THE BRETZEL WAS EVERYTHING I DIDNT KNOW I NEEDED. Chocolate Hazelnut Babka in a pretzel shape, I mean come on!? I could have eaten four of them. They were a bit low on breads when I stopped in probably because it was a bit later in the day and because it was Rosh Hashanah. I will definitely return, but earlier in the day so that I could get my hands on some of the bread! When I entered, there was one person being helped and another person in the line ahead of me. Lots of goods to choose from. I found the pain au chocolat to be kind of dull and soft. Not even slightly crispy. It was layered inside, it was just fine. Chocolate was decent. Randomly stopped by this bakery and was immediately impressed by the selection of breads and pastries. I came a little bit later towards the end of the day, so they were already out of stock for some items. However, their bread looks so beautiful. As for what I ordered, I got a ham and cheese sandwich, which I wish was toasted since the bread was hard (expected though because it was a baguette and I came around the afternoon). However, when I heated it up later at home the sandwich was surprisingly delicious, even with very few ingredients. Service was friendly and kind! No complaints there. Would've preferred the larger size because I feel like I mainly tasted the pastry & not the filling. - Mini Pain Au Chocolat: technically very well done, not greasy at all with beautiful pockets of air between each croissant layer. Chocolate was nice & bittersweet as I prefer. - Pissaladiere Slice: The most unique!! I always have to resist the urge to wander into Le Fournil when I pass by it on the street. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The bright red, white and blue French flag storefront just beckons to be entered and savored. Definitely not cheap, but reasonable by NYC standards. The mini croissant and pain au chocolat are only $1 and a great way to sample the viennoiserie as well as treat the kiddos. The pistachio croissant was a thing of beauty and decadence. The Croque Tomato Mozzarella (basically a Croque Monsieur but with tomato instead of ham) was delicious, but oddly sold cold. I had hoped to have it fresh for lunch, but was surprised to see it unheated. I was advised to heat it on the griddle at home. I'm not sure what I was doing wrong but even after heating it on low-heat on a pan, it wasn't good and was very dense and dry. I would skip the Croques in the future. read more

It's not hard/flakey/crusty like other croissants, but rather, fluffy and pull-apart, and the dough was chewy. I kind of enjoyed that, even though I wasn't expecting it, and would def recommend getting their croissants. BELGIAN WAFFLE w CUSTARD - a little cold, so this was take it or leave it FETA SPINACH PASTRY - love a feta spinach moment, a little savory, not super fresh when I got it around noon, was okay and definitely scratched the itch. This is the only bakery I found in Lower Manhattan that most resembles an authentic French bakery. The chairs and tables face outward towards 2nd Avenue just like how the Europeans do it abroad, they sell a variety of bake goods and sandwiches, and they also have French snacks. Even the staff, some of them speak French! To sum, if you are looking for a Paris bakery experience, look no further, stop by Le Fiurnil, which literally means "bakery" in the East Village. Go early in the AMs and order a raspberry/pastacio croissant or a Canelé before it's sold out. It truly is a treat! Also, going to the Le Fournil in the morning has another advantage - The baguettes they sell are fresh and warm. What? FRESH AND WARM BAGUETTES. Yes!! It will feel like a warm blanket on a cold morning. The texture is crunchy and chewy at the same time. It tastes wayyyyy better than the ones you buy from grocery stores. My friends and I came on a Saturday morning with little to no wait and plenty of outdoor seating available. The staff were very kind and playful as they helped us picked out a sweet pastry because we had so much trouble choosing from the many options. I tasted: - ham and cheese sandwich: we easily picked this pastry as our savory item because the amount of cheese encrusted on the exterior was epic & the toast level looked divine. Unfortunately, this was a big let down in every way. They popped the sandwich in the toaster for a few minutes but it was still cold when we consumed it. The cheese had an almost rubbery texture because it was crusty but still cold. The bread and sandwich internals were still cold and stiff and it was hard to appreciate any sort of flavor. I would not order this again (or I'd request and extra long toast) - almond croissant: a nice treat to wrap up the meal. It's properly crunchy and not overwhelmingly sweet. It did look exceptionally flat although that did not compromise the taste. Apparently, this item often sells out first. I liked it but am interested in giving other pastries a try next time. There is only limited outdoor seating with one umbrella. The sun was beating down this morning as we huddled under the umbrella. I would not be surprised if other customers suffered any degree of sunburn. Also, there is a high density of trash along the sidewalks that blew over to the seating area and bundled around our legs over the course of our consumption. This was unpleasant but ultimately a result of our city and not this bakery. I'm still down to give the place another shot! read more

Not going to write much but this is probably my favorite traditional French bakery in the city. The croissants whether they be almond or plain as well as the pain au chocolat are all excellent. There's also a reason why a lot of spots use their outstanding baguettes. My favorite thing here is actually their canelé. It has just enough rum and the texture is perfect and it's not too sweet compared to many spots. Would write more but there's really no need. Upper 4. Tried the almond croissant and one each of their minis. Came right at opening so some of them still had warmth from the oven. The ratio of inside to crust is very different for a mini but they were exceptional. The outside was flaky and really crisp. The inside was buttery without being greasy and had a really rich flavour. It tasted almost caramelized. The almond croissant was also amazing and super flaky. Everything was so buttery and tasty. One of the best croissants I've eaten! The staff was friendly and helpful. Horrible service today from the kid with lip piercings and the very snotty girl working with him. Both clearly hate their jobs. We bought two ham and cheeses baguettes that were pretty dry. My husband went back in and asked for mustard - yes, a faux pas for this authentic boulangerie. When told they had none, he asked for butter and was given one pat. He asked for a second one and the girl just flung it at the counter with total hostility and contempt. So he flung it back at her. It shatters, it crisps, it had a tender and buttery interior. Raspberry isn't traditional but, the filling adds a nice tart component without being overwhelmingly sweet. The hot chocolate, I was disappointed with. It's pretty much your typical American hot chocolate, so don't go in expecting a luscious chocolat chaud. But all was forgiven with that croissant. Haven't been to this spot in a bit but so glad I stopped in on a brisk wi ter's day! Every item I got was divine (very few pics as we just inhaled things), but I can tell you that each thing I got was DIVINE! Also, I tried all new things: the croque monsieur was crisp, and had a good balance of chew in each bite from the creamy cheese to the savory harm which honestly was a higher caliber than our American kind! The apricot crème is hands down a work of art! Besides having slivers of actual apricot (as opposed to just jam, it has some kind of lemon filling and a custard as well making for a flavor sensation hard to describe but your belly and brain (as well as your tongue will all be in happy agreement)!! And he cherry/yogurt danish had a wonderful tart yet rather ch flavor with layers of flaky dough as a counterbore. The apple must have been good cuz my companion didn't leave me a bite!! And the coffee was top notch (and I'm definitely a coffee snob. I wish I had bought more things but since the bill was $30, I guess I can wait!! Go, because its totally worth it!!
