Coincidence? I think not. :) Without a doubt, Bread Alone is the finest artisan bread maker in the Hudson Valley. The loaves are crusty, rustic boules, plaits and batons that are as beautiful to look at as they are to eat. There is something wonderfully alchemical about freshly baked bread, the combination of a few basic ingredients (water, flour, yeast, etc.) yields some of the most nourishing food that can come from an oven. Bread Alone doesn't stop there though, they also offer pastries, desserts, cookies, sandwiches, bagels and COFFEE! Their coffee is so good that I can't think of another place I would rather go in a 50 mile radius. I always make it a point to stop in when I am in NY to pick up coffee and pastries or to get the Bagel Works with Hudson Valley smoked salmon, caper cream cheese, tomato and onion. I am writing this in the heat of the moment, so maybe I will rethink it later - but seriously I am SO IRRITATED right now. Let me start by saying: This bakery is 3 blocks from my house and 1 block from my work. In the year I have lived here, I've been at least five times a week, and spent an estimated couple of thousand dollars. In addition, I have steered manymany folks toward this place, I take meetings here, I send tourists here... basically I have been a fan. But the past two times I have eaten in the cafe portion (not the front bakery, but the sit down restaurant) - the food has been actually inedible. Like seriously... DISGUSTING. I'm not a person that can send things back without feeling like a jerk, so I just didn't eat. :-( Note: the table table near me DID send their food back last time I went. I just didn't, but I would have. But OK - I thought, I just won't go to the restaurant part for a while, maybe they have a new chef - whatever. The bakery is still yummy. Then today, a nice rainy Sunday afternoon, I brought a group of visitors - we were a party of 10. we wanted tea and coffee and pastries. The restaurant section was closed, and there was noplace to sit in the bakery section. I said, "Hey, can we just sit in the restaurant section - we won't get in the way, we don't need table service, we don't need anything cooked, we'll bus our own table, we just want to be able to buy a bunch of stuff and sit and chat out of the storm." "No." NO? Seriously? "No." But we don't need help ... we will just *buy a bunch of stuff* -- then *sit, not bothering anyone* -- then *clean up afterwards*.... "No. Doesn't matter. It's policy." This place is always consistent. Fresh made to order sandwich's or pre made if you're in a hurry. The service is always friendly and professional. They do a really good job of moving the line along when busy. A clean, well managed operation with many great options from baked goods, espresso drinks, sandwiches etc. organic and eco friendly. A model company! I stopped in for lunch on my way to Catskill Animal Sanctuary. The food was delicious, but what stood out to me was the level of care that every employee took to provide the best possible customer experience. The staff were friendly, COVID-19 protocols seemed to be in place and enforced (frequent use of hand sanitizer by the staff, and wearing masks), and the countertops and floors were clean. I went at what I thought was an off time (11:30 am), and the place was already packed, both in the cafe section and the dining room. I chose to sit in the back, and was greeted by a very cheerful hostess. My server was even more friendly and attentive. I ordered coffee, which came right away in a big mug. It was decent, but maybe slightly sour. I ordered the breakfast tacos. The description made it sound better than it actually was, but it was still pretty good. When I've eaten at the cafe on previous visits, the service has been pretty good, but the food mixed. The egg sandwich is tasty and cheap, but the bahn mi overpriced and inauthentic. The meat tasted like a dry, weirdly flavored sausage. On food alone, I'd give 3 stars, but the service bumps it up to four. read more

Good News for all Bread Alone fans. The expansion is complete. By leasing a storefront in The Courtyard, Bread Alone was able to expand into a sit down Cafe in addition to the turn and burn Bakery. The one time (so far) that i have eaten in the Cafe was after I had a root canal. Talk about needing some comfort food and I got it in the form of two eggs four wheat toast halfs and a good cup of coffee. I stop in at the Bakery at least four times a week and am always impressed by the quality of the soups sandwiches and pastries. Loyalty is key with another coffee shop diagonally across the street. But I have my favourite and that is Bread Alone. read more

Not always easy to get worked up about a bread shop but this is a little different. In the back is a lovely cafe with an outside terrace. Brioche French Toast with Cinnamon butter and maple syrup, perfectly poached eggs and delicious cappuccino makes this a standout for anytime of day. Service perhaps a little on the slow side but it's worth it. Also they have a great selection of pies, biscuits and bread to buy. Mine is a 9" Rhubarb and Strawberry pie, made fresh that morning. Dan the owner seems to have abdicated. It used to be he was really concerned about quality. These days underproofed or over baked, sometimes both for the same loaf, is very common. The bakers send out everything no matter how burnt or flat a loaf might be. Went here for brunch the other day and what a lovely spot! If you head out back you can sit and eat in their restaurant. Had the salmon works on rye and it was overall very good! No, you wouldn't want to live by Bread Alone - particularly since their chocolate cookies are fantastic enough to make your head explode. Not too sweet, not too chewy (or cakey), just pure, kick-your-butt-good chocolate flavor. Serious addiction potential here. And yes, the bread is also excellent and reasonably priced. The sourdough round give you a zillion slices and costs about $3.50. Get there early for the best selection - otherwise you'll be alone without bread (sorry, that's was really poor but I couldn't resist...). The only drawback is that the place is pretty tiny - maybe half a dozen small tables and a few seats at the window. And while it's not an uncomfortable place to sit and eat, it's not exactly the kind of place where you'd want to plunk yourself down for a few hours with a good read, coffee, and food. It's unusual that we eat at the same restaurant twice within 1 vacation, but Bread Alone has that honor. My breakfast of homemade granola, organic yogurt and fresh fruit brought me back for dinner the next night. I thoroughly enjoyed the lobster gnocchi. We walked in here to use the bathroom after walking around town for awhile. I ordered hot apple cider, a canelle and two loaves of sliced semolina to take home. They were having a Sinterklaas event throughout town. We thought it was very festive and almost every shop had decorated with paper stars. Pricing is normal for a bakery. I really enjoyed this quaint restaurant! We are at the Rhinebeck but I know of a few other locations throughout the Hudson valley. The place had a great atmosphere and the food was inexpensive. I had the burger which was grass fed and topped with cheese, pickles, onions, tomato and lettuce. The only thing I would say was the portion size was on the small side. This place has ok food but it's not REALLY a bakery as the bread and bagels etc. are not made on site. It is frequently busy which shows its popularity, fwiw. The prices are ok. The coffee is fine. I almost don't want to get the word out too much, but Bread Alone Bakery is an outstanding spot for brunch in the Mid-Hudson Valley. I scoped this place out on a weekend trip with friends where we stayed the night in Saugerties. I knew I wanted to check out Rhinebeck on Sunday morning, and Yelpers pointed me in the direction of Bread Alone. I had assumed it would be a small to mid sized cafe, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that they had expanded into a larger restaurant space in the back that felt bright and airy with large, full length glass doors. I ordered a spinach, goat cheese, and caramelized onion omelet with a side of turkey sausage and a latte. I have to say, the latte was truly outstanding and 3x better than anything you can get at Starbucks at half the price. The omelet was exquisite - I am always happy to see one cooked to a beautiful fluffy texture with no visible browning on the surface, proving that perfect technique was used. The service was authentically friendly, as opposed to the fake friendly I always get in NYC, and the price of our meal was about 20% less per person for something comparable in Manhattan. Overall, Bread Alone Bakery is a real gem! read more
