A month or so ago, we were in Decatur for an evening. Don't ask why. That evening we tried a restaurant downtown, that I reviewed, and on the way to the Cross Eyed Owl, we noticed how busy this place was. Unbeknownst to me, my cousin was in town, so we decided to meet here for lunch. Their menu is very large and has many, many options. Came here on a Tuesday afternoon for lunch with my family. Service was great, servers were very attentive and kind. I split the Chicken Salad sandwich and the Downtown Hoagie with my uncle. Both great sandwiches but the Downtown Hoagie was one of the best Italian subs I've had. Super saucy and flavorful. We also got a side of potato salad and banana pudding. The food was pretty good. Service was horrible. Saw the waitresses in the back talking instead of paying attention to their customers.

I would give 5 stars but although she was nice our waitress failed to check on us, after being out of tea for some time we had to wave her over to get a refill. I had the 5 string banjo sandwich, my wife had the American club, both sandwiches were absolutely delicious, the atmosphere and setup of the deli is great. My wife and I recently discovered this restaurant for ourselves and upon sharing this with friends, we found that this is a local favorite and many of our friends. My in-laws took us to this place on an afternoon last week and we thoroughly enjoyed the sandwiches and salads there. The service there was friendly and they keep our drinks filled and made excellent suggestions as to what we might find interesting and good to eat from their menu. Such good sandwiches. I've gone here since I was a kid and we come back almost every week. Never have had a bad experience in my 14 years of going to the brick. All the workers and servers are very friendly and kind. Food is phenomenal!!!! Highly recommend the Chicago Fire, The American and Cold Club, The Ruben, I could go on. A friend and I came here yesterday for lunch. It is in downtown Decatur in a rustic brick building. Thankfully they have a parking lot on the side of the building, so no street parking required. We arrived about 11:20, it wasn't yet crowded so we easily found a table. However, by 11:45 when we left the place was hoppin! They have plenty of tables, a hefty bar, beautiful brick walls, a small stage for live music (in the evenings), and a bit music inspired decor. The noise level was a little high-not unbearable, but I believe even a pin drop would echo off those brick walls like a gong. My friend and I had downloaded the menu online so we already had an idea of what we wanted....and I'm not lying when I say we had the menu for a week prior to our planned visit and I couldn't decide what I wanted until the waitress came to take my order. There are so many yummy sounding soups and sandwiches that it really is a hard choice. The waitress came to our table quickly, took our drink orders, and returned quickly to take our order. She was very helpful by answering my questions to help me decided which sandwich to choose. My last minute decision was the Rob's Rye and Roast which is roast, spicy mustard, hot pepper cheese, jalapenos, mushrooms, onions, lettuce, and tomato sandwiched between two slices of rye bread. I also received chips and a pickle spear. I dug in and devoured my first half. It was HOT by the time I got to my second half but well worth the heart burn! The flavors melded together perfectly and even the after taste was bringing back wonderful memories the rest of the afternoon. The bread did get a little soggy and fell apart easily but if you don't like a little "jus" from your roast then maybe we can't be friends. My total for the sandwich combo with water came to $6.81, not bad, but don't forget to also include a tip. My friend couldn't decide between soup or salad so she chose the Blue Plate Special (located in the 'Salads and Such' section) which gives you the option to choose a half sandwich and a cup of soup. She chose the Dave's Steak sandwich and potato soup. The half sandwich came with a pickle spear and the cup of soup came with Mexican cornbread. She said she really enjoyed both the soup and sandwich. I am definitely excited to go back and try more things on the menu! I ordered Dave's Steak and HATED IT. I didnt like the marniate AT ALL. The steak was also shaved which I didnt expect. My wife had Chicken La La soup and a BLT. Not very impressed with the quality of the food or service this time. The sandwiches are usually very good but not today. The potato salad was even off today with potatoes that were hard and crunchy like not cooked long enough. Our waitress was behind the bar and made eye contact with us but waited 10 minutes talking to the other two employees that were behind the bar as well. When she finally came and handed us our menus she asked if we were ready to order. How am I suppose to be ready to order if I haven't even looked on the menu to see what is available. We asked for a few minutes and when she came back she wrote three separate tickets. I seriously doubt my 12 year old daughter is going to be buying her own lunch. This was a total failure from start to finish with our service and food. I will say that we got better service from the buss boy that was polite in asking if he could remove used napkins from our table and ensured we didn't have a cluttered table. Maybe the owner should make him a server and demote the other to bussing tables. It will be a good while before I go back there let alone take my family there again anytime soon. I ordered the American club and was expecting a big meaty hearty sandwich and instead got a sandwich that was all bread, dry, and barely any meat, and even worse it was cut into bite-size finger food pieces. The description on the menu did not mention it would be served like that. I don't know what they were thinking....Needless to say I was extremely disappointed, didn't enjoy my meal, and don't feel inclined to go back.
