This review is both for their food/service but also inside dining/takeout experience. One was great, and the other not so much. This place is pretty large compared to other boba and dessert spots. That makes it hard to enforce social distancing within the store. They have one main pastry display in the middle. They don't allow self serve, but with only one person tending to all the guests, it gets crowded. Everyone was huddled against the display to look at the options while trying to flag down the server. Then you have the check out line. It was unorganized. You had people walking in waiting in line to put in an order, and then you had people walking up to check out the pastries they picked out. No one knew which line to go into and who was next. We were all hovered around the cashier and looking at each other as she called out "next". And I get it - I am sure they are trying their best. That's why I give them 4 stars. I hope this way of operating is only temporary! The food was great. I got the Durian, Earl Grey, and Matcha crepe. Fun, delicious, and not too sweet. They were light and airy as well. The earl grey cake was the fan favorite. The matcha a bit too bitter so we will pass next time. They have a lot of unique flavors and more options than h-mart's pastry section. Great date night location for a quick and sweet meal. They get a lot of brownie points for their service. They were clearly busy but still polite, helpful, and hardworking - no one standing around doing nothing! I think a lot of the lower ratings on here are because of their lack of service during their opening weekend. Given that they just opened, especially during a pandemic, I understand that their service may be slower with the extra precautions. I stopped by about three weeks after their grand opening, and had a great experience! Being Taiwanese American, I was really excited to hear about a full bakery opening in Cary with the unique and delicious flavors that you don't normally find in American bakeries: matcha, red bean, black sesame, purple sweet potato, durian, and more! There's a sign right when you enter with steps on how to order. First, go to the bakery and cake display and pick out what you want. Then, go to the register to pay for the buns and order any drinks. Then, pick up your drink at the counter. While the sign was useful, it was causing some unnecessary traffic by the door, comprised of people stopping to read the sign, people entering/exiting, and people waiting in the checkout line. Also there's currently no self-serve pastries. Instead, you tell an employee which ones you want and they'll grab it for you. I went on a Saturday afternoon and despite being pretty crowded, there was still a ton of pastries to choose from and I only waited around 5 minutes. In terms of drinks, I've only tried their purple potato matcha milk. I've recently been obsessed with purple sweet potatoes and so far, I've only seen Brecotea and Kung Fu Tea have this flavor in a drink. It's essentially mashed up purple sweet potato with matcha milk or regular milk on top, served with the usual bubble tea toppings. They don't specify that you can customize sugar and ice levels, but I got normal sugar/ice and it was the perfect amount of sweetness. Also don't forget to add boba! I thought the drink was really good, although I do wish that the purple potato was a little bit creamier. I loved all the buns that I got and my parents gave their authentic-Taiwanese stamp of approval. My favorites were the black sesame bun, pork floss/scallion bun, and the cheese/corn bun. Don't sleep on these! The black sesame bun definitely is less sweet than your typical pastry-if you have a sweet tooth, this may not be for you. The pork floss/scallion and cheese/corn buns were delicious, savory, and packed with flavor. Overall, I highly recommend Brecotea for some delicious buns and pastries. Just give them time to get a hang of how the cafe should flow and to work out the kinks! read more

I love that brecotea has a cute interior that reminds me of a korean cafe! Spacious seating, outdoor seating, and a middle area as well. The drinks have real taro and Ube root in them, which can be a toss up for some people- the texture of the potato in the drink is starchy and very distinct. I got the matcha purple potato milk, which if sweeter would have been great. The breads are also very vibrant, a bit more airy then I would like (it's a bit expensive at $3 compared to other places) but the black sesame paste is rich and they don't skimp on the scallion/pork floss in the buns! Brecotea had been on my list of places to try since it's opening, so I was incredibly happy to finally get a chance to check it out yesterday. Like many other reviewers have mentioned, the space is beautiful, bright, and clean. For a Sunday afternoon, the bake case was full, and although the place was busy, there was plenty of available indoor seating. Upon entering, there is a sign explaining their ordering process, which includes information about getting items like bread and pastries from the large bake case or ordering ice cream or other desserts such as cake slices from the cashiers. The drink menu leaves a little bit to be desired because the drinks aren't well explained - I am not sure what a paradise tea is, for instance, or whether the brûlée tea has a caramelized milk cap as I imagine it would. Having frequented many boba shops, I also was surprised that there was no mention of sweetness or ice levels on the menu or by the cashier. Since it was my first time at Brecotea, I decided to keep things simple and go with their standard black milk tea and a caramel custard pastry. Unfortunately, they were out of boba so I opted for green tea jelly, which turned out to be a surprisingly tasty choice (I wasn't sure it would go well with black milk tea). The drink was fantastic, not too sugary at all and very refreshing. I also thought the pastry was deliciously light and flaky without being overly sweet. While I had a really good experience, my husband unfortunately did not. He ordered a passionfruit tea and several pastries. He enjoyed the pastries quite a bit, but he waited over 15 minutes for his drink, long after everyone around us had received theirs. He inquired about it twice but there didn't appear to be any effort to follow up on why it was taking a long time. When he finally received his drink, he found that it wasn't mixed well, so all of the passionfruit flavor was at the top of the drink and all of the seltzer at the bottom, making it a bit unpleasant to drink. Since the cups aren't see-through, it would have been nice if the drink had been shaken more. All in all, I'd be really happy to return. I liked the atmosphere, the drinks, and the variety of pastries. I would like to see a more detailed menu and there is room for improvement with service. read more

They don't give ice cream samples, which I found to be really strange! I ordered the taro milk tea, and it was terrible. It was just milk with a taro paste in the cup. This is my go to drink but it is usually a pretty purple mixed drink. They should've made it into a smoothie if anything. Instead it was chunky and you had to scrape the cup to get any taro flavor. milk tea boba was alright... not my favorite.. they don't offer dairy substitutes for milk tea and i wish they had allergens labeled for the bread but aside from those factors I really liked the decoration and space. The menu is behind the ordering station which was odd to me and the workers weren't the most friendly/helpful. I remember specifically asking one of the helpers at the bread station about the pastries and she looked at me weird and didn't answer my questions. I def want to come back for more pastries and it seems like a nice place to study (hopefully when it's safer). The place is new so there's definitely a lot of kinks to work out but hopefully it becomes better. Very spacious and clean new bubble tea + pastry cafe! I was thoroughly impressed with the interior decor and just how airy everything was inside. Bakeries have potential to be too stuffy due to lack of adequate ventilation, but Brecotea didn't have that issue-yay! I tried the pork floss bun, caramel custard pastry, and bubble brown sugar matcha (iced). All were delicious! I appreciate the cashier asking if I wanted the pastries heated up. I've only been here once. I went here the other night closer towards the end of the night, so it might have something to do with the quality of my drink and pastry. I ordered the matcha paradise drink, and a fruit puff and apple tart. The drink was really disappointing. I expected more of a slush, but it ended being very thick and tasted more like I was drinking heavy cream. The matcha flavor was barely there, and the sheer amount of things in the drink ended up being overwhelming. The fruit puff was alright. The filling wasn't super sweet, and the fruits added a nice contrast to the cream filling, although the filling did leave a film in my mouth. The puff on the outside was a bit underwhelming. I think I wanted it to be crispy, but it ended up being soft and kind of flat in flavor, but the texture is definitely just a personal taste. The apple tart was pretty good. The crust was firm and the tart was not overly sweet. The apple in the tart had a crunchy bite to it, which was great for the overall "mouthfeel." Lastly, the service was definitely lacking. I was only one of maybe 5 people, not including my small group, with at least 4 employees working. I try to be patient and fair when it comes to service, since I used to work in a restaurant, but we ended up waiting nearly 30 minutes for them to make my single drink. My party only ordered and ice cream, these 2 pastries and my drink, so I'm not really sure what took them so long. They also forgot to give me my pastries when they gave me my drink. It was frustrating to me, to see how long it was taking them to make my drink, especially when there was a kiosk for self-ordering and payment. The place was very clean and had a great interior, so the atmosphere itself was pretty fun and cute. I don't like to make judgments based on 1 visit alone, so I'll likely try to come back at some point earlier in the day and order something else, and also update my review. Sigh, where do I begin...hair in the bread and surprise cockroach visits. I usually come in for a quick bread run and head out but today I came in to get some work done. I had to switch seats three times because each time I encountered a nasty roach. This place just seemed like a mess; crumbs and bread pieces on the floor and dirty tables. Worst of all, all the staff were behind the counter standing around and chit-chatting instead of making rounds to sweep and wipe tables. I wish I could say I love this place, but it definitely could've been a better experience. Their breads and drinks are yummy but it just feels like a health code violation at this point. I informed the staff regarding their roach problem and they seemed just as surprised so hopefully they will call an exterminator. Moving from Irvine California, the hub for Asian desserts & boba shops, Brecotea satisfied my 85° Bakery cravings! I've always wondered when there would be an Asian bakery in the Triangle Area and here it is! I went in the morning and they had so many pastries to choose from. My favorite was the pork floss sponge cake and the egg tart. Another plus was that the pastries were still warm! I would recommend going early in the morning. I also tried the Mango Yogurt Tea. Took my boy here on his first day of spring break - we did not regret it! Neither will you. It is set up differently from most coffee shops - there is a sign in front telling you to choose pastries from the kiosk and to order desserts at the counter. It took us awhile to decide what we wanted as everything looked so delicious - we settled on a caramel custard danish, custard bun, and something with chocolate and cream cheese and ordered a chocolate mille crepe. Service was gracious and answered all questions, it's beautifully decorated inside, and they have an outdoor patio which is where we chose to sit. It's not the nicest view - parking lot backed by Kildaire Farm Rd - but you can't have everything. My friend recommended this place to me recently for her favorite boba spot in the Triangle area. High praise from her, so I had to check it out as we passed by. I ordered the Roasted Oolong milk tea. And gosh, such a great decision. This is not a common offering at boba spots, but is so delicious. I would highly recommend for its slightly toasty flavor profile! I loved being able to taste the tea and the boba itself was cooked to a wonderful firmness. I didn't order any of the baked goods there, but I saw some very familiar Taiwanese items that I would also recommend to anyone. A would comment that they are a little expensive, compared to most bakeries, however. Now that I'm reading reviews on the Boba Brown Sugar Cake Shake, I might have to try that.
