I was never one for escape rooms, but I've come to realize it's the people you bring that makes the experience. I've done the Depths and Timeliner and they were both a ton of fun, especially since I was basically a different person for both experiences. For the Depths I went in with a close group of friends and their goal was as fast as possible, no hints, and the most intense about solving; while I on the other hand felt I would just be in the way so I stood happily to the side drinking my energy drink. Also, can you imagine trying to solve these things while inebriated? Wild. Timeliner was a different story considering I went in with my family whose goal was to solve it by any means necessary, so we took a few hints. But I felt like I had to contribute a little more and I had a little more room to breathe and contribute without being in anyone's way. This made me realize, I actually do love escape rooms! And it's not to say I didn't have fun in the Depths, I just gotta know where I stand LOL. Something I will say is that since I had an 11 month old, I knew that it just wouldn't make sense for me to pay to play, but I would be too worried about my baby to contribute or even enjoy it - so definitely get a baby sitter, especially if you feel that the kids won't really enjoy it. Although, I would bring my baby to GBGS (with earmuffs) which was the original plan but that got booked before we could book it. read more

Located near Target, we celebrated a family member's birthday here with not one but TWO escape rooms. Surprisingly, photos are allowed, but I was too involved with trying to escape that I did not take any photos. Inside the rooms, there were clever clues to solve even one involving a BB gun to shoot targets to get clues when the target fell! Of course we had to try one of the hardest rooms, "Prison Break" which we almost didn't escape, but our host was great at helping us solve the puzzles. As someone who has done too many escape rooms to count, I'd rank The Escape Game squarely in the middle of the pack. It's the kind of experience you would expect from a company that boasts locations at major malls across the country--accessible to all with standardized rooms with good (but not amazing) puzzles and tech. We completed "Special Ops: Mysterious Market," which places players in a Middle Eastern bazaar on a mission to infiltrate a criminal mastermind's lair. Think Indiana Jones meets Mission Impossible. The room had good production design with a healthy mix of analog and technical puzzles. However, our group of 4 people--2 experienced and 2 newbies-- found the number of puzzles a little underwhelming. I couldn't imagine doing the room with more than 4 adults, as there were simply not enough activities to keep us all occupied at the same time. Additionally, for a room that was rated 8 out of 10 in terms of difficulty, we did not think "Special Ops" was particularly challenging, especially given that it's supposed to be one of the more difficult rooms (tied with "The Heist" behind "Prison Break"). But YMMV depending on your experience and familiarity with escape rooms. Finally, as with most escape rooms, the overarching narrative falls apart if you scrutinize the twists too much. Despite these quibbles, the whole experience was still a fun afternoon diversion! We thought that the staff--from the front desk attendants to the game master--at The Escape Game were excellent. These were some of the most friendly and welcoming folks we've encountered at escape rooms in Hawaii and beyond. We particularly appreciated how the game master allowed us to customize the way we would like hints delivered--no helpful hints or nudges in the right direction without group consensus. We've found that some game masters can be overzealous in their attempts to be helpful, and this ruins the experience for all. So, having someone modify their system to fit our needs was unexpected yet welcome. One minor thing that could be improved is the process for requesting the kama'aina discount for online bookings. Currently, you show your Hawaii ID when checking in for the game, with an assurance from staff that you should be refunded to the credit card on file within 7-10 business days. I'm sorry to report that I never received the refund months after completing our room. It's not the biggest loss, but it does give me pause about doing further rooms, especially given the high price for games ($46 per person) that are not inherently private. read more

This has to be the funnest escape rooms that we have done!! so far we just have one more to do. We did two in Las Vegas and four here. So fun that we started in Las Vegas in January... it's April and we have 1 more till we have done them all. The staff here are so fun, energetic, and the location is perfect at Ala Moana. It's on the target end of the mall. Parking is easy. While Parking is at Ala moana depending on what time you go. The rooms are so fun and we made- such good effects. I like that the clues are endless however as a family, we try not to use the clues. We make it a thing that we "agree" if we're going to use a clue The past few rooms that we have done we had SUR as our guide... if that's what you call them. He was the one who would give us a clue.... Or on my behalf, he would be the one telling me not to do something. (add big giggle here.) read more

Watch your pants! On 6/28, my friend (an employee at another location) and I attended the 11:00 p.m. Playground game. After we completed the puzzle to unlock the slide, I went down first, and the slide immediately ripped my jeans wide open. My friend followed right behind me, and her soft cotton pants snagged too. Neither of us had buttons, jewelry, or anything else on the back of our clothing that could have caused that. The game guide offered that we could leave the game only after hearing me say I just wanted to leave. But did not speaker in for any assistance. While my friend finished the game, I was stuck standing in a dark corner with the back of my jeans torn open. I was incredibly uncomfortable and did not know what to do. When we finished, The game guide only offered an apology and when we asked if this had happened before, he casually said, "Yes, a few times." This was not the souvenir we had asked for. Thankfully we had already paid for t-shirts so at least I had something to cover the gaping hole in the back of my jeans. I understand the store was closing for the night, but it was a very uncomfortable experience. Management needs to take action for staff training on sensitivity. And franchise owners need to put money into equipment repairs, as it could have dug into our skin. We were really disappointed, especially since we are visiting from out of state. read more

The Great Escape Game at Ala Moana Center was so much fun! Our group of eight ranged in age from 12 to 79, and everyone had a great time working together to escape the Gold Rush room. We only needed two clues and escaped with just under seven minutes left on the clock, which made it even more exciting! The escape game is SO FUN! I've done 5 of the 7 rooms available so far, and I love that the rooms have all had storylines and clear themes. Plus, the game masters have such good energy and are ready to give clues throughout the experience if needed. If you like puzzles, you'll love these escape rooms! They offer 20% off game tickets/gift cards after finishing a room that can be used for the next escape experience, which I think is nice since it can get pretty costly to do these rooms at $45.99 a person. The only reservation I have with these escape rooms is that these are not guaranteed private experiences. There are a set number of people that can sign up to do each time slot of each room, so if your group has less than the maximum number of people, other people can sign up for the same room and join your group. This could be a super fun way to meet new people, but it's also a risk since you don't know who you might end up sharing this experience with. read more

We escaped. Happy it had three rooms. Time travel aspect was fun. It was relatively easy and the guide was excellent.

This was the first time I did an escape room! Booking the time slots were easy to do online or over the phone. It is $45/person, but if you're kama'aina, you get a little discount. Just ask, present your ID and they'll assist you with a refund. There are waivers to sign so I recommend to complete it beforehand on the website. If not, they have available tablets there to do them. We chose to do the most difficult room 9/10, Prison Break. We had 7 people in our group (max 8 for the room) and we split into 2 groups, for cell 1 and cell 2. Our room moderator was Joseph and he had awesome energy. He quickly gave us the rules so we could get started. For one whole hour, he was a great help, giving us hints when we needed it the most. I don't want to spoil anything for Prison Break, but you will need very good communication at first in the separate cells. When we get through the first room, we come together and solve the rest as a group. We successfully escaped with only 5 minutes remaining! I highly recommend to try it out. I had a blast. We will return to try the other rooms as well. read more

I had so much fun at this escape room. I get so ungodly hot when I do escape rooms. I have no idea why. It's kind of like when you go under a desk to plug stuff in. I just get hot. We did the prison escape which was interesting. It was only three of us, we needed a bunch of hints, and we barely finished with 3-4 min remaining. There are a few moments where it's absurdly odd (chess pieces) and there's a lot of cues that the DM watches for. Overall it's a cute spot in Ala Moana, it was clean, I had a lot of fun and would go again to a different puzzle. read more

These guys are top notch! Made reservations & paid online. I had 4 minors planning to do the Train game on their own, signed & submitted waivers. Because each game can hold up to 8 players, there were 4 more spots open for their game. 2 adults reserved spots. When my kids went to play, due to the adults that had signed up they needed their own adult present for safety factors. I questioned it but appreciated it. They allowed me to attend the game without paying & to be there to observe. My kids enjoyed this one! Everyone worked well together & o my needed to ask the game master for one hint. Super cool game! At this point I've done 6 of their 7 escape rooms, so you could say I'm a fan. Quality rooms, interesting puzzles (beyond just "find the four-digit code" over and over), surprising twists, high-quality props and staging. The unlimited hints have come in handy a number of times! Gold Rush remains the fam favorite, for spoiler reasons I won't get into here, followed by Art Heist and Playground (so great that they have an escape experience for a bigger group!) We did Special Ops yesterday, which was challenging with four kids...let's just say they hit that hint button more than once. The staff is always incredible - helpful, patient, funny, engaged - and always goes above and beyond with all their customer interactions. read more

UPDATE: Our previous bad experience was definitely a one off mistake and hopefully it was a good learning experience for The Escape Game. The assistant manger handled the situation quickly and beautifully. Eddie gave us a call and email immediately to try to get in contact with us. When we were finally able to connect he was so sincere in his apologies, he had reviewed footage and spoke with his team, and really just went above and beyond to ensure everything was covered. Eddie made some arrangements for us to have a "redo" experience and we had a phenomenal time. We are really grateful for the care and consideration that went into remedying the situation. All in all, we would highly recommend playing with them. We have always had an amazing time before this one off situation. They really do have some of the best escape rooms and proven wonderful customer service. Don't be afraid to reach out if you have any type of feedback because they're very open to receiving it which is difficult to find these days! read more
