I've officially accepted my fate--I will be stopping here every single time I pass by. This bakery has me in a full sugar-induced loyalty contract. The chocolate babka is hands down the best I've had. No debate. I even had a full discussion with my boss (a true babka aficionado), and we both agreed this is the spot. Rich, perfectly layered, with that deep chocolate swirl that feels borderline illegal. This time I also picked up banana chocolate chip bread, a baguette, chocolate rugelach, and matchalach--and wow. The rugelach deserves its own spotlight. My boyfriend took one bite, froze like he'd seen a vision, then silently got up, left his phone behind, and came back with an entire bag to take home. That alone should tell you everything. Everything here tastes fresh, indulgent, and made with care. The service was great, the ambiance is very relaxing. Honestly, the only downside is that it's not closer to my apartment... but maybe that's for the best, because my fitness routine would not survive this level of temptation. If you love baked goods, this place is non-negotiable.

My friend and I stopped here on a Thursday morning around 8 a.m. before work and it was such a great vibe. So many people were there just catching up over a cup of coffee or grabbing breakfast before starting their day. We got iced caramel lattes and a tea, and everything was great. I also got their scrambled egg breakfast sandwich and it was amazing. The whole place felt really cozy. Overall I really love this spot and can't wait to come back again soon.

I always come here to pick up a chocolate babka when I am nearby in the city. Today I went to go pick one up and saw that they have a new one, a red bean one! Because of this, I had to get both especially since they had a 2 for $32 and they let me mix and match! The chocolate one is always a staple but the red bean one was soo good too. The red bean flavor is super strong and my only slight complaint is that it is a little too sweet. But this is not a big deal because I feel like it will go so well with tea. The staff here is always polite so I really do like going to this bakery, definitely will try one of their cakes one day when I do not get the babkas.

Love this place! My wife and I have frequented this place on several occasions before and after church, and let me just say they never disappoint! Their baked goods are always fresh, the coffee is delicious, there's plenty of space to enjoy your treats with loved ones, and the service is friendly and quick!

The chocolate babka was insanely good. Criminally good. I've had the little rugelach before too and they are also so good, the olive bread sticks are great, and this past holiday I got a beautiful challah. it was great. the honey cake sample I tried too was really good and moist. waited in line since it was the morning of RH but it moved quick and the staff was very nice.

Coffees to order in the back.

Valentine's Day is big business. Special heart shaped pastries and breads are prepared and then priced astronomically. I had come here for the Roselach, marzipan filled rugelach. Priced at $3.50 each it is pricey but so is marzipan. I bought two. The heart shaped hazelnut shortbread cookies looked tempting but at $14.95 a packet I placed them back on the shelf. Large heart shaped baguettes were also lined up on the bread shelf. Many customers were here but they were buying mostly what they usually buy. I would have liked the cinnamon roll but that would be on another visit.

Guess who remembered by bread! Back up to the usual 5 stars. Thanks breads! Always great.

Chain location but really good quality breads and quite an assortment. Has both indoor and outdoor seating and large location. Order coffees as well as the chocolate babka which was soo soo good. Got a couple breads to go and another loaf. Really recommend and enjoyed

Gifted these tasty treats in the mail: Received hamentashen: date, poppy, chocolate and black sesame and their famous, "award winning" chocolate babka. New York magazine called it "the best babka in NYC". Delicious hamentaschen cookies! Flew across the country and still tasted freshly baked. Tasty dough with lots of filling. They were all exceptional! My fave was the black sesame. Wow! I've never had this flavor before and now I'm a huge fan! Second fave was date. So delicious it beat chocolate. Number three was the chocolate. I froze and reheated the babka. So good! Definitely recommend! New York Magazine was right! Dreamy paired with a hot drink and vanilla ice cream for dessert. It's also pretty to look at!! What a great bakery. Would definitely come here on the regular if I lived in New York. I'm a fan!

Heard Breads Bakery is known for their babka but have yet to try it. Tried the banana chocolate chip cake and it was so delicious! It was moist, not overly sweet and you could really smell the banana once you open the packaging. Can't wait to try their other items!

Breads Babka - Chocolate (it's coming home with me!)

Breads Bakery had me at chocolate rugelach. It was love at first bite. If you try one thing at Breads, let it be the chocolate rugelach. I scarfed a couple, day-old, on the flight home yesterday and they were still magnificent! I also snagged a loaf of their famous chocolate babka and my family can attest that this braided loaf is worth making room in your backpack in order to schlep across the country. This week I had the good fortune of sampling rose pistachio croissants, citrus croustillants, and za'atar morning buns but nothing compared to the Breads Bakery chocolate rugelach. I will dream of this chocolate rugelach until I return again to New York.

Chocolate Rugelach ($2.95) - I liked this small and simple croissant! I'd recommend trying something else here though

I recently dropped in here for a cup of coffee after brunch. Lord did I have to exhibit some self control to not purchase everything in the bakery. I had never been to Breads before but have heard rave rave reviews. They specialize in babka, rugelach, baguettes, challah, croissants, a wide variety of loaf cakes, and cookies. I need to come back here for a special occasion or the holidays. But we just came for the coffee. Which was totally fine and a-okay. They have a selection of pour your own milks off to the side. They also had a cold section of smoked salmon and deli sandwiches which was interesting. Everything is a bit pricey. Their babka runs at almost $20. Minus the coffee and drink selections were super affordable. But have to definitely check out if their babka is award winning. I think I also recently heard their location in Williamsburg now makes babka pizza. I'm intrigued.

Ask the Community - Breads Bakery - Union Square

Is there seating at the Bakery?

Yes! There are tables and seating at the back of the cafe and usually outside too. Just note it gets busy around peak lunch time.

Do you ship out of state?

Yes they do!! Go to goldbelly! I tell my husband to get me babka instead of flowers :)

Is this kosher bakery?

No it is not certified kosher

What is the brand of the orange juice you serve, it was some of the best I ever had and can't remember!!?

Natalie's - it's in most grocery stores

Is there free WiFi here? Outlets?

There is a wifi code if you ask them, and there are some outlets here and there throughout the bakery

Do they use eggs in their breads(all)?

I wouldn't leave this up to the Community to answer...I'd actually CALL THE BAKERY for a more effective answer... one that could potentially harm you if the Community answered it incorrectly. Bread's Bakery Phone number is: 212-633-2253 Very Best

How long can a load of coconut chocolate stay fresh?

I'd keep it in the fridge max 1 week (but I guess that it will be difficult to be diligent with portions). I nuke pieces for 30-40 seconds and it does the trick.

How many days will the babka be good for if keeping it in the bag?

I'd recommend no more than a couple of days (should reheat it to soften it up, and it tastes better), otherwise, just freeze it and it defrosts beautifully.

They've kept this place in good condition. Lots of seating and menus everywhere. It once was an Art Deco bank, you can kind of get the feel of that just from looking around. If you look at the mural behind the cash out point it gives you a little touch of history what once happened within these walls. I ordered the salmon toast. It was a little hard but I like the cream cheese was thinly spread not just thrown in like many places. The salmon was good and the mint tasted fresh. The capers were like slightly toasted and crispy, i've never had them like that before and I loved it. I think the toast was just missing a little drizzle of olive oil on top. To be honest, I think the capers were my favorite part. They were just this unique texture. I've never experienced before. I also got an iced lavender chai latte to go. It was so light and delightful, with the perfect blend of lavender. I really enjoyed this place and would totally come back again.

When you enter there is a bar you can sit at and two large high top tables next to it. As you walk further in there is a lounge with couches and various sizes tables. The whole space is surrounded by books! Heaven! We ordered a chai, matcha and a ginger cookie. Shout out to the woman taking my order for comping me my drink for my birthday! Everyone from the staff was friendly - I really enjoyed being there. The only thing I would say is someone should come by to check on the tables more often as I had to return other people's abandoned drinks. But you know what first world problems, am I right? Maybe they can have a sign or mention to customers to return their own cups before leaving. I sort of can't imagine why people don't... It is quite popular spot so you need to be very patient and strategic if you want to grab a table, as well as sprinkled with a little bit of luck. We unfortunately got there a little late. I went there at 3pm and hunted for a table and my friend got there by 330pm. By the time we ordered and started drinking our coffees - we were informed the lounge area will be closed at 4pm to prepare for the evening wine bar. Oh right this cafe turns into a wine bar in the evenings! How cool! At 4pm we thankfully grabbed one of the high tables - sharing it with another couple but it was large enough for the 4 of us. The lights dimmed and the atmosphere changed to more intimate. We unfortunately had to leave at 5pm, but I imagined picking up a James Baldwin book, ordering some white wine and enjoying both.... Mmm definitely next time. Maybe sometimes after work - sounds like a great wind down.

We tried the melon shaved ice $22 for the large which was a bit pricy but it was quite delicious. We were worried that the large might be too much for two people but honestly we were able to finish it without a problem. The melon pieces were sweet, the ice is milk based so it was creamy and flavorful on its own. We barely used the condensed milk that it came with (and we loved how they put it on the side for us instead). At the bottom of the shaved ice was cereal pieces and mochi which gave a nice different texture. We also tried their drinks specifically their blue lemonade and mango-ade which I thought was just ok. The highlight is definitely their shaved ice. Definitely go for the large as the small seemed much smaller and for double the price, you can get almost 2-3x more. I loved seeing the plants along with hints of pink, orange, and yellow throughout the art and furniture. It's a gorgeous space. Service was good, nothing much to mention. For food, we ordered the royal chai, mango lassi, breakfast kathi-rito, and the condensed milk bun. The standouts were the royal chai and the breakfast kathi-rito. The royal chai was creamy, salty, perfect sweet, and silky. It had notes of cinnamon and saffron, paired with sea salt. I loved this drink. The breakfast kathi-rito was tasty. I loved the potatoes, cheese, egg, avocado, and whatever else was in it. The sauce on the side was delicious. Not exactly sure what it was but it was sweet with a kick. The mango lassi did not have enough mango flavor for me, I couldn't justify paying $10 for it. The condensed milk bun was good but it was similar to any other sweet bun in an asian bakery. I'd pass on both of these. Overall, I'd highly recommend checking out Fontainhas. It'd be a perfect spot to check out if you're in the area for the Brooklyn Flea, or just Dumbo.

I'm sad to say that this has turned out to be a disappointment, catering to the Matcha-drinking Alo-wearing DUMBO crowd. One Google reviewer referred to the cuisine here as "gentrified", which I'm inclined to agree with. The filter coffee was absolutely atrocious - one is not supposed to be asked "with or without milk?" when ordering filter coffee. The paneer sandwich was supposedly made with Amul butter, but any charming nostalgic aspect of this dish was removed by the dry layer of ghas-phus above the paneer bhurji. I am all for fusion as the propeler of culinary innovation, but I do not want to live in a future where Sweetgreen has infiltrated the foods that I hold near and dear to my heart.
