After wandering around downtown Cincy looking for dinner and encountering wait times of 1.5 to 2 hours across the board, we called these guys up and were in with no wait whatsoever. First of all, they have a really nice beer selection. Lots of unique stuff that you might not see other places, and plenty of variety. They also have a nice cocktail menu, and if (purely hypothetical) your dining companion drops a shrimp in your Manhattan they will make you a new one. The specials are awesome. I don't know if they always have such great variety when it comes to specials or if it was better because it was a Saturday, but damn. The smoked Gouda pimento cheese spread was killer. What I'd really come back for, though, were the pickles. They pickle all kinds of vegetables. Green beans, green tomatoes, jicama, carrots, and of course cucumbers - all of them get pickled in this gorgeous, slightly spicy concoction. I could have just eaten that all night. This place is okay, but was actually pretty disappointing. I got the turkey goat cheese sandwich and the poutine - and neither were good. That's the nicest way I can put it. The turkey was extremely dry, the bread wasn't anything spectacular - just slices of toasted white bread from a store-bought loaf I'm assuming. The poutine... I was so excited about this because I love poutine and their menu descriptions are great... But the short rib's texture was like someone put it through a food processor before slopping it into the fries, I only got down a couple bites before I quit just because the texture was grossing me out. It was kind of like a grainy meat spread. Ick. If you're looking for poutine, definitely skip this place and go to Senate instead. Even Revolution's tater tot poutine (which is technically not poutine haha) is way better than this attempt. Also, I feel like for the quality of the food they're serving - this place is way over-priced. BrewRiver you had me at Turkey and goat cheese sandwich! Tucked away on Riverside Drive I could see not really even knowing BrewRiver exists. It's worth the trip though! A true gastropub BrewRiver offers both amazing beverages and delicious comfort foods. As I said my favorite is the Turkey and Goat Chesse SAMich. It's huge and I always have a half of it to take home with me for lunch the next day. Along with dinner BrewRiver also offers a lunch menu and a brunch (not sure about brunch days and hours). They rotating beers on tap from breweries and different varieties. The wait can sometimes be a bit lengthy, but you can get a beer at the bar while you wait. The atmosphere is comfortable and laid back. BrewRiver offers delicious food and a variety of beers. It's definitely a must try. read more

We gave this place a second chance regrettably, and will not be back. A Saturday night and they were busy, granted, but from start to finish our experience was subpar. Our server just didn't seem to have any sense of urgency, everything took forever, our drinks our appetizer and our food. My entree ended up being cold jambalaya. The food is way overpriced along with the drinks. The restaurant smells kinda musty and I questioned the cleanliness at the drink area as I watched my server remove the empty water jug that had been handled already from a dirty table and apparently set it to be refilled at the drink area without being cleaned. My drink from the bar first was decent, but the second one tasted totally different, I waited so long for it I didn't even want to complain as I knew it would take another 30 minutes to get a replacement. Our check was way too much, but I decided it wasn't worth it to wait another hour to have our complaint answered. We cut our losses and will just avoid this place. My advice: go to Swamp Water Grill instead! read more

I came here for brunch with my boyfriend and girlfriend on Easter. New Orleans style brunch-so good! I got the New Orleans style BBQ shrimp and grits. Amazing! Not too sweet, and the bbq sauce was light, not to rich. Highly recommended. I also ordered a biscuit, as I am a biscuit lover, and unfortunately, not impressed. It was too salty, or too much baking powder, or something. Couldn't put my finger on it. Gave sort of a chalky taste/texture in my mouth. But, the butter and house made jelly served with it was so good! I'm sure the biscuit is usually awesome, just off today. Otherwise, a fun place. I'm a fan of the whole gastropub concept and was excited to finally get a chance to try Brew River. We'll start with the drink menu: awesome! There were 23 beers on tap (many of which I had never had and some of which I had never even heard of), plus additional canned and bottled selections. There was also a nice wine and cocktail me u. I hear they have good sangria and was tempted to try the watermelon sangria that was on special, but I stuck with beer. Our server was great. Very knowledgable about the beers and food. He went over the specials and our table selected the stuffed mushrooms for an appetizer. These were delicious! They were stuffed with a basil cream cheese pesto, then breaded and fried. Even my boyfriend who doesn't really like mushrooms enjoyed these! Next were the entrees. I got the turkey and goat cheese samich because really any time I see goat cheese on a menu, I have to get it. I really enjoyed it! It came with hand cut fries, but the thing that really made the dish was the house made ketchup - I could have eaten that stuff by the spoonful! My boyfriend got the Amish chicken, which was delicious. Our other table mates got the Cuban (which was a special and deemed very good), as well as the Brew River Burger (also deemed good). The burgers are enormous and could probably be split amongst 2 people. Even though we were all stuffed, the server told us about the dessert special and we had to try it - Home made Apple Brown Betty with hazelnut Gelato. The 4 of us split one, and I still don't think we finished the whole thing - it was amazing! The last thing I need to mention is the ambiance. We sat outside and had a nice view of the river. I noticed there looked to be an upper tier of the patio and saw employees out there watering plants. I asked our server about it. They have and herb and vegetable garden so they can make foods as fresh as possible. There is also a chef's table up there which can be reserved for parties of 10 to enjoy a special tasting menu. BrewRiver is the perfect place to take someone you don't want to talk to. Environment seems friendly, beer choice is impressive, food is very tasty indeed - my BLT was delicious despite the bacon being a little over-charred - and the service impeccable. However, and (for me at least) it's a BIG however, the acoustics in the place are appalling. I couldn't hear what my wife was saying to me and she couldn't hear what I was saying to her, as noise levels were turned up waaaaaay past 11. Seemingly no-one can hear properly in there, so they talk louder and louder and louder, just compounding the problem. My advice is to definitely go but take a notepad with you to swap notes across the table on. Or perhaps learn sign-language. NOISY!!!! read more

I went twice in three days - both on their "special" days: Sunday brunch and Tuesday crawfish boil. Live music both of these days (and only these days I believe). Key take-aways: Friendly staff, plenty of parking on the street, food flavors are bold and New Orleans inspired, lengthy draft beer list, $15-20 entrees. Only reason really I didn't post a 5-star is price. Sunday Brunch - Decent sized menu and all sounded like good options to be fair. Everyone enjoyed their meal, and the bacon infused donuts (weren't on our menu) were pretty solid as well. Good hangover cure options if needed. Crawfish Boil - Every Tuesday starting at 5pm, you can order 1.5 lbs or 3 lbs and it comes on a massive platter with some redskin potatoes and a couple sausages. The flavor was fantastic and it was fun to get in there with your hands and chow down. Highly recommend it for a little bit different dining experience. Price was ~$10/oz if I recall correctly. All told I will likely be back. They do have a great draft selection though the prices escalate quickly up to $11-12, and the menu prices average around $8 for an app/dessert, $15-20 for an entree so not the cheapest endeavor but I'd argue worth it. read more

Nice quiet pub on the Ohio. It is somewhat removed from everything, which adds both to its charm and its privacy. It would love to see it at night, with the river breeze and live music. I have always wanted to stop by this restaurant. Always seemed interesting. I enjoyed the environment. A little house converted. Which was pretty neat. I had the gumbo, which was great! Although, a pretty small portion for such a high price. I was actually not willing to get anything else though because the prices were pretty high on everything else. Which is probably my biggest complaint. Everything seemed pretty expensive. I would have wanted to try other things as they looked pretty exciting. But hard to justify. This place has lots of potential, but we were slightly disappointed with our visit today (4/23/2016 @ 2:00pm). We ordered the Crispy Buttermilk Sandwich with fries, which sounded perfect. The fries were excellent, though the homemade ketchup was a bit tomato-y, more of a marinera sauce than Heinz 57. The real disappointment was the undercooked chicken - very pink and wet. The bread and presentation was exceptional, but the chicken was inedible. The staff greeted us warmly and the service was excellent, but our food was disappointing. What a wonderful selection of beers, thoughtfully served by a kind and attentive staff. The atmosphere is lovely, with so much hand carved woodwork and prints on the walls that celebrate the history of the Ohio river industry. My husband and I brought his father and step mother for dinner, It was our first time visiting. My father in law eats basically only meat and potatoes. And I'm a vegetarian. And lean towards the vegan side of things. My father in law was quite happy...while I was a bit sad. The fries were wonderful. I just wish there had been a veggie burger or a portabella burger available with the Brew River Burger toppings. Portabella Crisps? Shut up. I have no idea what they are but I think I will love them when I find out. The only available vegetarian entree was Roasted Root Vegetables which comprised of Farro, bitter greens and Capriole goat cheese. And some beets, acorn squash and parsnips (?). The vegetables were not cooked through and the farro was very chewy and a little unwieldy. Major disappointment. Everyone else at the table enjoyed their meals very much, especially my step mother- in-law who had the Buttermilk Crispy Amish Hen. We will definitely be back. Great staff. Great view. But unless they find a way to give vegan/vegetarians another option for dinner, I'll stick with the truffle fries and a bottle of Unibroue Éphémère. read more

Small little place, (converted house with deck) but don't let that fool ya. Came here alone on a Thursday nite. Unfortunately, due to high winds, the power in the entire neighborhood went off just after I placed my order. So I dined and drank by the light of the emergency lights and candles on the bar (and my trusty little pocket LED lite.allowed me to even read a magazine) Hardly anyone who was there left, tho, even tho the power wasn't scheduled to come back on for about 3 more hours. So that should tell you something. Originally was going to order a BLT, but that was not an option now that the cooker was inoperative. Hostess/server was most helpful and friendly suggesting some good options. I got the prime rib over mashed potatoes with brussel sprouts on her recommendation. OMG, I generally don't like brussel sprouts fixed plainly, but these were semi-crunchy, spiced well and were awesome! Had no idea what I've been missing all these years. I even complimented the chef (Michael) when he walked out and talked to some of the patrons--he was impressed that his brussel sprouts were the first ones I had in 30 years! Had 2 soups--gumbo with Andouille sausage and butternut squash soup--both were excellent. Portion size on some items was a little on the small side, but the quality makes up for it IMHO. As for the beer, they had a lighted sign next to the bar with their house beers that were on tap--about 15 or 16 altogether. Chose a few before the power went out to have on a 6 beer sampler (4 oz each)--let my knowledgeable server select the other two for me--several were really super. I always get samplers in a place like this to try as many different things as possible. Dessert was some sort of decadent browniw with caramel sauce on it and a side of hazelnut gelato. I have to say in all honesty that (in the absence of my picky wife) I had an excellent experience here despite the limiting conditions and greatly admire them staying open despite the power outage and being as nice as they were. They were thrown a curve and hit a home run. I will definitely return to try some other menu items and brews. read more

We went here for the Thursday special, and we were not disappointed--the Etouffé was delicious! Either with shrimp or chicken, the andouille was a great accent for the dish, with a healthy helping of fluffy white rice. We recommend the sourdough bread as a complement. This place is top notch. The food is dynamite and many of the beers they brew are quite good. Coconut Porter and Maker's Stout are where it is at. I've been twice and both times have had the "special." First was a Lamb Shank where the meat fell off the bone and was complimented by Arugula and a side of Blue Cheese Mashed Potatoes - yeah, holy crap! Second was a Prime Rib that was perfectly prepared. Anyway, do yourself a favor and get your grub on at the gastropub! I'm planning on checking out their brunch this weekend. read more

The mussels were fresh but I couldn't help but think they needed some garlic... The fish and chips were tasty. The service at the bar was excellent. The part that differentiates this place from others is the constantly rotating selection of craft brews (great supporter of local breweries!) - their selection is somewhat overwhelming, but that is where the sampler comes into play. Came here a few weekends ago with my dad for dinner. We arrived around 745 on a Friday night and it was packed especially downstairs by the door. Not seeing a hostess and waiting around we decided to sit at the bar and chat up the bartenders Aaron and Becca and also enjoy some beers. The bartenders are very nice and really know the beer and also the menu. We split the large BBQ shrimp and mac and cheese since a lot of reviews mention it. Both were good, the mac and cheese had an overwhelming flavor of truffle oil, but it was fine. For the next course I told Aaron what I wanted and asked him to pair a beer and so he did, I ordered the fish and chips and they were good, but the fries were limp and the portion size of the fish was kind of small. Then for dessert I had the baked apple Betty and it was very good as the rogue hazelnut nectar gelato made the dish. Things were a little off-kilter when we were there because they were having unforeseen staff issues, but I appreciated that our server gave us a heads up. I am a sucker for a good wedge salad, and theirs did not disappoint! Nice lemony tang in the dressing helped make this one pretty memorable. We were a bit disappointed to not be able to sit outside due to a large party that had reserved several tables, but we had a pleasant view of the river from inside. We decided to visit BrewRiver for a Kegs n Eggs brunch that was part of Cincinnati Beer Week. The restaurant seemed terribly in prepared for the event. We were seated immediately but it took an hour and a half to get our food after ordering. They ran out of the 2 featured beers less than an hour after opening. The eggs poutine was good but overly salty. The goetta was mushy and the bacon was cold. I'll probably try it again when it's less crowded and the kitchen is less rushed. read more

We went for the first time tonight because of the Foodie Cincy card pack and even though we're barely 7 minutes away - had never heard of this place before. We were pleasantly surprised - it was awesome! Great drink menu (with local beers - and not only Madtree and Rhinegeist - I LOVE those breweries, but often feel like some other choices like Listermann and Triple Digit aren't as available) and some on nitro. They had enticing specials for the night - one of which was fried mushrooms stuffed with cheese and spinach, served with a mushroom sauce (a must if you're a mushroom lover). I ordered the BrewRiver Burger and my fiancé had the Buttermilk Crispy Amish Chicken. The burger was great, but the Crispy Amish Chicken was just... addicting! He ate the entire thing and when only the coleslaw was left on his plate, tried that (he doesn't normally ever eat coleslaw) and professed, "even the coleslaw is great!". We will definitely be back - really looking forward to trying their brunch menu. read more

I will start this out by saying: I lived in New Orleans for 5 years, worked in a top 10 restaurant in the nation that was located in NOLA, so I'd say I know a thing or two about the cuisine there. That being said, BrewRiver Gastropub struggles to make a legitimate attempt at New Orleans cuisine. I went 2 weeks ago with friends hoping to show them what NOLA cuisine is like. I ordered the muffuletta which is traditionally a dry sandwich with fresh ingredients such as olive salad, salami, mozzarella ham&provolone on a large bun with a texture somewhat similar to frenchbread. Wow. Was mine nowhere close at all to the MANY muffulettas I have had. It was greasy as all get out. There was cheesy grease dripping off of the sandwich and my fingers were also covered in the grease as well. My stomach was not pleased. My friends who all ordered traditional NOLA dishes I had suggested, had the same complaint. Also, it was horrifically overpriced. The service wasn't great either, even though we were one of 5 tables in the entire place. NOW to their drinks: the Bloody Mary I had left a lot to be desired, the beer was 6 dollars for an Abita draft. I'll be skipping this place from here on out. Shame since it has the potential to be far better and way more authentic to the New Orleans cuisine I so dearly miss. read more

The first time me and friends ate here, the food was fabulous (years ago). Today the food was okay and not impressive. First, the fried green tomatoes were tasty but only 3 slices for $12! Second, I ordered the catfish special w greens. The catfish had a good taste but it was covered in bbq sauce,...no...it was swimming! The bbq sauce over powered the fish. It was a strong sauce for a delicate protein. The greens that it was served with was not cooked properly, very tough and chewy. Could not slice greens w a fork as they were too tough. The waitress was friendly and attentive (that's why I gave two stars and not one). She did at least remove the fried green tomatoes and my fish dinner and gave us (party of 5) a piece of bread-pudding to share. read more

We didn't even get the opportunity to eat here. They only were serving brunch during Mother's Day until 3pm. We came at 220pm expecting to each lunch or dinner but they only had breakfast options with a BLT and a burger option. We were excited to try all the creole options they were known for , none of which were yet available because it was still brunch until 3pm. We ended up leaving & going to a different restaurant. I also waited at the bar for a good 5 mins while they prepared our table as the bartender walked past me multiple times as I attempted to get his attention to ask to try a beer. It's a very cool restaurant, decorated like it came straight out of New Orleans but the bartender was very rude & the lack of choice in food options was a huge turn off for me. Id love to come back and reevaluate at a time they had food other than breakfast ! read more

I was visiting from out of town, and I was looking for a new locally owner restaurant and bar for lunch and a beer. Most items on the menu sounded great. We ordered the burger with blue cheese (I forget the name) and a fried oyster po boy. The burger was of good quality and had a fresh baked bun which makes all the difference. The oyster po boy had a tasty wasabi mayo on it. The beer list was acceptable, but many of the taps on their wall were not being used. I like the location near the city right off the river as it was out of the city, but also super close. I would be happy to return. read more
