Can I say best veggie tamales ever? I mean, it was my first time to eat veggie tamales but dang it they were good. Not too much tamale dough, just enough veggies, side items (black beans and green sauce) were perfect. Love, Love, Love. On to the service - the peeps behind the counter were so nice - even after the woman infront of me spilled her huge drink all over their phone and counter / papers / pens... they were super nice. I think the owner or manager was there as well - he was constantly involved, cleaning, chatting with customers, etc. Awesome!! I used to come here all the time but haven't been here in such a long time. Guarantee you will be seeing me here more often. We have been going to Brasil for over ten years. Always enjoyed the environment, the pizza, and especially the desserts. Desserts and wine at Brasil was something to look forward to. We went tonight, ordered the Carrot cake and Bread pudding. I asked for the Creme brulee but was told that the menu has been changed due to a new chef and that the Creme brulee is no longer made. The carrot cake has to be hands down the absolute worst carrot cake I've ever had, and probably one of the worst cakes I've ever had. It's not even cake, it's seems to be a mix of sweet potatoe pie with gelatin, just disgusting. The bread pudding was so thin, dry, and flavorless, it was just bad. IDK what happened to Brasil but it's gone downhill. If you want a good dessert, go across the street to Common Bond. Sad to say but we probably won't be going back to Brasil for a while. read more

Been going here for years, and have seen it really improve... but the service and experience here is SO hit or miss, I really wanted to give it 2.5 stars, the median between my one star experiences and my 4 star ones! I mean, I once ordered a "salad sampler" here and got chips and dip. When I pointed out the error, the girl behind the counter told me the chips and dip WAS the salad sampler that day. I mean, come ON. I like this type of sidewalk cafe styled place, I agree with Rebekah that in a place like San Fran (or Montreal) this place is the norm. Here in Houston it's less common to find a cafe that's not in a strip mall, so it definitely gets points for that. I took my dad here for breakfast once, and our Huevos Rancheros were not very good at all. It seemed like somebody scrambled some eggs and dumped some canned tomatoes overtop and put some black beans on the side. That is the only food I've had. The dessert (ceeme brule), and the coffee was good though. I'm giving it 4 stars for the atmosphere the location the "style", and the coffee, just don't order the huevos rancheros! read more

To me, this is more of a lunch spot you can take your laptop out at, rather than a coffee shop with food. There are a lot of different seating arrangements too: you could bring a group of 6 people or find a table for 3. I had the regular Cafe Brasil burger, and it was fantastic. I generally like burgers, but this was love. The fries were also super hot, even though I ordered a bit after lunchtime. One star off for the music selection: I felt a little bit stuck in a time warp when I heard Skrillex's Scary monster and nice sprites and then a song from Drive's soundtrack. Also-the wifi apparently is not turned on if it's "peak business hours". I am here at 1 pm on a Friday on wifi, so I am guessing that's not within peak time... read more

I think I caught the tale end of the shitty-artsy vibe it once had. Many years ago, when I discovered cafe Brasil, I would spend all day sipping coffee, studying, and staring at interesting paintings. My consumer behavior would always piss the a-hole owner off so much so that he would come hound me asking if he could get me anything else. Well, apparently the owner must have gotten sick of that non-spendthrift type of crowd and decided to house only the most muted art, uninteresting yuppies and bad service. Many years ago, the food was better, the art was cooler and the layout of the place was cozy, but warm. Now, I feel out of my element, and I usually have to retreat to the back patio to take a breath. I'll admit it's not all bad. It is still a great place for a first date or to catch up with old friends. Some interesting items were added to the menu ,such as a Goat Cheese and Beat Sandwich. Along with these modifications, the mediterranean platter which used to have hummus, tabouli, and Baba, is a completely different dish. If you want to eat hummus make sure you have six dollars to waste. It comes in a cup that might be enough for two people. read more

Good food, consistently horrible service. I have only ever had one pleasant experience dealing with their insufferable waitstaff, who often behave (and these are all different people) as if they are doing you a favor by taking your order or acknowledging your existence. The food, however, is very nice. I like the Kobe burger and garlic fries. The pizzas and salads are good, too. For me, though, part of enjoying a meal is not feeling as if I am dealing with rude waitstaff just to eat. So, unless I can't avoid it, I will not be returning to this place. read more

Destined to be a Montrose classic. Every item on the regular menu is memorable. The mushroom pizza (add pepperoni please) is my favorite but tonight is Friday Grill Night so I'm going for steak. Oops! My mistake, never buy a steak at a pizza joint. That's not to say they don't know how to cook a steak - the steak was actually cooked to medium-rare perfection. So what's the problem? Merely expectation. Before ordering I asked the cheerful guy taking my order "What's the weight for the NY Strip and the Filet Mignon?" His reply "12oz for the strip and 8oz for the filet." (Expectation #1) "Great, I'll have the filet with risotto and asparagus." After what seemed to be an inordinate wait time my plate was delivered. Oops. Mashed potatoes not risotto. I immediately raised the starch issue with my server who argued with me that the filet always comes with mashed potatoes. "Everywhere but the menu board," I said. She said she would "look into it." Next I said, "One more thing, this should be an 8 oz portion." "That's what size they are." she said over her shoulder as she walked away. So much for failed Expectation #1. By now I'm into decision justification. I thought, "WTF it only cost 18 bucks. Did you really expect 1/2 pound of primo filet mignon for 18 bucks?" (Well actually I did because that's what the guy said it would be.) See above: "Oops! My mistake, never buy a steak at a pizza joint." While I wait for an official ruling on the risotto I cut into my diminutive filet. It appears to be perfectly grilled. Ah, a little slice of heaven... albeit unseasoned heaven. I wasn't expecting anything exotic, just a little salt and pepper. I was to be denied. Meanwhile, still pending a risotto ruling, I sampled the mashed potatoes. No salt! Don't get me wrong I'm no salt fiend - I'm careful to use it sparingly when I cook and almost never add more to a restaurant meal - but I certainly know when there is none or nearly-none. This was that. I scan the table for salt and pepper shakes - none in sight. My daughter is on her way to get some water so I asked her to bring them back with her. Presently the waitress comes back to say, "You're right. It should be risotto. I'll bring it as a side." "Thank you." I said feeling smugly vindicated while noticing my plate getting cold in the night air. Epilog: The risotto was delivered, also bereft of salt. By this time I had finished my 3-bite filet, the asparagus. (I know they have salt in the kitchen as the asparagus was nicely seasoned.) and my glass of wine. I went back to the counter for another round of drinks for the table and took the opportunity to complain to the cheerful guy who took my order. He shrugged and said, "I'm sorry. I'll mention it to the cooks," but what was written all over his face was, "Moron. Never order steak at a pizza joint." read more

I've been here twice with other people to work on laptops during the day and both times the manager was a jerk. He came over to our table to be pushy and rude about how we should order more food/drinks on the spot, even though we'd ordered breakfast AND we said we were going to order lunch later. So sad to be giving this review because I've always liked this place. A friend and I came in around 11:30am and left at 3:30pm due to one of the servers coming up to us and saying "this is a give an take situation it's how we keep the lights on" I was so taken aback because he had already come up to us earlier about us moving to another table and then essentially asked at the end if we were almost done. 1. The place isn't even packed it was at 50% capacity. 2. In the time we were here I ordered 2 breakfast tacos and 3 chai lattes and my friend a coffee, a breakfast plate, a chai latte and a pastry. We were not just sitting here with the same coffee we purchased at 11:30 we were consistently purchasing food or drinks. When I pay $10-$15 I'm expecting a bit more than a sandwich I can make myself plus chips. The atmosphere, especially the back patio, is great, but Empire Cafe and Paulie's are much better value for money and quality. Brasil's is worthy of my first review. I have been going here for the past 8 years and i have so many fond memories of the place. By far one of the chillest atmospheres to hang back with your friends and talk about life. The coffee is amazing. (Try the caffe mocha.) The pizza is the best. (Chicken verde my friends!) And you're going to be pretty hard pressed to find anything else on the menu (Salads and sandwiches) not to your liking. The beer and wine selection is also really good and reasonably priced. They even serve some good Belgium beers! This is a great spot to meet up with friends to eat or just drink. The only thing that might be a little different as opposed to other restaurants is that fact that you have to pay up front and take a number. How do I hate thee, let me count the ways... 1. The guy who picks up the plates, glasses, silverware from each tables and slams them into the dirty dishes holder thing. I'm a little sensitive to loud noises but this was absurd. It wasn't like a bar where it's always going to be loud. It'd be completely quiet and then there'd be a power slam that would literally make me jump. 2. We have a party of five. Three of us order pizzas, two order salads/hummus/whatever. The salads and hummus come within 3 minutes. Our pizza comes within 5. The next two pizzas don't come until 25 minutes later. Really? 3. The tofu in a salad we had was so salty - it was terrible. Good food, decent prices, OK atmosphere. I advise you to visit at odd times, unless you like being a parking barracuda. It can be almost impossible to find parking at peak times. If you want to come people watch, peak times can be best, especially if you're in a snarky mood. Lots of fodder for the ole snark mill in here. Anyway, the minimalist decor is OK, but I'd prefer something a little more comfy. I do like the food, most times. Some dishes I've had have been misses, though. Service is usually good, but I have had some instances, like the most recent visit, when they've screwed things up and not done much to apologize or make things better. Overall, I will not urge you to avoid Brasil, but I won't urge you to go there either. This place isn't bad, but it is overrated compared to other Montrose competitors. If you want an overcrowded place with some ambience, music, and slightly overpriced food and drink this will fit your needs. If they're still serving the Hibiscus iced tea be sure to get it and let me know if you can figure WHY they're still serving it. I've come to Brasil several times, and I'd say the food is either really satisfying or just ok. The hummus platter is great, mozzarella sandwich is delicious and fresh tasting, and you honestly can't go wrong with any of their homemade pizzas. The last time I came, I got the four cheese pizza and am slightly ashamed to admit that I ate all of it by myself (they're not huge - just meant for 1-2 people, I swear. And I was really really hungry at the time). I love pizzas with white sauce instead of red, and the crust was so soft and fresh that I couldn't stop myself, so I'd absolutely go back and order it again! Items to avoid would be the salads (always kind of bland, never the kind of salads I've felt are worth the price), the grilled cheese (I love gourmet style grilled cheese, but Brasil's I feel is way too heavy on the cheese, ironically enough. They put tomatoes on there, but the cheese is just heaped on, and I had to pull some of it off to feel like I had a better bread to cheese ratio), and the burger (can't vouch for this personally, but my friend got it once and thought it was pretty lackluster). The venue is awesome and part of the reason I love coming - it's pretty hipstery and eclectic feeling but still comfortable. The outdoor patio is absolutely gorgeous at night, and it's in a fun people-watching location off the corner of Westheimer across from Agora so you get plenty of interesting characters walking by. The inside is dimly lit but accented with lots of cool and kind of out there pieces of art so it's cozy but also casual enough for a quick lunch meet-up. They also have really good desserts and coffee, so if you want to go during the day to study (they have free wi-fi with purchase) or hang out, Brasil is actually a pretty prime spot. In my experience, the staff is somewhat standoffish but not unfriendly, and they're pretty knowledgeable about the food and drinks, so even if you just want advice on which coffee to pair with your homework, they'll help you out. Basically, I love Brasil as a staple restaurant. The food may not be out of this world, but it's a great spot for meeting up for a casual lunch or dinner and the prices are pretty reasonable for what you get. read more

I'm really dying to find a place like this out here in Oakland/Berkeley/San Francisco. You'd think that would be a no brainer. If anyone knows of a joint, shoot me a line. When I lived in Montrose, this was my absolute favorite place to read a book, have brunch, meet friends, set a date, study, people watch, etc. There is a little something for everyone, be a teetotaler, a vegan, a drunken meat-a-vore, what have you. The ambiance is eclectic without effort. The patio is fantastic. I loved doing Sunday brunch, getting the bagel sandwich with all the fixings and a hair-of-the-dog Guinness. I miss you Brasil. Came out here on a Saturday night looking for a reasonably priced sandwich/pizza place. I had heard mixed reviews for this place, and decided to give it a shot for myself. Parking is a hassle out in the old westheimer area, so needless to say this place is a frustrated parking situation during crowded times. The restaurant is very cozy but the tables are sprawled out in a messy mosh posh fashion with musical chairs being the choice of game. So just feel free to sling the dining area setting everywhere! Happy times! I'd give this place a solid 3 stars. Nothing extremely special, but nothing to say that it was terrible. I tried a couple dishes and came away thinking that it wasn't too bad. The spinach & feta pizza was cooked pretty well with the spinach having pretty good flavors. The duck salad was pretty good as well, a fairly good smokey flavor. Lastly, if you are a famr animal you may enjoy grazing on the chicken verde pizza. The thing is literally covered in grass (brasil and parsley), it's a bit overwhelming and makes for a meal that is overly seasoned with those flavors. Best dishes: Spinach & feat pizza, and duck salad. I would come here to eat again, but it wouldn't be at the top of my lists (but also not at the bottom either). read more

Brasil, in my eyes, is a gem among gems. They stand their ground where it counts: great location, awesome craft beer selection, and cool environment - but most importantly - incredible food. I was so thrilled to visit this place twice within a week. The first visit I was surprised to even find the place: it is nestled quietly in a busy corner on Westheimer in such a way that you have to know it's there to pay a visit. When I walked in I loved the simple design and aesthetic of the place but then I was immediately taken back by their selection of craft brews. All sorts of Texas brews (many I had never heard of) and all where delicious: they even had the much talked about Bishop's Barrell No. 4. Great beer experience! The next time I came back I decided to try one of their pizzas which I was told they were famous for. Having just recently fallen in love with the taste of figs I decided the Fig and Prosciutto Pizza was right for me. And boy was it! The pizza came to my table about 15 minutes later: crunchy crust and a nice gooey cheese formed the base for this delectable delight. Then I bit into a Fig and my world was made new: I believe these figs were soaked in Maple which gave this pizza an earthy sweetness. Along with the Prosciutto, Arugula, Olive Oil, Lemon and Parmesan toppings, I was immediately transported to heaven. The next few minutes were a blur of taste-bud enlightening bliss. And after I came down from that high I noticed that the entire pizza (along with my St. Arnold's Santo pairing) were completely and utterly destroyed. Food was good and coffee tasted ok but be ready to get harassed if you go there to get some work done. I ordered a breakfast dish and two iced coffees and I was still pressured every ten mins to either leave or buy something else if I wanted to keep using the WiFi to work. It was very distracting and could not get much work done. My coworkers and I ended up leaving when the WiFi mysteriously stopped working after the sixth time we were told to buy something or leave. This is a great place to come and relax to have lunch or meet people in the evening for great conversations. I've actually have been here twice within this week in the evening time. I normally get the Margherita pizza, which was what I got on Tuesday. Thursday, I tried the veggie burger -black bean burger which was great. You'll definitely need a fork to finish off the burger. Be prepared to park your car off on the neighborhood since there is no parking lot and curbside parking is rare to find unless you're lucky. I'm frequent at one of the coffeeshops across the street, but this is my goto when I want a good hearty meal. I had the turkey burger. It was pretty yummy,. The side salad had a bit too much dressing for my taste. Overall everything was a bit over sauced. The real issue was the person who I placed my order with. He was condescending & made me feel very uncomfortable. I wasn't aware that the side salad already had the dressing on it. When I asked for the dressing I'd like, he responded that they don't serve it here. No issue. When I asked what dressing they had & made a selection he responded with "Good. That's what was going to come on it anyway" very sarcastically & looked away. Wow? Overall, I personally can't find a reason to come back here. read more

Seemed like Brasil would be a decent place to sit and work for awhile since they have outlets conveniently located and WiFi. I met a co-worker there around 10:45 one morning and between the two of us we ordered a meal, three coffees and a baked good. Every 15 minutes or so a man would come up to us asking if we needed anything else. At first we thought he was just being polite until we had a third person join us. The man came up to our table and basically told us we needed to order or leave because we were "taking up table space and using their WiFi". About 10 minutes later the WiFi got disconnected and we eventually had to leave. I will never go back to this establishment. Extremely poor customer service. read more

This used to be one of my all time favorite hang out place right until I moved outside the loop and they had a face lift, sigh! I have brought so many friends here including dates, all were very pleased with the location, ambiance and the food. I love to hang out here during the weekend nights but only out on the patio where they used to be covered with greens and have my moccachino and some cakes especially the almond cake. I remembered the first time i came into this cafe, it made me feel like going into another European cafe with bricks, log beams and dim lighting. I instantly fell in love with it and spent a lot of good times and 1 sad moment there! But now, its all different. Its definitely more spacious and the patio at the back is quite nice especially during a movie night... however, front patio lost it charm. And the open space/warehouse concept in the inside just didnt give me that coziness anymore... I have been told about the pizza here but only tried once long time ago. I got to Brasil around 6:30. Parking was a pain...we had to parallel park a good distance away. But it's understandable because of the location. Besides, we all need the exercise. There's no table service...you get in line and order at the counter, which I don't mind. However, we did stand awkwardly at the counter for 5 minutes while the only person at the counter was on the phone. At least we had a fun collection of Santa mugs to stare at in the meantime. He did not seem happy about taking our order. I got falafel, pizza Margherita, and their house white wine. Both the falafel and the pizza were delicious. The yogurt sauce for the falafel was slightly sweet and yummy. It came with warm pita and hummus, which were also quite good. The pizza had warm, crispy, and salty-sweet crust, and a generous layer of mozzarella. The roasted mini tomatoes were a perfect touch. Very happy with the pizza. I'm actually not sure what type of white wine we were given, but it was sweet and crisp. Tasty, but $6.50 is a bit on the steep side for the house wine. Good times and good vibes at Brasil. The menu was inviting and the beer and wine list was great for a place like this. I have not been on a date in a while and ventured here the other night on a recommendation and it was a perfect setting. Intriguing people and suttle toons made it for a good place to relax and talk freely. I had a glass of the Grenache on their wine list and it was very satisfying. If one is a fan of the dairy I recommend the cheese plate which consisted of a brie paired with some sort of honey mustard jam, a cheddar with stilton in the middle, and a mild goat cheese. I'm always a sucker for the fromage plate. The outside patio looked cool with the movie screen and some sort of local string band started playing late on Tuesday night. This environment reminded me of my college days in Athens, GA. Part of the place looked to be under construction and the line to order piled up at times but that does not bother me. I'll definitely be back to enjoy the scenery , the small tree in sun room, and taste the menu...maybe even a happy hour. read more

Located in Houston's "hippest" neighborhood of Montrose, Brasil has a wonderful spread consisting of good coffee, a full breakfast, lunch and dinner menu, beer + wine (no liquor) and a variety of sweat treats. Coming from NYC, the exposed brick in the place is hardly cool, but the space is great. There's plenty of sitting and people watching. The prices are on the higher end, but their coffee is a great deal. Brasil also shares a back patio space with Domy books, and the marriage between the two establishments is quite savvy in my mind. Now here's where the three stars come in: service service service. First, you have to line up at a bar to order everything. You line up and have to quickly scan a menu, decide on a drink or else you'll hold it ALL up. This, frankly, is stupid. Second, the baristas, cashiers, servers are never smiling here. The only place in the world that can get away with that is New York City because, well, it's NYC. But even my favorite haunts have SOMEONE that doesn't look like they're hating life. And this isn't a general opinion made after one trip, peeps. This is coming from a Houston visitor who has been to Brasil half a dozen times in 3 weeks. Why? Because their sandwiches are soooo good. Brasil, that ciabatta and foccacia you're busting out is some of the best I've ever had. But when you send a server to my table, when my number is showing, and he snags my number without leaving my BLT on ciabatta and french fries, goes around the entire restaurant with my food and then I HAVE TO GO UP TO GET IT, it leaves me no choice but to think that you have no idea what you're doing on the front-end of things. I bet the kitchen staff is great, but your servers suck. Also, don't toast my bagel, burn it, and then bring it to me after it's already been COOLED! How the hell do I spread butter on a cold, toasted bagel, dudes? Explain this to me. Please. Notes: Brasil is trying to get Jazz nights going and I was here for that on a Sunday night (when the server took my number without leaving my food). Terrible experience. Customer service is a joke. Employees act like they are being put out to answer questions, take your order, refill your drink, etc. Manager is a joke. After 40 minutes of not receiving our food with all the tables around us (who came after us, including a party of 8) all having their food, I requested a refund. The manager didn't even ask, or say a single word to me about the matter. He just gave me the cash and walked back in the kitchen. It turned out we (3 of us) weren't the only ones, as we left a table near us told us they had been waiting for an hour at that point. I live 2 blocks away, and have only been there twice in 2 years because of the people that work there, this was my last time. read more
