3 1/2 out of 5. Fits the "Mom & Pop" definition to a T. Not bright and shiny new, but warm and friendly service in a "seen better days" environment. Nothing fancy, just home cookin'. The Chicken Fried Steak Breakfast was large enough to split and we did. If your tank is empty, this is the place to fill'er up.

Yummy - here's the menu too! Nice local diner Had omelettes and burritos and all the fixings. Good cups of coffee too!

    Loaded omelette.

Great Omelet! Plentiful portions and excellent fresh ingredients. Jokes are lame but well intentioned.

Still open! Sister and I stopped by for breakfast!

They are still open! Sister drove by and noticed they were open so we got there as soon as we could. Brian did not disappoint. The portions are massive and you can see the love Brian puts into cooking his food.

the sign for the restaurant! great sign!

This is an "american diner" in Great Falls of the "un ironic" category- i.e. unchanged since the 50s or 60s when it opened. So... uh... we were driving back from Glacier National Park and we decided to check out Great Falls for an afternoon (you can totally "do" Great Falls in a single afternoon, FYI). This was the place we selected for lunch based on... the sign? Great Falls has totally awesome signage and a downtown that looks like it was used for the town in Back to the Future- when Michael J. Fox went back in time? The hours are 8- 2PM and the amiable old woman behind the counter would like us all to know that Top Notch serves breakfast right till close, that the burgers are great and that you just can't get meals like the ones they serve at Top Notch. With the exception of the french fries- which were "fresh cut" and deliciously greasy as all hell, she was wrong about the food, which was nothing spech- straight up american dinner fare- where adventurous is jalapeno on your cheesburger. Nothing wrong with that , mind you, nothing wrong with that. CDW has the BLT and she most displeased with tbe bacon which was limp and, again, greasy (sense a trend?). As CDW said at the time, "Can't you at least get the bacon crisp at a place like this." Also featured an amusing conversation between (old, male, white) locals who were talking about how modern women are so "high maintenance"(their phrase!)

Top Notch is greasy, artery clogging, and perfectly tasty! Brian is always so nice and will chat with everyone, he also makes all of the food himself. The portions are MASSIVE. You can watch him make the pancakes right there (which are bigger than the plate) and the French Fries are cut from a potato about 2 seconds after you order them and are sooo good. I love to add gravy to my fries and he always finds some for me. They also have a stand at the State Fair where they sell deep fried pickles, oreos, anything that can be deep fried really- I've only ever tried the pickles but he always has a line!

The owner Brian on the right with a satisfied patron!

We stopped into this…read morespot in Loma, MT completely by chance while visiting the nearby American Prairie preserve, and we were delighted by the whole experience. The atmosphere is pure, authentic Montana--warm, welcoming, and full of local character. For a restaurant in this outback town, Ma's Loma Cafe is punching above its weight. The people were friendly, the coffee fresh and endless, the waiter attentive, and the atmosphere fun and very Montana. As for the food, it was much better than your usual small-town diner fare. The burgers were juicy and cooked perfectly, and the BLTs were loaded and delicious, homemade potato salad like grandma's. The real surprise, though, was their variety of Mexican food. They make all of their own, including salsas on-site, and you can really taste the Mexican flare. If you are traveling through Loma or exploring the American Prairie, do yourself a favor and pull over at Ma's Loma Cafe. Great food, wonderful people, and an inviting local feel.

Someone had recommended this place a couple of months ago that used to live in the area. Their iced tea and ranch were both homemade and they were awesome. I had breakfast there, and it was done to order. Staff were friendly and helpful and lots of things to look at in that place for fun. Also took a gander at the local newspaper, which is always interesting as you traveling through areas.

Sunday, Sunday out for a drive. Checking out places to see if we're alive. Hard to find many places…read moreopen on a Sunday but this is one. It's a kitschy "School booster" type of place where you might bump into the Archies. Sort of Pop's Chocklit shop in Riverdale kind of vibe. We went on a nice later afternoon drive towards the Tetons from Cutbank, but decided it was too far to get back in daylight and we wanted some wind off the water ions. We already took the pooch for a visit to the doggie park in Cutbank so we wandered over to Valier and Lake Frances the back way across the prairie. It was a nice drive and we passed a historic Merriweather landmark before we got to town. There was a campground and we watched a murmuration of geese flying over the lake. I was getting hungry and as usual my big nose found food. At first glance it looked closed but I could barely see the OPEN sign glowing through the tinted window and the parking lot was empty. We went in (around 5:00PM) and only 1 other person was there. "Did we miss the dinner crowd?" I asked 1/2 jokingly and the young guy behind the counter said they usually show up around 6 so they don't waste the daylight. We settled in at a table for 10 and ordered the mushroom Swiss burger. $11 and fries or baked potato was the side option. We went for potatoes. Nicely done and decent sized. The burgers were filling. The meat and cheese with cooked onions was good. The buns were just average but better than the Cutbank McDonald's looked. (We considered a Big Arch a couple hours before this) The place was clean, but I didn't check the plumbing and I didn't ask about other stuff. I had come to the town for a haircut a month ago and had noted the lake. (Recreational Water is scarce in Montana) Next time we'll have to check out the dam in Moscow. I hear there's boat rentals.
