We stopped in for lunch today. The restaurant was completely full, however the staff did an outstanding job establishing a safe environment for patrons. Service was prompt and attentive. It did not take long before our server took our order. Since it was the weekend, and we were having a late lunch, this was a good opportunity to try a couple Bloody Mary's. The drinks were fine, however they lacked flavor. The mix used was more about creating spice or heat, rather than making the drinks tasty. However, this is a burger bar, and the focus here is on the food. I did a build your own burger with beef, bacon onion jam, gruyere cheese, and their special sauce. For my side dish I took advantage of the situation and ordered poutine. The quality of food was frankly, outstanding. The entire meal was extremely satisfying. While the burger was fantastic, I think I actually enjoyed the poutine more. While I normally do not reduce my rating because of cost, I have to say that the meal was a bit expensive. Additionally, the quality of the drink was disappointing. Having said all of this, I could have very easily given this a five star review, as the quality of the burger warranted that. But there are other options in the Portsmouth area that provide a similar experience at a more reasonable cost. Not an outstanding experience. First of all -its LOUD inside, really loud, obtrusively loud. Our server was all smiles and charm when she took our order and then disappeared. Someone else brought out our food. I watched here walk around the dining room, schmoozing with two tables at opposite ends of the dining room. Never stopped by our seats once, never asked how we liked the food, never asked if we needed anything else. She failed our cardinal rule - we call it the "check-back". On the plus side, the $10 adult milk shake (Thin Mint) was decadently terrific! My $6 Allagash White draft was cold and excellent. My $12 Cobb Salad was kind of strange, it was served on a split head of Romaine and grilled. Kind of over-grilled because the ends were black and charred. It was served on a small plate, so cutting it was kind of difficult. All in all, It was OK. So combine the loud noise inside with the inadequate service, and you can see why it got 2 stars. Plusses? Beers, delicious. Burgers, superb. Truffle fries, ricotta stuffed potato tots..amazing. Nutella, graham cracker, marshmallow fluff shake, so good, but so bad for you. My bf got the "up in smoke," loved the onions and avocado. There are soo many delicious burger choices, had a hard time deciding. But, there is literally a burger for everyone, so you'll definitely find something you'll want, if not, build your own. I ended up with the "four horseman burger," which sounded like it was supposed to be extra spicy, but it wasn't. Still yummy though. Also, upgrade your fries, you're welcome. We stopped here for some drinks (they were great!), and to sit with our two dogs. The beer was nice and cold, and my wife got "The Ruby" grapefruit drink. We both loved The Ruby, and have started making them at home. They couldn't do enough for our dogs! They brought them a big bowl of cold water, without us even asking. They put us at a table that would give the pooches plenty of shade and space to lay down. They made it great for our furry buddies, and us! I guess I saved the best for last on this trip. Despite having amazing lobster rolls and fresh steamed clams in Maine I stopped here before flying back to FL. My gf chose the spot and I was skeptical as to why she'd choose a burger spot for our last dinner. After dining here you'll know just as I knew the second I bit into our starters what the hype was all about. I was in for a delicious ride. I devoured it, forehead sweaty and all (the jalapeños were no joke). Also if that wasn't enough the Parmesan truffle fries that came along were 5 star worthy themselves. Worth the extra bucks and I'm not a fry guy. Bill was $80 for 2 burgers, truffle fries and a side salad, 2 starters, 2 cocktails and a beer. Great if you ask me. Came here with my wife and two kids. I ordered the "Up in Smoke", my wife got the "Reuben", kids got the kids burger and chicken fingers. We all enjoyed our food, but it's overpriced for what you get. The up in smoke burger was quite small and smaller than my sons kids burger. Same with my wife's burger. I'm here to tell you about the terrible experience we had attempting to eat at BRGR Bar Saturday night. There were four of us that arrived around 6:30pm. The hostess tells us it's going to be a 45-minute wait, so my friend "Joe" gave his name and phone number was and told she would call him. Since the bar also had a wait list, we headed across the street to La Caretta to have some Margaritas while we waited for the hostess to call us. After almost an hour, our friend "Joe" called to check since he hadn't received a call and was transferred to a gentleman who told him that it would be another 20 minutes. Ok....that's cool, no problem - we kicked back and relaxed a while longer since La Carretta has such a lively, friendly atmosphere anyway, then headed over to BRGR Bar. This is where things got really strange... We walked back into the restaurant and were greeted by the same hostess who told "Joe" that she called him twice and he didn't pick up so we will have to wait another 20 minutes. Huh??? He pointed out to her that HE actually called HER and was told that our table wouldn't be ready for another 20 minutes. She immediately got very irritated and said something like "Actually, I know what happened.... I called the wrong Joe - there were actually two Joes and I called him instead." What??? Really? She then said something like "Look as you can see; we're slammed in here and I'm basically trying to run this place all by myself!" At this point, another member of our party decided to interject, and she stopped him and said something like "Look, I'm a 23-year-old who has it really hard and you're a middle-aged man that has it really easy!" She then storms off - where did she go? This is when a woman comes out (who we later find out was the owner) and immediately says "Leave my restaurant!" We were stunned - what is going on here?!? She's not even going to ask us what happened? Then a man comes out to provide backup (who we find out was the other owner - husband) and we're told that if we don't leave, they're going to call the police. At this point, this is so crazy, so we leave, and we are outside trying to figure out where we're going to eat, when the owner comes outside and orders us to "leave her property or she's calling the police!" WHAT THE HECK JUST HAPPENED?!? So.... we hopped back over the La Carretta (which was slammed by the way) and were immediately seated, and served by a very happy, friendly waitress. The food was prompt, hot and delicious. We asked the waitress why she was so happy, and she replied "Because it's a great place to work, and we just have fun here!" I'm wondering why that hostess at BRGR Bar was so miserable and why the owners seemed to be as well. We deserve an apology but I'm sure we won't get it. Instead, we will tell everyone we know how BRGR Bar treats paying customers! read more

I built my own burger with beef, buffalo sauce, cheddar cheese, and sautéed mushrooms. You can substitute the French fries for a salad, which I didn't but my wife did. She had the Sweet Home Avocado Turkey burger. The burgers were the perfect size, very juicy and tasty. Did I mention the French fries were seasoned to perfection? The best! I'm not a big drinker but if something sounds tasty I like to give it a try, and the pineapple jalapeño margarita exceeded my expectations and even got me to order a rare second! Really smooth tasting with a pleasant amount of spice. The biggest standout of our visit was the charred octopus salad, which my boyfriend and I each ordered our own of. I got mine with mixed greens rather than cilantro, and it was probably the best octopus dish I have ever had, and at a burger joint! I couldn't believe how perfectly it was cooked, and I was even more shocked to see the generous portion of octopus given to us for just 12 dollars per salad. (I saw a lot of reviews complaining about prices being high here and I don't know if it's just because I'm from Massachusetts but I was really pleased with how reasonable everything was??) We both ordered the Boom Boom burger: a duck patty with goat cheese, blueberry beet jam, pickled fennel, candied oyster mushrooms, and mixed greens. I have celiac and our bartender who was very friendly and attentive was also very accommodating and informed about my dietary restriction, which was really nice and made me want to come back even more. The one thing I would've done differently was order a burger with a beef patty rather than the duck patty- I wanted to try something new but we were both wishing we had gone with a beef or bison patty rather than the duck, just wasn't as wowed by it as everything else we ordered. Was in the area for a business trip and stayed at Marriott Residence Inn just above the BRGR Bar in March. Ordered their signature burger 'BRGR' with parmesan truffle fries and coke to go to enjoy in my room with TV, and it was the best burger-fries combination I've ever had so far. The buns on the burger were crispy outside and soft inside and everything sandwiched in between the buns were fresh and juicy. The fries were also crispy on the outside and soft and warm on the inside, with truffle aroma on every bite. The hostess who took my take out order was nice and friendly; she made sure the person packing my dinner knows I was waiting by the door. This place was suggested to me by my brother in law and I'm always on the lookout for a great burger joint, a place where it's a sin to put ketchup on your burger. BRGR bar may just be one of those places, well definitely in your top 10. I had the "up in smoke" burger. It was a ground bison patty with smoked Gouda, bacon, avocado, grilled red onions, lettuce and tomato. It had a hint of bourbon bbq but definitely not enough to over power the taste of the meat. It was juicy throughout, and seasoned well. If you're into this sort of thing, apparently all the beef is grass fed from Maine and the bison is of equal quality, sourced from hackmatack farm in Berwick, ME. I opted for salad over fries for the side as we also shared the "poutine" which was an order of fries covered in main cheese curds and brown gravy, I highly recommend trying these fries. The food was excellent, as was the service. If I have time I will definitely come back to try their "adult milkshakes". I was too full after the appetizer and meal. read more

We went here for the second time and last time we got burgers which were really good so we thought we would try out something different on the menu. We got the fried pickles and they were amazing. Very thin and seem homemade. The batter was so crisp and delicious and the aioli that came with it was great (save the rest for my French fries that came with my entree). The Nashville Chicken was really good (key if you ever had actual Nashville Chicken you will not get true Nashville Chicken anywhere but Nashville).
