We found this place while traveling home from Cherokee after trying unsuccessfully to go to another place. It's nothing to look at outside, but we've learned to overlook outside appearances. Breakfast was delicious! Crisp bacon, eggs perfectly cooked, and good hash browns. The biscuits and gravy were not to die for, but we've given up on finding a place that makes homemade biscuits or real sawmill gravy. Good service, great prices. My husband was eating off my plate! Their unsweetened iced tea was perfect, crisp, clear, just the right bite. Sweet potato fries excellent. We want to come back for the yummy looking burgers sometime! Easy parking, nice wait staff, reasonable prices, big windows with lots of light, quick service, large portions. The omelet is huge. Northerner notes: I wasn't used to the leavening used in the omelet to make it so huge and impossibly fluffy more like a souffle. Also Cheese slices (or something very soft) used vs hard cheddar. I had eggs, potatoes, and toast and my husband had the same plus meats and biscuits and gravy. We were both plenty full before our drive up the Blue Ridge Parkway and hike in Mt. Mitchell State Park. Though a resident of close by Black Mountain, earlier this week was my first visit to this shoppe. My wife and I had the Western omelet and French toast. The omelet was great. Fluffy eggs which are rare in restaurant omelets. Good "stuff" inside the eggs. And the French toast was just like Mother used to cook; not some gussied up fancy version. A week later my wife and I decided to try something from the dinner menu and am I sooo glad we did. In my opinion this is the best hamburger you will find anywhere in town. We're from out of town and had to stop at Harley shop across the road. We ask the young lady there where to go for breakfast. This joint makes stick to your ribs homemade food served with a smile and how is your day going. It is a local place that gladly accepts tourists and loves to share what it good in the area. We were skeptical because it was attached to a shell gas station. It was very, very good!! It's your typical hole in the wall grits and eggs diner but those guys back there in the kitchen have really gotten it down. Everything that came to our table was perfect. If I could give them 0 stars, I would. I visited this morning because they were the only restaurant in the area open on MLK day. I found a long black hair in my eggs and when I requested a new serving from the waitress she had the audacity to laugh and say "this aint IHOP,baby". They restrooms were appalling as well, only one was in working order and it smelled as though it might be the only working facility in a 30 mile radius. The coffee,which was arguably the best part of my meal, was intolerable as it was cold but at least it was recognizable. If I had the time to have this establishment shut down, I would, but alas I will just warn others and take my business elsewhere. read more
