This restaurant was recommended by locals and visitors as *the* place to dine in Topsail. Yes, the lines are LONG - but the staff was really accurate on the wait times so we were able to go back to our air bnb for a bit while we waited, and spend time on the dock as well. Once we were seated, we were waiting a while to give our drink orders, but once Gabrielle (?) came around she was incredibly sweet and apologized for the wait. I heard Breezeway served up the best hush puppies in NC...and they do! I'm drooling just thinking about them. We had a big party with some folks to feed at home so we were able to try a huge variety of items from the menu. E V E R Y T H I N G was amazing! It's always a worry that fried dishes will be greasy and that was not the case at all here. The quality of everything we had was perfect, fresh, and well seasoned. I loved the variety of seafood in the captains feast (I think that's what it was called) and the grouper fingers were the standout with our appetizers. I really wanted to like this place. Being from Maryland, I am spoiled by well prepared seafood. This isn't it. They could do so much with this place. Start with a new chef that doesn't specialize in fried food and add outdoor seating. There's too much fresh seafood in these parts to not do it well. Service was great though. read more

A review from a "local". I am always looking for new places to try in our area, and I am a major fan of places with a "view", so I had to try this place. Here are a couple of things that I look for, before trying a place: *Is there outdoor seating: No :( There are a lot of windows and the view of the sound is really nice, but it's indoor seating only. *Do they have draft beer: Sadly, no. Bottle only, but they had a nice selection. *Is the service good: I arrived shortly after they opened (5:00pm), the restaurant filled up quickly, but the service was very good. *How's the food: I can't speak to this very well because I only ordered an appetizer (crab dip) and a beer. The crab dip was not mind blowing. It tasted good, but lacked crab. However the pita points they served with it were fabulous. I also really enjoyed that they serve hush puppies to all the tables. Hour and a half wait to then be rushed by server to finish. Got there at 7:15 home at 9:45. Should not take that long to be seated as food was fairly quick. Grouper tasted fishy and $15 for it on an $8 salad. Loud too loud to carry on a conversation at a round table. read more

Best hush puppies! It's as if the NC State Fair were packaged into glorious little bite-sized spheres. They even sell the mix. We were seated near a window and able to take in a lovely sunset over the water. We used the names of the fish on their paper placemats as inspiration for silly fish jokes all evening. Location is great. There is a dock and a beautiful view right outside the restaurant. There's also a park very close by for kids to play while you wait. The wait to get in seems to usually be a decent while but it's worth it for the food. Just be prepared to wait 20-45 minutes. The service wasn't perfect but it was also very busy. The view outside the window was incredible and only got better the longer we stayed. The hush puppies are THE BEST me and my wife have ever had, they are to die for. Kids loved the Mac and cheese. The shrimp was pretty good too. The "small seafood platter" was great. My shrimp was good, oysters cooked perfectly, crab cake was 9/10, and flounder was good as well. Ordered small flounder platter on 8/8 The fish I was served had absolutely zero taste. It was a dry, hard piece of white fish. Definitely not flounder. When I asked the waitress, who was polite and respectful, what kind of fish it was she said she did not know. The cole slaw was warm and the fries tasted like they were reheated several times. Don't let the outside fool you. My wife and I had dinner one night there while on vacation. My wife had scallops and clam strips. The scallops would melt in your mouth and the clam strips were actual clams not just breading and fried perfectly. I had the Ribeye steak. It looked like a large Filet Mignon It was cooked perfectly (MR) and extremely tender. The Hush puppy's were some of the best I've ever had. While Breezeway has unbeatable sunset views over the sound side of Topsail, it's the standard fried fish fare that's "meh" (at best) that had me dock it a few stars. Our family has been coming to the Breezeway for over 10 years and we were looking forward to their legendary hushpuppies! Maybe it was us building them up in our heads, or the batch we got, but they were a little overly greasy and the crust wasn't as crispy-crunchy. We did ask for some that were a little more "done" but the waiter must have forgotten. Our meals arrived shortly after we ordered them, and everything was fine- though nothing to write home about. The views, however are spectacular! The restaurant is right on the sound and has large windows all around the building. We loved watching the sun set as we ate. We picked food up from here last night while in town for Memorial Day. The food was all really good. Was only like warm by the time we got back home. But not a big deal. The "steamer" was misleading. For $12 you get a 1/2 pound of shrimp but no potatoes or sausage or corn. I thought it would be like a small steam pot. Menu wasn't clear. I wasn't crazy about the she crab soup. Lots of crab in it but the flavor wasn't what I expected or was craving. Everyone said their fried platters were good and the shrimp and grits got two thumbs up from mom. Once we were seated, our server grabbed our drink order and returned for our meal order. Our server was the highlight of the evening. He was very attentive and seemed to possess a positive attitude. An often missing element. The wait for our food was short. I have to say, a large order of fried flounder is large. We also ordered calamari and clam chowder. Overall the food was decent. So made it here as nothing else open down this end of Topsail hoped based on the wait it would be good but sadly it was nothing more than fried food with higher prices and low quality. Vey disappointed. We had shrimp cocktail on wilted lettuce, small shrimp and flavorless cocktail sauce. Went here last night with a group of 16. This place is not fancy, seems like when we called at 5 and asked if they could accommodate our group they should have said yes, or no...but they just insisted that we call ahead to put our name on the "list". When we got there, there was no one else in the lobby, but putting our name on the "list" really didn't get us anywhere. We waited for 2 tables next to one another to clear out - there was no advantage of putting our name down ahead. We arrived at 6 and did not leave until 8. I get that we had a big group, and trust me when I say the waiters were doing EVERYTHING they could to keep us engaged. But we didn't want more hushpuppies, we just wanted our food. By the time we got it, people were so filled up on puppies that it was hard to eat must more. The food was good I guess. I had a salad which was truly the only thing on the menu I can eat. I thought the price point of $8 was a bit rich. The people who ordered the shrimp platters were pleased. I don't know if I would go back. People that arrived far after us were leaving before we got our food. So this place has a lot of reviews that aren't the best. I think they deserve better. We had been here before and had pretty much the same experience as previously. Yes many of the dishes are fried. But you can get them grilled if you ask. For a small up charge. We had to wait but shorter time than they said. Great spot for fried food on the beach, especially the shrimp. Very, very family friendly which was fantastic for my kids that can get antsy at times. Know what you're getting into up front. This ain't date night fare, this is volume dining. There is one, massive, open dining room with seating for 150 or so. It can get loud. Food and service, tho, are both good. You can easily stuff yourself here. We wanted lighter fare and each ordered the salad with fried shrimp on top. I had low expectations - thinking tasteless iceburg lettuce and little else. Instead, it was romaine, some baby spinach, toasted almonds and grape tomatoes. There were maybe ten good sized shrimp and they were excellent. All in all a very good salad. Wine is sold by the bottle, and the markup isn't that bad. We had a nice pinot that cost $20. The hushpuppies deserve mention, too. Excellent! Not greasy, not under or over cooked, and great flavor. Both the cocktail sauce and tartar sauce ate rather bland, so be sure to ask for some hot sauce. Try the pie! They don't make the key lime pie, they contract that out. And -good plan.
