Breakout Waikiki is such a fun experience! They're located inside of King's Village, but the main entrance is on the backside on Kaiulani Ave. Call to make a reservation, they are by appointment only! Prices vary and to some may be pricey, but hey get together with some friends and split the cost! I went with a group of 7 people total and it came out to about $34 a person. You have just ONE HOUR to breakout of your room of choice. It almost feels like you're in a game, or you're on a mission in a movie or something and the world is depending on you and your team to breakout! If you hype yourself up like that you'll have more fun trust me. The workers are always super friendly and fun, they definitely make your experience there worthwhile! ESCAPETHEROOMers second destination on our Hawaii tour is Honolulu. Our first escape room location on the island is at "Breakout Waikiki" back in April 2019. This new location of "Breakout Waikiki" would be considered prime in real estate terminology. Located right on Kalakaua Ave, there's tons of shopping and things to do. Although parking could be an issue, you can valet park at the "Embassy Suite by Hilton" right across the street from them and they will validate your parking. So you can park there for 4 hours for $6.00. We were grateful that the manager was able to meet with us bright and early at 8:30am for our first game. Since this new location just opened, they are still trying to beta-test and prepare all of their other games for the public. We tried the only game that was available at the time - "Y2K". The storyline featured a computer bug that takes down networks all around the world and we have to reset the system before midnight. We felt that the puzzles were a little weak in terms of the connection with the storyline. At the end, we were confused on what the end goal was since the puzzles within the game didn't have much to do with the storyline. There were some cool design aspects of the room towards the end which we enjoyed. The incorporation of music into the game design was enjoyable especially for the 90's music lover in us. We felt that if the storyline correlated with the puzzles more, this could be a stronger room. We had two people for this room and couldn't finish the last puzzle in time. We suggest 3-4 people is a good amount in order to tackle this room since there are puzzles that could be completed seperately. We also had the privilege to take a sneak peek of their "The Hero" room at the new location. We were very intrigued as that room design looks very immersive and instantly provided that "eerie" feeling even before playing. We heard great things about "Breakout Waikiki" and their room design and puzzles prior to coming to Hawaii and felt that perhaps "Y2K" may not be the best representation of their rooms. When in on vacation, you have to do an escape room! My cousin recommended this place after doing quite a few of their other rooms. Fun fact: President Obama did an escape room here! We did The Hatch & Cole was our man. We view their informational video on how their escape rooms worked & viewed the introductory video on The Hatch. Coming from San Diego which has quite a few of escape rooms & knowing that Oahu has just a few, I did not have high expectations. But man was I wow'ed! We went as a party of five and completed the runaway train escape room. It said it was 5/10 difficulty. Some parts were easier than 5/10 but a couple of parts were very difficult and we couldn't have gotten by without a clue. Host, Austin was very helpful. Awesome experience but we were fortunate enough to have another pair as part of our two escape rooms and they helped us quickly get acquainted with the process. We may not have enjoyed it without them so as always, your mileage may vary depending who you group with. Secret sabotage was a 9/10 for us, it felt smooth going from one part of the problem solving to the other and the objective felt much more clear. The ambush room was more of a 7/10, and again was more of a great experience because of our group. Doing the 2nd room with two people alone seems to be more frustrating than anything. read more

Breakout Waikiki is the cool new thing to hit hawaii. You actually pay these people good money to lock you in a room. Yes, the fun is in the puzzles and bragging rights to say that you've broken out of each room, but to me, it sounds a little crazy. Oh and they don't actually lock you in.... that would be unsafe. Illegal? Idk. But when you think you're locked in, the adrenaline starts rushing, which obviously makes you think more logically and makes you much more friendly. NOT. You see the worst in people when you're "locked" in a room with them for an hour. Lol jk, friends. But really, I could feel myself become a shittier person as we got down to the last few moments of our hour. I just think it's interesting that personalities are definitely amplified when you're in these situations. I'd like to think I helped a little bit, but it was honestly a shit show and we weren't able to break out :( but we did drink after, so yay. There are several rooms to breakout from. I'd suggest not bragging about breaking out of other rooms, because I feel like they get tougher on you if you do. They have to maintain that low breakout percentage somehow. If you're looking for something to do, to bond over and to experience your friends' true colors, come do breakout Waikiki. When I was first invited to try this place out I was a little skeptical ... be locked in a room and find clues to get out? Hmmmm... A group of six of us tried "The Hatch". Our assistant Sarah was super nice and answered all of our questions with a smile. She made it seem like we were her first group of the day and she wanted us to succeed!!! Yay!!! You have one hour to find the clues to "breakout" of the room. One hour...PLENTY of time right?! OMG - the first time I looked up at the clock we were down to 18 minutes left...where did the time go???!!! The hardest part about this was getting started! What are we looking for? It is kind of a sensory overload - there's so many things to look at, I felt like we would miss something. As time passed, we got into a rhythm - and while it felt chaotic, everyone had a purpose. We all worked together well - if one person was trying something, the others were trying to do something else. I feel like 6 people is the perfect group. You don't feel crowded, there's enough hands to keep the tasks moving, enough brains as well to help solve problems. Towards the end of the hour it started getting warm in the room - so anything more than 6 people would warm the room up even faster. The best part...WE BROKE OUT!!! And set a weekly record for the room - 54:58. The adrenaline rush after completing all the tasks was incredible!! I felt like I was on top of the world for at least the next half hour. Whether you are successful in breaking out or not, you take a group picture - and the worker will also offer to take a picture or two with your phones. They sell shirts, but you can only purchase if you breakout. I thought that was a pretty cool idea!!! I WILL be back!!! read more

I must admit this was more fun than I thought. I booked this place for a department team building event. It was between this or a luau and this won by popular vote! Booking was a bit of a challenge. Email responses vary so I called to book it and was placed on hold for the longest time. Little do I know I still had to book it online but they blocked the room for us. I explained that I was waiting for email confirmation and didn't get a response. We had a group of 16 and we had to split up into two groups with 15 min differences between each room. The location can be confusing as we wandered around kings village and ended up in the wrong place. But the games was more fun than I thought it would be. It was challenging and I admit I was there for decoration cause I just don't get these puzzles. But the group bonding was quite fun. I don't know if I'd do it again on my own cause I'm terrible at these things. But the experience here was good. They even helped guide you along if you're stuck. read more

For someone who grew up in the 90s as a young adult it was a bit nostalgic. The room had surprises along the way and it was a lot of fun. Kids had a blast!! We had three 13 year olds, paid extra to have a private room. The new location was easy to find, parking is the street after Breakout, turn left and parking is on left. Arrived early and they let kids start early. Clean and cool inside. We chose the easiest room and they ended up being literally 10 seconds short on time but still had tons of fun. Bought a GC during their Father's Day sale, looking forward to taking the whole family. Also went to the old location as a team building for work. So our staff needed and break from overwhelming work on a daily basis. We all decided to try out this place to build more workmanship and to test our communication to get away from all this. We had two groups since their were 14 of us. We did the Y2K and Patient 57. Well, it was a really team building. Everyone help each other to find clues and solve the mission. It was perfect breakout to show our communication and teamwork as a team. This place is great place to test your skills and work as a group. Highly recommend for everyone needing a team building workshop or just for fun. Great for everybody. The location we did was in Beachwalk by Lewers. There is a price per person or group. My coworkers and I tried this place in August of 2017. I tried to prepare by watching youtube videos about escape rooms. For those who've never done a breakout/escape room, you and your teammates are locked in a room and must breakout of the room by solving puzzles and using clues. While you are locked in, you are allowed to leave if you need to go to the bathroom or are claustrophobic and can't handle being in a room. The more people you have, the better, since you'll need all of your brainpower to get out. To be honest, the one person in our team who had done breakout rooms before did 75% of the thinking and solving and the rest of us (okay, maybe just me) wandered around in a panicked state. It's a lot of fun. Sadly, we didn't break out in time. You will have a fast-paced, exciting time whether you break out or not. I enjoyed the mental challenge and team building aspect. You need good spatial relations skills, need to be able to put clues from different locations together, and need to get people with different skills to focus on what they do best. The room we tried is supposed to be one of the most challenging. This helps me rationalize the fact that we didn't break out in time. I'm ready for round 2! read more

I will start off with niceties... the staff are really sweet and accommodating to patrons. There are also a couple nice mechanical features to this room that ppl will appreciate. Overall it was absolutely horrible. I started hating my experience about 30min in. Do not do the Y2K room. It is offensive to true Escape Room junkies. It is inundated with time-consuming puzzles that don't leave you with the accomplished, "I did it" feeling for solving them, rather it is akin to your brain being clocked in to a boring 8-5pm job making minimum wage at the going rate in 2000. It has plenty of "red herrings" that are clearly red herrings after you sit & contemplate life as you have no idea what the game creator intended. It also requires good eyesight & good hearing to solve certain sections that of which my almost advanced maternal age self does not have. Without divulging their secrets I will say that one solution while it introduces a new room is exceptionally frustrating because it breaks normal rules of refraining from touching things you are not supposed to touch. Multiple 4-digit combos, no clear linear process, & hidden items that if not found you are screwed... we couldn't find one tiny item that led to us wasting 11 minutes. I'm shocked by the number of 5 star reviews & I have come to the conclusion that the majority of those who gave it 5 stars have most likely not done escape rooms before. When first being introduced to the genre the concept of escaping is thrilling & I would have been content with this establishment if it had been my first room. A group of 7 before us looked defeated after they sulked out of the room. They too failed. I failed with a group of 4, 2 of us being seasoned Escape Room junkies & 1 of us with a previous 100% success rate. This place was nothing but fun! I've done other escape rooms in Hawaii and this was the best! If you've never done an escape room before, Breakout Waikiki is the best place to have your first. I did Armory Ambush last summer with four friends. It is a tough one (I stupidly chose the hardest game). We didn't win, but that didn't ruin our fun. Other escape rooms require at least three people for most of their games. Thankfully Breakout Waikiki's games only require two, which makes this a great date venue (it doesn't hurt that it's surrounded by great restaurants too). I'll be back again soon! read more

I've done quite a few of the rooms here ( Room 13, Y2K & Oceanside Casino) and everytime I finished a room I come out thinking there is no way they can top this, and then BOOM they do it! Initially introduced to me by my girlfriend, I can now openly admit that I am hooked! I've done other rooms around the island and others around the country but with respect to them, breakout rooms will always be the ones I have the most fun completing. Each room has its on theme (as of Jan '17 there are 6 rooms) and you would think that with all these rooms, the quality would dip but they don't. Each room has its own sets and challenges that you just keep coming back for more. Staff here is very friendly and super helpful. You are given three clues so make sure they count. Your game host isn't in the room but is with you for the whole game so don't feel alone. If you decide to reserve a room here make sure to look around for deals/packages (one was upon completion a free shirt for each person in your party) also there is a parking garage under King's village and validate for $6. The staff is excellent, the game masters make it fun, and their rooms are high quality. The puzzles are good and challenging without being overly frustrating and it takes a good team to get out in the 60 minutes. I know they are currently moving from their location at King's Village to a new location near Beachwalk. Warning to experienced escape room goers: the room that I did (Mission Moana) was an incomprehensible mess. Though the staff was friendly, so that's something. I live in Los Angeles and have done escape rooms in several areas around the country. This was among the worst rooms I've done, unfortunately. I could complain about a bunch of things, but here are the highlights for escape room veterans... first, the puzzles don't lead from one thing to another. Example (spoiler alert?): the first lock is unlocked by randomly finding a four-digit code hidden in the room and trying it on several locks until one of them opens. That's not design. That's random. And it kept happening. Many times we found combinations and had to try them on multiple locks. There was no path, no direction, no intuitive reason why I should choose one lock over another... you have the code? You have to try all eight locks. This type of brute force method is simply poor design. Second, multiple things were broken in the room. I have NEVER experienced this before. First, one item didn't have the batteries. So we figured that finding batteries was part of the room. Once they realized what was going on, they brought batteries in. Okay. Then we put them in and they were dead. So we had a second round of batteries. Then it worked. Next, another item has a specific type of light bulb that died after several minutes of turning it on. They had a backup and came in and replaced it, but still... this was really lame. Lastly, the story is incomprehensible. We're spies. In a farmers market. Why? Literally in the video someone says "we're not going to tell you what your mission is..." and guess what... you never find out. It's ridiculous. It's a very poor and thin veil to just put you in a room and have you escape. So we're in a farmers market and we're spies and literally nothing makes logical sense and why are spies having to figure out how much fruit weighs? After we finished the room they informed us that they're moving to a new venue at the end of the year and "it's awesome you guys did this room because we're not bringing it to our new location." No kidding. It's bad enough that even THEY realize it and aren't going to bring it. Great. They should have shut this room down. The problem with having a room this bad is that I will absolutely not be trying their other rooms. I can't fathom why the reviews are so high here. All I can think is that there isn't much competition in Oahu for quality escape rooms and most people are probably doing this for the first time and have no reference. That, or their other rooms are brilliant and this one was absolutely terrible. That is hard to believe, though. Would not recommend. read more

Thank you Aggie for setting up this UYE at BREAKOUT WAIKIKI. I was so excited to try Breakout Waikiki that I arrived in Waikiki around 3:30pm. Had some time to kill then decided to wait by the steps in front of the establishment around 4:30pm. Slowly everyone shows up...Luis, Aggie and her four guests, Jay (Jam), then Mel and Mog. A total of 10 individuals. Before entering the establishment a small bag was passed around to each player. Each bag had either a moon or a star on it. The moons are the Good Guys. The stars are the Bad Guys. Each bag consisted of a mustache, airheads, and a piece of a puzzle that would determine which room the players would BREAKOUT. Two rooms reserved: The Hatch and Mission Manoa. Two teams of five. First team started at 5:15pm and the second team started at 5:30pm. I was with the Good Guys trying to BREAKOUT of Mission Manoa. Each team had 60 minutes to BREAKOUT. Did we accomplish the mission? If given 20 more seconds we would have accomplished in breaking out of Mission Manoa. Sad to say The Good Guys Lost Today. I'm visiting Waikiki on vacation with a group of veteran escape room friends, and were delighted to see that our hotel was right above Breakout. We escaped from both Armory Ambush and Patient 57 a couple of days after. Tech: There are a lot of the classic combination lock mechanisms in these rooms. A bit outdated in that regard, but doesn't detract from the fun! AA had a bunch of unique mechanical puzzles, but they were not all foolproof because we managed to find a way to jam one of them and rendered it unsolvable. Luckily we communicated this with our GM Alex and he offered us a workaround. Unlike AA, there were very few mechanically interesting components in Patient 57. Moreover, the most technically interesting puzzle in Patient 57 was unfortunately not reset properly prior to our game time. Not only did we not get to play through that puzzle, but we also had to waste time figuring out how to get it to "work", since nothing we did could trigger any response. Puzzle quality: Both offered a large selection of puzzles, but those of Armory Ambush were definitely more challenging and immersive. Patient 57 also featured many red herrings designed to, as the GM said, "throw us off." I'm of the opinion that red herrings designed solely to waste our time detract from the overall experience of the room. Game masters: Both GMs were kind and helpful. Alex, with whom we played Armory Ambush, was absolutely amazing. He was passionate, friendly, and came in to chat with us to discuss the puzzles afterwards-- one of my favorite parts of the escape room experience. We had a less than stellar experience with our GM for Patient 57. He must have had a long day, but we could all tell he wanted us out of there. After the game, we asked if he could reset the aforementioned puzzle properly so we could at least try out the mechanics of it. He swiftly told us no and had us leave. Fair enough, but it left a bit of a sour taste in our mouths. We were planning to book to play the Y2K room (Breakout offers a great deal where if you book another room before you leave, you get a 20% discount), but we didn't have a good enough experience with Patient 57 to proceed. read more

Okay, so first off, parking.... We decided to park in the Kings village pkg lot. Parking ticket got validated at breakout Waikiki and I only ended up paying $6 for breakout Waikiki to validate!! If you drive a really big car, parking could be hard to find. A friend who came, had to leave because he could not clear the top of his truck in the parking structures! Oh yeah, I booked my reservations on line because it's the only way to make reservations. They don't take reservations over the phone. So in order to get the day n time slot you want, you should book the room as soon as possible. Okay, so now finding this place, it is actually a little hole in the wall on prince Edward street even though the address says kaiulani ave. Now, about breakout Waikiki.... It was so fun! We had a group of 7 ( originally was supposed to be 8) and was lead into a room where the worker ran us down on the rules. We watched a short video that builds up the story of the themed room before getting started. After the video, the clock starts counting down!!! You have 60 minutes to solve the clues that they give you to breakout!! We had a few bumps in the road and some clues that took us way longer than others but still never made it out!!! Im a gamer, whether it be Jenga, chess, twister, video games or Breakout Waikiki. I read about this type of puzzle game in the mainland and have a couple bookmarked. Now there is no need to visit the mainland to have this super fun experience. With out giving out too much info to spoil it for others, Breakout Waikiki is a real life puzzle game, in which you are locked into a room and you need to find clues and figure out various puzzles and codes to get out of the room. There are currently 3 different themed rooms. You have 60 minutes to find your way out. You are constantly monitored by the employees and they will give you free clues on a monitor in the room. You also have 3 clues you may call out for if you get stuck. MacGregor and his crew are awesome and very hospitable. I can't wait to try out the other rooms. I am determined to get out and break a record! All to rooms are under a 30% success rate, so do not take it lightly (if you are competitive). I highly recommend this game with a group of at least 4-8 friends. IT IS SO FUN! Tips: WORK FAST and use your clues quickly if needed. Do you want to feel like a secret agent? Well this is probably the closest experience you'll have! Breakout Waikiki has multiple rooms to choose from ranging different missions. Be aware that some rooms have a higher break out rate compared to others. Basically you'll be "locked" in a room for one hour and you'll need to solve puzzles, riddles, and more. Keep in mind there are cameras in the room where employees watch you for clue purposes. Each room can have up to 8 participants so be prepared to work as a team.Communication is the key. When booking, make sure you reserve early because the demand is high. My friends and I decided to try the mission manoa room. For parking, we didn't want to pay for the validation fee for Kings Alley and also on that night, Kalakaua Ave. was closed so we parked at the zoo. We came early and was greeted by an employee, I forgot her name but she was really friendly. Can't tell you much about the room but there's a lot of puzzles, codes, and locks! You also receive three clues so if you need one just yell it out and the clue will be on the screen in the room. Just like the other reviews, once you think you are almost done there's so much more! Unfortunately after one hour, we didn't breakout. The 60 minute was full of stress, anxiety, yelling, freaking out, laughing, making fun, and more. It was literally a roller coaster ride of emotions! Each puzzle that was completed was a big accomplishment in itself. I was impressed on how intricate the room was. Whoever made the designs of the room and the puzzles in general is a genius! Despite not breaking out, it was a great experience! Though there are clues everywhere in the room, do NOT use the fire extinguisher!!!!!!!!! Apparently the room next to us used it because they thought it was a clue! It's NOT! Note to self if you're a local make sure when booking to ask for the kamaaina rate which is about 15% off. read more

I won't spoil it for any of you. Aggie hooked up this excellent event and at the same time I was surprised to find out that this was her first UYE. She did an awesome job with the goodie bags and the hilarious puzzle of her face we had to put together to get a clue. See what I did there...... She also included Air heads in the bags, not sure what she was trying to say but........:-) A bunch of us gathered together (Jeana, Aggie, Jam, Ava and myself vs. Team Bad Guys Mel, Mog, Chris, Anthony and Anevay). It was a tough battle between the forces of good and evil but no one came out the victor today. I was disappointed, as I was waiting for Mel to hand me my drink. If you're looking for something fun and new to do with your friends, then I highly suggest checking out Breakout Waikiki! The concept of the game is to figure out all the clues that leads you to the 4-digit number that will help you breakout of your room within a 1-hour span. Breakout Waikiki is located in Waikiki at King's Village on Kaiulani Avenue. It's on the same side as KFC, along Prince Edward Street. They currently have 3 different rooms with 3 different background stories: Room 13 (27% success rate), The Hatch (18% success rate) and Mission Manoa (21% success rate). A fourth room is in the works and will be coming soon (Ala Moana Stock Exchange). *Online reservations ONLY. Knowing how popular this place has been, I made sure to make reservations online at least 2 weeks prior, but still, the times we wanted were already booked. So we settled for the 5pm slot for Room 13, which was the perfect motivation to breakout in time and then get food afterwards lol. TIP: they give 15% for kama'aina. You just gotta call them to find out the code for when you're making your reservations. Depending on how many people you have, the price range can go from $28-$40/person. There's a minimum of 2 players and maximum of 8 players. If you have more people to add on after you make your reservation, just let the worker know when you're checking in, and they can easily add them to your group. Parking: As stated on their website, they don't have a parking garage. Street parking is highly recommended and they also have a map on their website on where the street parking is available along with other parking garage and their rates. Suggestion: We made dinner reservations at Tanaka of Tokyo at the OHANA Waikiki East Hotel after our Breakout session so we could park at that hotel's parking garage and get validated at dinner. Check-in: Games start on time. So make sure you aim to get there at least 15mins early. When you check-in, they have you sign-in on their tablets where you enter your name and email address. They have 2 tablets to make the sign-in process a bit quicker. After you're all set-up, they walk you into your room and go over the instructions and rules. No cell phones and pictures are allowed. And all bags and large items go into their bin that's located inside the room, but know there's cameras in the room, so you can't cheat. After you watch the video that goes over the story behind the room and your mission, the time clock starts. Game: The guy who got us acquainted with the housekeeping rules was also the guy who would help us if we got stuck. You are allowed 3 free clues to ask and any other clues after that just added 3 more minutes to your final time. All you have to do is speak out loud that you need a clue, and on the same TV you watched the video, they will type out your clue. So be wise on the clues you ask. Sometimes I wonder how hilarious it is for the person monitoring the room when they see us over-looking clues that are literally right in front of our faces haha. I don't want to give away anything else, but the least I can say is it's not scary. You won't find dead bodies or scary people popping out of dark areas LOL. Spread out and search for different clues (hint: everything in that room is a clue!) After the Game: If you successfully breakout of your room, they write your time on a white board (and anything else you request to write) and take a picture with your group which then gets added to their wall-of-fame. You also get to purchase their Breakout shirt...not sure how much it costs since we decided not to purchase it. Fail to breakout, then you get added to their wall-of-shame lol. They also take pictures with your cameras which was very nice of them. You can also find your group's picture on their Facebook page too :) For my friend's 30th birthday, I wanted to plan something special for her milestone birthday. Everyone who has attempted to breakout has successfully kept it a secret to what actually happens when you're locked in your room so they don't ruin the experience for you; therefore, we were deathly afraid of the unexpected and possible failure of not breaking out in time. But to our luck, the 6 of us were able to work together and breakout of Room 13 under 47 mins :) It wasn't easy as some of the clues made no sense to us at the time, but it was a very fun experience and every time we figured out a clue it was very gratifying! Breakout Waikiki is a fun experience for a group of friends or with co-workers for team-building. I've gone twice and tried two rooms so far. Once successful; the other time, just missed by a few minutes. The entrance to the facilities are on the backside of King's Village if you're headed from Kalakaua Ave direction. Like many of the other reviews have mentioned, you are locked in a room. You are forced to work with your group to find clues, follow trails, solve puzzles/riddles and work together to successfully escape the room. You have one hour. The room designs are supposedly changed every few months, so you can always head back for a new challenge. I found the rooms to be a lot of fun, particularly The Hatch. Parking is a pain. You can try your luck at street parking or walk from the Zoo. You could also try parking at Royal Hawaiian Shopping center, but they have a time limit of 4 hours before the validation runs out. It's very expensive for what you get. When I went with 4 people, it averaged to around $37. When I went with 8 people, it was around $32. I would love to try all the rooms without breaking the bank. Hopefully, they will be able to lower their costs at their new location (yup, I heard they're tearing down King's Village, so Breakout has to move elsewhere.) Overall, I would recommend trying Breakout for the experience OR if you are looking for a good team-building exercise. read more

I had crinkled my nose everytime someone mentioned Breakout. Stuck in a room and solving puzzles to get out? I don't know about you, but I like to give my brain a rest when I'm not working. But I finally gave in and I am so glad that I did. It was so much fun! Our group had 9; just one over the max of 8 so we had to book two rooms. Booking on line was simple and I called to get the promo code for kamaaina. It was also easy to add more people to the room once we got there. We parked at the zoo and walked over because the King's Village parking lot closes at midnight and our room was at 11:15pm. The person who checked us in and Emily, who ran our room, were both awesome and super friendly. My group broke out of room 13, but it was challenging. There was one point when I felt defeated, but don't give up! Don't hold on to your clues for too long because you can't randomly just break out. You'll need to go through all the steps. I can see why everyone loves it so much. It's not like anything else and I loved the camraderie! read more

We returned after having a good experience here a few years ago. The staff was friendly but seemed unorganized. We checked in and paid then waited in the lobby. Another staff member came out to greet us. They asked what room we were doing and then asked for payment. We let them know we had already paid and they explained that the online card was only for holding the reservation. We said again that we had just paid the first employee a few minutes earlier. They were able to confirm. During the room we had to stop twice. Once we had to leave the room completely because a puzzle had not been reset correctly. On another puzzle we had to ask our host to for clues and then he came into the room and let us know that an essential piece was missing which was why we couldn't retrieve a key. Both times they did stop our clock. Our kids had fun but having to stop twice took away from the story and spoiled at least one of the puzzles as we opened a container that was supposed to be locked and accessed later in the game. We had to redo that section that we already saw. Overall, it was disappointing to have 2 puzzles not work correctly and I wish we had asked to do a different room. read more

For Kama'aina and Military: Before you book, call them for and ask for a promo code. You get a discount on your booking. Parking is in King's Village Shopping Center, the street behind where Breakout is located on Kaiulani Avenue. It's a small and somewhat tight garage, therefore I wouldn't suggest driving low or lifted vehicles. When you park, let the attendant know where you are going and they'll give you a paper tag to place in your car and the ticket to validate at Breakout Waikīkī. DO NOT forget to validate, parking with validation is $6, regular parking is $15. Finding the place: if you walk out of the garage you can either cut through the shopping center or go around to the other side of the building, you'll see the white sign pointing to Breakout. The two newer rooms are located upstairs but our group went to the front, signed-in, and were escorted up. Breakout Waikīkī never disappoints! After my initial review and literally within weeks, I managed to conquer Ala Moana Stock Exchange with my family, which means we did three of the four original rooms. When we heard that there was talks of adding on new rooms we were beyond excited and couldn't wait. Of course, when Breakout released Y2K and Oceanside Casino, our group had to take the challenge. So, last night, we decided to tackle Oceanside Casino... so much fun and the room was awesome! STEVE is the best, hands down! He is energetic, funny, helpful, and wants to see every group succeed. He's been our room runner for all of the rooms we've done and each time only gets better because of him. Tip: Ask for Steve! read more

Do this!!! Any age group will have fun! My group missed the Hatch by 30 seconds. I can't tell you how or why we didn't make it, but if I could go back in time I totally would have gotten it. I plan to be back to do the other two rooms. Parking: It sucks, it's Waikiki. There are garages nearby but if you're down for walking there's free parking near the zoo at least on weekends. Clothing: Wear clothing you can sweat in. It's nerve racking. Bathroom breaks: There are none, there is a bathroom there. Food: Eat something before hand, hunger causes you to lose focus! Escape rooms in Hawaii! Basically as everyone else has said you have 60 minutes to find clues to break out of the room. Currently there are 3 different themed rooms. The Hatch had the lowest success rate so naturally we had to choose it. (Owned it heheh) Parking: there is a map on the website of suggested parking places and their prices. However we parked at the royal hawaiian and just ate there after for the validation. Reservations: able to book from the website and i believe it is mandatory. A few days in advance should be enough for you to get the time and room you want. Price: Cost ranges from 28-40ish dollars per person depending on your group size with larger groups being cheaper. We went with 8 but i definitely recommend going with at least 4-5 if you want a shot at the leaderboard. Fun: amazing! If you are into puzzles and played video games the majority of your life like us you will definitely enjoy this!! The staff are very friendly and provide hints throughout the game if they see you have no idea what you are doing. However, take too many hints and you will start having to pay with time. Overall great experience unlike anything else in hawaii at the moment. i highly suggest you try at least once. read more

Went in with my team from work. I've never done anything like this before, wasn't sure what to expect, and thought it would be interested at the least. Let me just say this was the most fun I've had in a very long time. We did Patient 57, which was the easiest (6/10 difficulty). 60 minutes to escape the room. 3 hints available. Unlock everything to get the codes to escape. This was perfect. Difficult enough to get me thinking but not too difficult that we couldn't figure anything out. Basically everything revolves around codes, phones, keys, and combination locks. Everything and anything can be relevant. Almost everything in the room is there for a reason. It's a progression from one code/lock/thing opened to the next until you get the code to leave the room. We finished with 23 seconds left. Unreal. Patient 57 currently has a 33% escape rate. read more

Don't want to give too much away... other than you're locked in a room, and you must escape. And in order to do that, you need to find clues that will help you find more clues and then you somehow make sense of those clues so that you can exit through the same door you came in.
