This is a cool little venue and my first time to visit. A friend had an extra ticket and asked me to go knowing my goth roots. She was not wrong.. this place reminds me of all the small bars I grew up going to in the bay area. Since I wasn't familiar with either of the bands music, I can't really rate the sound. I did like the artists though and they had quite a fan base. The lights were crazy. I could only sometimes catch glances of the headlining artist but couldn't have explained what he looked like. I'm glad I'm not sensitive to strobe lights. I imagine this was the artists choice. All in all, I enjoyed myself and hope to catch more music here in the future. read more

I had not been to Brick By Brick for years up until a band we wanted to see played there a couple weeks ago. Typically, they host metal shows which isn't really my thing. We went there to check out a newer dark wave band called Ultra Sunn on a Friday night. Upon entrance, the place wasn't too crowded yet. We were briefly searched upon entering, as most concert venues do, but I was surprised as venues this small typically do not. Brick By Brick shouts out dive bar vibes, but as you can see from the drink menu, they do not offer dive bar prices. Anyway, when we walked in, we checked out the venue. There was a swag area in the back, along with a water cooler and cups, which is always a huge plus. When we went to order drinks, we were served quickly. I had a couple of margaritas that night. One bartender was definitely more skilled than the other, but I guess it all depends who's working that night. As the evening got more crowded, we were still able to get a good vantage point to watch the show. However, this wasn't a sold out show. I think sold out shows could definitely pose a problem at this venue. The positioning of the bar sort of creates an L shape, meaning that if you end up having to watch the show from far back, you would miss the portion of the stage that is blocked by the bar. Interestingly, our show ended just before 12:30 and, as soon as it was over, the house music blasted "closing time" and bright lights came on. They definitely didn't want anyone hanging around. That said, I wouldn't make a point to specifically go to Brick By Brick, but if there is a cool band playing, likely tickets would be reasonably prices, and the the venue is decent enough. read more

I usually come here once or twice a year for a few bands that make regular appearances in San Diego. Venue is small, parking is terrible, but the bands make it worth it. Staff is friendly with everyone I've encountered, they do ensure everyone's safety is a priority while still having a great time. read more

If you're into live music and have fond memories of going to SOMA, you'll likely enjoy this venue. It's got that same vibe but on a smaller, more intimate scale. The size of the venue brings the audience closer to the action, which is a huge plus. I came here to watch Survive Said The Prophet, an international (Japanese) rock band well-known for their hit songs featured in the anime Vinland Saga on Netflix. From the friendly security team to the bar staff, everyone was super welcoming and made the night I visited enjoyable. The drinks were just right, well-mixed and hit the spot, which is always a win. Parking can be a bit tricky since it's mostly street parking, so plan ahead. I lucked out with a spot right in front of the venue by arriving about 20-30 minutes before the show started. Overall, Brick By Brick is a chill spot to catch a live show and have a good time. If you're looking for a venue that combines great music with a laid-back, friendly atmosphere, this place is definitely worth a visit. read more

Came here for the Daft Punk Dance Party, didn't know what to expect but here was my take. AMBIANCE: Parking: Small parking lot but there's a lot of street parking, especially Morena Street. Seating: There are a few standing tables in the back and round tables for 2. Maybe for 15 people. Feels: It's somewhat close to the University of San Diego. It's not in a flashy area just your warehouses and some eateries here and there. the venue itself is pretty nice and spacious but depending on the event it can get packed. FOOD/DRINKS: They got some good choices here. They had themed drinks which was cool. It's a $15 minimum for card. There's no food. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Solid. All kind encounters. TL; DR OVERALL: 4.5 Stars! Solid. I digged this venue, parking was simple, entry fee was reasonable, and the acoustics were good. Hoping another good artist or tribute DJ comes in the area again. It's been ages since the last time I'd been to Brick By Brick and I can verify that very little has changed over the years. My latest visit had me checking out a band that I've been waiting to see for a while and even though they weren't headlining I still forked over about $20.00 in advance to enjoy the show. Man, it pains me to say that the sound was borderline terrible and it was only the skill of the band that makes me say this. There was a band on the lineup that was really, really bad, and the bad sound made them sound terrible. The band that I came to see was incredibly tight and that definitely helped improve things but still far from good... The drinks are affordable but the lines can get lengthy. Keep your eyes peeled when it comes to their concert calendar because every once in a while you'll see a band listed that you'd never expect. read more

Piss stained dive bar with a shitty stage and even shittier demographic. Some bigger named bands have played here, but this is usually where shitty local bands go to die. One that comes to mind is cascade effect. I saw them in 2024. Only thing memorable about their performance is their drunk guitarist exposing his ass crack every time he bent over. I was here on October 27 for the Taylor Swift 1989 listening party. I got there pretty early so that I can get good parking and I was able to get street parking right in front of the venue. Doors open at 9pm so there were maybe like 2 dozen people there when doors opened. The place is smaller than the House of Blues. Bathrooms are in the back, there's a bar in the middle, and the dance floor is in the front. The DJs were very cool and friendly. The music was loud and the place got pretty packed quick! The energy is a lot better here than at HOB. They had a costume contest and a lip sync contest which I was able to go up and lip sync my favourite Taylor Swift song! I paid $25 for my ticket but I would probably be back if there is another Taylor Swift event here. read more

This has to be the worst design for a concert venue I have ever seen. Bar takes up 1/3 of the inside and is positioned right in the middle of the room. Pit area due to bar is maybe 1/3 of the room and small. Ample seating in the back however because the bar, you can only see maybe 1/2 the stage from the back seats. Sound is below average even for small venue standards. Parking doesn't exist. Plan to park on the street or in another business parking lot, Signage everywhere warning that parking for brick by brick may get you towed. Smoking area on side. read more

Came for an event and parked in the lot that specifically says "Brick By Brick parking only" assuming it was for people coming to the venue. Staff came later and told us we aren't allowed to park her if we came for the event, we had to find street parking. If this was a staff only parking it should be labeled as such? It makes no sense to have a parking thats says its for the place but your guest can't park. Might as well label it staff only. Keep that in mind if you're coming, there is practically no parking at the street unless you come in super early. Not too accessible. read more

I dropped by here to see a min concert for some artists. The place was nice! Good space and chill environment, and the staff was welcoming.

Went to the Feid x Karol G event this past Saturday and it was such a letdown. The DJ must've been new, & for going at 11:30 there was no more than 30-40 people. A waste of $30... ended up going to Onyx and had a great time! I'll never be going back here read more

Great memories coming here over the years. The upgrades are fantastic, and I'm so grateful to see that this venue is still thriving! Very safe, friendly and well-managed. The sound last night was incredible, and I agree regarding the temperature in the room- it's comfortable. It's a spacious yet intimate venue, nearly spotless for a rock venue, and the bookers do a great job with the variety of gigs. Bartenders, door, and security were friendly and professional. People really like playing/coming here? You have people in front of the bar standing to watch the show (where there are no speakers and doesn't sound good at all in that area (let alone blocking the bar). It feels like when they sell-out a show, they over sell tickets because it's too tight to walk around to get to where you need to go. Besides that the sound is total shit. They had a up and coming band play a few nights ago and all we heard was feedback and crappy audio. This is supposed to be a venue or bar that just has some music on the side? You could have fooled me with amateur hour. They have the balls to charge $12 a beer at a dive bar on top of it. Tickets for a show should be $15 and beer $7 if you go off the quality of the venue. I definitely won't be back and I highly suggest people to stay away from this place (especially up and coming bands). You will get frustrated by production. I'm going to preface this by saying that I think my experience is a fairly singular one. It seems a lot of folks here on Yelp love this place for featuring metal bands, and that's great. From what I'm seeing, if that's what you dig then this is the place for you. Brick by Brick is a dark, divey venue that has a great underground vibe to it. This is not a fancy venue or even a lounge. There's graffiti and stickers on the dark walls, the stage is right up close and personal with the audience and the floors sort of give a bit when you walk on them. Having spent a fair amount of time in older bars in NYC, I dig this feeling. Unfortunately, the night I went something was up with the air circulation so it was easily 90 degrees plus inside the bar (even with giant fans going full blast). After spending a couple hours in the bar, I walked outside and felt like I had been roasted! This may be normal for the bar, just keep it in mind when you visit. The layout of the bar is pretty great. When you walk in there is a large open area with some bar seating. This space can pretty much be tailored for use as everything from a presentation space to a place to set up tables and sell merch. Beyond that to the left is another sitting area (which is slightly more well lit) and the rest room. The center of the venue has the bar which then leads you to the stage area on the right side. It's a good layout and I can see some really good shows being put on here. The staff was very cool and I enjoyed my time there with friends. If you're into heavy metal and dive bars, this place is worth checking out. read more

This is my favorite venue in SD. For a small venue, they have a decent-sized stage! It's super easy to get up to the front and there's no barrier, so the artist is literally right in your face. If you're into death metal, obscure artists, and like to support your local bands, this is the place for you. Bathrooms are always clean, they have a small, but decent-sized smoking area, and free water by the entrance. Security is chill and the owner is a nice guy. The building just needs AC. read more

I don't get down here much, but I'm glad we came down for Lords of Acid Feb 23. Even though it's a dark little dive, it's actually a great place to see a show. I really love that the bartenders make top-notch cocktails in addition to the large beer selection. It isn't really what you would expect from a "dive". The sound was pretty good, lighting great and the show was a lot of fun. While they weren't on, we noticed they had pinball machines, so that already makes us like the place more! Brick by Brick has been here for a bit they've had a good amount of radical bands play here and before this visit it had been quite a wile since I've been here! Tonight was Korpiklaani a awesome band from Finland took the stage and played for the crowd of people rocking out. The sound was good vocals were clear and the band sounded great! We had a blast in the crowd as this was a good one with an awesomely fun circle pit of dancing! The bar had a decent amount of beers on tap and the best part of that is that the fist one was only $3 with Yelp Check-In! Save yourself a few bucks for the next one! The staff here was nice and we overall had a great time here enjoying beers and live music. The only real downfall to this venue is parking it's pretty much in a really industrial area next to warehouses leaving not too much room for parking, we found that you can often find spots on the street so just cruise around until you get lucky! I'm sure it's only a matter of time before we return here for another great show and have a rockin good time! See you in the pit! read more

It's been a long time since we've seen a show here. Mostly because the last time we bought tickets for a show at Brick By Brick, they closed down and the bands had to move to a different venue. Brick By Brick didn't bother letting those who purchased tickets know in advance; we found out by accident. Anyway, a band that we love had a tour stop in San Diego, which was great because the last several times we saw them, we had to drive up to LA. That they were in our city made it a no-brainer - we were going. The night of the show, we were stuck in one of our summer heat waves. We were standing in line with a bunch of other metal lovers, and I know we weren't the only ones dreaming about entering the cool, A/C-blasted confines of the venue. Only, it wasn't to be. We walked in (after a through once-over by both security at the front and the ticket-taker at the door [who tried to keep my phone]) and immediately realized that the A/C wasn't on. We weren't yet worried - we figured it was early, and that it'd kick in sooner rather than later. Right when we got in, we made a bee-line for the merch tables. We were chatting with the girl working Armored Saint's table, only to find that they weren't set up to take cards for purchases, so the hubs ran over to the ATM five steps away. Turns out the ATM would only allow him to withdraw $40. It gave him the ridiculous message, "You can withdraw a minimum of $20, a maximum of $40", and we had to add bank fees to the mix. What the heck kind of machine puts that kind of limit on withdrawls? $400, yes - I understand. $40? Get real. Anyway, we make our purchase and I decide now's the time to use the restroom. And boy howdy, am I ever glad I went early! The women's restroom is a two-holer, and there was a lady in the smaller stall that was having a heckuva time that night. She was in there for a while (and didn't wash her hands when she finally walked out.) There is no door leading in, not that it matters much - just an observation. It was clean-ish by the time I got there, but I'm imagining all kinds of icky scenarios as the night wore on. So, bladder emptied, we wandered towards the stage, where the opening band was just getting started. Remember how I said the A/C wasn't on when we walked in? It wasn't on by the time the band started, either. The lead singer made several jokes about how it was hot up in there, to no avail. The bassist had a rather powerful fan that he had set up to cool him off, and at one point - no lie - he picked it up and turned it towards me because he saw that I was struggling with the heat. Me - a nobody in the audience, doing nothing other than standing appreciating the music - I was in danger of succumbing to the heat. I do appreciate the bassist for hooking a sister up (he said, "I never play a show without this!"), but the venue absolutely should have had that place cooled down long before the music started. What else can I say? The sound was great, it's an intimate venue. They only have one way in and one way out, which can be a cluster. And - I don't understand this - they won't let you leave once you've been "checked in". Why do they bother stamping you if they won't let you leave? I'll come back, of course - they're bringing in the bands we want to see, after all. I just hope they have some kinks worked out. read more

Went here for an ABBA/ 70s event in Jan! Parking was a bit of a challenge but if you don't mind crossing the street there's plenty of street parking on Morena Blvd. Vibes and music were great and my friend group had a lot of fun. I will say however that this place got packed so quick and it was very hard to move around. I believe the event opened at 9 and by our arrival around 10 it was very crowded. They had water out but I didn't check out the bar situation. For reference I am 5 ft and had quite a bit of trouble navigating around due to how congested it was inside. I'm talking shoulder to shoulder & breathing in other peoples hair. It was either I try to move through the crowd for water or remain with my friends. At some point I had other people's drinks spill ON my head due to how close we were & how hard it was to move. I think it started to clear out by 12a and we had more wiggle room then. Floors were (understandably) sticky af with a bit of trash on the floor as well- would not recommend open toed shoes/ heels. I would come back but maybe not for an event as big/ crazy as this one was. I went to this place this past Friday for Jungle Rot, I'm not familiar with the band but my fiancé and I live down the street and we enjoy metal music so we decided to check it out. The music was good and the drinks were flowing and not overpriced, which was good. As I'm about to order myself a beer the woman behind the bar (I'll later find out she's the GM) offers my fiancé a canned water, which are not free. I suggested to her that I'd rather save a few bucks and get her a water from the self service station, at that point she really needed it. The GM (I didn't get the witch's name) begins to yell at me feminist remarks for no apparent reason. I had come to the conclusion that she either had a problem with my appearance (I'm heavily tattoo'd, muscular and handsome) or she had the hots for my lady and put me down for nothing more then because she was jealous, we were then asked to leave. I return two days later on Sunday for Angelmaker, again with my lady and one of her girlfriends and were immediately targeted by a black woman security guard for no apparent reason. Myself and the GM had a conversation upon entering the venue I felt like I was talking to my mom she was very unprofessional, we are all adults here and just because you run a venue doesn't mean I have to kiss your ass. Within 5 minutes of paying the girls we're both kicked out because one of them had ordered a beer, it was beyond me. It's a 21+ venue that serves but allegedly the security guard told them they were not allowed. I was shocked! Anyway they went home and Angelmaker slapped. The GM ended following me around all night as to try to provoke me to say something to her it was a joke! read more

Checked out this place over the weekend to see the Black Queen. I honestly really liked this venue, even though a lot of the music options were not quite my cup of tea. It was spacious, good ventillation, great beer selection, the bathrooms were not terrifying for a music venue, and the size of the stage allows room for intimacy with whoever is performing. I also love the insta worthy neon sign that reminds you where you are. Depending on the band, I would definiately revisit this venue. read more

Great venue, huge bar albeit with at times not to friendly bar tenders. Watched a couple people stand at the bar waiting to get a berrr but bar tenders just walked on by but not helping anyone. It was very oddddd and surprising no one gave them a WTF rant over it cuz it was most def we'll deserved. Stage is pretty big with a large floor for the peeps. Def pop in if u see a band u like. But maybe get trashed first at the much friendlier bar called Sidecar down the street. read more

I feel like Brick by Brick is the equivalent to your creepy, 'rocker' uncle who used to be in a band on the Sunstrip Strip in the early days of hair metal. He still has the passion, but his buttcheeks are sagging, he's got a beer gut, and his flowing locks resemble a lone tumbleweed heading east through the sands of Salton Sea. I think it goes without saying that Brick by Brick has seen it's glory days... but they still chug along and provide some pretty fun nights. It seems like 'Canes and the Brick are pretty hell bent on this whole cover band craze, as easily 4 nights out of the week are dedicated to bands trying their damnedest to sound just like Ted Nugent or Foreigner. Last night was no exception. Saw Deeper Purple (Deep Purple cover band) and this new buzzworthy group of ladies called Chelsea Girls. The latter consisted of members of Hole, Nashville Pussy, The Donnas and Eagles of Death Metal... while Deeper Purple was essentially the creepy uncle I described earlier in this review. Good times, but like doing lines of Pixie Sticks, there's only so much I can handle. Chelsea Girls were pretty rad, though. They're from Hollywood and each one of those women could kick my ass. Rock 'n Roll! Keep doin' what you're doin', Brick. You seemed to have carved a niche in the tribute band arena... and about once a year, I'm down for a wild night of cover songs. Just wish it didn't cost $20 to hear recycled arena rock from aging weekend warriors. read more
