This is a must try if you're on the Big Island!! It's just a cooler on the side of the road…read more $4/loaf of the best banana bread you've ever had! You can either drop some cash into the little metal box on the table or use the Venmo code under the lid. We picked up 3 loaves, some apple bananas, and avocados on our first day. Then, we went back near the end of our trip to get a few more! They were sold out, but there's a number to call and the baker's husband brought out a few piping hot loaves of bread. Wow!!! It's even more amazing when it's hot. I do a lot of baking and I make a lot of banana muffins, and even I'm impressed with Jeanette's skill. The bread is perfectly caramelized on the outside, the sprinkle of crushed mac nuts and sugar on top, with the moist interior is just perfect. Our kids were fighting daily at breakfast for the "end pieces", lol! We'll definitely be back someday! Mahalo!

The loaves are topped with a sweet topping containing macnuts that make it unique and better than the rest. It's moist and flavorful, definitely one of the best banana breads I've had while visiting the Hawaiian islands. It's also super affordable at $4 per loaf. You pay via honor system through Venmo. When we arrived around 6:15pm, there were no more loaves in the cooler but there were a few phone numbers with a note posted on the cooler that said to please call if there were no more loaves so they can bring some up :) The owners are super kind and happily brought up some more loaves so we can purchase some. I think they said they filled the cooler with 52 loaves before they left for the day! I don't have a picture of the loaves because we ate them so quickly but just trust me when I say this is a must stop and you won't regret it!

If heaven has a lunch counter overlooking the Pacific, I think I found it…read more The Coffee Shack isn't just about the view (and trust me, the view alone is worth the drive)--it's about everything that comes with it. Let's start with the sandwiches. The Hawaiian bread is absolutely incredible. Soft, slightly sweet, fresh, and honestly the best sandwich bread I've ever had. Every bite made me wonder why every sandwich in the world isn't served on Hawaiian bread. Then came the pizza. Authentic, artisan island flavor with a homemade crust that tasted like it had been infused with fresh rosemary and other garden herbs. The pineapple and ham tasted wonderfully fresh, making the classic Hawaiian pizza feel like it was invented right here. And then there's the balcony. You look out over the emerald-green Kona coffee slopes as they tumble down to the brilliant blue waters of Kealakekua Bay. The Pacific stretches to the horizon, sailboats drift across the bay, and on a clear day you can even spot the Captain Cook Monument across the water. It's the kind of view that makes you forget your phone...at least until you realize you need to take another picture. Come hungry. Stay awhile. Order dessert and another cup of Kona coffee. You'll leave wondering if you came for lunch or for one of the most beautiful dining views in Hawaii. Mahalo, Coffee Shack--you've spoiled me for every sandwich and pizza that follows.

Expect a wait on weekends, but they use an app that lets you track your place in line and alerts you when your table is ready. Don't skip dessert--the coconut cream pie is a favorite. We also loved the macadamia nut scone.
