Close up of the ole Smokey Joe Sandwich
    Bailey B.

Well, I've been to this location twice now and it seems I really do just feel "meh" about it. I wanted to try it again after the first mediocre experience since the reviews were so great, but I think I stand by my opinion. This deli is in downtown Decatur. Despite being downtown, I think parking is fairly plentiful and accessible, though ymmv. It's a fairly large restaurant with a pretty heavy bar/tavern feel. Menu items are mostly soups and sandwiches, with a few exceptions. The decorations are kind of cute, with some Decatur-themed things (like a poster-sized Monopoly space advertising the deli itself). I've found the clean level acceptable but not astonishing on my visits. Service is okay. Despite a fairly long delay between my visits, I think I had the same waitress twice. She was nicer the second time -- first time I felt sort of like I was burdening her. You seat yourself and it can take several minutes before someone comes by to check on you, even when not terribly busy. Once you're noticed, I felt both times a little rushed to place my order and pay, though that could be because I arrived around 1:45 and they close at 3. Still plenty of time to eat and scoot imo but I get it. Both times, I got the half sandwich and soup option because I like that portion size for lunch. I also got the chicken "la la" (enchilada) soup as my soup, and I will say this is the best thing I've tried there. A little spicy, a little creamy, lots of beans and corn. It's solid! The soup comes with a square of jalapeño cornbread, which on both visits was quite cold and very dry. Crumbling it on the soup helps if you're into that but I kind of like the soup on its own. For sandwiches, I've tried their take on a grilled cheese as well as the "Smokey Joe," which has smoked turkey, cheese, thousand island, lettuce, and bacon. No tomatoes for me. Both sandwiches were FINE, but not any better than what you could make at home quite comfortably. I get that sometimes you want something simple fairly quickly, but I was just a little disappointed. The turkey sandwich in particular had decent flavor but was constructed such that the sourdough bread was sopping wet and disintegrating by about bite two, which made it very hard to eat. The bacon was also very disappointing, thin and not very crispy. Again, nothing particularly bad here, but not a place I'd really go out of my way to return to. If I come back, I'll continue trying different sandwiches to find one that suits me.

First visit, came here for lunch and the place was packed. Had to grab an open seat at the bar. It is a full bar with several draft offerings and a couple TVs for your viewing enjoyment. Bartender was busy, but ultimately, service ended up being adequate. I ordered the Thompson turkey Reuben with a side of potato salad. Solid sandwich with good flavors, potato salad was excellent. The Brick offers several food options in a local tavern atmosphere. I would definitely come back.

Came here for lunch. Everything was fantastic! My friend got a spicy bloody Mary and she said it was really good. For lunch, I ordered the downtown hoagie and my friend ordered rob's rib eye sandwich. We then gave each other half. Both sandwiches were delicious! I would order either one again. For an upcharge you can get a cup of soup. I got the chicken la la. It was delicious! My friend got the cheese soup and she really liked it. If I lived here, I would come here all the time. The food was fantastic, service was great, and just a nice atmosphere.

All they offer are split sandwiches and fry baskets. What a shame if they had a larger food offering one could actually take and utilize the outdoor patios and enjoy an evening out. Puny food puny service heavy prices. Too bad. Beware though competition is coming this place not be around long. .. zzz xxx. Bcc can. Be. He was

Luv sandwich with loaded potato soup

There were so many sandwiches to choose from and all looked delicious! I ordered the club which had the perfect ratio of meat to bread to cheese. It was excellent. The potato soup was good but a little on the bland side. A sharper cheese & a little more bacon could kick it up a notch. I wish wish wish this place had some fries or onion rings for a side and maybe a few appetizers. The beer selection was a combination of some local drafts and some staple brews from the larger breweries. Excellent service and atmosphere.

The food quality was not great. Very overpriced for sandwiches . All you get is a sandwich. You have pay extra for chips, fries.

Quick take: food was pretty good, decent prices, great drink, will come back!…read moreCame in around 5pm on Friday 2/27 and only one person at the bar. Nice lady told us to seat ourselves where we want, GM initially waited on us. He was friendly. Wife said he made the margarita and it was great! A little stronger than my wife likes, just under what I like. After a couple sips she loved it! He recommended fried catfish and the ribeye as favorites. We tried both. Ribeye: cooked nicely, not seasoned enough for my taste. I would order and try this again, $26, with two sides. Steak was tender and was a nice cut of ribeye. Salad was solid. Mashed potatoes ok. Could have used a piece of toast I think. Next time a different side from mashed taters. Catfish: GREAT! Light, fluffy, fried perfectly. Hush puppies were good, a little thick though. Fried okra was also great! Cole slaw could be hit or miss for folks.. i thought it was good, wife didn't like. Should have come out in mashed potato sized bowl to eat easier. Some dislikes: 1. Steak not seasoned well. But I'd try it again. 2. Some things missing off of our plates initially (tartar sauce, mashed potatoes.) No big deal but if it was busier I think we may not have seen them for a while. 3. Person bringing single bowl of mashed potatoes holding with one hand, palm down over potatoes. Pretty sure it looked like hand touched top of potatoes. 4. Not sure if this is a smoking establishment but a guy at the bar lit a cigar. But he must've been asked to take it outside because he put it out. Glad he did because we had a baby. Not sure why he thought he could smoke it in there if he hadn't before. Overall, good visit and I look forward to trying more things and eating that catfish again.

First visit and it will not be the last!…read more After looking at reviews and photos I knew I was ordering the salmon with cabbage and rice. Salmon was seasoned perfectly, had a nice crispy char on the outside while the fish was moist and tender. Only thing that could have made it better was another piece! The cabbage was soft and flavorful, but not overly seasoned, nice comfort cooking style. The rice was perfectly cooked, had hints of I believe saffron and maybe liquid smoke(?) whatever it was the rice really stood out my only complaint would be there wasn't enough. My wife had the grilled shrimp with sauce and she was very happy, they were cleaned, cooked well, and she really enjoyed the sauce. She had the same two sides and also said a bit more rice would have been nice. For desert we had their deep fried cheese cake, it's almost like a cannoli and cheesecake had a baby that was deep fried. The dough was softer than cannoli but the apple drizzle paired very well with the dessert. We plan to return, but it will be hard to order anything other than that salmon! Great location across, right across the street from Princess Theater.

Everybody I know loves their Granny's collards best, but I swear that these are truly outstanding. Ollie and Finn's Counter…read more Tucked away in a little brewery near the Columbia square is this little sandwich shop. I have been recommended this place by multiple people throughout the years and finally got a chance to give it a try. (Well, I say that but mainly because I go to Gold's Deli everytime I'm in Columbia. So it was time to share the love) They have a pretty large menu of various sandwiches, I wish I had grabbed a picture of them. I asked the cashier if she had to pick one sandwich which one would it be, she gave me a list of about 3 that all sounded amazing. The fourth she suggested was if you're overwhelmed or unsure just get the Italian. I LOVE Italian sandwiches so that is what I ended up with. Everything here is fresh so I waited about 5-10 minutes for my sandwich to get made. I will definitely be trying out some of the more adventurous creations next time but this was so good. This Italian has a freshness to it that I have a hard time describing but their olive oil blend is lovely, the olives, banana peppers and lettuce helped with that fresh taste as well I'm sure. The bread is incredible! It taste house baked, crisp outer crust with a pillowy interior. The house chips were also really good and salted perfectly. The inside is cool, it's a microbrewery and there's subtle like alien themes throughout? Overall can't wait to try it out again, stop by if you're ever down in Columbia!
