I wanted a flavored gender reveal cake and we weren't allowed to pick anything flavor of cake other than vanilla, which I can understand for the frosting it's easier to color a vanilla frosting. But cake? Nothing else ? Not even Haupia ? I've baked cakes for years. I wanted another local bakery to do this surprise for us and such a disappointment, clearly over baked and done the day before. This bake shop is attached to a gelato place. There was a small display case of baked goods with a variety of tempting sweets and my dear brother bought almost half of the items that were encased. In the meantime, I ordered 3 specialty drinks: toasted coconut hot chocolate, chocolate chai latte, Mauka Trail mocha (with non-dairy Mac nut milk), and a Kona Coffee & chocolate gelato milk shake. Every beverage was delicious! The young lady, who made them was very sweet, friendly, and soft spoken. The young lady helping my brother with the sweets was also very nice & friendly. The interior was really cute with a section dedicated to keiki (children). There were tables and a seating area with couches and a little gift shop displaying colorful artwork by local artists all illuminated by interesting lighting. We definitely want to return before we leave to try their gelato. But, we will also pick up more desserts because their baked goods were truly scrumptious, which included Lilikoi pie, flourless chocolate cake, a variety of cannolis, cookies, and Ricotta pound cake. I planned a birthday trip to the Big Island coming from Scottsdale, Arizona. I knew I wanted a birthday cake from a local bakery and as soon as I found Kona Sweets' Yelp page, I knew I had to look no further. I emailed Janel about 4 months prior to the trip and she locked me in for a pickup for my bday, January 14th. Bonus that you can pick up from Gypsea Gelato, which provides more flexibility for pickup as Gypsea is open until 9p. I was torn between banana cake and coconut cake, but I knew I wanted the chocolate ganache in the middle. I asked Janel for her recommendation and she recommended the coconut, which I was excited about since I knew it would taste like a Mounds candy bar. YUM! I also asked her for Hawaiian themed decor and to write "Hau'oli La Hanau Chelsea" on the cake ("Happy Birthday Chelsea" in Hawaiian :)). Janel delivered on my request. We picked it up from Gypsea around 7:30p on Saturday. We let it sit in the car while we got dinner and then took it back to the AirBnB to dig in. The cake cuts extremely well and evenly. I could easily see why this would be the ideal wedding cake. My only disappointment was that the cake itself was really dry. I don't personally like cold cake, so I'm not sure if that added to it. It was stuff, dry, but the flavors were there. So I decided to put it in the microwave about 7 seconds and that did the trick. Still not super moist, but definitely more scrumptious. We ended up having some of the leftovers for breakfast the next morning! Would recommend leveraging Kona Sweets for any of your celebratory needs while staying in Kona! I can't believe it took me so long to write this review, it's been about 16 months since our wedding. I didn't get to meet the baker, but Kona Sweets saved my wedding day when my other vendors dropped out. I didn't want to stress anymore, so we asked for a simple, naked-style tiered cake, with alternating layers of vanilla and lemon flavored cake. I did not get to do the tasting so I wasn't sure what the end-product would be like but oh my gosh, it was amazing. The cake, first off, was beautifully done and decorated with fresh flowers that matched our decor perfectly. The cake itself was the best wedding cake I've ever had. I'm not exaggerating since it was my own wedding and everything; it was REALLY good. Usually, I don't care for cake...especially wedding cake, which I feel tends to be dry and artificial tasting. But Kona Sweets' cake was the most tender, flavorful cake I've had. My only regret is that I didn't save the top tier of our cake! We came to Hawaii to get married and vacation with our four boys. If you get married, you have to have cake, right? I found Janel and emailed her a few questions about sizes, flavors and costs associated with the cake. I asked her to make a two layer cake with an eight inch bottom and a five inch top. The bottom was chocolate cake with chocolate ganache filling and the top layer was carrot cake with pineapple and macadamia nuts in the cake and a cream cheese filling. The whole thing was frosted with a blue ombre colored vanilla buttercream with a cascade of shells and orchids. It was not only beautiful, but absolutely delicious as well. The ganache balanced with the chocolate cake perfectly. It wasn't too little or too powerful as some ganache can be. The cake itself was oh, so moist, had great crumb structure and a great flavor. The vanilla buttercream paired up with it like a champ. The carrot cake... oh boy, this was incredible. None of us have ever had such a great cake before. The cake was moist and the differering flavors and textures within it just put it head and shoulders above any other I've ever had. The cream cheese filling was great, not too strong and matched up perfectly with the cake. The vanilla buttercream frosting that surrounded it was a great accompaniment to it. AWFUL EXPERIENCE. purchased our wedding cake here. Worst decision ever. Not only did she get the favors wrong, they gave me the wrong colors. I sent pictures of the colors and how I ordered it to look like. Bright vibrant colors which I asked for, came to us in pastels. They packed it wrong and there was a big slice in the top, luckily we were able to hide it with some roses, but the colors were a disaster.
