What can you say about the famous Breads Bakery that hasn't already been said. They have some of the best baked goods in the city. We've actually ordered a chocolate babka (you get 3 with your order) from this place years back for one of our Thanksgivings, so it was nice to finally step foot into this place. This place is buzzing with activity from all the patrons. The line is long but moves fairly quickly. Of course you have to buy or try the chocolate babka and their cinnamon rolls are the best as well. I will definitely be back while in New York. read more

Was in Union Square area and needed a snack. Amazingly, I wanted something savory instead of sweet. Passed by here a few times either for lunch or dinner but never had a chance to try. As soon as you walk in, the aroma captures your sense of smell. The store was full but not crowded. The seating is in the back of the bakery. The front is numerous options of various bread options that I had to walk around before I made my choice. I decided on a chocolate croissant. I love Breads Bakery. I used to work in the area and was a frequent visitor a few times a week for lunch and/or coffee and baked goods. Breads is a great option for a fast and healthy lunch. I'm a vegetarian and they have many good vegetarian sandwiches, soups and salads. Some of which are also vegan. Now to the good part. The baked goods are just some of the best I've ever had. Everything is so fresh and of premium quality! My favorites include the chocolate rugelach, chocolate babka, olive cheese breadstick and the potato bureka! So so good and delicious! The olive and cheese breadstick actually contains a lot of olives which is so nice. Just the perfect blend of salty olives, flavorful cheese and moist bread. The breadstick is soft and easy to eat on its own or with a bowl of warm soup. If I'm in the area, I always end up coming here for a quick bite and to take some treats for home as well. Highly recommend the place for fresh baked goods and healthy lunch options. It's also a good spot to get coffee but indoor seating can be a bit limited. read more

We got the chocolate nutella babka and the cheese straws. The babka is good; very rich and sweet so it is hard to eat much of it. It also tastes much better when it is heated - the dough becomes softer and less dry. The cheese straws were also yummy. We got them right as they came out of the oven so they were still warm. They were super buttery and cheesy; it kinda tasted like a cheesy, flaky croissant. 4/5 for the pastries. We went around 11 am and there was a short line that moved quickly. It was super easy to pick up the prepackaged babka, get in line, and order the cheese straws. 5/5 for the experience. Overall, Breads Bakery is overpriced and maybe a little overhyped but definitely worth a visit. read more

I absolutely adore their French sourdough, and the olive breadsticks are to die for. However, what they are famous for is their chocolate babka. To my surprise, I did NOT like it. And it wasn't just meh, it was a straight out dislike. The dough was horribly dry and the chocolate filling tasted watery. I don't know if I got a bad batch, but for me this is not worth the horrendously high price. I had many, many babkas in my life, but never one this dry and bland. read more

I really like the lemon meringue here - it's not too sweet and just the right amount of tart. I didn't try their famous babka and the cookie selection by the time we arrived was pretty sad, so cannot comment on those, but I'd like to come back and try them in the future. read more

Was walking around when I noticed that I forgot to get something for my parents when I was heading home. There seemed to be a decent amount of people here and was popular. So I naturally get attracted by that and walk in. I find out their most popular pastry is the chocolate babka so I get one of those. Even though it looks kinda like a croissant (in how it's made since there's lots of layers), it's a very heavy dish. I thought it was good, nothing too special though. There's so many good pastry shops here in manhattan, I wouldn't recommend this spot to folks. It's good though still. read more

After visiting France, I was craving for real bread. Bread that are made from natural yeast and not from baking powder. I knew the only place that I'll find this kind of satisfaction was from a legit bakery and that's how I ended up here. Luckily I came right around 7pm and that's when all their bread (not pastries) goes on a 40% discount. I ended up buying their raisin, walnut rye and although it was not exactly like the ones I experienced from France, it was pretty tasty. My only qualm was how thick the crust is and wish it was a tad bit thinner. As for their customer service, the person that served me my bread was very friendly and polite. The location is very convenience but I guess the convenience also comes at a higher cost because this bakery is not that cheap. There are a couple breads now, so this is kind of meant to be one half a store wide review, the other half me reviewing this place specifically. The store near union has some great lighting, and during the times that I've been there, it's never been too crowded. There is actually a bathroom in here, in case you were curious. I believe the seating inside here is self seating, so you won't have to pay for any wait service (this is my experience from the summer of 2018), but do clean up after yourself. On of the more popular items here are the babkas. I think that it's a safe bet to go with the chocolate babka. I have also gotten the chocolate chip cookie on occasion, and I think it's pretty decent. It's a little crunchier than I'd like it to be (more of a soft cookie fan), but overall it's pretty good- a 4/5 cookie. If I had to pick my favorite item here though, it would probably be the Rugelach. For me, it isn't too sweet, yet wonderfully chocolatey. I discovered Bread's bakery through volunteering with New York Cares, this place donates any unsold food everyday to those less fortunate. Is really wonderful for the people who get their donations and might not otherwise be able to try out this place and prevents good food from being thrown out. Besides the fact that they are doing wonderful service to the community by donating their food, the staff here is extremely nice and friendly. I've had the pleasure of trying their chocolate babka and it's really the best babka I've ever tried! It's seriously addictive and I could probably eat the whole loaf by myself since once you start eating it you don't want to stop. They put the perfect amount of chocolate so you get the nice dark chocolate taste all throughout the crispy yet fluffy dough. I went there on a Friday morning and they were fully stocked up, everything was fresh and full of flavor. Huge fan of the breakfast sandwich here. Light and fluffy bread with fluffy eggs. They come with a slice of cheese on top (that I assume melts when it's heated) but you can request it be removed if you, like me, are not the biggest cheese fan. The babka here is iconic for a reason - rich, buttery and chocolatey. It's not my kryptonite (since I don't love super rich desserts / pastries), but my friends loved it. Meh. Based on all the amazing reviews I'm going to assume I chose the least exciting item on the menu. I ordered the Red Shakshuka (pictured) and it was super underwhelming. No flavor. At all. Tasted like super basic pizza dough topped with canned diced tomato, egg, and a sprig of fresh parsley... Oh, and MAYBE a sprinkle of garlic powder (not even canned minced garlic). Super disappointing. Waste of money. I ordered my shakshuka hot (the friendly cashier asked me if I wanted it warmed up), to dine-in. But by the time I ate it, it was lukewarm. From the time my shakshuka was handed to me, it took the barista nearly 10 minutes to make my iced latte. She made at least 5 other drinks (for people who ordered AFTER me) before she decided to make mine. And she just sort of threw it at me. Jet lag woke us up early. Decided to go for early morning walk in NYC. We were hungry so decided to stop at a local bakery. Turned out to be this delectable spot!!!!! Pretty pricey for bread but I tasted it once I got back home and it was so delicious. Melted in my mouth. I froze the rest of it and brought it back to LA to share with my parents and they also really liked it. Defrosted the bread and put it in the oven for 5 min and the bread was sizzling and delicious. You can freeze and bake it and tastes even better. I wasn't in the bakery for too long to see how service was but the employees were nice to me during my 5 minutes in there. Would I come back?
