Ok so I came back for the Babka. WOW. It's kind of like their chocolate rugelach but....BIGGER. Whatever ganache they use to get that rich, sweet, chocolate flavor is beyond me. The nice thing about Breads is that they bake throughout the day, so, you can still get a warm and gooey bread in the late afternoon. Also, they were promoting a special for babka: 2 for $20. I am so so so grateful that Breads Bakery is only two blocks away from where I work. It's really nice to know I can grab some AWESOME pastry whenever I get hungry at work. I've been to this place twice in the last week and both times did not disappoint. The employees here are very friendly and serve you with a great attitude - it seem like they really enjoy working here. I got a cheesecake the first time I was here. The cheesecake itself is $8 (yes, I know it's a bit expensive) and it was tasty! The portion was just the right amount (I couldn't even finish it actually) and the cheese was not too heavy at all! I came back yesterday and tried and famous Nutella Babka - they sell for $12.95 each but if you buy two you can get both for $20.00! I only bought one because you know I don't need all that extra calories in me. Let me tell you how AMAZING this Babka was!! The Babka was SOOOOOO soft and FILLED with nutella! It's like every bite I take - some nutella falls off the crust. This is one of the best and tasty pastry I've ever tried in my life - YES IT'S REALLY THAT GOOD! Keep in mind though you probably won't be able to finish one Babka by yourself! I also want to mention a while back my co worker got me one of their croissants to try and it was delicious as well! Their croissant has some type of cream inside which makes it taste a lot better than all the other places I've tried! Chocolate almond croissant- finally got there early enough (11am on Saturday) because they run out of these early. $4.50! Crazy high price aside, the taste of this was a real letdown. This is my new favorite place!!! How can water and flour be this good!!!!! I don't know how, but they are magicians. This place should be freaking illegal. I'm so serious.. (They offer them all willy nilly) I decided against the babka because not everyone would appreciate this masterpiece. BUT if you like ultimate blissful decadence then the Chocolate/Nutella Babka is a MUST. It's rich, chocolatey, buttery HEAVEN. I also tried the Gouda cheese straw and the cinnamon roll. Could get five stars but three is average for what they lack. Croissants are over the top, up to par with Eric Kayser but babka did not meet my expectations cuz of stellar reviews. Olive bread stick was tastier looking at it than eating it, dry and lacking flavor. Coffee bar peeps need to get it together. Ordered a small hot latte after a long wait considering no one was in front of me. However, received a large latte instead. Rather than apologizing for the screw up, they treated me like i should b grateful as i was being charged for a small latte while they gave me a big one. Would have been the case if they did not get defensive when i said the large latte was warm, mostly milk n lacking espresso. They responded, that is how we make them here (aka we do not give a sh#t and you should pay more if you want more espresso). Wtf!!!!! Came here for breakfast. Walking by the shop looked extremely cute so I decided to stop in. I ended up getting scramble egg with Gouda sandwich, a rhubarb danish and a ice latte. The sandwich was quite small for the price. Only 3 items ended up being $17 ! The taste was alright nothing memorable or unique. It's a cute cafe but the price was more than what I would have expected based on what I got. However the atmosphere is pleasant and they have alternative options for milk such as soy and almond which is always a plus for me. Might come back for the coffee. An article I found from 2013 listed Breads Bakery's cinnamon rolls as one of the best in NYC, so I had to try it. I went on a Saturday night around 7PM looking to satisfy my craving for a cinnamon roll, only to be slightly disappointed. Don't get me wrong, this cinnamon roll was surprisingly delicious. It was light, flaky, and subtly sugary. Don't bother with the sandwiches and other pre-prepped items. They are overpriced and on par with airport food. We got the salmon sandwich, the only one that is not pre-prepped. It was fine but had way too much cream cheese that overpowered the bread. My boyfriend asked if he could get avocado added to his and that was a flat "no" even though I'm pretty sure they had it. Not very good service... The bread, while also pricy is very good, so three stars for that. We got a loaf of walnut bread ($7.50) to take home, which is definitely worth trying. Came in for a quick bite because I only had 15 minutes for lunch (uh there was a sale at J. Crew) and the line at Whole Foods would gobble that up; I couldn't bear to hand over almost $4 for a pain au chocolat ("chocolate croissant") and looked for something new to justify the cost. I got a fancy challah with cheese and cranberries and a chocolate babka for the team (colleague's birthday + sorry-we-all-have-to-work-the-Friday-post-July-4th), which altogether was about quadruple the cost of the croissant but fed a lot more people. The challah had a crunchy cheesy exterior with generous cranberries, savory and sweet; I have to give props to the babka, the insider knowledge is that you want the middle parts (most chocolate) versus the ends (less chocolate), but the whole thing was swirled with gooey melted chocolate. I used to live in France, where I walked on average of 2 hours a day but never lost any weight because of all the carbs in my diet. I love bread, and I like Breads Bakery, but the price points are much too dear for everyday consumption, compared to the boulangeries of those plump, delicious days or even my local bakeries in my Brooklyn hood. I'd go in for the special loaves versus the individual baked goods, but there's something antithetical about saving to buy my daily bread. read more

Chocolate Babka. If there's such a thing as a good accident, then my family had one over a year ago when we stumbled into this bakery almost near their closing time. My sister loves her pastries and we saw one chocolate babka loaf left. You can't buy by the slice, only a whole loaf. Not knowing what it was, she bought it and figured the whole family will have it over coffee when we go back home. Fast forward several months later and this chocolate babka is demanded when holidays come around. If my brother forgets it, he gets a sermon from her. No one will forget to bring the chocolate babka. If you warm it in the oven for a few minutes, I think you will forget your own name. The chocolate melts a little, it's warm, it's gooey, it's soft, the top still has a bite, and it is that much better! According to their website, they ship their chocolate babka nationwide. I think I know what my sister is getting for her bday... Marzipan cookies are great, especially if you are a marizpan fan. The jam in the middle is either Strawberry, Raspberry, or Apricot. My favorite is the strawberry, then the apricot, followed by raspberry. I think I ate 4 in one sitting. It's not overwhelmingly sweet, even with the jam, like some marzipan recipies I've tried. Rugelah (totally spelling that wrong) - both chocolate and marzipan are delicious. Try both because they're the perfect 2-3 bite size. Cretzel - thinking this is the hold of a croissant and pretzel? Pretty good! Something different. It has just the right amount of flakiness where the whole thing doesn't fall apart; a nice salty buttery flavor that makes you go "Hmm"... Then next thing you know you've eaten the whole thing and nothing but sesame seeds all around and on you. Almond Croissant - holy richness. Delicious but in a sinful way. Butter and sugar is all that oozed out of it (and of course marzipan, but definitely butter and sugar) and settled happily but guiltily into my belly. Cannelle Patisserie is still #1 in my book of almond croissants. Creme Brulee danish - rich filling, light dough layers. Nothing wrong with it, but would I order it again? Probably not because there is just too much more to try. Tried their seasonal Hamantaschen. Their website describes these as "triangular, flavor-filled pastries are available for a limited time, to sync with the festive Jewish holiday of Purim". Tried the flavors: poppy seed, dates with sweet red wine and walnuts, sour apple, and vanilla chocolate chip. The only flavor I liked was sour apple. Their coffee is good. Comes with a small pastry treat (IMO, you could skip that and get something else). If I was hungrier, I would've liked to try some of their delicious looking lunch items. Looked like they were made with simple and fresh ingredients. A bit pricey, but that's expected - it is NYC and as long as quality matches the price tag. Service at the back counter is much friendlier than one of the cashiers in the front. I saw that Breads Bakery made it to a Cooking Channel show called Unique Sweets. I'm sure that helped create the chocolate babka madness I see in there. read more

My company really likes this place and I have been here twice already. The pastries are delicious but sometimes too sweet. [almond croissant, cheese danish] But overall, the baked goods are yummy. I gave this place 3 stars instead of 4/5 because the both times I walked in with a starbucks cup, the owner gives me a frown and walks me back to the cafe and provides me a free cup of their brew. Don't get me wrong, it's a great sales pitch (ie. the free coffee), but the guy also goes on to insult me by my coffee choice. (ie. i walked in with a starbucks coffee and he tells me that my choice of coffee can never be as great as theirs and that he was once young and made the same poor choice..) ummm ok? So although the pastries AND coffee is yummy and good, respectively; Please don't tell me that my life choices are a mistake because I walked into your place with a different cup of coffee. read more

I assume everyone raving over the babka has never actual eaten authentic babka before. Breads' babka is okay, but certainly not the best babka I've ever had. I do think it freezes well, and it's great in a pinch when I'm too lazy to make my own or need a last minute item to bring to a potluck or brunch. It is, however, fairly expensive for such a small loaf. My biggest issue with the babka is that there's supposed to be a good bread to chocolate ratio, but Breads' babka is a bit too heavy on the chocolate. It's almost too sweet to eat more than a slice at a time. There's so much chocolate that the dough falls apart instead of keeping together the way a good babka should. It tastes like nutella or pre-made chocolate filling instead of actual chocolate, which is probably why the babka tastes off to me. It has that processed dessert taste instead of a fresh bakery taste. I have the same complaint about the rugelach. My other big issue is that every time I've been here, the customer service has been atrocious. The last time I was there, I was going to pick up a few things some friends and coworkers back home had requested. When I asked about vegan items and allergens - specifically, nuts - the cashier shrugged and said she didn't know and didn't have time to find out. She seemed annoyed I even asked about it. I 100% understand a bakery not having vegan items, but not even knowing if anything is vegan? And not knowing whether any your items contain nuts? That's pretty egregious. She was lucky I was shopping for other people and I don't have those dietary restrictions or else I'd have been really annoyed. Overall, I buy this babka when I'm in NY because I have people who like it and it does make a good gift for people who can't tell the difference between inauthentic and authentic babka. Breads' babka is like the Hersey's chocolate of babka - and that's not a compliment. Of course, I'm probably just biased because I grew up with my family's babka recipe. It might not be fair to compare the two, especially when anyone reading this review will never taste my family's recipe, but what can I say? I've bought fresh bread from a lot of bakeries in New York but Breads is my favorite, I especially love getting their bread of the day, it's the same every week but these varieties are some of my favorite. Three words: Danish Creme Brulee I didn't understand what I was seeing either when I walked by the booth at Broadway Bites. Do I like Danish? No, it always seems to have a jelly or cream filling that tastes synthetic and over processed. Do I LOVE creme brulee? Of course, so naturally, I gave the treat a chance. I am so glad that I ventured out of my comfort zone. After one bite, I stopped dead in my tracks (walking would have taken away from the pure sensory assault this slice of heaven was doing to my brain). The pastry was heavenly: light, crispy, and sprinkled with almond slices. It was the fresh creme brulee in the middle of the danish that sent me over the edge. It was creamy, not too dense, and had a hint of almond extract that made it so perfect, a tear came to my eye. Bottomline.... Would I recommend? YES Will I be gaining 10 pound from daily trips to this bakery? OF COURSE read more

Great little neighborhood bakery and café - nice sandwiches and good pastries! Their sandwiches were are fresh and great for a light lunch. I like the smoked salmon or the egg salad on a croissant. They also have nice sides (beet salad, chickpea salad, cauliflower and tahini). The shaksuka here isn't that great. Pastries here are fresh and tasty. I recommend the chocolate rugelach and chocolate babka. The café can get a little crowded and is very noisy. Come here to pick up some sandwiches and go to the park for a picnic! read more

Happened upon this place as I was walking by and needed a small snack. What a great accident. The place smells amazing when you walk in and there is such a huge selection of baked goods from all things sweet to savory. They have all these fruit tarts, cheesecakes, chocolate cakes and sweets displayed. All so mouth watering. But I was feeling something savory so I went for a spinach and feta bureka. Flaky crusty pastry dough wrapped around and creamy feta and spinach filled filling. I wish it was heated it up but even at it's cooled temperature it was delicious. Meh. I'm kind of surprised at how highly this place is rated to be honest. Miniature Mediterranean quiche was completely unimpressive, and the chocolate roll ended up being nothing more than a dry dinner roll with normal-quality-chocolate chunks in it. The loaf of sourdough was quite good, but certainly not amazing or worth the price I paid for it. That said, the staff was friendly on the whole, and the interior is bright, attractive and had plenty of places to sit. I was on the go recently and just wanted a tiny morsel of heaven from this bakery, unfortunately they don't sell babka by the slice so I resorted to the ruggelah ... it was equally as delicious (and I loved that it had the soft pillowey texture similar to babka). OH MAN! What a find, WHAT A FIND! I LOVE YELP when it leads to me a gem like Breads Bakery. The Mrs. and I really needed to get replenished after a killer group exercise class in Union Square.. and at 2PM on a Sunday we find ourselves at Breads. As we walk in, they have free samples. I LOVE FREE! We get our hands on a spicy cheese ball (think doughy bread baked with spicy cheese) and knew this place was special. This cafe gets fairly packed but thankfully we took over a couple's table on their way out. I ordered 2 Tuna Rolls (about $8 each), 1 cafe latte, and 1 cappuccino. ALL WERE PHENOMENAL. Tuna Roll breakdown: Sitting in the middle of a delicious roll is fresh tuna, 3-4 slices of boiled egg, cucumber slices, tomato, and a mayo-like sauce. It was just TOO GOOD. My wife actually ordered another one to so she can have it at work tomorrow haha! Espresso drinks breakdown: Each came with their NY Times reviewed Poppy Seed Cake. The Cafe Latte and Cappuccino were amazing and the Poppy Seed cake paired nicely with them - I've honestly never tried a pastry quite like it. My friend and I had gotten into a chocolate babka kick after being introduced to it at Trader Joe's, so we figured that the "Best Chocolate Babka in NYC" was worth a try. When we got to the bakery, the staff was very friendly, and they gave us a sample of the very chocolate babka that we had come to try. We knew were were going to buy a loaf, so we got it and took it home to eat it when it could be warmed up (which always makes it better because the chocolate melts). Anyway, their version is a chocolate-Nutella babka, and it was really good, but I would have preferred it if it were just plain chocolate babka. I think the Nutella was too overpowering. (Although, if you're a big fan of Nutella, this will be right up your alley.) We could taste the freshness of the bread, so that was a plus. Met a friend for coffee here this morning and had a wonderful time. We both got the muesli roll and coffee. While the price was a bit higher than I would like to see ($2.50 for an average cup of coffee?) The muesli roll was the perfect mix of subtle sweetness from real fruit and heartiness of seeds in a high-quality bread. Loved that this wasn't a heavy breakfast sweet loaded with butter and sugar. The staff was friendly and helpful. Samples are always a win in my book - I'll be coming back for a chocolate roll and loaf of bread soon. Fast Forward to today. Breads is really just in a class of its own. The freshness of the pastries, the care that goes into everything they make.... Still to this day my favorite things here are the Challah Bread and the Egg Salad.
