We just finished a massive landscape makeover with Brent Landscaping, and we couldn't be more thrilled with the final result, and our journey with their team. Initial consultation - Dan and Xochitl came to our house, where we had in-person kickoff session. We walked around the property together, where they both carefully listened to how our ideas around how to the use the space, and indulged our numerous 'newbie' questions. They are tremendously insightful, very experienced, and remarkably patient with folks like us who are new to the process. Design phase - Xochitl took all our ideas and took a couple of weeks to think deeply about what our outside space could be transformed into. And, boy did she deliver! She and Dan unveiled their vision to us at our next in-person meeting, where Xochitl had drawn out a stunning illustration of what the final design would look like. We loved it so much, it's now framed an hung on our wall. You can talk about designs all you want, but it's only when you see it in front of you that the vision truly comes to life. Execution - The team indicated when they would be available to start our project (after finishing the ones they had already committed to), and they were true to their word. And when everything got started, it was a whirlwind until completion. I don't think there was even a single day where someone from the team wasn't on-site, pushing things forward. One things start, they are fully dedicated to your project, and you can see your outdoor space transforming everyday. Finances - One thing I appreciated immensely was Dan's transparency around the finances involved. He provided a detailed, itemized quote at the on-set, and set out clear processes around payment cadence. That left no room for surprises. Of course, as with any project, we made adjustments and changed our minds on a few things along the way. Dan immediately made the necessary changes, and gave us a clear update on how that might affect costs and timing. Communication - Dan was incredible when it came to keeping us informed on progress and answering questions. He would lay out the plan for the next couple of weeks, make us aware of any decisions he needed from us, and provide timely updates as we moved into the next phases of the project. This was definitely a huge help, and very much appreciated. Final result - This was our first major landscaping endeavor, so there was a lot of blind faith put in the team, and I'm so glad we did. They completely transformed our outdoor space, both front and back. I'm Very surprised about these good reviews! I used this company for about 8 months to maintain our property, 1) I get complaints from our tenants about their crew not showing up (and yet still charged) and 2) They changed the monthly fees without any notice or communication. They don't respond to your email inquires while many months go by, then threaten to sue for outstanding balance which they added extra fees. Daniel is very pleasant, but communication is a nightmare - countless emails and phone calls to fix problems. I feel like I had to check their work almost every single time to make sure they did what I asked for. They often left parts of the yard untouched, didn't clean the leaves and forget about regular weeding. Affordable, but not worth it. read more

I felt that Dan is not effective in managing his staff. I learned of Brent Landscaping from Yelp and was enthusiastic to try. Dan was very responsive to my call. Apparently he was busy but came soon enough to visit our home. His quote was was not low but he appeared to be pleasant to work with, so I chose him. After the first time his guys came to work on my yard, I came home and could not tell whether anyone, at all, had done anything. I called and emailed him pictures of the lawn - specifically pointing out that, among other things, at least the edges of the lawn were not trimmed. He emphasized that his guys did a lot of weeding and other things, and would pay more attention to the edges next time. Two weeks later, I came home after his guys worked on the lawn for the second time, and found that there was still no sign that anyone ever worked on the lawn because the grass was still long and the edges untouched and fuzzy. My wife complained to him and a few minutes later, his guys came again to trim the edges. Not a good job this time either. That was it! Now I have another landscaping company who charges the same monthly fees but comes weekly, instead of bimonthly, and the lawn looks so much better. Dan might be a great guy, but I have a strong feeling that he is not managing his staff effectively. read more

I do have Daniel's teams working on my yard for regular maintenance and they've been good, but writing about a project I had him do today. Dan's team was hired to replace the lawn with a fescue lawn. Slightly long on scheduling the time but once they got started they were great. Dan, his crew and his wife Xochitl turned our lava rock nightmare into a green oasis. The work was well planned and the boys were efficient, artistic and fast. Our place looks great and we are wishing for more summer so we can enjoy our new yard. The only issue was a zone issue in our backyard: half the lawn was getting watered along with the plants. No big deal and Dan was willing to dig up what he had to and correct the problem, but I was too anxious to be done. Wow! Simply put, Dan and his guys are incredibly friendly, honest, fair, hardworking, and a joy to work with! We interviewed 5 different landscapers for what was a fairly simple job on our front lawn and Dan was a great pick. He came in under his initial estimate, provided great attention, did an amazing job, was super honest and straight forward, showed up ON TIME, and was less expensive than the other guys! There are a lot of shady people out there, and Dan is a breath of fresh air! Dan won't pressure you to buy materials or tack on extra projects and he definitely won't rip you off. His guy Max worked non stop and did such a great job I couldn't believe it! On a side, less important note, Dan speaks perfect English which admittedly made planning and developing our idea really easy with zero language barrier. That can be hard to come by in this business. In regards to the one bad review listed on here, I don't know what that person is talking about. Don't worry - Dan is incredibly reliable and was fast to respond, especially because we needed an estimate within hours. I would definitely refer Dan to anyone looking for any type of lawn service. I called Dan because we had some minor sprinkler issues and the grasses were dying in our front lawn. Dan took a look and was very honest because he told me the sprinkler issue was an easy fix, and he even fixed it for me for FREE! I asked if I could watch him and learn from him, and he patiently explained to me what he was doing and told me how I could do this myself if this happens again. Dan also told me the grass would come back to life if we just continued watering it regularly. So now I can get the front lawn into a decent shape without doing any major work. Thanks Dan. We hired Daniel and his crew for both a front yard landscaping project and for biweekly maintenance. Daniels's wife, Xochitl of Lily of the Valley did the design for the yard. Overall, we have had a positive experience. The landscaping project involved building a path with pavers, reshaping a driveway (concrete cutting), re-doing irrigation (including running an electrical line through the garage wall) and a full landscaping of the front yard, which many plants, a couple of trees, mulch and boulders. Daniel is an incredibly nice guy, straightforward, and good to work with. He takes a lot of pride in his work and want things done right. They did a great job and our place looks so much better now. Dan's crew Cesar and Miguel were very professional, timely and clean during the whole process. Daniel and his crew also always sought our feedback as they went, which I really appreciated. They went as far as moving some pipes and retouching some paint to make us happy. We'd worked with other landscapers before this and had a bad experience, so it was a refreshing pleasure to work such a professional team. Xochitl the designer was incredibly responsive and accommodating during the design process. I am a pretty picky client and she had several lengthy phone conversations about plant choices and design. Regarding the biweekly maintenance of our front and back yards, our experience has been ok. A few times Daniel and his crew have taken a lot longer than we wanted to correct a situation -such as weeds or areas of the yard not getting properly irrigated- but the work always gets done and we are happy with the result. Since most people here have been reviewing Daniel's one-off projects, I wanted to add my experience as a customer for regular yard service: Daniel and his guys have been doing my routine yard maintenance every other week for the past 2 years. I have a fairly large yard with large lawns and my lawns look pretty good. So, overall I am quite happy with them. As several others mentioned, Daniel is very pleasant to interact with, both by phone and by email. I really like that I can email him instructions a day or two before the service, and he'll ensure that they get followed. I'm the type of customer that pays a lot of attention to what's going on, and it is true that once in a while something gets missed -- but it's within reason, and it always gets corrected on the next visit. Keeping in mind that these guys are human I think they do a fine job, and, more importantly, they do noticeably better than other landscape maintenance companies I have used in the past, while also having a competitive price. My only reservation about my experience from the past two years is that there is periodically turnover on the team, and whenever there is a switch of the person servicing my yard, it does seem to take a few visits before the new person relearns all the little details I care about. That's the downside of hiring a multi-person company ... but of course the plus side is that they can easily handle variation in the amount of work and someone or the other will reliably show up each week. This is very important to me as I also have a couple of trees that general huge amounts of leaves in the fall. Daniel just sends and extra person or two to help and it gets taken care of in the same amount of time as any other visit. I hired them to do a big fall clean-up and they pruned back lots of trees and shrubs, fixed our sprinklers, raked up old leaves and left everything looking neat and tidy. These guys really know how to prune! Everything was well shaped and natural looking. Dan is the nicest guy you will ever meet and all the workers were friendly and easy to work with too. Just rude!!! My neighbor uses these guys as their gardener. Every time they come we notice our driveway dirty with leaves/trash. Today caught them using the blower and blowing trash onto our property. They swept my neighbors yard but left ours dirty. I went outside and asked them to clean up the mess they had made. One guy nodded and walked away. A little bit later they jumped in their truck, looked at the garbage on our driveway and chose to drive away without cleaning it up. I'm one of those people who spend a lot of time pouring over plant catalogs and dreaming about gardens. When I finally decided to convert my lawn into something that used water more wisely, I queried several landscaping companies. Xochitl(Lily of the Valley Design) and her husband Daniel (Brent Landscaping) listened very carefully to my ideas, asking lots of really good questions. Xochitl created a design that met all my needs while exciting me with new ideas. We collaborated on the plant choices with Xochitl contributing several I had not considered (I love them) as well as including lots of my own favorites. Daniel tracked down the plants and trees at local nurseries. These were not just any plants! I was very picky about not just plant species but also plant variety! They had to be xeric as well as colorful. When we could not find a supplier for bougainvillea "Camarillo Fiesta" or for multi-trunk "Miami", "Biloxi", and "Choctaw" crape myrtles, Daniel and his team adjusted the project plan to accommodate my ordering starter trees online. (It will be a while before these are actually trees!) The whole experience was amazing. The core team of 3 arrived promptly every day and worked very hard all day. There was a fourth roving coordinator person to do errands, coordinate deliveries from the local supply companies, etc. very efficient ! I was recovering from knee surgery so I was home all day and tried to keep out of their way but it was fun to see the whole thing evolve so quickly. The guys paid meticulous attention to detail. They took extra care of stuff that any homeowner would want. for example: they made sure mulch was not bumping up against my wood siding, that there was an air gap between the shrubbery and the house, and that there was adequate lighting for those dark scary places. They moved pots and hoses neatly out of the way. They even put my recycle bins out for me after filling with yard waste. When a re-design of my back yard fence cropped up towards the tail end of the project, Daniel recommended a framing contractor and stone mason who were equally excellent. They resolved my fencing issue in a single day and re-finished my paverstone seating wall to look as if it had always been planned that way. Daniel has an electrical expert on the team as well who helped with both the landscape lighting and installation of a small water feature. The core team of three also helped me with a "Watering Experiment". In addition to the irrigation that Brent Landscaping put in place, these guys helped me place "GrowOyas" watering pots also called "olla" that we buried in my sunny back patio area. The idea is to fill the pots with water which will slowly osmose thru the clay to the soil outside. The guys were curious and very supportive of the whole project. The trees growing next to the GrowOyas are doing very well even on hot days ! I highly recommend both Lily of the Valley Design and Brent Landscaping. My yard delights me every time I walk through it and I'm spending a lot more time outside now. read more

Dan's crew has consistently done a good job on regular maintenance at my home and some rental properties for the past year. His crews are diligent and careful about regular maintenance. They are very responsive to requests for one-time chores associated with the grounds. We've also been pleased with the landscape improvement projects for which we've hired Dan. His crews have done a good job on such projects as planting native grasses and drip-irrigating them in a row of large flower pots and installing new trees from 15-gal. containers. I am sorry but I have to differ from the previous reviews. Based on the Yelp reviews I contacted him and let him know that I just need some help with a small backyard. He came promptly and said he could definetely help and will call me back with a quote, he never called back and didnt even respond to my call after that. I found his behaviour very unprofessional, it maybe he thought the work was not worth his while but if he is honest and sincere as they say, he should have the courtesy to at least call back and let you know he cannot do it, rather he appeared all enthusuastic and even said he could have it done the folowing week when he came to see the place. I cant imagine he can be reliable or honest if he lacks professionalism. I cannot recommend him to others especially if you dont have a huge backyard or landscaping work, in which case he might be interested.
