Wow! Rarely does really good food leave me speechless, but this place did that!! One word. Wow. The fried pickles were killer. These things were super crispy on the outside and al dente on the inside. Incredibly hard to do. The standard BRGR was fantastic. BRGR Bar's menu features some of the more 'out there' burger creations I've seen in a very long time. From bison to duck, you have to appreciate the mind behind the madness. Unfortunately as much I wanted to love this place and really anticipated this visit, what it turned out to be was a whole lotta meeeh. I went with the 'What the duck', which features a hoisin glazed duck patty, ginger-soy brussel sprout slaw, and gochujang aioli. Sounds amazing just writing it! But somehow nothing really stood out, which is strange given the uniqueness of any one of these ingredients. It's not often you get to have a cool milkshake with your burger, or any other time to be honest! Surely, this shall be the great redeemer where the burger fell short....or maybe not. The milkshake actually has all the right flavors but the consistency is super disappointing. Extra thick, resembling more an ice cream than milkshake. To be fair, I was warned by the waitress that it might be a little thick since the machine was just fired up. But also to be fair, perhaps the first batch or two should have been discarded? I do see the potential, and this entire dining experience could have easily gone in a more satisfying direction if I made a different burger choice(there were a few items that sounded better, but who passes up duck?!), and possibly if I walked in mid lunch(avoiding the whole first milkshake of the day fiasco). This entire review probably comes off as grumpy old grandpa, but for what it's worth, I would give BRGR another go. We were in the area doing some shopping with my mother and she wanted a burger so a quick search led us to Brgr. Plenty of parking and not very busy on a Friday afternoon. Our server was very nice and I appreciated that they came around and took details for contact tracing. The menu is loaded (obviously) with interesting burger choices. The beer selection looked good and their cocktail selection was pretty big. I'm not sure they make things as described on the menu as I ordered a Hadoukin cocktail and it tasted nothing like the promised drink (even double checked the bill to make sure I got the wrong thing). It was super weak and not very tasty. My partner liked his beer though. For mains, we each ordered burgers. My mother (appropriately) went with the OO-Mommy. She really liked the onion rings. I went with the Reuben and found it just okay but really enjoyed the brisket. My partner ordered the Off the Hook which featured tuna. He loved his burger. My mother went with standard fries and they were by far the best at the table. My partner got the waffle fries and they were way over cooked and pretty bland. I went with the poutine and it was so bad. For $4 it was not worth it. It wasn't traditional poutine despite the menu claiming it was. It had melted (microwaved, I'm sure) cheese and definitely not curds and a thick brown gravy that was heavy, tasteless and pretty gross. Definitely would not order anything but the basic fries there again. I'll add the pickles with all the burgers were delicious. I honestly think it was overpriced for what we received. The cocktail was not good and the poutine and waffle fries were not good at all. I'd probably rate this closer to a 2.5 but the tasty burgers are unique and redeemed the meal. read more

Okay, so let's start with the positives. The milk shake (the Oreo boozy one) was delicious. I slurped that down so damn fast. The bf was a big fan of the spicy pineapple margarita. He said it was everything the menu claimed it to be. And you must get the cheese and bacon fries as your side. Yum! The mediocre: The service was friendly but on the slower side. There were definitely opportunities for more water and we waited a bit to order. The quality of the meat was fine. Not overly greasy and cooked to medium, just as we expected. The not-so-good: I ordered a Build Your own burger. Of the various toppings I included was bbq sauce. Unfortunately, it seemed that was all I added. I couldn't taste the cheese, bacon, lettuce, or tomato. Just a bbq-soaked bun. There was no scraping it off once it was saturated. Bummer. The definitely not good: The prices! For two burgers, two margs, and one boozy milkshake we doled out $75. I don't mind spending that, but not on very mediocre food. We don't live in the area but wouldn't be back if we did. read more

What a fun place! Great apps, great beverage list (including many great beers & adult milkshakes) and a whole list of delicious burgers to try. We had the buffalo brussels & philly cheese steak egg rolls to start. The brussels were incredible! We've tried them at three restaurants in Maine and New Hampshire, and can conclusively say that New Englanders know how to fry up some brussel sprouts. These were my favorite, and the first time I've seen them offered in conjunction with a hot buffalo sauce. The philly cheese steak egg rolls were okay. They tasted good, but were a little too greasy for my liking. I had the Oreo adult milk shake and my girlfriend tried the peanut butter whiskey and fluffernutter. They were a fun option, haven't seen drinks of this variety offered before. With that said, I think I'll have my whiskey and my milkshakes separately going forward. They weren't bad by any means, but sweet and boozy and frozen isn't my jam. I tried the bison burger and my girlfriend had the double stack traditional burger. The burgers were great, first time having bison, couldn't really differentiate it too much from beef, it was a little less greasy and had a smokier flavor than the beef. We understand the challenges of Covid on the restaurant business. That is why bad service and food are so disappointing. We waited over an hour for a "high top" that ended up being the bar. The bartender was not friendly at all. The bar whole place was pretty gross. The hostess barely wiped down the counter between people and did not touch chairs or other surfaces. The bathroom was overflowing with paper towels. The bar and rest of the restaurant looked like they were moving with unpacked boxes everywhere. The food was just plain terrible, fried pickles were a mass of poorly flavored batter. Cheesesteak egg rolls were average. That said, paying $16+ for a burger when it was a) cold b) not great and c) the only item the menu offers (it is strictly a burger joint) you start to wonder if a $12 burger somewhere else was a better idea. It seems on the outside that it's just another corporate eating establishment but this location in Portsmouth, NH is exceptional. It is the wonderful combination of great, friendly service and high quality food. The staff is all smiles whenever anyone enters. They greet each and every patron immediately and do their very best to make eating there a great experience. Lean burgers on their own are healthy if you avoid the extra fat that is optional. But they have great salads too and I often have their house salad with the seared Ahi Tuna which is very healthy. I do allow myself the occasional burger but I leave off the unnecessary sodium and fat. They are very happy to make a burger for me exactly as I request and it is always perfectly done. You can taste that it is very high-quality beef. No skimping here. It's great to find a restaurant where they understand the secret to success is great food. Even the french fries are very high quality cooked in truffle oil which greatly enhances the flavor. I'm not supposed to eat those but I usually allow myself 4 or 5 as the smell is too wonderful to resist. It is very casual dining at either a table or the bar. It has a great neighborhood vibe and many of the patrons are regulars like me. And they know us all and greet us with great enthusiasm. They always thank me profusely when I stop by for my weekly meal. But really the pleasure is all mine. A perfectly delicious and nutritious meal every time and right in my own neighborhood. Menu was available via a scan of a QR, and later I saw there was a paper menu. Clean floors and clean tables are a plus. Choices a plenty, you can make your own as well, but the bison burger (on the menu it's the up in smoke) with tater tots.
