look a little packed but they will usually take around 10-20 min for the whole test which is awesome. Super fast, will come again if needed for a STAR smog check!!! read more

Great place to go! Just went to get my car smogged. It took a while for the 1999 and older cars but luckily my car was newer than 2000 so the process went by faster. Plug in the OBD, let the car idle, and presto! Would come here again for the biannual inspection! ---Look for coupons for this place!
