We are very pleased with the new back patio installed by Bright Construction Group that replaced an old wooden one. Their estimate was detailed and pricing very reasonable. Stephen was responsive and extremely helpful throughout the process. We chose porcelain pavers for our project and many of the other companies we received estimates from were either not familiar with the stone or tried convincing us not to go that route. Stephen was familiar with the pavers and thought it was a great idea. In addition to planning, he also gave great advice for accent colors for the stone retaining wall and concrete countertop area we also had installed. The before and after photos say it all. I heard good things about Bright Construction, so I made an appointment for them to give me an estimate for a patio installation. The guy came out, seemed really nice, said he'd give me an estimate in 2-3 days. Great. Two weeks went by, no estimate. I sent the company an email asking if there was an update, and they never answered my email. Two more weeks went by. I called them to ask what the status of my estimate was/why no one answered my email. The person on the phone apologized and said someone would contact me by close of business to give me the estimate. Nobody called. If they didn't want to do my project, I wish they would just tell me. I guess I'll just have to take a hint and move on. read more

Back in 2013, Stephen worked with me to come up with just the patio design we wanted, and at a reasonable price. Nine years later, we are finding that we finally need to redo some spots in the polymer sand joints (as weeds have started to infiltrate). We are looking to touch up the joints with new sand, but couldn't find the proper dark-colored sand anywhere! I called Stephen again just recently to ask where I could get a replacement sand, and not only offered to give me a bucket of leftover sand he had free of charge, but he also dropped it off at our house. Great working with Stephen, and great customer service! read more

They do crap work. And don't stand behind it. Take a look at the photos for proof. We even took them to court and lost because our lawyer was terrible. There are cracks in foundations. Walls that are not supposed to be there. Our walkway isn't flat - so it gathers water when it rains which turns into a huge sheet of ice when it's cold. Don't recommend them at all. read more

My wife and I have used Bright Construction 4 jobs over the last few year on our old house.They installed a driveway, a deck with paver, a retaining wall and capped or stone wall in front of our house. In each instance, they patiently and competently helped design the project, performed the work with care and skill and were always in communication with us through the process and stayed with the project until it was completely finished. It all looks great! Their prices were reasonable for the amount of work done. I wouldn't say inexpensive, but fair. I think these are the top folks to turn to on construction project. Art read more

They did an AMAZING patio (front and back) for the previous owners of our home. Then, last year, we needed a small repair -- adjusting some of the rebar supports. Again, great!! Prompt, courteous, about $300 - reasonable. So today I noticed another minor repair is needed, and I email. Response (after 2 emails and phone call) is that they only do $950 jobs. Completely understand economy of scale. Doesn't make sense for Bright to do an initial install for a small amount or to repair other people's work, also for a small amount. However, being unwilling to provide upkeep or support to the company's own work is unacceptable. Most of these stones are "floating" which means they need some adjustment from time to time. I'm certainly willing to pay for maintenance, but not be forced to "make up" work. read more

Our original asphalt driveway needed resuscitation - it wasn't terminal yet, but we're not so great at the whole home maintenance thing (nor were the previous owners of the house) so I'm pretty sure the driveway had never been black topped even once. I used Angie's List to select a reasonable slate of potential service providers: of the five contacted, Bright was certainly not the cheapest but Steve was the most pleasant, responsive, and knowledgeable of all of them. In fact he made SO much sense we ended up agreeing to rip the asphalt out and replace it with a concrete one. Despite a weather delay, the company was very responsive and attentive. The job, which also included re-placement of our front flagstones and installation of paver stones around done of our landscaping, was done extremely well. I know this company has done bad reviews - all I can say is they were very professional on our job, and every time I had a question I was always able to get to someone who could and did answer my questions. If I had to, I'd use them again. (hopefully I won't have to though, since the concrete is supposed to last for 30 years!) read more

I called to ask for a quote. The lady who answered the phone stated that the gentleman who makes appointments had stepped away for a minute and would call me back within 5 minutes. After over an hour passed, a man calls and says someone named Rui will be out on Thursday at 2 PM to provide the quote. Thursday at 2 comes and goes, and no Rui. Not even a phone call or any sort of contact whatsoever. I took off of work early so that I could meet with Rui. As you can imagine, happy I was not. It could've been an honest mistake, but I refuse to give my money to businesses who care so little about their customers. This isn't the way to make a good first impression, to say the least. read more

I called them based on a high rating in Arlington County Best Pick Reports. I scheduled a date to have someone come out to give me an estimate for some work on my front steps and patio. Stephen showed up promptly at 9am on the assigned date and seemed professional enough. I was told I'd have a quote by Monday. Monday came and went so I emailed him on Wednesday to ask for the quote. Another week went by and no response so I called the main Bright Construction number and explained the situation. The person on the phone was not very professional but said they'd contact Stephen and have him get back to me. 2 days later and I still don't even have an estimate. I know that this is a small job but I would expect someone to at least get back to me, especially when I mentioned that I may have a bigger job in the future with my back patio. This is my only experience with this company but you only get one chance to make a first impression. The lack of professionalism makes me question how this company could get a recommendation from anyone, much less an Arlington County 'best picks' book. I've obviously decided to take my business elsewhere since I can't see how I could trust someone to do work on my house when they can't even send an email or make a phone call. read more

Our year old driveway was conveyed as "finished" in an absurdly poor condition. Mr. Domingues' few attempts at repair cured nothing and left it in worse shape with mismatched, inferior materials and significant cement overspray on other areas of our home. My 1950s home's garage had cracks in garage floor for a number of years. In the past few years they had worsened due to sinking of the concrete., at one point at least 7 inches--and getting worse. Bright sent a team out this week. They were supervised by Luis, and were a very professional 3 man team. In a 10 hour period they were able to demolish the old floor, remove all the debris, have new concrete poured, leveled, and totally smoothed out. By the next morning the floor looked brand new---which it was. These guys are fast, efficient, very professional. After removing debris, pouring concrete, leveling and smoothing concrete their clean up was great--they left our driveway clean and freshly washed. I can't say enough about Bright. We are pleased to report that Bright Construction Group did a beautiful concrete curbing construction job at our Oakton townhouse community, and all at a very reasonable price. The construction project involved delicate and precise excavation of an existing landscape central parking island and the building of an expanded parking area with curved concrete curbing and gutter pans, all matching the adjacent street design. Bright Construction was fantastic! I hired them to re-do a patio, walkway and a concrete pad in the back of my house after a sewer pipe repair and poor/incomplete restoration by a WASA contractor. They provided the most detailed description and estimate for the work, and were easy to communicate with via email and phone to finalize details. Luis, the foreman, and his crew were hardworking, tidy and very kind--they even finished the job a day early. It took a number of weeks to get on their schedule, but it was totally worth the wait. We hired them to install a drainage system in our back and it has handled everything thrown at it with no issues including the 4 inches of rain in one hour that we had last year. Before the drainage system a small lake would form after every downpour. Highly recommend. read more

I'm giving Bright Masonry a 3 star "OK" rating because we don't have a point of comparison to say we've experienced better. I was pleased with the prompt visit for an estimate and the responsiveness when my husband called asking for someone to come onsite to check work that needed to be redone. We're also pleased with the suggestions regarding design. Additional stars are not awarded because some wet concrete was not cleaned from surfaces such as the iron hand railing. As a result, that messy concrete is now a permanent fixture. (See UPDATE below.) How many times have you heard a contractor say "We're not happy until you're happy?" Well, at Bright, I believe they truly mean it. Mr. Domingues, our contact at Bright, called and talked to my husband about the work and when asked about a few things, Mr. Domingues assured my husband that they would go the extra mile to make sure the work is done to our satisfaction. We don't care about waiting until winter is over because we know at Bright Masonry they are true to their word. We'll see. Update: November 2010 - Well, winter came and went, spring came and went, summer came and went, and it's been a year since the work was done and we've given up. We would definitely not recommend this company for retaining wall work. They had to dig the wall out twice and fix their work because copious amounts of water leaked from the wall when it rained. Obviously, this will eventually result in a crumbling wall. I am too frustrated to deal with them, but, my husband has tried to have the deficiencies brought to an acceptable standard. For example, there was a hole in the sidewalk cement, which we were told is a common occurence. That's fine, but the hole in the light colored sidewalk was filled with dark cement. Also, we had rain water leaking into the family room and soaked the carpet because of a hole. Ultimately, Bright Masonry told us we were too picky because it is an "old" house. You may want to find someone who takes more pride in their work. read more

CAUTION! I hired this company to replace my patio. The work was unsatisfactory and I couldn't communicate with the crew as they spoke no English. To save a few steps the workers backed a 70 ton concrete truck onto my driveway and crushed the asphalt requiring expensive repair. To finish, they backed a truck into the light pillar next to the driveway, breaking it in half and leaving the scene. I refused to pay the balance until the damage was repaired so Dominguez sued me, lying all the while. read more

The concrete driveway we had put in 20 years ago was spalling and looked terrible. We arranged for three estimates. Two of those appealed to us because each did a thorough and detailed estimate with discussion of what options there might be (surface treatment, dates of installation, etc.) The third estimate was $3000 higher than the other two, half of our eventual cost! Juan Espinoza prepared the estimate for Bright Construction and provided very thorough explanations of the work to be done. Although their price was $200 more than the closest competitor, Bright won out because they provided a very detailed proposal and had done excellent work for our neighbors. We found it easy to communicate and work with the office personnel. Tony was the foreman for our job. He was expert, extremely experienced at what he was doing and very patient with the many questions and concerns we had while the work was being done. He and his crew (all of whom work for Bright Construction) work together all the time, therefore each of the crew know what to do and how to do it. My spouse could not be there, and called various times to ask about exactly what was happening and to check that the drainage had been carefully engineered. Tony accepted those questions with grace and gave full and reassuring explanations about the work. We never needed to worry. Tony (and his crew) knew exactly what they were doing. The work was checked and rechecked to make sure that everything was correct at each step of the project before moving on to the next stage of the work. It is raining this morning and the water is draining exactly as we had hoped. A note: The night before the work was to be done, long after business hours, we suddenly realized that the unfortunate angle in our driveway could be ameliorated by simply adding a curve. Since everything was so carefully spelled out in the contract and because they had probably had to put in an order for the concrete the previous day, we thought it was unlikely that we could change the plan. Tony assured us that he could certainly make the change--and what a good change it is. We now have a smooth beautiful curve that will be much more functional than the old driveway. Also: When the concrete forms could be removed, a crew member was dispatched to replace the dirt/grass that had been cut out in order place them. He then seeded the disturbed areas and spread straw over them for protection. That was in their contract, but still, pretty nice! read more

Bright Masonry did a great job tearing out our old driveway and pouring a new wider concrete driveway. Their estimate was the lowest we got. The quality of the work was wonderful. The driveway looks great. My only complaint is that I asked them (and paid extra) to save some extra of our grass sod that they dug up for me to use elsewhere in our yard. I think they got their measurements a little off and excavated too much in some areas. They ran out of back fill dirt, used up all of the sod around the driveway, and didn't have any left over like I asked. That said, the final product looks very nice and they used the dug-up sod around the driveway so there aren't any "new grass" spots that look different from the rest of our yard. read more

Very poor customer service. I had a sump pump installed in my basement and some exterior work to grade excess rain away from the house. I was dissatisfied with the initial workmanship. I was left with trash in my basement and an uneven basement floor that the rear door didn't clear properly. I was left with a pipe across part of the yard about 6 inches above the ground-- a tripping hazard. They came back and cleaned up a bit but were full of excuses. 1.5 years later, I had rats tunneling in through the side of the system into the house and disabling the pump with dirt and gravel. It took 2 weeks for Bright to come out. They were so busy denying any blame / warranty when all I wanted was a bid to get the system closed again and functional. (Rat professionals said all the connections from the outside drain to the sump pit should have been covered with rat-proof copper mesh.) Long story short, after an exorbitant bid and a condescending lesson on how resilient rats are (thanks, duh!) I hired someone else to complete the work at a $1000 less than Bright quote. Even if their prices were more reasonable, their work and their customer service stinks. read more

This is skilled masonry at its finest. I have used this company the past 6 years only because the workers are artisans who love there jobs and the final product of their work excels over your expectations. What stands out is that the owner shares oversight with the foreman and together they work the projects with the crew. On this current job the owner, Rui Domingues, had the foresight to renew my underground 69 yr old sewer line before paving over it. This is a full service outfit that concerns itself with the end product meeting the needs of the customer and then some. Love their work. They used regular and permeable pavers to extend my driveway hundreds of square feet behind my house and also created drains and sodded around my new garage. read more

Since I rely upon on-line reviews to evaluate service providers, I feel it necessary to write a detailed review of my recent work by Bright Masonry. My house in Arlington needed extensive work to a long flight of flagstone steps and a a retaining wall that had crumbled. I had a number of contractors look at both and the proposals varied wildly from a few thousand dollars to nearly 10 times that amount. I even went so far as to put a deposit down with one of the low cost contractors, only to have them disappear - lesson learned. When I was finally contacted by the County about the wall, I knew I had to get serious, and asked friends for recommendations. One suggested Bright Masonry. I contacted the office, and they sent out a knowledgable sales guy who quickly put a detailed bid together. While it was not the lowest price quoted (I'd already been burned by one of them), it was amongst the most reasonable I got. I thought the work would take a week or more, with me having to take off a lot of time from work to keep an eye on things, but they showed up with a large crew, and knocked the job out in only two days including a Saturday. The crew were professional, efficient, courteous and hard-working - I know, I did that sort of work while in college. They did a great job, solid work, and it looked better than I had imagined - they matched stone and mortar of a nearly 100 year old wall! They even did a great job with clean-up - which is one way to tell if a job is truly done right. Every phase of the job was handled well, and I can not recommend them highly enough! If you want to see their work, drive up Rock spring Road next to the Washington Golf & Country Club and look right halfway up the hill - that's their fine work on my wall.
