What makes a good independent coffeeshop? 1. GOOD coffee. This is key. You'd think this would be a given, but its not always the case. A passion for little brown beans, aromas, steamed milk, and the art of fine java. BCCo, has it. 2. Comfortable seating. Wooden furniture is not wobbly or junky. Plenty of room to sit, study, chat, gaze out the window. Bonus points for a nice side patio perched in sun-drenched sidwalk on Morgan Street. 3. Light fare. Of course most places carry the appropriate pastries...but an offering of light sandwiches and snacks makes for a nice one-stop shop, especially when you're studying/working for several hours. The bites looked tasty...think bagel sandwiches, fresh veggies and the like. 4. Friendly folks behind the counter. Drink coffee, be happy. All were friendly and efficient. 5. Free Wifi. Enough said, the password is posted right on the door so you don't have to get all awkward asking the counter guy for it. Well done. 6. A pretty bathroom. This is an extra point of prowess, but when the artwork upon the walls of the loo is exceptional, I find that typically the rest of the place is too. Who knows what this means, but this bathroom is pretty damn swell. All in all, a win. The crowd is decidedly "first wave of Bridgeport artists and students," and there wasn't a glowering glare in sight. Comfortable, accessible, great coffee and a great 'hood vibe. Easy parking, too. Easy street parking (plenty of the free kind) and then there's the obvious: Bridgeport Coffee Co is located directly across from my favorite bar in Chicago, Maria's! Yes, I'm actually admiring their artistic bottle display from my workstation as I type. See you in 2.75 hours (er, minutes) for the beer tasting but for now, back to this brilliant little coffeeshop! Music. Fantastic jazz is being piped in, ideal for working and sprucing up the almost too quiet environment. I like. And, it's helping cover up the sounds of an awkward internet date. (He: What's your favorite color? She: That's a terrible question.) Drinks. They'll set you up with coffee/espresso concoctions, chai, yerba maté, loose leaf teas, hot chocolate, apple cider, ice tea... even blended drinks! For the lighter appetite, BCC offers a sweet selection of soups, sandwiches, wraps and the incredibly amazing-looking pizza bagel. Maja loved it! She's a round two kind of girl, and now she's savoring some minestrone. Verdict? "Really well-seasoned, not too salty, very simple flavors and it's a good-sized cup." You should know the deeee-licious chicken salad wrap contains onions if you're against them, and besides the cheese (provolone for me), it was lightly splashed with a super tasty Italian dressing. The second time was the charm for me and Bridgeport Coffee Company. Last winter my husband and I tried to visit and we encountered the perfect confluence of no parking, impatient cars and super cold wind. Rather than hoof it multiple blocks, we just drove on. Yesterday my heroine in city driving, better known as my daughter, brought me back. I am so glad! I really wanted to try my standard drink, small vanilla latte, but it was pretty warm out and in so I opted for it iced. Shivery caffeine delight in a charming spot. Made me wish I had known about this place when I spent some serious time in this neighborhood in a brief other lifetime. I'm so sorry I never visited you while I lived in the neighborhood... being east of 35th makes it hard to hear about a place like you because I was just never in your neck of the woods for any reason. But I know you now and I will never be able to go to another coffee house again without thinking about you and your awesomeness. Thank you for your wonderful outdoor seating that greets customers as they approach the lovely shop. Though I have never treated myself to an outdoor coffee or tea, I love that you have the available option because the weather in Chicago has been beautiful lately. Thank you for having amazingly inexpensive and delicious coffee all day long. I love that you gave me a discount for bringing in my own mug, too - I love recycling! Thank you for making your own fruit cups fresh everyday and charging almost nothing to purchase them. First of let me just say that every time I've been to this place it was impossible to get seating, people flock to it like it was the only freaking coffee shop in the world. People come in masses from Logan Square, as though coffee shops in Logan Square were obsolete, as though, this was the swankiest downtown club not some well, pretty much grimey Bridgeport Coffee spot. OK so since there is no place to sit I put in my order to go. The alt-hipster looking barista girl looks past me as she lays down her script hi how are you etc. When I respond, good how are you? She continues to blankly stare past me, making me look quite frankly like a fool. Oh, ok I guess this is the cue to put in my order, which will be give to someone else. So I put my order in, and patiently wait. There is something super wrong with their air/heating system as outside it is 32 degrees, but inside the coffee house it is 80. I sweat and wait, they open the door and turn on a fan, and now I am being blasted with hot dry air, even better. I see my pizza bagel coming out of the oven, I asked for giardiniera on the side, and I see the other male barista put it in a small container. I then see the same male barista give my order to some guy that walked in 2 minutes ago and had just put in his order, he hasn't formed one drop of sweat yet. He briskly passes me by holding my giardiniera on the side on top of my pizza bagels box. What are the odds that in the same 20 minutes, two people order the pizza bagel with giardiniera on the side? I don't believe it. As I approach the male barista and say hey I think you gave my pizza bagel with the giardiniera on the side to someone else he actually starts to look for the guy outside, as though I'm really going to take food that someone else walked out with. The female barista apologizes saying they will make another one. Because you know I have all day to wait around for pizza bagels in a shithole at the temperature of a bikram yoga studio. I don't respond right away and she has the nerve to say "Oh I see so we're not forgiven." No honey, you're not. The least you could have done was offered to refund half of my order, or offer me a free drink. But no, you just gave me more attitude. To top it all off, once I finally get my pizza bagel and open the box, half of the toppings have been thrown on the sides and under the bagel. Wow, just wow, Bridgeport Coffee Co. read more

I don't get it. I have to be missing something. I don't dish out poor reviews for stupid reasons, but this place is awful. 1. Service. The customer service is not always, but often terrible. I have walked in here, stood at the counter, and watched the barista avoid eye contact with me and clean the entire counter top for 5 minutes while I stood there waiting to order. I have ordered cappuccinos over an hour prior to closing only to be told that they "already cleaned the machine". Not once have I been thanked for a tip. You're treated far better at the DMV. 2. Crowds. I know this isn't the fault of the cafe, but good luck finding a place to sit down unless you show up bright and early on a weekday or just before closing. And yes, it is very hipstery. But find me a cafe in Chicago that isn't. 3. Quality. Their coffee is alright. Their lattes are beaten by flying colors a block away at *gulp* Dunken Donuts. They're inconsistent, and often times have been literally chucked into the garbage a block away after 2 sips. Inedible. The food is bland and moderate at best, especially in a neighborhood with bakeries on every other corner. 4. Value. Once you walk in, you can tell that none of the customers are native Bridgeporters. This is because a native Bridgeporter would not spend $5+ on a coffee. Cafes in general are expensive, but this one is on the high end. After reading so many amazing reviews, seeing the crowds, and living down the block, I gave them a few dozen chances to win me over. They didn't. I'd say the remaining value to this place is somewhere to meet a friend, but again, there's a 20% chance you'll actually find a place to sit. I really have to say that I don't see what the big deal is about this place. I mean---it's fine, it's pleasant. Nobody spat in my face or took a shit on my plate. But why is this the #1 rated place on yelp?! I just don't see it... I went the other day and order their BLT wrap with avocado. It tasted fine. It came with plain old Jay's chips out of the bag. After all, there were only about 4 sandwiches to choose from. But show me something exciting, something different, something creative for pete's sake! Maybe it's just because there are no other decent sandwiches places in 3-mile radius. Or maybe it's just because I live near the Bongo Room, Milk & Honey, Birchwood Kitchen and so many other amazing places that have spoiled me. Or maybe Bridgeport Coffee just exemplifies the difference between the North and South Side. Maybe Bridgeport coffee is the embodiment of that blue-collar, damon runyon, old chicago persnality that asks for their coffee black, prefers white bread and thinks alioli is a part of a women's body. Maybe this is like a red state/blue state thing on a more localized level. Because I just can't think of any other explanation why everyone is popping wood about this place. So anyway, if you are in the area I wouldn't tell you not to go. It's very inexpensive and food is fine. But if you are wondering what all the hype is about and thinking about making the trip from your area, save yourself gas money. It ain't worth it. read more

Okay, it's time I jump on the bandwagon and put in my vote that the Bridgeport Coffee Company is a hidden gem and yes, makes some of the best donuts I've ever had. The only problem is, I'm not a coffee drinker. Can't stand the stuff, and more than a few times the smell of roasting coffee discouraged me for entering some mornings, way back when I used to work for Benton House and would contemplate stopping in for a breakfast bagel (and donut) on the way to work or contemplate stopping in for an afternoon bagel (and donut) on the way home from work. Of course, on mornings when the coffee smell wasn't as strong, the allure of the donut smell could break through and bid me to come in and partake. Nowadays, my path doesn't take me that way. I rely on gifted donuts from my girlfriend who will take the time to travel that distance to her new favorite little coffee-shop. Of course, I can never forget the awesome food, the great shakes, and the very kind staff who would even let me and a group of like-minded nerds play a little Dungeons & Dragons at one of their tables an afternoon or two during the week. So yea, kudos to you, Bridgeport Coffee Company. Add my 5-star review to the pile, and make sure you've got some donuts the next time my gal comes by, so she can make sure to bring me back a few for when I'm done with a long day of work. read more

Bridgeport Coffee Company is sort of the quintessential coffee shop. It's on the corner in an old brick building, with big windows and a big old air conditioner hung above the front door. When you walk in, there is an air of quirky eclecticism, with charming little touches all over the place. There is a case of baked goods (90% of which look homemade) and big chalkboards describing the types of food and drink offered. Everything is extremely laid back, comfortable, and has a lazy "take your time - sip your coffee" feel about it. I had a basic coffee of the day and it was a true delight - bold, rich, chocolaty, that really hit the spot on such a chilly day. I didnt have anything to eat, but the pizza bagels they were making for another table smelled and looked great. I am not usually pained by a place being far away and inconvenient to get to, but I am sad I have to reserve my trips to BCC for my rare sojourns to the South Side. Next time I am in the area though, I will definitely be back! read more

Once we got it straight with the help that the bagel and cream cheese was "to go," all was good. The confusion was that, since we were waiting for a cab, I said "to go" but would eat it there. That nuance confused the counter dude but a smart lady worker interjected: "he might need to leave before he's done eating, so put it in a bag for him." Yep, job placement's not random. Service, food, and drinks are great. They even have tasty vegan options available! There's a great little outdoor seating during the warmer months and the space is huge. If you want the hustle and bustle of a coffeeshop you can sit in the front room. But there's also a quieter seating area in the back room if you want a more studying friendly environment. I have to mark down one star because of the wifi. It's great to have the quieter room in the back but the wifi reception is so poor that you really can't accomplish much if you need the internet. Stopped here for a coffee & treat after visiting the Bridgeport Art Center. Neat place, has a cool coffee house vibe. (It is an old corner pharmacy) Had the "daily blend" which was clearly fresh ground. My kids loved the HUGE doughnuts (should be for two:) My wife had a Carmel latte--too sweet for me but she loved it! We will be back when in the area for sure!! read more

So I'm staying in Bridgeport for the next couple of months, and I've been exploring the neighborhood--so far, Bridgeport Coffee Company is my finest discovery. It's located just blocks away from Halsted and 31st, on 31st and Morgan. It's small inside, but decorated in that kitschy coffee shop manner that's both homey and inviting. There's 10 or so tables inside to study, work, or have meetings--also, free wi-fi! I'm not a big coffee drinker, but I really love their iced lattes. The coffee is a medium roast; smooth and not too bitter. They also offer tea in your own personal teapot, milkshakes and smoothies. I haven't tried the sandwiches yet, but I have tried the doughnuts, and Tina B. was spot on in her review--this is an awesome doughnut. Fresh, light, and with a hint of grease, this is one of my favorite doughnuts in Chicago. Bridgeport Coffee is a fun little place in a pretty quiet neighborhood. I wish they were open a little later (they close at 8 on weekdays), but otherwise, this place is awesome. read more

Not sure why I keep trying to give this place a chance to redeem itself. Service is horrible, staff is on their own timeframe, If the service is prompt, the drink is wrong. Today I stopped in to get something quick & easy - a medium coffee. Saw there was no line ...thought PERFECT! Instead of acknowledging me, young girl continued to nonchalantly make a sandwich or something...all she could've said Was HI! I'll be with you un a sec, know what yoy're having? Which at that point she could pump the coffee sitting by the register, hand me it in a minute, cash me out and go back to making love to her sandwich. Instead, I left pissed off in a hurry to get to work. I have been biting my tongue, saying that I'm not going to write a Yelp review...but enough is enough. Sucks, because I moved to Bridgeport in July thinking this cute coffee shop was going to be my staple coffee shop. I will go out of my way and trek to Jackalope on Halsted if time permits, or no coffee at all. Also, after being a bartender for 12 years and Service Industry since 15, I know what people should expect and what good service looks like. Sad. This is my go-to coffee shop. I'm there a few times a week for morning coffee or lunch. I used to be there everyday, but unfortunately the quality seems to be slipping. The atmosphere/decor is great and I love the outdoor seating. The beans are good quality and are usually what I use at home. On my days off, BCC, Pleasant House, Maria's, Zaytune make a full day of coffee, good food, and beer. Unfortunately there seems to have been significant staff turnover and the new staff, though friendly, are not up to par when it comes to making drinks. The espresso is coming out more bitter and I avoid ordering more than just coffee unless one of the vets is at the espresso helm. As others have mentioned, the internet is atrocious. I no longer bring my computer to do work and keep my phone on 4G. The place is overly warm post-winter/pre-air conditioning and can get pretty loud. Overall, a really good coffee shop that was (and could again be) great. read more

We first had Bridgeport coffee at Alliance Bakery, so we bought a bag of whole beans at Whole Foods thereafter. The coffee is among the best; unfortunately, our Whole Foods hasn't carried it since. After a photowalk in Brighton Park, we headed northeast to the establishment at W. 31st. and S. Morgan. The coffee was still superlative (we bought a bag to take home). Because it was a Sunday afternoon, there was room for the three of us except on stools by the window, which was fine. Pastries were mostly gone, but what we had (brownie and flourless chocolate cake) was tasty. Service was efficient and patient with our ordering delays. Highly recommended! read more

One of the best coffee shops in the city. Bridgeport Coffee Company knows how to brew a mean cuppa coffee. And when I say mean, I mean freakin' delicious. Their roastery is just down the street! Holla. For the most part I'm a black coffee kinda gal, and that's what I got at Bridgeport, although they have plenty of other coffee/espresso/tea drinks to enjoy. I was also in the mood for something sweet, so I asked what kind of muffins they had (they had some in the display case but they weren't labeled). A nice guy in line recommended the bran muffin so I went with that one. This is going to make me sound like I'm 80 but I really love bran. Anywho, both the coffee and the muffin were excellent - the coffee was full and strong without being bitter, and the muffin was just sweet enough and not too bran-ny. The shop is small and cozy, with comfy wood furniture. The employees and patrons give BCC a nice hometown, friendly atmosphere. I enjoyed listening to the random banter that floated throughout the room while I waited for my coffee. I would happily trade in my trips to the 'bucks for this place, if only it were closer. read more

So I'm kinda reviewing my cross country trip a little backwards, but I couldn't forget Chicago and this awesome coffee shop!! When my friend brought my bf and I over to this very cute coffee shop near her house, I fell in love. The staff is friendly and helpful. The decor is so comfortable and relaxing. I loved that they provided a doggy water dish outside for the pups, as well as outdoor seating. Though the inside decor was just as cozy, mellow and welcoming. I felt very at home here. I was ready to throw down my suitcase and forget about the rest of the drive to L.A. That's how much I loved the feel of this place (and well just overall Chicago as well. Love you guys!). The quality of coffee is great, and I loved their cheddar jalapeno bagel with cream cheese. If I lived here, I would imagine I'd sit here with my laptop and enjoy a cozy morning, coffee in hand, and bagel not far from my reach. Great coffee, great food, great service. read more

Delicious Coffee, delicious sandwiches, delicious shakes, possibly delicious baristas, though I will say that they are definitely nice. I seem to find myself at this bridgeport gem any time I run out of beans here at the old apartment, and I would definitely say that it is worth a trip if you are as far west as western, as far north as adams, as far east as the lake, and as far south as.. well, not sure about the far-south side. I haven't tried the coffee samplings on that side of town. The mayor's blend is my favorite. Also, their 'bean burger' is good, and especially good if you get it with a little bit of turkey on it. Service is great, polite & welcoming. Even a weirdo like me, with my fucked up hair, and "i haven't talked to anyone in 5 days" mannerisms will be welcomed like the pope at a 1970s canaryville church. Go to this place! I need to update my post. This has been my favorite place for years. The coffee and food is still pretty good. I used to think the chocolate chip cookies were the best in the world (freshly baked) but as of late, they have been too oily and over cooked/slightly burnt. What's been really irritating me the last year or two has been the sheer amount of hipsters crawling around the place. Ever since the neighborhood has been changing over, BCH isn't the nice, quiet place you can go to study anymore. Its gotten pretty loud and crowded. I don't want to be overly critical because I'm happy that the cafe has increased business, but now it's more of a place to stop for a cup of coffee, rather than a place I can go and study or grade papers. read more

On one recent visit I eyed the carrot muffin and was told they were low fat. I made a face to show my disappointment and was toldby the young man behind the counter, "don't let that fool you it's our best muffin." I'd have never known it was low fat if he hadn't told me. This place is practically perfect! Locally roasted drinks? Unique flavors of tea that I can't just pick up from the grocery store (I don't drink coffee)? Iced or hot, really? And they have soy milk? And the decor includes pictures of far-off lands (from where I assume they get their fair trade coffee beans)? A friendly staff? Outdoor seating? Whoa, did I just step into a cafe on the northside? Am I really in Bridgeport? Yes indeed. All I had was an iced jasmine-something-or-other tea, and it was like drinking a flower! I'll bet my breath smells like perfume now. I sipped my tea whilst reading a book, and noticed that the flowers on the table are real! Not silk. Maybe that's not a big deal to some readers, but it's something you don't always see in this part of town. I don't drink much else besides tea at cafes, hence why I'm reviewing after one visit. After all, would my review really change after drinking all the dozen types of tea they have available? So why not 5 stars? Well, I haven't tried the food yet, but so far, it doesn't look all that promising. Vegans can get a veggie sandwich with no cheese or mayo, but you're left with standard stuff (like you might get at Subway): lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, oil and vinegar. But if the veggies are organic, locally grown, and not iceberg lettuce, that's a different story. Find a local vegan baker and sell some vegan desserts, and I'll give you a 5 ;-). read more

You know, some lady described her meal at this other restaurant as "miraculous" to the waiter. What an idiot. I had to bring this up to my friend because it was the silliest thing to say that a meal was considered a miracle even thought this lady was eating in Glen Ellyn--she must have some money. Meals are miracles only for the starving kids in China I heard so much about at my dinner table as a child. I understand hyperbole, but sometimes people go a little too far. Really, I appreciate that you've taken to grammar so well. You are really smart. Okay, sorry for wasting your time. The real review begins here. I would not say the Bridgeport Coffee Company is a miracle. It was not spontaneously assembled by some cosmic alignment in the universe. The food is actually made with precision and deliberate creativity. I can easily say I was served the best, most flavorful sandwich of my time here at this cafe. The only vegetarian sandwich on the menu was loaded with vegetables and slathered in a rich spread of avocado, hummus, and their own dressing. Oh right, and I really believed that the iced tea I was served was chocolate milk. It turned out it was a lighter brown than most teas and still just as good. Out and about riding my bike I pass by and realized how long it had been since I stopped in. The coffee was as perfect as ever and I sat down and munched on the most fantastic pizza bagel I ever had. Perfectly toasted just the right amount of cheese, sauce, and peperoni. Hot peppers? Yes please. Yum! You might say i have a problem with coffee. It's not that i love it as much as i need it to survive. I'm not a snob when it comes to coffee most of the cups i have drank over the years have been made in my kitchen from whatever ground beans were on sale that week at the store. When i found Bridgeport Coffee Company I was drinking dunkin and having a fine relationship with my cup of joe, but then i walked in the doors at 31st and morgan and was greeted by the best barista's i have ever seen. These are not what i have come to expect over the years of going into artsy,hip, coffee shops. These folks are down to earth people. The ladys are always spot on with witty small talk, and the two guys who work there talk hockey with me. I can not give you a fair review of there drinks since i have only had there house coffee (which tastes better then most any other coffee i have had) and the iced coffee (this shit looks like a cup of Guinness and has you awake all day) but i can give a 5 star, 2 thumbs up, kick-ass review to there customer service. thanks for making my work days better. read more

This is a small, neighborhood, no frills kind of place but that's cool. If they continue to serve great coffee, great sandwiches and pastries plus provide speedy and polite service , they'll be just fine. On top of all that, they have free wi-fi! Stopped in mid-afternoon for a cup of tea with a friend visiting from abroad, and it was packed with students nursing their drinks, heads buried in their computers. Throwing caution to the wind, we opted to stay, and placed our orders with the friendly barista at the cash register. I ordered the green mandarin tea, which was pretty terrific, and after being given instructions on how long to let it steep before beginning to drink it, a table opened up and we sat down. As mentioned already, the tea was quite good, and the environment was inviting as well. In addition to drinks, they serve sandwiches, and based on appearance alone, I'd bet they are good. I would have no trouble whiling away the time here, reading a book or doing some work, and others clearly agree with me given the number of empty tables (0) inside. They have patio seating available, so I'm sure I'll be hitting that up come Spring, but for now, I'll sit inside, nursing my tea waiting impatiently for the snowflakes that are due to fall any day now. read more

I love the cozy atmosphere at Bridgeport Coffee. The walls are decorated with Chicago Bridgeport history and it is a perfect place to sit and do work - free wifi, not too crowded or noisy, but never empty. The coffee is wonderfully made, and the service is great. Also their sandwiches are really good, but I wish they had a better selection of pastries. Bottom line: Bridgeport Coffee Company is always a good choice. read more
