I recently discovered this Chinese bakery while looking for red bean cakes. I grew up eating this in my family but we know it as black bean cake. Over the years I couldn't find it freshly baked in the Chinese food stores here in Maryland, so I got used to buying it in Toronto, Canada when I visited or my sister would bring me some that was freshly baked. Now I finally found this little treasure right here in Rockville. Not only did they have that but they have the Portuguese egg tarts and pineapple custard buns that my grandson loves. I come to this bakery often. The wrapper on the bread claims healthy, delicious. I am not going to question the delicious part. But healthy? In a way, yes. Bread Corner uses butter instead of lard and its bread and pastries are less greasy and less sweet. If I made a choice to consume bread, I am not going to worry about carbs, calories or whatever. It is a small store with only two small tables if you want to sit down to eat the food. The bakery has earned the fourth star for greeting customers with a smile and great service. This is a nice small bakery with a good assortment of asian baked goods. Its clean and well kept. My opinion is Japong and Asian Bakery Cafe are a little better. It is not necessarily the quality, but the ratio of filling to bread is more suited for me. I personally like a little more bread and chewiness in each bite, and I think Bread Corner has a little less bread (or more airy / less thick bread) and more filling. That's not to say it is bad. It is just not my preferred ratio. I would recommend folks give this place a try, as well as the other bakeries and make their own judgement. You may have the opposite opinion! read more

My favorite place to get bread since I was younger. Today, I got two pineapple buns, fresh out of the oven! I went pretty early so I waited about fifteen minutes for them. It was so warm and heavenly. I didn't know they had roasted pork buns, so I bought one to try! It's pretty good! This place is sorta tucked in behind a local grocery store and Popeyes. Yes, it's awkwardly positioned as you can barely see this place from the highway. However, it's right next to the hotpot restaurant. I highly recommend trying any of their bakery items. Big fan of anything with fried pork. Also, they also serve items such as cakes, mango mousse cake. They also have beverages here such as soy milk (cold and hot) and milk tea. Definitely try their coffee black tea. Good combination. The staff here are very friendly and their prices are reasonable. Definitely give this place a try. I would not recommend this place at all. I recently bought a birthday cake from here which is not cheap( $26 for a tiny 6' cake). It turned out to be a really bad purchase. The cake was very thin and almost empty inside, and was filled with the cheap jelly stuff that you can buy a whole box for like $2. I have never seen a cake like this from anywhere since usually you would get fruit in the cake. I guess this is a good way for them to cut cost and make more money but I would say this is very nearsighted because eventually you will lose customers by doing this. The bread corner is a fantastic bakery. They have everything from bread to cheesecake and everything is delicious, good pastries and soft bread. They even do wedding cakes. One thing to note is you gotta try to get here early because it gets pretty packed with lines, but the line moves pretty fast and everyone is very very nice and helpful. Customer service is always great and the prices are very reasonable as well. I started out with a pastry tart and it was delicious. I can't wait to go back to try something else. The Portuguese egg tarts were WARM, flaky, and awesome! These are the star of the show. I tried the egg tarts as well as the coconut egg tarts. The coconut one was also warm and had a unique flavor, but was a little too sweet and coconutty for me. The Portuguese egg tarts have just the right amount of sweetness without overpowering the flavor. I also had the hot dog bun- scallions were a nice touch- the actual hot dog was a little shriveled and stale but it was not bad. The ham and cheese bread was alright, although the cheese was more like cheese whiz or some fake yellow stuff. And I also tried the vanilla buttercream coconut bun which was not bad but I'm personally more of a fan of the regular buttercream bun without the coconut on top (just a distraction to the buttercream IMHO). Everyone here is all smiles. They are so sweet and welcoming. When you enter, look to your left. Pick up a tray and use the tongs to grab your baked goods. Reliable Asian bakery in a convenient location! I've tried their light cheesecake, a bunch of their packaged pastries, Texas toast, and their mini moon cakes which they had available for mid autumn festival and probably New Years as well. The light cheesecake is very airy as to be expected from Asian style cheesecake, but I feel like the flavor is a little mild for it to be called a cheesecake. The texture is tighter and the flavor less strong than a fluffy cheesecake from Paris Baguette for example. Their packaged pastries on the whole are good but there are some that are better than others. All their melon/pineapple breads are nice but the taro & red bean fillings they use are kind of weird. The red bean filling especially is kind of muted and grey in color... wish they just used straight up red bean paste instead of whatever they mix it up with. The rou song breads are okay too and I'm a fan of their Texas/danish bread. Mini moon cakes come in a large variety of flavors including lotus, red bean, pineapple etc. They were on sale for 50% off the week after mid autumn festival ;) read more

This is by far, the BEST Chinese bakery in this area. It is always crowded during lunch time. My favorites: Hot Dog Bun, Coconut Shredded Bun, and the Portuguese Style Egg Tart. Also, their Milk Teas are made fresh and shaken over ice, not pre-made like other Boba places. The staff is very friendly and willing to answer your questions about any of their products. [Edit: This is the only bakery that I will ever order a cake from. It seems like grocery bought cakes are too thick, creamy, and sweet. The taste of Bread Corner's cakes are fluffy with a slightly sweet whipped topping - and it's specially made with fresh fruit inside!] The only downfalls are: If you get there too early in the morning, some of the breads you want might not be done yet, so you have to wait 15-30 min. or come back another time. Bread bakery so far is my favorite bakery in the area. I stop by on the way to my morning class about once a week and I'm always greeted with a smile. I go in around 8 am which is when they've finished baking and started putting the bread on display. The workers there always help me out if I ever have any questions, and they always tell me if they have fresh buns still on the rack that haven't been placed on display yet. Although some say the bread there is expensive, I find that one bun that is $2-3 is big enough to fill me for breakfast. There are only 2 tables there so it's not really a sit and eat place, however I don't mind it too much. Now, I'm not a good expert but I know that I enjoy a freshly made bun in the morning. Pineapple taro filled bun: Good. I learned I don't have a taste for taro, but I still found the pineapple bun delicious. Almond half moon cake: quite spongy, almost like a foam consistent. Not my personal favorite but a friend of mine happily ate the rest. A small cake cut in half and pasted together by cream, with almonds on top. Chocolate bun- basically a croissant like bread filled with dark chocolate. I loved it. Mango cake- delicious. Bought it for a friend that loves mango. The cake was baked fresh that morning, and they were willing to bake another if I wanted one with changes to it that night. Oops I forgot to review this place even though I've been coming here for years! I love Bread Corner and this place has always been my go to for pastries whenever in the Rockville area. Every time I drop by, I see rows of freshly baked pastries being cooled behind the counter and it makes the whole cafe smell good. The service is also attentive and nice. This adorable, tiny, clean little pastry shop was the perfect surprise find! It is tucked away behind the popeyes in a small shopping center and can easily be missed. Look for the blue signs! They have 3 different types of egg tarts and tons of other pastries to choose from. I loved their original flavored egg tart and flat almond cookies. The staff were so sweet and helpful with any questions we had. Since it was our first time, she even gave us a free soy milk either hot or cold. The staff are always kind and pro-tip: overnight bread is left on the side next to the counter with a black checkmark across it. You can get breads at a discount that honestly don't taste much different from a day-of bread. I usually stock up once every or every other week with breads and they last a long time without spoiling (would recommend a fridge if you're keeping them longer than 2-3d out). Oh the variety of textures inside this entertaining filled puff. Friends have raved about this place for years. I think it's overpriced. I went today after moving to the area because my mom loves the almond thins (which is almost $5 for a bag of 3-4 pieces, each the diameter of a pomelo). I couldn't compel myself to shell out the money for anything else... except the steamed buns seemed reasonably priced. I got a taro one ($1.15) and I was happy when I bit into it because it was obviously actual taro, and not just canned or flavored fake filling. However, there was such a tiny amount of taro that I can't give this review 4 stars. The main reason why I'm writing this review is because I'm directionally challenged and had a difficult time finding this place. It took me 3 trips. My advice is to turn into the Giant shopping center, then look for the Popeye's on the right, turn left, and then the Bread Corner is right next to it (on the side facing east, towards the Town Center Apartments). Absolutely what the doctor called for in a Asian bakery. A Chinese friend of mine turned me on to custard and pineapple buns many years ago and I have chased them in every city I've lived in since that time, and I've had a lot of custard and pineapple buns since that time. Tucked in the same shopping center as a Popeye's, and hiding in an unassuming storefront, Bread Corner is a real treat. It is clear they are baking on-site, and the goods are moving onto the shelf as you are shopping. They carry an excellent selection, ranging from pineapple and custard buns, egg tarts, and various other selections. I had a pineapple bun, a custard bun, a "honey cell" cake, and an egg tart. The pineapple and custard buns were exactly what I had hoped for. No complaints, just perfection. I was a little amused by the "healthy" sticker on the buns, however. The honey cell cake was a little weird, but had a cool texture that was halfway between cake and a gummy bear. I liked it. The egg tart wasn't quite what I had hoped for, but it had sat in the cold car for several hours by the time I ate it, so I can't really judge it adequately. I'm totally satisfied with my experience.
