Simply put, Alex and Victoria make the best bread in town. I'm a spoiled brat, I grew up to a fresh loaf of bread made every day by my grandmother and mother. 20+ years of this, and now, that I'm away from home, I can still get that same taste and feeling from B&B. The bread is so fresh and soft, you could use it as a pillow. (I am not exaggerating.) However, I gave it a three-star rating because the lasagna wasn't disappointing, per se, it was just lacking sauce. It was delicious and I could taste every element, but there was no unifying element. It was sauceless--a little disappointing. But the garlic bread that came with the lasagne was PERFECT. One wrong turn and we found ourselves turning around in a parking lot which happened to be the location of a new bakery opening soon called Bread and Butter. Simply wanting to check out the space, Alex, owner and mastermind baker, invited us in for a brief tour. We left with a bag full of goodies and a heart full of admiration. Have you ever heard the expression, "The bread reflects the baker"? Probably not, because I just made it up, but it seems to be true (what's Walmart bread taste like? ... Walmart), based on personal bread research I've done in over a dozen bread boasting countries, and I've never been more convinced of it until I stumbled upon Alex at his new bakery, Bread and Butter. Alex makes the bread. He creates the recipes. And he sources the ingredients. "I just wanna feed people..." he admitted when I pushed him further about his business designs. Success follows quality, and quality follows passion. When you meet someone who is passionate about their craft, it is impossible not to acknowledge that passion, and furthermore it is impossible to separate the person from their product: Enzo Ferrari and his engines, Steve Jobs and Apple, Alex Whitman and his baked goods. You can hear the focus in their voice... in Alex's voice.... when he nonchalantly comments about finding the perfect wheat grain, finding the farmer, sourcing his flavors from the local community in order to bring his customers the most tasty and nutritious baked goods ever conceived, ever. His products are so thoughtful and inventive, yet perfectly simple, surprising your brain and enticing your tastebuds. The bread... Texture: Alex uses a slightly larger milled grain giving the bread a very authentic European feel. A crispy, crunchy crust on the outside and pillowy soft inside. Quality: If you've had better, please tell me where. Taste: The BLUE CHEESE and WALNUT bread (yeah, you read that right) was my favorite, boasting a well balanced subtle flavoring of its namesake. I finished the entire loaf during a ten minute chat. SO GOOD. The pastries... We enjoyed the incredibly unique Garam Marsala Snap (think Ginger Snap with a more complex layering of flavors and an intense crunch... my personal favorite), Chocolate Chip (soft yet chewy, melting chocolate chips, DIVINE), Pecan Sandy (perfectly sweet with an occasional crunch of pecan). All the pastries were bold yet simple and balanced. I have been a customer since before they had a store front. The bread, the treats, everything is just delicious. I don't get by there near as much as I'd like. They sell out of certain things pretty fast.... that's unfortunate. The gruyere scone is my jam.(please don't buy the last one-i might be on my way to get it. ) I'm thrilled they brought the cheesy grit bread back into rotation. Alex and Victoria are such a pleasure to talk to. They are super passionate. The store is always very clean. They feature local flowers, produce, oils, cheeses and meats. Today I grabbed a couple scones, not quite white loaf, a couple baguettes, and 2 cookies. OMG- pecan sandie.. where have you been all my life? They are open 7 days a week. They are in the old baskin and robbins on Dayton blvd. They accept credit cards. They have coffee -i don't love it but that's personal preference. There is not a restroom. They have sandwiches and a cool take home pizza kit. This isn't a place you'd stay to eat. They have happy hour specials on cookies too! Thumbs up from me! While I was impressed with the bread I purchased, I was bit dismayed by the poor customer service. This morning I called and placed an order for 2 loaves of bread and prepaid. I arrived at 9:46 to pick up my order. When I entered, the girl behind the counter was serving two women. Fine. She did NOT acknowledge me with a "Good Morning," or "I'll be right with you." She didn't even ask if I had a preorder. Nothing. I stood there showing my disgust with her rudeness. When the second woman asked for some tea, the girl walked over to get it and happened to be near what appeared to be a to-go bag. I finally broke in and asked if the bag by her was a preorder for Rose and she replied that it was. I finally got my package and left. She offered no apology and seemed clueless as to why I might be a little miffed. She could use a lesson or two in southern hospitality or good 'ole fashioned courtesy. read more

Just visited a while ago. Small place but perfect if you just want to relax out of home. Got a croissant, a espresso donut, a gram masala snap and a double chocolate cherry and a velo coffee. Everything was amazingly good to the point my very picky daughter loved loved loved them! The croissant was perfect. Im usually a picky peraon i like them plain but it tasted amazing! The Velo coffe was perfect as well, not overwhelmingly strong but very calming. Just how i like my coffee. Have to ask them for milk but waa ofdered off the spot which was really nice. Will be going back very soon and happy to have found a local bakery that is just puuuuurrrrfect read more

Very fresh and tasty pastries, breads and even some specialty items such a as homemade pies, cheeses and my favorite the spicy prosciutto spread. Every time I've stopped in the employees are welcoming and their bakery case is filled with a beautiful variety of baked goods. I like that they have a couple unique items in their case such as their empanadas, the cowboy empanadas does not disappoint! I visited Chattanooga over a long weekend, and this was by far my favorite food spot of all the places I went! Everything is delicious, but the thing I keep dreaming about are the garam masala cookies--they're like ginger cookies, but instead of ginger, they use the garam masala spice found in Indian cuisine. Unusual, sophisticated, memorable, delicious (and super-affordable, compared to what I would spend on something like that in NYC, if I could even find it, WHICH I CANNOT): what more do you want in a cookie?? Wish I had an outpost of this place to go to--it would definitely replace my local bakery spots (but shh, don't tell them!)--but instead, I just have to drool over their Instagram feed. We stopped by here to check it out, and purchased two loaves, a brownie, and a cowboy pocket pastry. The cowboy pastry was delicious, and perfectly cooked. The brownie was amazing, and I wish we had purchased more than one! We tried a sample of the off white loaf, so we purchased one of it and a Bleu cheese and walnut leftover loaf from yesterday. Very disappointed in the baguettes. I've spent considerable time in France and French West Africa and they obviously make proper baguettes. Golden crispy crust with a glaze and pure white fluffy inside - that is a proper baguette. These were tough and not that tasty. read more

I was so excited to try Bread and Butter that I pestered my boyfriend to go there 15 minutes before it opened. We waited in the car and got behind this loud mouth couple when we went in, they bought almost everything. So I was pumped when they did not buy all of the Ham and Cheese croissants! We got 2 of those and had coffee while we waited for a fresh baked bacon baguette! The bakery is small, clean and modern. You don't really have much room to sit and eat, but that might change as they expand. Which I hope they do, it is a fun, tasty place that sells not only bread but also locally sourced foods. Our baguette came out and smelled heavenly. At home we sliced into it, I'm pretty sure it is sourdough. I'm personally not a sourdough fan, but the bacon was tasty and the bake was great; crunchy outside and soft doughy inside. My boyfriend loved it! I will be back because the croissant was amazing! Great bread and pastries. Bought the pizza kit last week and turned out really tasty. The marinara is very good. My only complaint is that I know it may be difficult to have things available first thing in the morning but for those of us who have to get to work by 7:30, it would be really nice if those ham and cheese croissant and the regular croissants were available early. Went in this morning and was told they wouldn't even be ready till around 9am. Nice for people that don't work, not so much for me. they still have lots of other choices, I am just not a fan of beans in my breakfast food :) read more

Well, I absolutely love visiting bakeries whenever and wherever I can--when we travel my husband knows we must include time to find a good, hopefully artisan, bakery. So, I was delighted to stumble upon Bread and Butter, this new bakery in Chattanooga, in Red Bank of all places (I say that because until 3 years we lived in fairly close proximity to this Dayton Blvd. location; now we are a good 25 minutes away). Bread and Butter reminds me of an artisan bakery in North Chattanooga maybe 15 years ago called Great Harvest that was hugely popular until it changed locations and subsequently closed. Like the old Great Harvest, Bread and Butter offers whole grain, robust breads (Baltic Black, Olive and Herb, Pecan Cranberry) muffins, sweet and savory pastries (cinnamon rolls, Spicy Cream Cheese pocket) as well as a few rotating scrumptious, not overly sweet cookie choices (Expresso Shortbread, Chocolate Chip and Walnut, Oatmeal Golden Raisin). They even have Cookie Happy Hour Thursdays 3-7 when you can raid the cookie jars for $1 a pop! Ummmm! So glad to welcome Bread and Butter to the Chattanooga foodie scene! read more
