While staying around the corner at the Westin, my boyfriend and I stopped in twice for breakfast over the New Year weekend, as recommended by our concierge. They offer a weekend breakfast/brunch that was $15 that offered a solid breakfast and coffee, along with a basket of bread/pastry and juice. Not bad for the area. I got the croissant sandwich which was meh, but the second time around got the nutella pancakes/crepes and they were DELICIOUS! I was literally licking the plate! My b/f got the spinach omelet, and he said it was excellent. The service was okay, as it did take a second to get seated, and get coffee, but its off the beaten path which I liked, and we were in and out quickly. The prices were reasonable, and the pastry selection was very good. They also had a fantastic potato and chive latke that I en-haled. All in all good stop for a quick breakfast! read more

I'm a total sucker for good names and marketing. When my friend asked if I wanted to have lunch at a place called Bread and Chocolate, I didn't even let her give me any other options because I was sold just by the thought of those two things. It's a small café and bakery located in the Old Dupont Circle area, close to both the Dupont Circle and Foggy Bottom metro stops. Inside, there are these gorgeous murals of Italian villas and flowers all over the walls. They serve all three meals, and it looked like they were still serving brunch when I went in at 12:30pm. Best things: - The bread...duh. Soft on the inside, crunchy on the outside. They served Italian and some sort of grainy loaf with lunch. - The pear, bleu cheese and candied walnut salad was ahhhhmazing! The vinaigrette they serve it with (I think champagne?) was so good that I wanted to lick it off the plate. Just ok things: - The Maryland Crab Soup - eh, it was good, but I wanted more crab. A little greasy too. - The service was slow. If you're in a time crunch for lunch, you may have a problem getting your check and credit card rung through. Just go to the counter instead of waiting for your server. Sadly, I didn't try anything that had chocolate in it, but the selection of cakes and pastries looked delicious! I say that the only reason why this overpriced place with waiters whose IQ probably only adds up to 100 per shift is still in business is because it is the only bakery in the area, or because people just love bread. It is also pleasant and well laid out, so kudos to the decorator. The weakest link is the menu, which is flat and indifferent, with the exception of some of the salads, including the quinoa. The pastries are not that good for the price and the fact that the place advertises itself as a sort of French bakery. The white chocolate mousse deserves a good word, but that is all. The service....ahhh. Sometimes the servers just stare at you, wondering why you are there, it seems. You sort of have to summon them and let them know you are a customer; they might not get it otherwise. That is, if they see you, because they may be too busy chatting away or daydreaming. There were plenty of places to sit inside and out so I wouldn't worry too much about wondering if there's space for your party. It seems to serve mostly those who work in the area or local tourists who are staying in the hotels nearby (like myself). Anyone who orders the muesli ("our claim to fame!") must have a will of iron, because the other breakfast/brunch options are so indulgent. The salmon benedict was not made with the highest quality salmon, but who cares when you've got perfectly poached eggs dripping all over it? And when you get a huge basket of pastries on the side? And when the Lavazza coffee is so good and so plentiful? It's not the fanciest of interiors, but the outdoor seating helps keep the crowding under control. I like that there's a counter for solo diners. Prices are very reasonable, considering the generous portions. Our sweet waitress insisted on boxing up the extra pastries for us. In fact, she was the closest thing to Southern hospitality we experienced in DC. B&C is not brilliant, but for a better-than-average breakfast, it's a keeper. read more

I should've listened to previous reviews. This place sucks overall. Service- it was at least 10-15 mins after I sat down outside before someone greeted me and even brought me a menu. Another 10 before someone thought to ask for my drink. My friend shows up and we wait another 10 before someone wonders if "has anyone taken your order?" Clearly not if we still are holding menus right? They seem very disorganized. The wait staff are tripping over each other. They brought me the wrong food and didn't apologize, spilled my coffee when setting it down (she apologized and said she would clean it up but didn't do that until several minutes later and quite messily, they plopped down the cold food and checked on us once and said "everything taste fantastic right?". Pretty presumptuous. Food- awful. It came out cold. Both the berry French toast and the plain one which they brought me out initially. The berry topping was bitter and flavorless. So was the French toast. The side of turkey sausage was cold and rubbery. It looked and tasted microwaved. Between my parents living a few blocks away and the fact that I go to church just down the street, I eat Sunday brunch here at least twice a month. The food here is good, not the best but good and I like that they offer things that aren't just eggs with a side of corned beef hash. The omelets are very good here. I like the Mediterranean one especially. Served with fresh fruit and a potato pancake. Another standard for me is the salmon Benedict. Take eggs Benedict, remove ham, add smoked salmon. The eggs are usually poached perfectly but sometimes are a little over done. The hollandaise sauce could be better but I'm not a big fan of hollandaise anyway so I'm fine with that. What is killing this place is the service. They have a ton of staff but it seems like no one is doing anything, despite how busy they look. They are slow, mix-up orders and generally are not a friendly bunch. The guy that seems to be the manager is running around trying to pick up the slack but he can't do it himself. If they got some trained waitstaff this place might earn itself another star, but for now, it stays at 3. read more

When I used to work a couple of blocks away I used to have a Thursday ritual in the fall/winter. I would get a grilled cheese sandwich from the deli nearby (I always called it the Ally Deli - I think it's Jefferson Square) and then walk to B&C for a great cup of tomato soup. The name of this place got me all psyched, but the Yelp reviews warned me not to expect too much, so it all evened out pretty well. It was located within a couple blocks of my hotel, so we set out on a Monday around 11am for brunch. Turns out this is when to go. There wasn't any wait or bad service. My three friends got various omelettes. I'm not an eggs fan, and it turns out there aren't a lot of eggless options for vegetarians (I'm weird, I know.) Their omelettes came with some delicious roasted rosemary potatoes. They tasted like the fancy version of homefries. They also ate brioche as an appetizer. I ended up getting a bagel with cream cheese, and the cheese plate. We all shared the cheese plate and it included some delicious chevre and cheddar, as well as swiss and brie. It was kind of strange that they didn't bring any crackers or anything with it, but we made due with the brioche and bagel. The dessert/bakery case looked phenomenol. When I first walked in, it made me suck in my breath all impressed-like. But after all the cheese and bread, I didn't have any room left for chocolate. Overall kind of a let down. I came in with some coworkers for breakfast and had high hopes after seeing the website. The interior was uninspiring, our waitress while inoffensive provided mediocre service at best, and the men's bathroom was on the gross side (broken toliet, overflowing garbage, dirty sink). I had the western omelet which came with ham, red pepper, tomato, onions, served with some fruit. It was okay, a touch greasy , rubbery eggs, under seasoned. The coffee was nothing special. My husband and I discovered Bread & Chocolate while on a walk to Georgetown. I wanted something lighter like oatmeal and coffee. He wanted an omelette yet we were both up for some delicious pastries should there be some available and we found all of it here. At 11:00 on a Sunday Bread & Chocolate was not overwhelmingly busy. We even got our choice of seating outside. The staff is very friendly and the price for the quality and amount of food you receive is quite reasonable. I had oatmeal with strawberries (only one) and bananas; it was very creamy and sweet. My husband chose the Brunch special for $16: spinach, egg, and goat cheese omelette which came with juice + coffee and a basket of pastries. The only negative was that I had to request a refill on coffee twice and they were pretty slow to bring our check. Today I had to run an errand for work and then grab lunch right after. The errand took me to 23rd and M and against my better judgment I tried Bread and Chocolate. I stared at the menu forever wondering if they could pull it off, thinking it was unlikely, but alas, I gave it a try. Not a good idea. The food was okay. Nothing to write home (or even tell my coworkers) about. I had some sort of panini. The plate didn't live up to the description. The outdoor seating was nice though and that might have warranted it three starts on that alone, but this must be the preferred route to GWU Hospital. Within the hour I was there there were 4 emergency vehicles passed by. So annoying. I wouldn't recommend eating here unless it's next to your office. Decent place to grab coffee/hot chocolate and some pastries. I can't really comment on any of the meal stuff, since we were just there for an afternoon coffee break. Everyone seemed to like the coffee, and I thought the hot chocolate was pretty decent (much better than Starsucks), though for some reason, I had envisioned a true European-style hot chocolate complete with melted chocolate stick. My expectations were probably due to the name Bread and CHOCOLATE, and that they proudly proclaim themselves to be a European style bakery/café. Come to think of it, I really didn't see anything that would support the inclusion of the word "chocolate" in their name - they did have tons of awesome-looking pastries, but none seemed to demonstrate a specialty in chocolate. We did have a cinnamon roll, which was really good. The atmosphere was very nice, too - and if it had been a bit warmer, we could've enjoyed sitting outside. I came here for breakfast on a Saturday. While there were a few groups it wasn't 'busy' given the number of people working. I expected the service to be better than it was. I asked for decaf coffee and juice that came with the brunch option. While my husband got his coffee quickly I waited about 10 minutes before asking another waitress for mine. My waitress brought it over, but it was only about a minute before the food came out. The brunch option was $16. I got the big breakfast that included eggs, potatoes, bacon, sausage and a pastry basket. The food was okay, but the pastries were disappointing. I expect a place called bread and chocolate to have fresh, homemade pastries, but they all seemed store bought. The waitress never came by to check on us after we received the food either. I must say that the owner uses Yelp to his benefit, offering vouchers for poor reviews. And certainly, the meal I had today at the M st. location of Bread & Chocolate was much improved from the last. I had the chicken pot pie which was very delicious, I only wish there was more of it! I had a cappucino this trip (no more Americanos for me) and it was very good. Came in a massive mug with lots of foam and cinnamon. My dining companion had the tuna melt and salad and also enjoyed her meal very much. The staff was pretty cold, but it didn't detract from our meal. I would however suggest that the waitstaff be a little more attentive. It wasn't too crowded during my meal and yet our water glasses were never refilled. It was a much improved outing to Bread & Chocolate and I would recommend this place to people in the mood for a quick and easy lunch in the Dupont/Georgetown area. My husband and I were looking for a quick bite while running errands, and we came across Bread and Chocolate. Surprisingly (and pleasantly), they were serving their brunch menu even though it was 4pm on a Sunday. The seating area is actually a lot bigger than it appears upon first entering (i.e. booths towards the back), but we opted for a table near the window. We ordered a caprese salad and a spinach/chevre omelette. Both were solid, although portion sizes were way bigger than I expected. Between the two of us, we didn't even end up finishing either dish, although I wish I had the stomach space to do so (especially the omelette! It was delicious!). Gosh, it seems other Yelpers hate this place! Bread and Chocolate is basically like Cosi or Panera, except servers come and wait on you at your table. The prices aren't much higher than Cosi, but the place is way cleaner and just a nicer atmosphere. I think overall B and C is decent. I've been here a few times just for hot chocolate, which they do well. The other day I finally ate lunch here. I had the curried chicken wrap and I would order it again. My friend wanted to try this place on a recent trip to DC. I tagged along without any real expectations. The food was okay, but overpriced. I got the spinach and goat cheese omlette, which would have been better if it was more evenly balanced. Half of the omlette was just a thick chunk of eggs. The spinach and goat cheese was in the other half, and was too much for the amount of egg wrapped around it. The potato latke that came with my omlette was much smaller than I expected. I appreciate the fact that you can sit and have a leisurely lunch gabbing without being pestered by the wait staff. But on days when you need to get going and just want your check, do not come here. I have had the salmon salad, the goat cheese omelette (very very cheesy), a cup of lobster bisque, and several of the coffees/hot chocolate, and all were tasty. DEAL ALERT!! Every day after 4pm, all of the mini pastries and tarts are half off (roughly $2 each)!! This is a great steal. For craft night on Sunday I picked up a blackberry tart, a raspberry tart, and a chocolate cheesecake -- the blackberry and chocolate were both good, nothing spectacular and no patisserie in Provence would even put its name on it, but for $2, they were lovely and very pretty. So I had breakfast here on a Monday, and it was pretty average. I had the apple croissant because it looked good in the showcase. It was dry and not at all flaky/buttery. My best estimate is that is was made on Saturday so it was quite stale. If they had a "day old baked goods" clearance section that's where it would have belonged. Unfortunately, management did not have the foresight to do that so instead they sold it to the unsuspecting customer at full-price. If a place has "Bread" in their name, I would think that they make things fresh..but that was not the case with this baked good. The service was sort of average, as indicated in the other reviews. I also ordered a non-fat cappuccino. They brought a large one..no one told me what sizes they come in. It was actually quite good. (To the management....maybe change your name to Coffee and chocolate, as the coffee products seem to be the thing here - though I'm not sure how good the chocolate is as I haven't tried it). It was priced fairly. So overall, bad croissant on Monday morning with a fairly priced, tasty cappuccino. Would I go back? I've eaten at this place on more 5 (if not more) separate occasions and each time it was a treat. Their baked goods are fantastic and the service leaves nothing to be desired. Every dish I've had here deserves some level of praise. Try to the ham croissant (Or is it ham and cheese) if you need something quick and easy to go or something for later.
