Smothered steak, real mashed potatoes and collards.
    Janet G.

We arrived in Asheville late this evening and we were staying at the Ramada Inn. We drove right by the restaurant on our way to the hotel and it had 4 stars so we checked in and decided to try it. It reminded us of our Morrison's Cafeteria from our home town. The food choices were endless but we finally decided on smothered steak, mashed potatoes and collards for me, roast beef, broccoli casserole and green beans for my husband. We got a slice of lemon meringue pie to split. I loved everything on my plate. The collards tasted great but didn't taste greasy or bitter at all. My husband said the broccoli casserole was just ok but he really enjoyed the roast beef and green beans. For both of us the food was very plentiful and neither of us could eat it all. We did, however, eat the piece of pie. It wasn't as good as mine but it was still good, with real meringue. We were pleasantly surprised by the food and the friendly service.

I go to Black Mountain at least once a year and when I do I have to go to J&S each time I go. I have never been disappointed in my food here. One thing I always get is the 7 layer salad. It has lettuce, mayo, peas, cheese, eggs, bacon bits, and corn. It is creamy with some texture to it with the boiled egg chunks, and crunch from the lettuce. I also love the southern fried steak. It is covered in brown gravy and I get it sitting on a mountain of mashed potatoes. I finally discovered their chicken fingers on my last trip. These things are huge! They have a beer batter or tempura type breading on them. They are great dipped in the gravy. All of the sides I have had have been really tasty. They range from baked carrots to fresh broccoli. J&S has introduced an all you can eat special. I have not ordered it as I can never finish the portion I get on a regular plate.

There was only 1 other table seated when we arrived, but decided to give it a try. The staff told us we could sit anywhere, we did, they came to get drink orders, and came back shortly after with our drinks and ready to take our food order.....but they had not yet given us menus. The waiter brough us menus, which were about half the size of what we saw online, and when asked he said they were "revamping" their menu, so this is all they could offer now... I ended up ordering the "southern hospitality" breakfast biscuit with a side of home fries. After placing our orders the waiter left without saying anything, and we never saw him again (???). Eventually, after a bit of a wait, someone else came out from the kitchen with our food, but he wasn't sure who had what. I will say the southern hospitality was piled high and a very large for the price, but it was a bit too large and messy with the pimento cheese to try and eat with my hands, unfortunately it's served in a piece of wax paper in plastic basket...trying to cut your food in basket full of holes, just means the wax paper tears. In the end it was good, a great price, but a much bigger mess than it needed to be. They staff needs to work on communication/people skills, and serve the food on a plates.....baskets are fine for finger foods, like fries, but not in a nicer place where you may need to use utensils.

The best falafel (a daily Benedict special) and that's saying something given I've eaten falafels in Israel, Turkey and NYC. The bed of arugula and hollondaise sauce was chef's kiss. Then there's the side dish of the feta potato salad. OMG! The server called the chef "young, hungry, and polished..." and truly I agree. My honey is a meat and potatoe dude and the burger he had was sumptuous. A hint of horseradish (he thinks) with the smoky bacon and perfect seasoned fries. In summary... total gastronomic taste gasm. The menu is Southern creative. We started with the biscuits and gravy appetizer which might have been a mistake because I was almost too full for my entree after sampling it. The signature gravy was heavenly! We scooped it up with our forks when we ran out of biscuit. The coffee is excellent and we all enjoyed the fresh squeezed juice. (Those are important touches for breakfast.) the service is super friendly. Maybe could use a more extensive child's menu. My older son eats like a little adult but my younger kid is a typical "kid" eater. Although he loved his waffles and the picture provided for coloring. If I lived in this neighborhood, I'd be walking down here all the time.
