We came primarily for the sunshine croissant, but all three were delicious. * Sunshine croissant - guava, passionfruit, and orange custard filling. Not too sweet, good lamination. Croissant was nice and crispy. * Turkish egg croissant - a runny egg on top of a savory yogurt base and drizzled with chili crisp and dill. Suuuuuper crispy and flakey. * Everything cruffin - everything seasoning with a chive cream cheese. I've now been to tall poppy several times and it might just be my favorite bakery in the city. Their laminated dough is fantastic (butter!!) and serves as the basis for so much of what they do. Heard so many good things about Tall Poppy and finally got to try it. I've been a few times now and have to say they definitely are one of the best bakeries in Manhattan and love the concept that everything they do here is with laminated dough, including their quite impressive cinnamon roll that holds its own in the now stiff competition of Cinnamon Rolls in NYC. The cream cheese frosting was nice and smooth, on the sweeter side, not too funky, and that lamination in the dough was nice and airy, with a crunch that went throughout which you don't get to often. I for one like crunch as a texture, though I know cinnamon rolls tend to be soft/doughy. Their regular croissants were also delicious and definitely high ranking in NYC, I'd say. I love a cinnamon roll so I finally tried one from Tall Poppy. When I got to the bakery, there were only 2 left! Mikayla (I think that was her name) was lovely to talk to. She shared the specials they had. I went home and heated up my cinnamon roll in the air fryer. It tasted much better after being heated up. It tasted like an elevated Cinnabon but crispier edges. Croissants at Tall Poppy are always a delight to eat. Invariably I come here after exercising around 1 pm which then gives me all pastries at half price. If you love laminated pastries, do not skip this place. The place may be small, but they have a full assortment of buttery treats. If you only do one thing, you better do it well. Tall Poppy does baked goods exceptionally well. Currently, our bar for classic croissants is Librae's. I'd rank Tall Poppy an easy second or third right behind Librae for its plain croissant. It's nothing to sneeze at, but doesn't unseat Librae from its reign of exceptionalism. Their everything cruffin reminded me a bit of Librae's za'atar labneh morning bun, and Tall Poppy absolutely nailed the execution on this laminated pastry filled with a chived cream cheese. Tall Poppy offers very unique flavors for all things croissants, which definitely intrigued me when I first heard about it. When I walked into the establishment, I was pretty shocked to see the size of the pastries next to their whopping $9 price point. I ordered the shakshuka croissant. It was the size of my palm.. it had tomato sauce and an egg. The croissant base was nothing special and it didn't help that it was ice cold. Flavor wise, also nothing spectacular that I can't find anywhere else. My second order was the goat cheese & hot honey. In terms of flavor, this was stronger and felt much more substantial compared to the shakshuka. However again, it was about the size of my hand. I've personally never been in person, but I've had my husband pick up a few things for me to try. He's picked up a few rolls along with the everything croissant and the seasonal sugar cookie almond croissant. The almond croissant was great, and PACKED full of flavor. The rolls were not my favorite as I just don't prefer a laminated dough roll. The best thing about Tall Poppy are their inventive flavors, but my husband has told me once they're out of something for the day, that's it. Came by to try a couple items from the May menu (the spanakopita bun and tiramisu croissant) and alas was not impressed. Firstly, the tiramisu croissant was really small for the price (8 bucks) and the taste did not account for it either. The amount of cream within was appalling. Literally dime sized and just tasted like coffee grounds with huge pieces of dark chocolate. The lamination was beautiful but that was about it. The spanakopita bun was okay, the filling was few and far between but taste wise the spinach cheese mixture was enjoyable but wish there was a lot more within. Wow I heard this place on instagram. You know, I am never a fan of promoting biz on instagram by food bloggers but I am immediately intrigued by the flavors Tall Poppy offers. Really wonderful. My husband says the cinnamon roll is probably his favorite ever. I like its combination of laminated layers that still have that soft texture of the classic cinnamon roll.
