Alain's most recent venture -Brasserie D is his best yet. Same great quality of Alain's Bistro and Alain's Petite Bistro just on a grand scale. The space is amazing featuring both indoor and outdoor dining with a huge bar area. Typical French brasserie fare but delivered in Alain's special way with great local ingredients. Always try his specials: last night we had the celery root soup served chilled was outstanding as well as the Jersey tomatoes with buratta. The servers are great, two sons are amongst the staff which you can tell are as passionate as their dad. There is a full bar as well as wine and beer. I urge you to try this place...a place to love. Great vibes here!

Just opened July 27, thought I'd try this new French brasserie, as I am a lover of authentic French food. Glad I had made a reservation as the place was jumping. Pretty decor with French paintings, an old fashioned tin ceiling, a long bar for many patrons, along with high top tables and alfresco dining as well. The entire frontage of the restaurant has accordion doors so it's completely open to the street, a nice touch, especially in today's world. My friend ordered the Asparagus Spinach Vichyssoise that was outstanding- very comparable to Sardi's. It was a very healthy sized serving. Then came the Steak Tartare & the Muscles Mariniere, without the cream as I'm dairy free. The Steak Tartare had a beautiful presentation with a quail egg on top. It came with frites and salad. It was good, but not great. It could have had more seasoning. It was quite bland. The Muscles Mariniere was fair at best. The problem is too frequently restaurants use pre-prepared garlic, instead of chopping it themselves. When they use preprepared, it has an aftertaste. It was also loaded with it- very overpowering & just not good. Usually this is served with a crusty baguette to dip in the broth, however the chef served frites with it instead. In this instance no loss as the last thing I wanted to do was have the broth. When presented it had tiny white pieces of something I could not identify, then realizing it was the garlic that was actually puréed and much too much of it. It gave the appearance of a lot of grated cheese on the food. I could not eat much of it. Great wine list. Enjoyed a nice Boudreaux. They serve brunch as well. Not sure I'd give it another try considering the garlic issue as I'm sure it's present in most dishes.

We had to come here because they have Steak Tartare!! It was lovely to sit outside with our dog and people watch. The food was good, French fries were still hot when they came to the table. The steak tartare was fresh and flavorful. Accommodating staff brought water to our dog, and petted her on the head. We will be back for more tartare.

An A plus restaurant. Found it by complete accident and ended up spending hours therr and enjoying truly splendid french cuisine. A true find. We will be back! The owner Alain is really a french master chef in our own back yard who could imagine that.

Where else can you sit at a sidewalk table with the chef, before the rush, people watching. If you're looking for authentic, regional French food, and also a great burger or omelette, in a perfect little river town, Brasserie D is the place. I've also previously shared I try to support #local #business ‍ especially #authentic, #familyowned #restaurants, introducing myself to owners and staff whenever possible. Why? Because restaurants appreciate the business, thank you for the good comments, and may go above and beyond to make your visit a satisfying one. That's the experience we always get at @brasserie_d_nyack, where #owner, #chef Alain, and son Christophe personally greet and serve their guests. That Alain is from #Alsace and his menu reflects a remarkable #French diversity, offering dishes hard to find anywhere else except #france is a deal closer for a #foodie like me. If you #swipe the last pic it's of a half finished #bloodymary - I wasn't fast enough with the camera :-). Of course we also enjoyed what I think should be considered their famous #frisee #salad with the perfect #poachedeggs, #bakedbrie , #moules, #steak and #frites, all perfectly prepared and enjoyed for #brunch on a sunny Sunday or Friday night dinner.

Although Poughkeepsie has a decent variety of excellent restaurant options, there aren't a lot of upscale places to select from. We opted to book reservations for Brasserie 292 for a Saturday night. When we arrived, we were nearing the end of the dinner rush. We were sat right away, unfortunately it wasn't all too romantic being sat in the middle of the restaurant but understandably the restaurant is on the smaller side. The waiter was attentive, and addressed any of our questions about the menu, even hunting down the bottle of pinot noir we ordered. We opted to start off our night by splitting a half-dozen oysters which came with their in-house hot sauce, and an order of pouple, which was cooked to perfection. For our entrees we selected the red wine braised lamb shank and the dry aged prime NY steak. Since sides for both entrees were not mentioned on the menu, we also ordered sides - wild mushrooms, brussels sprouts and crispy smoked peewee potatoes. Overall the food was excellent and I'm still dreaming about the mushrooms. If we lived locally, would we go back, maybe but overall we had a great experience. Since this was an upscale restaurant, I opted to not photograph our meals and enjoyed being present in the moment.

The lighting is dim, the ambiance is intimate, and it looks romantic. I had made reservations so we were seated immediately. It's funny to note that the place settings were placed next to each other instead of across from each other at a four person table. We usually prefer to face each other, but when it's Valentine's day why not be cute? We ordered a few drinks during our dinner, the Sugar Plum Fairy, Memere 75, Avion en papier. My favorite was definitely the Avion en papier which had a slightly sweet, slightly bitter, citrusy taste. They had a pre fixe menu for Valentine's Day which unfortunately did not have the steak tartare i was interested in trying. But for $88, you get 3 courses: an appetizer, entree, and dessert. For our appetizers, we got the TARTARE DE THON (tuna tartare) and COCKTAIL DE CREVETTES GEANTES (shirmp cocktail). Between the two, i preferred the tuna tartare. The shrimp cocktail was good, but the only thing really special about it was the massive size of the shrimp and the freshly grated horseradish in the cocktail sauce. For our entrees, we got the CASSOULET DE CANARD and FILET MIGNON. The extremely tender duck leg confit was served with pancetta, white beans, toulouse sausage, and foie gras breadcrumb. It was rich, savory, fatty, and filling. All great words to describe food. The duck leg confit reminded me a little bit of a smoked turkey leg with the red coloring and shreddable texture. The filet mignon was served with pomme purée, wild mushrooms, and a bordelaise sauce. The filet was cooked medium rare as requested, but a bit under salted. The pomme purée aka mashed potatoes tasted like it was 50% butter so it was obviously delicious. Dessert was good, but my least favorite part of the meal. We got the TAHITIAN VANILLA CRÈME BRÛLÉE and the VALRHONA CHOCOLAT POT AU CRÈME. Both were very sweet. The brûlée crust did not shatter well, but it otherwise had a nice creamy texture. The chocolate pot was covered in flaky feuilletine which gave a nice contrast to the creamy chocolate, but my wife found the brandied cherries overpowering. The cherries made me think of German chocolate cake. Service was excellent. Staff was quick to refill water and checked on us constantly. Pace of the meal was relaxed and I'd even say they were slow to bring us the check since we had been dining for over 2 hours. My wife wants me to bring her back for their bottomless brunch on a Sunday so I will eventually be back.

We were seated by the window and were given freshly baked bread. We ordered the French classics: mussels, escargot, duck leg confit, and steak and fries. The mussels came out first and were pretty average. I usually like sipping the wine broth it comes with or dipping fries/bread into the broth. The escargot had plenty of oil and seasoning. It was actually too salty even though my coworker requested less salt on everything. I enjoyed dipping the fresh bread into the oil. Lastly came the entrees. I was a bit disappointed in both of them. The hanger steak was cooked medium rare like I wanted but the texture was not great. I was hoping for a more tender cut and this was a bit tough and lean. The frites were cooked well and very crispy. The duck confit was very tender but I didn't think it was amazing. Overall I don't think I will be returning to this restaurant with so many other great options around. I might be biased as I am not too familiar with French cuisine but we already sampled most of the classics already.

Potatoes au gratin & Brussels. They were delicious. My one piece of advice; If you want to be an upscale American/steakhouse with art deco kind of vibes, jazz nights, etc., they NEED to learn how to make proper cocktails. I ordered a Manhattan. Don't assume bourbon. A traditional Manhattan is made with Rye. It's supposed to be spirit forward with the beautiful sweet vermouth to balance with 2 dashes ango. Express Orange and dress the peel, or not, doesn't matter. Most bartenders drown cocktails, this one included. And NEVER serve in a martini glass :) Nitpicky but only bc I loved everything else. They just need to learn how to make proper cocktails. The details matter! I'll be back for that Snake River Steak!!

This brings us to The James, managed by Joe Giannino under the fat-cat "Standard Hospitality Group," owned by Andrew Affa & Steve Squirtiro. It's hard owning a business and keeping it profitable but not when it's an almost algorithmic formula driven money extraction system so commonly found today. It's more difficult dining out in the world today when it feels like hospitality is vacating. Vining more about high-revenue than humanity. By very definition, I wouldn't call a good portion of the hospitality industry hospitality at all, and I certainly wouldn't say the James offers any. What I love about food is what it does for the soul, & what I've always loved about providing and caring for people is the sense of community; connection during good times and difficult ones alike; That's hospitality to me. Breaking bread is one of the most fundamental human gestures of generosity and true wealth. When you have it, you share it not squander it, not hoard it or treat it like it's something to take from others and line your pockets with. That's why this experience disappointed me so much, because I believe with the myriad of options, we must be far more selective and far more supportive of local and smaller family run establishments. Today, for a table they would still fill and never notice, I tried to cancel a reservation out of respect -- respect for the staff, for other guests, and for my damn self. Being charged a cancellation fee when a mom is sick on Mothers Day, is not hospitality, it is not empathy. It is greed disguised as brand experience self worth. I have supported the Arlo from this same restaurant group in the past and probably would have happily returned too, based on the menu alone, but coldhearted, rigid policies like this change how a place feels. There are many family-run restaurants that understand flexibility and empathy. That kind of environment matters to me, and this experience will forever make me decide to support those places instead. I've recently learned to name positive outcomes when something negative arises, so I believe this time, it's great that it only cost me fifty bucks to never give this group another dime. Typical corporate hospitality is more what the James can offer. These types of COMPANIES feed themselves, not the community.

We already agreed on splitting the following: - Cream Tea: which is a basket of scones (which we both took home two each and the accoutrements that go with said scones) and a pot of tea. - Burrata & Fried Eggplant Salad: the salad in our opinion could've used more dressing and the Burrata needed either more dressing or salt.
