I researched a bunch of chimney sweeps. Turns out many were related. They all up into one agent setting appointments, some sort of corporate or franchise thing? Need to be careful about this. I picked Darren because he's local. Previous owners somehow screwed up the functionality of my fireplace. They tore some things out so when I do have a fire, usually duraflame, some of the smoke leaks out into the room. Darren diagnosed the problem and did a custom fix, installed a smoke guard, chain screen protector; did a great job, doesn't leak anymore. Great service, good price; also an honest chimney sweep, he looked at the chimney said it doesn't need cleaning. Highly recommend. read more

I removed the brick facade of a fireplace in my house built in 1984. I also raised the floor about 5" (it was a sunken living room floor, now level with the rest of the house). I knew there were some mortar repairs to do on the bricks in the chimney and I wanted to have a new hearth made. I plan to do the remainder of the work (install tile surround and wooden mantel) myself, but I needed an experience chimney person to do the mortar, hearth, and consult on the proposed changes (raising the bottom of the fireplace to match the height of the floor, replacing demo'd accordion door with a movable screen, etc). I called on a Sunday morning and he offered to meet me the next day though it was a holiday. He was easy to understand on the phone and seemed to understand my issues well. He explained that because of the nature of the call he would charge an inspection fee that would go toward any work if I decided to go with him. He also said he'd bring his supplies so any minor projects would be completed same day (and thus, the fee would go toward that at least, more if I wanted to do more then or another day). When he arrived (on time) we walked through my concerns and he completed an inspection and spent as much time as I wanted to understand my goal. He explained his experience and what as possible, took some measurements and notes, and agreed to get back to me with a quote for my fairly unusual project. I'm a talker and he was happy to chat, but he kept the process moving even when I was probably being a distraction. He was professional and funny, so far so good. Darren returned a total of three days (not all full days because the work needed to be done in stages) and completed the job for the price we agreed on which was lower than two other estimates I received. He worked around or was creative with a couple issues that came up. The mortar work was well explained at each stage and it came out very well. Darren was very pleasant and trustworthy. I enjoyed talking with him and my wife was always comfortable with him. We agreed to have him complete the work while we were not home and he was always respectful of the house, keeping the work space clean and avoiding getting dust or debris from the dirty work from spreading around the room. I will happily call him for future repairs and inspections. Worked around our schedules and spent time working out how to do the job in an affordable way. He even pushed forward his final work days when I asked if we could finish a bit sooner than we initially scheduled. I even liked his work truck (a Volvo wagon!). Very strongly recommended for inspections and repairs. read more

I have tried a couple of times to arrange with this person to do work, but he has not responded to my telephone calls. I first called in early December to schedule a chimney cleaning and inspection. There was not an answer so I left a recall message on the answering machine with a description of the work I sought. I did not receive a response, so I called a couple more times and left messages, but received no response. In January I called again and left a message asking to schedule an appointment a few weeks in the future. He did not respond to the message. He may do good work, but he is bad at returning phone calls to schedule work. He also does not have a website with an email address, so there is no way to contact him but by telephone. So I contacted another worker on this list and received a response quickly. read more

Not only were they professional, friendly, and knowledgeable, Daren also took time to talk to me about why I DIDN'T NEED TO SPEND MORE MONEY on a repair! He said it was completely unnecessary!
