I really like this place despite the parking issues it presents (mostly street) and it's location. It's got that underground vibe to it, and if you have been to Gilman Street in Berkley it has that kind of vibe but way more grown up. Very DIY and fun to just hang out. Great bar selection, great little stage and upper terrace seating, outdoor patio (converted from part of the parking lot) with some seating. There is a lounge area that has old couches and stuff in it with a TV and a pool table nearby which gives this public venue a very private feeling. Great for a rock n roll show. read more

From NY, was told this was a metal bar. Took the $10 cab ride to find out the place was closed... On a weekend night! Don't waste your time. Should have done more research outside my conversation that might, it happens they are closed two days a week and close at midnight another night. Seems like more of a 'venue' that is around for shows then an actual bar. Will check out Cherry Bomb while I'm still in town tonight. read more

They get in lots of fun touring bands / Nationals all the time, the owners and staff are musician(s) / music lovers so what better of a place that is trying to provide great entertainment at an affordable price. They have pool tables, video games and even an ear plug and condom machine. The club is centrally located across the street from a taco shop, Italian restaurant and of course the best BBQ joint in town, Smokin' Bulls BBQ so you can always have access to good eats. The club also has a happy hour 7 days a week so you can get there early to enjoy a drink before the show starts. What more can you ask for??? Long live Rock n' Roll and Brick by Brick!!!! If you are in a local band, this is the place to get gigs in San Diego. It may be old, dingy and not as hip as your newer live music venues in town but, Brick is a spot that takes care of local bands. The sound guys here put effort into giving you a good mix, even if they have never heard you before. I have seen international touring acts here including A Perfect Circle ! many years ago before they released their first album, it was a great show and it sounded good considering they do not have a modern up to date line array pa. They make the best of what they have and that goes for their bar as well. Reasonably priced drinks and friendly bar staff make all the difference. I even have to make mention of the door staff who are pretty mellow and don't act like Door Nazis. It may not be as clean and fancy as House Of Blues but, Brick By Brick is one of San Diego's best "live music venues", hands down. read more

One of my favorite venues in San Diego. There's easy (street) parking if you get there early enough. The venue is small yet accommodates a good amount of people. I only wish there were more bathroom stalls- there is always a line (for both genders). The drinks are also pretty good and reasonably priced. read more

Came here over the weekend partially because I've always wanted to check this place out - a San Diego institution that's been around forever - and because there was finally a band I was also curious to see as well. It's right off Morena Blvd just a little ways north from Old Town. Don't bother trying to park in their parking lot unless you're in one of the bands and need to unload equipment. I parked on Buenos Avenue on the other side of Morena Boulevard. There weren't too many cars there and I was lucky enough to find some legitimate parking so it was all good. Right behind Bull's Smokin' BBQ on the corner of Buenos and Morena you can see the Brick by Brick logo rising above the restaurant. Bar itself is a backwards C-shaped dive with the stage at the top, bar in the middle and merch table and bathroom at the bottom. Bathroom wasn't too bad for a dive. Bartenders were very friendly and attentive. I had a Metal Mary - the Brick By Brick version of a bloody mary with 2 olives on a toothpick in it. There was an opening act - forgot the name but they were boring and had an attitude about the fact that the audience (about 20 people during their set - including staff) were not surrounding the stage, cheering their name, throwing underwear, lighting lighters, banging heads, or singing along with all their songs. Referring to the audience as "pussies" will not change anybody's mind about the abomination they had to tolerate while waiting for the acts they actually came to see. Just sayin'. Next up was a one-man band called Author & Punisher who was quite a spectacle to watch. I first saw him from a distance at the bar when he started playing and all I saw was this guy with a mask spinning this thing that looked like a drum. It looked like some potter spinning his pottery wheel while suffering a psychotic episode. Then I went to the stage area and from a closer vantage point I watched what looked like some villain from a sci-fi movie making evil futuristic music by pushing and pulling all sorts of gadgets and singing into masks that distorted his voice. A mindblowing performance - music itself was some sort of industrial doom metal on acid. Finally, the act I came to see was a husband and wife team - band called Jucifer. They live in their RV and tour the country and play shows all the time. They play with a crazy array of multiple speaker cabinets that are actually all used to create a crazy loud wall of sound. While they played, one of the staff stood right next to me with what I assume was a decibel meter. I saw the number 125 and chuckled. Guinness Book of World Records claimed Deep Purple was the loudest band in 1972 at 117dB. Of course, loudest band titles have gone to bands such as Manowar, Blue Cheer, Disaster Area, Kiss, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, My Bloody Valentine, Leftfield, Gallows and even Hanson (FFS) - each turning up their amps to 11 and playing a few decibels louder than the band before them. Except those were sound levels in huge theaters and arenas. This was in a little dive the size of your average Applebee's. I'm sure it was even loud in the bathroom. LOL. I wore earplugs of course. Some folks left after a few minutes because they didn't have any and could no longer handle the volume. Luckily the venue does have earplugs for sale. The concert itself was a full blown assault on the senses - audio was like that scene from Back To The Future where Michael J Fox gets blown backwards by the speakers into the bookshelf - you could feel the sound the entire time. A blinding light show made sure you could occasionally see guitarist Gazelle Amber Valentine do the metal long hair spinning thing but never really see her face. They rocked out the audience for just a little less than an hour. Good times, good times. Rock over London. Rock on Chicago. Wheaties, breakfast of champions! read more

A-Ok....guess that means exactly what it says. I could be a real fan because I love a good show just about more than anything...almost anything ;) The place is small and intimate which is great but the lay out does not necessarily provide a comfortable group enviroment as it seperates the pool tables and half the bar from the stage. Aside from that, the service was not memorable but that is good and bad. I would defenitely still go there again. read more

With the lack of local clubs that cater to local music shows I appreciate the effort in re opening the Brick by Brick. New owners and management have brought hope to a dying scene in all genres of music. Given a little time to regain a foothold in the musical landscape this will become a premier "Hot Spot" again. fab night. saw my ex's show and it was a nice venue. 10$ cover, fine. got a cocktail. sat at a table and promptly my drink was spilled by a tippy table. goddamnit. lip-gloss prints on my glass from the previous user that hadn't been cleaned off all the way. eeew. i put my mouth on the rim of my martini and could FEEL the texture of the gloss hardened on. exchanged my spilled, glossed drink for fresh clean one. overall it could have been worse. typical bar venue. read more

Have a blast playing here every time (Comfort In Rage). The sound guys are usually always on point and the vibe is always good. The best thing about this place is, all our friends love to go see us play there because the drinks are good! Unlike some other venues in town, if you order a drink, you are going to get a very good drink, that really helps every bands crowed stick around and check out more of SD's local talent! If you're into Heavy Metal, this place is heaven! Great live bands, powerful sound, beautiful lighting, inexpensive beer and hundreds of metalheads with long hair! This is not bad for a live venue. It is mostly a metalhead/hard-rocker club, but it is used for other stuff as well. The Dragon Lounge normally has its anniversary nights here, and I saw some acts like Scapegoat Wax (twice), Afroman, and a 91X promo show with the Editors (Ladytron was supposed to be there that night, but didn't). The drink prices are alright. Unfortunately, there is no longer a re-entry. That means you could not go to JV's between band sets. read more

This place is pretty cool. Drinks are average priced, low cost live music venue, and it's a nice atmosphere. I've been here twice and had a great time both times. I only give it a 4 because I am going to compare it to the Belly Up which in my opinion is the only 5 star venue in San Diego. I really do enjoy this place and recommend going here. I like it more than the House of Blues since it's not super crowded and drinks aren't an arm and a leg. I was there recently to photograph a friend playing at their Acoustic Alliance show. Now I realize this place isn't generally an acoustic venue, but I think they did a pretty nice job of accommodating to the genre. Sound was decent, staff is nice, and the staff is cool. They also had no issues with me photographing the show, which was super cool. I realize it's a rock club, but my only complaint would be the smell of the bathroom was pretty overpowering. read more

First of all I don't drink alcohol so as far as drink quality goes, I am the last person to ask. However, I do enjoy shows there. It is nice to have a smoking patio that has easy access although I wish it was bigger. They have great local bands that play and even bands from out side S.D. that are too obscure for Casbah or other venues. If the band stinks, you get to play pool with your friends. The management is cool and I don't feel like I am constantly being ignored when I order my caffeine at the bar. It is a dive, but it works for me! read more

Monday nights are great for metal heads and the weekends range from rock to heavy metal with an occasional country band thrown in. Had a decent experience here. Ive seen it packed and I have seen it completely empty... hit or miss i guess. But they have good drink specials usually, and sound qualiy is pretty good. Plus there is pool and video games to pass the time while the band you are not there to see is playing. I dont think anyone ever goes to BXB to just hang out... the location isnt all that great but if you are dead set on seeing some live local music, you really cant go wrong. read more

well its been a busy week 4 places 4 lots of music and its only Friday. Brick by brick is a little rustic especially after being at the belly up, but its a great place, a little divey....I notice there were a lot of PBR drinkers, so I certainly was at home. Only down side is there is never enough bar staff at this place but they are fast workers so you cant blame them. What I really like is the music here is always different and the vibe is usually good. read more

Our Friday night was ruined thanks to the worst customer service by a ticket monkey/moron! We went to see a friend's band. Unfortunately, we never got to step foot in the venue. While standing in line my husband hear a couple in front of us did not have tickets and no cash wanted to pay with a credit card. My husband jokingly told them he would sell them two extra tickets we had extra. Immediately, the ticket monkey accused us of scalping tickets. Does he know the definition of scalping tickets: To resell at a price higher than the established value. We did not receive a penny from the couple there for Not scalping. Ugly words were exchanged when the ticket monkey would not listen to reason. He told us he was running the show and we lost him a sale therefore we would not get in. Needless to say we will never step foot in that place again and we can kiss $120 good bye. I also contacted the venue via email and have yet to heard back from anyone. For me, Brick By Brick is that great "intimate" divey venue. I like to watch good ol' punk rock shows at a place like this, not some fancy, pretentious, fake atmosphere. I like the gritty, realness of the place. I've been there quite a few times, and I never have trouble getting drinks from the bar! it's almost over-tended, which I personally love. :p The prices are reasonable, and the staff is always friendly! The new ownership has made huge improvements and seem genuinely committed to returning "The Brick" to its proud glory and rightful place at the top of local venues. The staff is wonderful and friendly, the talent buyer is the best in SD and a pleasure to work with and the new sound system is a huge upgrade. The venue is spacious, so it hardly ever gets crowded. The metal marys are a must. It's a bad ass drink that punches you back. Kudos.

I went to this hole in the wall to see a friend of ours play. The couple we were with are very easy going and like to help out local bands by purchasing tickets & such. I had never been to this place nor will I ever go back. One reason bad customer service, second what kind of establishment doesn't take debit or credit we live in a society that a person can use their personal cell phone to charge credit or debit cards. The person who was taking tickets at the door was rude yelled at a few people that were standing in line. He made a scene with the couple we were with & threaten them, then kicked us out for giving our extra two tickets to the guy who didn't have cash only a credit card he proceeded to yell & use profanities at our friend telling him he messed up a sale for him. Needless to say we never got a chance to step foot inside & we missed our friend's band playing. I will tell everyone I know never to go to Brick by Brick. It's a Shit hole and doesn't deserve people's hard earned money spent in their establishment. read more
