Basically, I really liked the place. The food was above average for a bar. The beer selection was very good but not exceptional. The atmosphere was clean and comfortable. For me service was excellent. If the British wish to pretend that Charlie Mops (rhymes with barley hops) invented beer, let them. (We know it was probably invented in the middle east about 13,000 years ago). For now, I'll accept that Charlie Mops is a cool place just north of the Michigan Line, where I can get a great burger and a beer (and play a few games of Dig Dug). 4 to 5 stars!! I'll be back.

I still find the retro historic ambiance charming- with its over-the-top velvet wallpaper, ornate chandeliers, and white tablecloths on each table. I don't believe any decor changes have been made over the decades. It's part of the restaurant's signature charm and I love it. It was a rather hot and humid day in Michigan and I immediately noticed that the AC wasn't keeping up with the heat. Still, it wasn't overly uncomfortable. Even with a 6pm reservation, the restaurant was very crowded, so I attributed the heat to the crowd and some of the sizzling plates, in addition to lack of adequate AC. . Our server greeted us promptly and told us about the specials of the night. She took our drink orders and came back to take our food orders. My friend ordered filet mignon with a baked potato, with a beef vegetable soup. I ordered the Halibut Special, broiled in butter with shiitake mushrooms and a baked potato plus a side of steamed asparagus to share. While awaiting our orders, we were served exactly two pieces of bread ("dirty bread"?!) and a basket of bread or pretzel sticks. The bread wasn't even warm and I didn't eat it further after one bite. That was okay because I was saving myself for the entree'. When our entrees arrived, they looked appetizing. Upon taking a bite of my Halibut, however,I was underwhelmed. It wasn't horrible in any way but didn't impress me as anything amazing or crave-worthy. The asparagus, imo, should have had the stalks cut down further to cut off the yellow parts of the bottoms. It was a decent sized portion though. My friend's filet mignon was "good" according to her, though no further enthusiasm. It was a pleasant enough dinner though it was rather loud and difficult to converse at times. Our server was polite, pleasant and efficient. Upon being served the check, (I was treating for my friend's birthday), I glanced at it but didn't study it. Later, I was surprised to see a petty surcharge of .50 each for sour cream for the two baked potatoes that were included in the entrees. There was also an upcharge I didn't recognize for some type of cheese? I just don't like being nickled and dimed, so it irritated me. I left the restaurant thinking that I wouldn't hurry back and that I would order a pasta dish. However, it's definitely worth checking out for the experience if you haven't tried this spot. It's very close to Toledo and there's plenty of free parking. Check out pics below!

Brenda's is a great place for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It's everyday diner food but the menu is huge, as are the portions. Very friendly wait staff. All homemade desserts. Try the cheesecake, it's like nothing you've ever had before! Have never had a bad meal at Brenda's and have never heard so many people comment on how much they enjoyed their experience. This is becoming our go-to place for a nice, inexpensive dinner out. If the owner is in, which she usually is, you'll know her by her friendly, welcoming attitude. Brenda cares about her customers. It's usually the wait staff... They always get the eggs just right and I've never been served a broken yolk (are you listening other breakfast places?). Over-easy eggs don't have broken yolks. Their crispy hashbrowns are just that, crispy! They're not gray or half cooked potatoes. The toast is made of high quality rye bread (Schwebel's?) with plenty of butter (and it's always perfectly toasted). THE HAM!!! Oh my god, the ham! This isn't some awful ham roll, no no! It's a slice from an actual ham! Real HAM! I was told it's Dearborn ham and I'd bet that it is. If you're not familiar, Dearborn makes great stuff. So, my issues... Not sure, but the coffee seems like it changed. It's weaker now and lacks the flavor from the coffee I remember from the past. They also stopped garnishing the plates with a slice of orange. I LOVED that slice of orange. Finally, the wait staff. They have some great waitresses but every once in a while, I get one that really doesn't know how it works. Because the server can really screw up a meal, I've avoided going back for months at a time. One time the waitress brought everything except the toast. I started eating the ham and potatoes. By the time she brought the toast, the eggs were cold and I couldn't eat them. She still charged my though. Didn't go back for a year, I swear. It's really important to always bring the complete meal. If the toast chef was asleep at the wheel and the entire breakfast becomes ice cold, have the line re-fire the order. It's not the customer's fault. Anyway, it's a nice, family place. Things usually go well, but there are those times... Oh, the place gets crazy busy on weekend mornings, especially with the after church crowd, so go early or plan on a wait.

I also ordered a coffee.The way their system works is that you place your order and pay; then you're seated and your beverage/food is brought to your table. I sat in a booth and my coffee was very promptly brought out to me. The ambiance is absolutely adorable with red and white tablecloths and balloons. There is also an ice cream counter. It was a very pleasant setting in which to enjoy my coffee. Within a reasonable amount of time, my omelette was served with a side of toast. The omelette was huge and filled with lots of tasty tomatoes, onions and green peppers, all finely chopped and perfectly seasoned. Hash browns were also tucked inside the omelette. Although the cheese had been forgotten, I didn't miss it too much because the omelette itself was so delicious. The toast was served with delicious homemade strawberry jam. I could only eat half of the omelette and was given a box to take it home. My server was a very sweet young girl who kept checking to see if I needed anymore coffee and if everything tasted good. At a nearby table, a woman spilled her glass of water and people from the kitchen immediately came out to clean it up. They were extremely good spirited and reassured the embarrassed woman that it happened all the time and was no problem. The atmosphere felt very warm and welcoming. I would absolutely recommend Grace's Kitchen in Point Place as a charming spot for breakfast or lunch. It's on Summit Street across from Aunt Linda's Pet Grooming and H&R Block. While other reviews note that this is a cash-only establishment, I used a credit card both times I was there, though I left a cash tip on the table this time.
