Love this cute little place! Reminds me of a Panera, where you can buy breads, pastries or beverages to go, but also a sit down restaurant. We ate breakfast at the restaurant part. Small but cozy, the menu was creative but not overdone, and not too many options (which can sometimes be overwhelming).Both dishes we had were fantastic; my boyfriend's omelette was well crafted and tasty with pancetta spinach and cheese, and my Hudson Valley Breakfast was the classic 2 eggs CTO, home fries bacon and their fresh artisan multigrain toast. I actually subbed the bacon for turkey sausage patties. I'm kinda skeptical about turkey sausage because so many places do it badly, but these were on point. I also loved that the home fries were actually cut up potatoes, and not the crappy shredded kind. Best part of the meal was the bread. We commented to each other many times how good the toast was! Great place to go eat. We went to the restaurant side, though there is also a place where you can just grab breads and other pastry products with coffee and such. The restaurant side is very nice, with posters about bakers and breads from the US army. We got the Grass Fed Burger and it was decent. A nice little place in a decidedly upscale little town. Pretty basic-looking coffee shop/bakery w/a small dining room and patio in the back. A little put off because the dining room does not open when the front part does...had to wait a bit (to the opening bell) w/a party of 4. But, had a great French toast on thick bread w/the egg nicely soaked in. (Amusing that extra syrup costs $3...the good news is that you get enough w/a regular order.) Others had pastries (excellent) and more straight-up breakfast fare (all good). Good coffee! Really no major downside here but it is a bit pricey. Your quintessential brunch spot! The space is well-lit and roomy. If you're only stopping in for a coffee and/or pastry you can sit in the front while guests dining in sit in a room in the back. out of all the bread alone locations this one is my least favorite. I'm hoping that after reviewing it will remind me to pass next time I'm in Rhinebeck. Today was my worst experience yet. Ordered a large latte, received a small which was luke warm. I enjoy my coffee hot. Black forest cake taste like refrigeration and employee stood in the bathroom texting on her phone and afterwards took her time switching out garbage bags while I sat outside waiting to use the bathroom. 4 star food. 1 star management. Sadly, the negative portion of my visit weighs so heavily on my overall experience that the (good) food is almost an afterthought. Dropped in as a duo for a late lunch one recent Sunday. It isn't entirely clear upon entry what their system is for ordering and serving. Although the front dining area was over-full, the rear dining area was empty, dark and guarded by a hostess. I was able to grab two menus from her, headed back to the front and waited for a table to open up (just a few minutes, since we circled like vultures). After we had a chance to look over the nicely done menu, I got up to order at the counter since it didn't seem like table service was happening. The counter service I experienced was pleasant despite some of the reviews here, and it turns out that they do bring the food out to you. I had the special pumpkin pancakes with pecans and my companion had a burger served with a small mound of naked mixed greens. Although each dish had good flavor, I'd expect an extra little something for the price - perhaps some seasonal fruit with the pancakes and some home fries (or a more complex salad) with the burger. Both of our beverages were fine (chai latte and a special gingerbread latte served with biscotti - that's the kind of extra touch our dishes needed). I also ordered a bag full of baked goods to take home (2 small tarts, a scone and an almond cake). Despite the ordering/serving confusion and iffy value for the dollar, I had a good meal here and would likely return for another. However, the way the manager handled a serious problem compels me to knock off several stars. While I was at the counter ordering, a larger 70-something man sat at our table, immediately next to my companion on the banquette where I'd just been seated, engaged in unintelligible conversation and caused him to be visibly distraught. I sternly requested he vacate our table and he refused, claiming that "you don't even have food." I returned to the counter and requested that a manager step in to remove the customer. When the manager did emerge shortly thereafter, she simply said TO US, "move. now." gesturing to the adjacent table that happened to become available at that moment. According to the staff, the guy who harassed us is a regular customer and clearly outranks two tourists who just spent $60 on lunch and sweets - because, hey, they'll never be back. Apparently they have no problem giving this resident creep behavioral carte blanche and for that I must unfortunately rate accordingly. read more

i've eaten at the Bread Alone Bakery a few times so I was excited to join a few friends at their newly installed bistro for a birthday lunch. I ordered coffee and sandwich. Unfortunately when I got my lunch it wasn't what I had ordered. After the waitress dropped the food off she never came back so I had no choice but to eat what she gave me. The flavors in the wrap were disappointing and to be honest it was hard to finish. From now on I think I will stick to the bakery where I can order by pointing to what I want. read more

She refused to step down a few feet to assist a hearing impaired customer, even when asked three times by the customer, she refused insisting "no, you come here". Bread Alone had once been the gold standard for quality food, fair prices, good menu options and consistent service. Sadly that's no more. Something has changed in the past year and all of the aforementioned qualities have substantially slipped. Yes, it's still an interesting place to visit, with its lively cast of interesting characters, but for food it's a bust. The breads are still decent, nothing spectacular and certainly not worth the price, but at least those still seem to be produced with consistent quality. However, their menu items are duds. A former favorite, the Banh Mi, while perhaps once a little awkward to eat with its large clunky chunks of mean, is now a tasteless mess. They changed the sandwich from a sausage-like sandwich to a "pork shoulder" sandwich and with that change went the once fantastic flavor. The meat it dry, now has a strange texture to it and is lacking any real taste. The Pastrami Reuben, while tasty, is incredibly greasy. Their pre-made Hummus and Goat Cheese Sandwich (found in the refrigerator case) is so heavy on the hummus I found myself searching for the goat cheese. The Chick Pea Salad (also in the case) touts itself as being an exotic, curried vegan option. Never before have I tasted such bland Indian-inspired food. I found myself excited to see the addition of some very interesting and appealing-looking salads on their menu so I ordered smoked trout. When I got it home it looked huge and inviting but upon further inspection, I found the reason for its size had to due with the four slices of bread layered beneath the lettuce. When I pulled them out (they were at that point too soggy to eat) I realized how small the salad actually was. For $12 I expected a more substantial meal. I did eventually learn that buying the trout salad and garden salad from the case, yielded a better result. I paid about the same but got more food. The Kale, Grain and Seed Salad is tasty but, again, I have a hard time justifying the price. The Arugula & Romanesco Salad is utterly flavorless, which is sad as it's served with a lemon-mint-garlic vinaigrette that really should have saved the day. It didn't. Breakfast is no better. The Classic Egg Sandwich was once a gooey, cheesy, yummy way to start the day. Now it's way too cheesy and on a "Kaiser Roll" (in no way is it a kaiser roll) that is so dry you almost feel like there isn't enough cheese to lubricate it as it goes down. The coffee is really nothing to write home about (Samuel's across the street is far superior). The Sourdough French Bread is way too tough and doesn't actually feel like french toast at all. It tastes very much like just some bread coated in egg. Someone there also had the brilliant idea that they should start making their own bagels. They should never make their own bagels. Never. Dry and brick-like are words that come to mind. Any New Yorker can tell you that bagel making is an art and not everyone can do it. Bread Alone clearly does not understand that. The Oatmeal used to be fantastic but they swapped out some of the fruit with other less tasty options and now it's just blah. The sad thing is, there really aren't a lot of places to grab lunch and breakfast so I find myself continuing to go for lack of better options. I think they know they're really the only game in town and really stopped giving a crap about their food. Or at least that's what it feels like to me. To compound the problem, they are clearly focused on reeling in the NYC crowd who frequent the area on the weekends. Prices have gone up and portion size have gone down. So, not only am I paying more for substandard food, I'm now leaving hungry as well. read more

After checking out the artisan baked goods in the displays, I was very much looking forward to enjoying a nice cup of tea, a bowl of soup and some lovely pastries. Sat down and still waiting for the soup to come, and were told "We're closed. Make your way to the door." Told her we were still waiting for the soup. Two more employees rudely repeated the same refrain. It was not like they informed us that it was Take-Out only when we bought the soup. But even if they did - which the didn't - there is never any excuse to be rude and harsh to another human being. Sweet breads are not enough to make up for such bitter attitudes. The people here are soooooooo nice! We were there for Sunday brunch, on our way to Catskill Animal Sanctuary, and the counter staff (Hi Olivia!!!!!) helped me find vegan options on their menu. They had tons of good suggestions and were so well informed on substitutions (knowing which breads had honey and which didn't), strong coffee and they keep their alternative milks (soy and almond) at the counter (unlike some places where you have to beg for it). Their raspberry jam is house made and so delicious that we begged to buy some - it wasn't for sale, but they gave us some to take home and it's unbelievably good! The bread is amazing, the vegan cakes were amazing and the service is stellar! Definitely coming back! It would be amazing if they added more vegan options to their menu, because the area has a lot of demand for vegan food, and not nearly enough providers! read more

This is one of my absolute favorite restaurants! You can sit in the dining room for a lovely pot of tea or grab a dish at the counter to take with you or sit in the more casual seating. The brioche French toast is one of the best French toasts I've ever had. I also love the cauliflower and egg sandwich. Their menu changes with the seasons so I try not to get too attached (RIP mushroom toast!), but that also means there is always something new to try- (hello, honey lavender macaroons!!). I was visiting friends in Rhinebeck recently and had a couple of opportunities to sample some of the breakfast baked goods. I would say that by and large, nothing special. I had a chocolate croissant one day and an apple tart the next. The apple tart was better. The chocolate croissant was basically a pastry with a chocolate bar in the middle. The staff also could use some instruction on friendliness, but that cold be said for the majority of the shops on that strip. read more

They have very tasty coffee, and a very, very, VERY extensive selection of breads, hence the name Bread Alone. They also have some delicious looking desserts. I regard Bread Alone as a stand-alone bakery, quite un-matched in the upstate area. Fantastic assortments of fresh bread from their home location near Hunter/Windham, NY, made daily. The staff is efficient, quick and very courteous and drama free. Excellent selection of premium tea's available. The only thing I don't like is how the owner increased the price of iced coffee by a dollar, a large for 3.50, a price not even starbucks charges as they are known for being pricey. Bread Alone has been a wonderful addition to Rhinebeck. The only two things they could improve is the pricing and opening earlier (many Residents catch the Rhi-NYC amtrak train to NYC, opening earlier would allow some to get a quick cup of coffee on the way to the train.
