Know what you're getting into up front. This ain't date night fare, this is volume dining. There is one, massive, open dining room with seating for 150 or so. It can get loud. Food and service, tho, are both good. You can easily stuff yourself here. We wanted lighter fare and each ordered the salad with fried shrimp on top. I had low expectations - thinking tasteless iceburg lettuce and little else. Instead, it was romaine, some baby spinach, toasted almonds and grape tomatoes. There were maybe ten good sized shrimp and they were excellent. All in all a very good salad. Wine is sold by the bottle, and the markup isn't that bad. We had a nice pinot that cost $20. The hushpuppies deserve mention, too. Excellent! Not greasy, not under or over cooked, and great flavor. Both the cocktail sauce and tartar sauce ate rather bland, so be sure to ask for some hot sauce. Try the pie! They don't make the key lime pie, they contract that out. And -good plan. Food was ok. 8 out of 10. Service was absolutely horrible. Waitress didn't get drink orders until 10 minutes after we were seated. When the drink order came it was missing my sons' regular Pepsi. 45 minutes to get a simple crab dip appetizer. Took another 20 minutes to be asked if we wanted our side salads. 1.5 hours to get our food. We were the second table to be seated, due to us arriving at 4:40 before they opened. This place is defiantly a typical OBX type venue, if they perceive you have money (Kooks) they will bend over backwards for you. but if you are perceived a (Pogs) they don't have time for you. This is the second visit we have had here and enjoyed it more than the first. Very clean with friendly staff. Our party ordered broiled and grilled seafood platters. Though most menu items are fried, all you have to do is ask and they will broil or grill anything for you. The scallops were wonderful, such a treat to have real, tasty scallops cooked to perfection. My husband ordered the Grouper special, broiled instead of fried with twice-baked potatoes and turnip greens. Huge piece of Grouper, very yummy. The turnip greens were great, cooked just right and not loaded down with greasy ham or bacon. Water and tea glasses stayed full. Hush puppies sweet. Coleslaw not well liked by this family due to the addition of pickles. By the front door is a window you can peer in to watch the kitchen. The night we went, the kitchen appeared immaculate. After having a large lunch and donuts from the Fractured Prune, we were looking for a light dinner. The grill at the Jolly Roger, where we were staying, had just closed, so we asked for a recommendation. The guy at Jolly Roger recommended Breezeway and, although we weren't that hungry, we have no regrets! It was my first time tasting hush puppies and I'm hooked!! Sweet, delicious fried goodness! I suspect these hush puppies were better than most. I had the fried shrimp and you could tell the seafood was fresh under the breading, which was light and perfect. My husband got the fried scallops and they were the best I've ever tasted. Portions were generous and the service was fast and very friendly. Our waitress brought Parmesan cheese on the side for the kids' pasta, which was very smart. I only wish I had been hungrier so I could have enjoyed dessert and not brought half my shrimp back to the hotel for a late night snack! The prices were a little high, but for a kid friendly place that is still pleasant, great service, excellent ambiance and a fantastic ocean view -- I don't mind paying for that kind of quality. read more

The fried food was just ok, but you can get fried seafood at Captain D's so why travel so far to eat fried food. I had the catch of the day which was grilled king mackerel with a mango salsa. My boyfriend and I went in today for an early dinner. We were sat quickly, our server, Tabitha, was super friendly and attentive. The hush puppies were insane, the best I have ever had. We had scallops, clams and shrimp. The scallops were cooked to perfection. They were very lightly breaded and had tons of flavor. The French fries were perfectly crispy and the cold slaw was very tasty. The flavor profile on everything was spot on. I can't recommend this place enough. Dropped by with my husband, after our neighbor for the week recommended it. Loved that it was less than 1/2 a mile from our place. Monday night is "all you can eat crab legs" night. It was a little pricey for us at $40, so we ordered off the menu. We ordered water to start because we hadn't had time to check out the drink menu, and our waiter brought hush puppies with them. As everyone has said, they are to die for. They absolutely melt in your mouth, and they came out piping hot. We ordered a bottle of the house Cab Sauv (nothing fancy, but did the trick), and started with the calamari. I was a little nervous because calamari can be so easily screwed up, but it was quite good. It was very well seasoned, and not the slightest bit chewy. We both ordered the 2 item combo: myself with the shrimp and clamstrips, my husband with the shrimp and flounder. They both arrived hot, and were excellent. Clams can also be a bit tricky to prepare, but I have no complaints. I was really impressed with the fries, also. Instead of steak fries that usually accompany calabash, they have seasoned fries--like straight curly fries. Yum! There were only two of us in my party, so our plates were carried by hand, however I did see the carts pushed around. I actually think in this place, it's smart. Lots of huge parties come in (the group behind us was 15) and carrying that much food would be really heavy. The restaurant itself is rather tight, with tables close together, so if one person stood while a tray was coming by, it could be a disaster. I think it works in this restaurant. I do recommend coming early as some other reviews have stated. The restaurant and the lobby were packed, and people were even waiting outside by the time we left at 6:15-30. A couple of things I didn't love: it was really warm in the restaurant. There are a ton of windows in the restaurant, and either the air conditioning can't keep up with all the sunlight and body heat, or they are being too conservative on their power bill. I agree with the person who said they don't take advantage of their waterfront presence. We came in right after 5, and the blinds were already pulled down. Theoretically, it was to keep the sun from blinding us, but I would have preferred to see the sunset. You can ask someone to open or close them (there is a sign), but we just didn't. I want to address some of the other reviews. I would recommend some expectations management. A quick skim of the menu will tell you this place is nothing fancy. There is nothing written in French, no words like "drizzled" or "glazed", and no long list of ingredients describing a full body of complex flavors. If you're looking for that, this isn't your place. But if you want good, fresh, calabash style food, you should definitely give it a try! And you'll be happy to know they've bought belts for their bus boys...apparently. read more

We've been coming to Topsail for a while now. And have been to Breezeway several times. This has been our stop for traditional fried seafood. However, this time we were all disappointed in the quality of our meals. I had the flounder. It's hard to describe just how bland it was. Didn't taste fresh either. My wife had their island chicken and ate very little. None of us were very pleased. We needed some nourishment, and got that. But really nothing else. When I was checking out, I mentioned that it was not close to the best meal we've had there. No response. This place has gone downhill and I can't recommend it. read more

This place is a toss up. We went three times. Two times, we had the same server and he was great and attentive. The food was tasty both times. I had seafood lasagna the first time and the pick three with clams, scallops and crab. The fries were tasty and the hush puppies were incredible. Hot crab dip is a must. The third time, a younger kid was our server. He was attentive but didn't prebus the table so we had a table full of dirty dishes by the end of the meal and had a hard time maneuvering about the table. We had a big party with lots of apps and water with all of our beverages so we really could have used some bussing a few times. He had the cart a few times and didn't grab anything when he came by to check on us. I had the pick three again, scallops, flounder and shrimp. The food was soggy and greasy this time. The bacon wrapped scallops were greasy and cold and the slaw wasn't cured. The hush puppies were misshapen and dark and not as tasty. I could see a cook in the kitchen eating and licking her fingers. We had a long wait that night and when we were coming into the very full waiting room with our large party, one of our group is older and has cancer and has to use a walker to very slowly get around, he was making his way in while somebody held the door for us and a lady in a wheelchair was waiting patiently to get out the door. As he made it in the door and the lady was preparing to go out, the older guy that was at the host stand (I think he seemed like an owner) came out and asked us to shut the door so the cold air wasn't getting out... He didn't even look to see that we had the door open so handicapped patrons could come in and leave... It was very off putting and unprofessional. read more

This place was excellent and second compared to the sea food restaurant we went to in New River off of the Island called Riverview. They can host a larger group and the food is excellent. It's more like a fish camp setting with loud obnoxious yankee tourist but it's worth dealing because the food is really good. The prices are not great but not bad at all. You can get the pick three seafood platter for under 23 bucks. I do recommend it for families but if you are a small group drive off the island to New River and check out the Riverview Cafe. Better set up less wait better food. read more

We chose this restaurant due to its 60-plus year existence, assuming that lasting so long meant it must be good. Unfortunately, that is not the case. None of our seafood seemed to be locally caught, or fresh. I and my sister ordered crab legs, which came out overcooked and sticking to the shells. What was worse was the fishy, not-sweet taste of the crab meat. Very disappointing quality, especially for $21/plate. The hush puppies were a nice texture, and nicely fried, but too sweet. My husband's fried shrimp and fried clam strips were too heavily breaded, and the meat/fish substance inside was mysterious. These fried items seemed to be a frozen product, and a low-quality one, which makes no sense at all when you consider that this area has plentiful fresh, cheap seafood available at local fish markets. On the plus side, Breezeway sells a bottle of vinho verde wine for a good price of $15/bottle. Perhaps this might be a good place to enjoy the sunset views the Breezeway offers, as it sits right on the intracoastal, and have some wine. But the decor is from about 1980, so, aside from the sunset, the restaurant does not offer much ambience. Bottom line: we won't be back for this low-quality food. I have to tell the truth. I had no idea what to expect. Reviews looked OK, but from the outside (and the fact that this restaurant is associated with the motel), I was a little hesitant. Myself and 4 others stopped by today (Thur in April) for dinner after getting a great recommendation from a local real estate company. The restaurant was a good size, and it wasn't too busy. They bring hush puppies (sweet & delicious) to your table while looking over the menu. I ordered the SHE Crab Soup to start. Delicious. Packed with crab. Did I mention delicious? I ordered the special (Grilled Grouper, baked potato, asparagus - MKT Price - which was no where near the most expensive thing on the menu). The fish was amazing! The asparagus was good, but a little soggy. I can deal with that! The potato was good, too. I snatched some of my dad's fried scallops & my husband's fried shrimp... Clearly this is the way to go if you don't mind eating fried food. (I tend to avoid fried things, but hey! Grazing is OK, right?) . Weird things - they ring a bell every few minutes. Not sure what that's about (order up?), but it's OK. Guess it adds character. The sunset is also an added bonus. Heard the wait staff tell everyone to enjoy the sunset. Sure. Why not. So, good food. Ok service (a little slow - didn't get my drink refilled until after I was done eating - even though I had no drink when my food was served) but really not bad.... in fact pleasant. Yes. overall. All in all everyone's food was great. I had the turtle cheesecake for desert an it was heavenly. Perfect way to finish off the great meal. Despite what the phone line says, this restaurant doesn't even do take out orders. After calling for 30 minutes, nobody picked up and we got an automated message to "Come on in and place your take out order at the counter." We drove 25 minutes to do that. We waited at the front counter for 15 minutes and eventually a guy walks over and says they're not accepting Take Out orders due to lack of staff. Not even an apology. Though I have been coming to Topsail Island for a long time I had never been there! The inside is not super fancy but it is totally worth the trip for the all you can eat crab legs on Monday night! They bring them out one cluster at a time so they are warm - Fantastic! Sure there are fried things on the menu - it is the south after all - but that is not all they serve there are things for non-fish lovers as well. Let me start by saying I LOVE this restaurant. So much so that we typically visit this location twice during our stay. All of the food is delicious (southern and fried seafood!) reminding me of the fishcamps from back home. And oh my goodness the hush puppies are perhaps the best in NC. Now you may be wondering why I rated this restaurant at 4 stars. We went yesterday with a large group of 12. They open at 5 and if you have a large group, either arrive at 5 or expect an hour wait. They can handle multiple large groups, it's just that popular. We arrived around 5:40 and knew we'd likely get to eat in an hour. When we were finally seated, they split us up to two separate tables. We were disappointed because we could have been seated much sooner if we just split up. When we finally got seated, the waiter seemed to rush us. He told us if we knew what we wanted to get it in soon so we could get our food. We were grateful, at first, for the waiter's warning of the kitchen being backed up. But once we got our food, we barely were into our food when he came back by to ask if we wanted coffee or desert. Then on his next swoop, he gave us the check and a to-go box. We all look at each other to see if anyone looked remotely done (we didn't). Perhaps it was an off day (hope so!) and of course we will go back, but the whole event was a big off-putting and worth sharing our large group experience. read more

Our family went here in early June. 4 adults, 2 teens, 1 kid. A largish dining room, good AC, fish tank, nice view to the sound. Pretty good for kids. Hush puppies were the highlight of the meal, unfortunately. We had a good variety of items, and none of it was especially great. If you want some fried seafood for a reasonable price with a decent atmosphere, this place is fine. If you want really excellent food, look elsewhere. read more

We must have come on an off night. I can't believe the good reviews I'm reading here. Our food was sparse for a $22 plate of four scallops for oysters one deviled crab and one piece of fish. Oh and 12 french fries. They had no lemons to speak of and their sodas came in cans. Tables were crunched together and it was very tight and very noisy. I understand that us tourists are on vacation and can be excitable and loud, however it wouldn't have been such an annoyance if we were not shoulder to shoulder with so many people. Pros: nice view, convenient to The Breezeway Inn next door, 7 out of 10 for taste. Cons: expensive, ridiculously small portions, canned sodas, nasty tea, smelly unfiltered beach tap water (the kind you get from your faucet, you know the smell). Never going back. I'm sure they don't care, they obviously are skating by with no repeat business from customers with no other options close by. Beware. Again, could have just been an off night. Very off. read more

Looking for fried food? Breezeway is the spot. We came in and were told they had wait but it was weird because the restaurant had majority of empty tables! What?? Either way we were sat after a relatively small wait. Our server was on point on a busy Labor Day weekend. I was pleasantly surprised they had some craft beers. I have to come here everytime I go to Topsail Island. The kitchen is a little scary to walk by, I admit. But once you get over that and have a hushpuppy, you will be delighted. The hushpuppies are sublime. This place is known for their fried seafood. I wouldn't really recommend gettting something not fried here. For fried food, I never feel icky after eating it, so they must use some good oil. The view is beautiful here and the air conditioner is always nice and cold. read more
