I highly recommend DES! I arranged a consultation after a home inspection report indicated that there was moisture in our basement walls. I was worried that costly mitigation efforts would be required. And it kept our yard dry, which we think also mitigated mosquitos and other insects. We were quite happy. We just had Drainage & Erosion Solutons (DES) solve several drainage issues we were having in our backyard, and we couldn't possibly be happier. They were prompt, professional, and did an incredible job of cleaning up afterward so that you can barely tell they did anything. Robert sent three crews to handle our job to ensure it got done ahead of bad weather coming and completed it in ONE day instead of the two they originally scheduled. As I said, we couldn't possibly be happier. I want to add one more thing here. I notice that there are a lot of poor reviews here on Yelp! but I believe you need to take most of them with a grain of salt. Some people are WAY too quick to leave a really bad review for the slightest little thing without even giving the company a chance to make it right. Things started off well enough. They were a bit pricy, but I assumed high quality work and responsiveness would go along with it. I was disappointed. The initial installation went well enough, but they left the areas they dug up a complete mess. After pointing this out to management, they sent a crew back later to lay new grass and most of it lived. The main issue and reason this review is so late is the drainage pipe into the street. They only cut enough out of the curb to lay the pipe and attempted to patch it or something, instead of laying new concrete correctly. Over a year later and it's still a mess. I've contacted them several times about it and I've been given lots of promises and apologies, but as you can see it's still an issue. I imagine the City may have something to say about this as well, but I won't go there. read more

We worked with David and his crew on two different occasions and both times were very positive experiences. We live in an old house and part of the basement is unfinished with cinderblock walls. Water was beginning to seep through the cinderblock and onto the floors from the outside soil. We had four companies come out to quote the work and DES/David was the clear winner. David came out multiple times to review with me what all it would entail to fix the issue. We decided to start small and have DES extend all downspouts and hoped that would fix the problem. However, there was a period of very heavy rain and the issue was not resolved. David and his team scheduled us promptly to fully waterproof the basement (this involves essentially digging a trench around the house down to the foundation). It was a very large job, but they completed the work within 3 days and you would never know they had dug up so much of the yard. David is easy to communicate with (responds quickly, honest and fair). The crew showed up every day on time, were efficient, cleaned up the yard nicely and were very patient with my many questions and requests on how the garden bed should be redesigned. I should also mention that the office staff is very helpful as well - kind, thorough and quick to respond. We really did have the best experience with DES and I would certainly use them again! It was last year when I contacted them for an estimate. They did come out to survey the situation and I received an estimate for the solution. It was not an estimate for my house. It was very obvious since there is no patio on the side of my property next to my neighbors fence. The estimate included removing and then replacing patio stones to install piping in addition to other references that did not pertain to my solution. I left a message and never received a call back. They wasted my time, I did not pursue any further communication. Two weeks later I saw the company working in a neighborhood near mine on what appeared to be a much larger job. Like many people in our area we've had some basement water issues due to the intensity of rainfall in the past year. We had water coming in from the seam between the basement walls and foundation in the front and back of our home. I spoke with people from 3 different companies, and each presented unique solutions. One used high pressure sales tactics and tried to get us to install a very expensive and very invasive system (that would require digging a moat around the inside perimeter of the home for a proprietary french drain-type thing) that didn't really address the problem. The second came out, told us they couldn't assess the problem unless we removed the wall paneling, offered no solutions, and charged us for coming out. And then there was D&E. They came out and immediately knew the cause of the problem and offered several solutions to fix not only the symptoms, but the root cause. And the quotes were free. Scheduling was easy, and so was working with David and the team when they showed up to do the work. Everything was very clear, and even when they hit a unexpected dewatering snag with the site, they provided a good work-around in real-time. Overall D&E provided excellent service, always kept us in the loop, and really exceeded our expectations in every way. And we haven't had any issues since the work was done. read more

Recently purchased a new (to us) home and noticed some water coming in the basement during the first heavy rain. Called D&ES the same day and got an appointment to have someone come out and do an assessment. Jesse came out a few days later and was excellent at assessing what was needed quickly and efficiently. I really appreciated his patience and willingness to walk me through what was going on and what needed to happen. He clearly knows his stuff, but also knows how to explain it for folks like me with no background in foundations. Based on Jesse's assessment, we booked D&ES to do downspout extensions around the whole house and to replace the DIY sump pump setup the prior owner had set up in an egress well. Communication and pricing was clear and fair. They were able to do the work about a week earlier than originally scheduled. Took two days total and they did an amazing job. Hector was the crew captain for those two days and I can't say enough about how pleased I am with the quality of the work he and his crew did. I first called to arrange for them to come take a look at our water issues on October 3- their first availability was November 30, but its been a wet year and lots of folks have water issues, so I get it. On November 30 at the appointed time no one shows, so I call them to see what is going on. It turns out they've lost the appointment but, to their credit, they arrange to have someone come out at the end of the day. That individual takes a look around, discusses some options that sound reasonable and promises to have us a quote by the end of the weekend. Unfortunately, there is no word from him for over a week, no response to emails, no response to email messages. When I finally get him on the phone a week and a half later he indicates that he was out of town for family reasons, but promises to have me an estimate the next day. Fast forward two more weeks, three more voicemails, four more phone conversations promising an estimate within 24 hours, and multiple attempts to talk to a supervisor later- still no estimate, still the same promise that the estimate will be done "tomorrow." This is almost three months after initially reaching out to them. I can't speak to their actual work, but this is absurd. I know they're busy, but most would be out of business operating at this level of professionalism. Save yourself three months, and work with someone else. read more

It's pretty unsettling to have the company send Mike out to give an estimate, walk around my home inside and out taking measurements along the way just to never hear back from him. Mike came out on November 19 and November 20 I sent him a text message wanting to be sure he had my email address. He never responded to my text. Okay, I get it, he/the company is busy but common courtesy isn't common I guess. I called twice after Thanksgiving, once leaving a voicemail and the second call the receptionist said she would let him know that I need the estimate. I asked her if there was someone above Mike that I could speak with because she was basically going to do what I've been doing-telling him to please email an estimate. She put me on hold for a bit and said she just spoke with Mike and he said he would send the estimate by COB that day (December 3). As of today, December 9 still no estimate. Besides the fact that I was excited to get this work done and they let me down, I wouldn't want for anyone else to allow this company to send someone out to walk through your home, inside and out, checking things out just to never hear back from them again. Sophia T: still waiting to hear from you... Update, I had the guy's name wrong-it was Rob: thank goodness for Yelp. After Sophia T's post I called, and again, left a message for someone to call me. Got a call directly back from the office manager who said she had no record of me calling and that Rob sent my estimate to the wrong email address. That's possible but it reinforces the bad taste left in my mouth. 2 days after he was at my home I texted Rob my email address and my physical address (in case he forgot who I was) and of course the text was from my cell. He could have replied to my text. He could have called my cell. He could have driven by and left a note on my door. As stated above I called their office twice and spoke to their receptionist. I never heard from this company until I wrote a review on Yelp. My original review stands. Over the past 7 years we have had several small scale projects handled by Drainage & Erosion Solutions and they have always done fantastic work. This week we had to have what turned out to be 3 days of work done to prevent moisture intrusion into our crawl space and correct some poor surface drainage issues. The foreman and crew from D&ES were each exceptional. They were on time each day, worked diligently throughout the day, kept the work areas clean and organized and were a pleasure to work with. Initially great service, great interaction, work was of high quality. The initial technician pointed out where my general contractor did not tie in the addition of my home appropriately at the foundation. There was no water proofing barrier materials. He promised a written report, and photos. I requested this several times, including leaving several emails and voicemails to the owner of the company. Not one response. I hired DES to waterproof a retaining wall. The work, costing over $19,000, was completed at the beginning of April 2021. Jesse, the project supervisor, insisted that I pay him the balance due moments after the work was completed. When I pointed out that DES owed for some damages, he agreed, told me I could not deduct it from what I owed and assured me that he would take care of it. It has taken a while but finally after two months, seven emails, six phone calls and five texts, I realize he never had any intention of paying for the damage. He lied to me repeatedly. read more

When we purchased our house, one of the things the inspector noted was to improve the grading around the house for improved drainage. We had DES come out to give us a quote on this, they were late but were courteous enough on the phone about it. Their pointman/sales guy walked around our house and explained how their team would excavate our entire house(!) and install a waterproof membrane and a (complex) system of sump pumps to ensure water didn't get into the finished basement, for a quoted price of $35,000. We were pretty shocked that this was the proposed solution to our issues considering (despite recent heavy rains) we have never seen any water in our basement, which we told the sales guy when he arrived to do the walkthrough. Without doing any real analysis other than spot checking, he made a big deal about how our basement would be humid and how we had seepage through our foundation walls (where?) and made a big deal about how we were putting our baby at risk by living in the house because of mold growth (we don't have any mold). We have an issue with water getting into our garage, but the cause of that is pretty obvious, the concrete around the garage entrance just needs to slope into our exterior drain more effectively. When my wife and I actually talked about the quote we figured out that, considering what we paid for the house (it's a 5-7 year starter home) it would actually be more cost effective to resell the house and move again than to move forward with DES. We were extremely put off by the salesman's analysis without any real data and found it an incredibly unrealistic and unnecessary solution relative to what we are trying to accomplish. He also made a big deal about our egress window in our basement not having a sump, and how that means it's not legally a bedroom, which as far as I can tell from the City of Fairfax's comprehensive documentation on finishing basements, is not true (and if it were, the seller's listing for the house was fraudulent and we would be going after them and not dealing with DES anyway, so there is really no benefit for DES to point this out other than chasing a cash grab). This is all to say after doing some research of our own and consulting with some trusted advisors we really felt like they were taking us for a ride with this proposal, and the "new baby health risk" play seemed a little too obvious and more like a scare tactic than a true solution. The rep did make an itemized list of the other options/things we wanted done on the house, but did so after coming up with a pretty shaky proposal that we didn't ask for, and kept going back to the baby thing. After our consult I installed some temperature and humidity sensors around our basement and with readings well below anything we'd need to worry about for our house there just isn't any real evidence of a water issue. Honestly, if anything our basement is too dry. We've decided to look for another contractor to do our grading and landscaping and will be extremely wary of "free" consultations in the future. read more

It has been a year and we still havent gotten the permit and there is absolutely no response or accountability on their part. Zero follow up and no reply to a job done.  I called another contractor who said they did the slope from the house all wrong.  I called the contractor because after 8 months, the slope put against the house to redirect the water away is now flat.  Do not recommend. The main indicator of any business relationship is your experience when something is not right or something goes wrong. How does the company respond? You just spent thousands of dollars. Something is not right. You repeatedly try to contact them in your distress and consternation. No response. Nothing. So what are you to do in this situation? I guess if you feel motivated, you could file a small claims suit against the company. Who has time for that? So what happens? Like so many other times in life, you are just resigned to eat "it". How does that taste? How good does that feel? Is that something you would enjoy? And then months later, they send you a request for a positive review of your experience??? A slap in the face basically. All you can do is laugh after a point. This total ghosting does not appear to be specific to just me after reading the other reviews. It appears that there is always some sort of excuse or plausible deniability, after they feel to compelled to respond (but only due to a Yelp review?). In my opinion, this appears to be pervasive and standard practice for this company. *Please note: There are numerous other reviews that sound all too common with my experience with this company. Too many to ignore. How is this amount of dysfunction or lack of respect for others allowed to thrive? In my opinion, there appears to be just so much business in this area. Why bother with proper business protocols when the next contract/payday can be scheduled in its place? Why bother the courtesy of returning calls or doing right by the customer or respecting the customer (who spends thousands of hard earned money), when you can focus on another willing payer of promised comfort and peace of mind? This appears to be such a phenomena in this area. I cant be the only person to have experienced this. I will never contract with anyone that has this type of review of non-responsiveness. At first they were attentive, however now trying to get them to respond ( a year later) to emails to fix problems under a warranty, they lack in response. We needed the culvert along our street repaired to prevent erosion. We have a lot on a curved corner with a downhill slope throughout. Storm runoff was creating a large and unsightly channel and depositing a lot of gravel and rocks the end where the street levels off. The water was also starting to eat away at the asphalt on our driveway. Drainage and Erosion Solutions installed a 130 foot drainage channel (an "armored swale") lined with fabric and 3'-8' river jack stone. They backfilled the eroded areas and stabilized the area between the street and the swale with gravel. We've received several compliments from neighbors who were impressed with the work. They also went above and beyond by mulching some adjacent areas. We would hire them again and highly recommend them to all. read more

I live at the bottom short decline of a street. As a result, I have had water pouring into my backyard and onto the driveway. It has been getting worse over the years with the neighbors up the hill changing landscaping and adding additions to their homes. I had three other companies come all landscaping companies. The landscaping companies wanted to put corrugated piping. That would not solve the amount of water that was coming into the yard. I contacted Drainage and Erosion Solutions for a fourth estimate. When I suggested a swale to previous landscaping companies, they would never say it was a good idea. So, when I contacted Drainage and Erosion Solutions and he agreed with me, I went with Drainage and Erosion Solutions. The employees of Drainage and Erosion Solutions are hydrologists so, they understand how water flows and come up with good ideas to divert water off the property. I had a swale put in on my property this week by Drainage and Erosion Solution. They did a great job. Everyone who came was friendly, answered my questions and finished the job in one day, Very happy with the work done. It is raining right now and the swale has diverted away from the house. I thought i did my due diligence and was looking forward to working with this company. Some minor office mis-communication but I will give benefti and attribute that to myself. Perhaps I inundated them with emails eg 2 of them, with the specifics of the work requested. I thought i was doing them a favor eg save time. Appointment for drainage and retaining wall. Saw rep go to house across street rather than mine. CAlled him on cell and advised wrong house. He stated, office put down wrong address. ok! mistakes happen. He walked around side of house and i was on deck. He had , what seemed to be a measuring tape, the type your roll on ground. He did appear to want to cross into back yard. Once i asked him where i wanted the french drain, he entered back yard. No measuring. I asked him if he had printout of my email or on his phone as i had requested office, he stated no. Took coupe pics and confirmed my email, stating he would send me an estimate. My instincts have carried me well. I will not hold breath on estimate. When the economy turns and it always does, although in DC my take longer, then they and ALL LANDSCPERS can compete with day laborers from the corner. In the meantime, i will continue my search and see if this company , and to their credit did not waste much of my time, other than that on doing my due diligence , which in retrospect found many negatives, although office claimed not "their company" poster is writing about. But BBB had 3 of them, unless i made mistake. One is too many. In 2022, I retained Drainage Erosion Solutions (DES) of Falls Church VA to install French drains and an external sump pump in my back yard. After installation, we had a heavy rainfall. A pond accumulated in my backyard. Jesse Fabrycky from DES said his crew did not properly connect the French drains to the exterior sump pump. He offered to have them come back to fix the problem and install a second sump pump for no additional charge. Work was done, but no second sump pump was installed as promised. He offered to install it if there was another ponding problem. A new drainage problem occurred. A broken interior sump pump was causing mildew damage in my lower level. Jesse recommended foundation treatments and replacement of the interior sump pump. Foundation work was completed, but no interior sump pump was installed. Thinking DES would come back and install it the next day, I paid the remaining outstanding balance due to the DES crew. I wrote to Jesse about the incomplete job. He wrote, "Yes sir I will get a guy over tomorrow am." No one came to finish the job. I called the DES office several times. I was placed on hold several times. No Jesse. No return call. Frustrated, I hired Tuckers HVAC of Maryland to install an interior sump pump, and asked DES to refund my money. Tuckers came to replace the sump pump and charged me $777. DES refunded the $2850 I paid for the sump pump replacement. I was surprised by the 3.7x price differential. read more

Drainage & Erosion Solutions were ranked tops in the book that we received from Fairfax on great contractors, and they are tops. They did extensive work on our new house in 2015, from installing downspouts and a sump pump with PVC pipes, and the downspouts went all the way to the end of backyard, and to front yard to curb core; they extended front left downspout 55 feet using buried PVC pipes, installed 2 window wells to crawl space vents for grading, and installed 2 yards of high density clay fill and grade to the right side of our yard for positive drainage away from our crawl space, to include swale. They installed yards of amended topsoil and 500 sq. of fescue sod to restore law. The removed and disposed of any bushes and debris not needed. They graded around our entire house using excavated clay fill. David Arias gave a great price and they made our yard look better than it had before we bought the house, and we've had no problems at all with our crawl space, sump pump or drainage. On January 27, 2016, I called Drainage & Erosion Solutions to see if someone in their company could come out and dig a 2' hole to bury our beloved pet of 15 years. I had called so many numbers, landscapers, etc. and all I got was voice mails, or companies out of business. I was besought with grief. We were willing to pay for this hard chore of digging through the snow and frozen ground (but we did not have much money since I lost my job last December.) I did not even tell David this. He just listened, and then said he could out and do this for free. I was so happy my Borre was going to get a proper burial ... I could not believe it. I was so struck by his kindness, I could not believe how nice he was ... Mr. Arias really has a heart of gold. Drainage & Erosion Solutions is as excellent a company as you will find in Northern Virginia or anywhere else. Above and beyond! Rarely does one find a company that is this good, this competent. After reading rave reviews on Yelp, I invited their point man, Jesse Fabrycky, to show me various options to solve the drainage problems on two properties. He did a beautiful job explaining (partially through photos) how the run-off from the rain gutters and sump pumps could be re-routed to the street and into the storm drains instead of our backyards. Everything buried, yard restored and beautified, can't miss. So, I signed two contracts. Yesterday (March 12) everything was finished and I am THRILLED. They were so careful, they were able to return the sod over the trenches once they were done, for example. They did things, small and large, that I didn't expect, that made things even better. Everything was hand-dug because we had so many buried hazards; electric power lines, gas lines, cable, phone, internet. We had an exceptionally poor experience with Drainage & Erosion Solutions. After paying more than $6K to complete the work recommended (sump pumps, window well), we had water come into the house (through the same window where work was done) just 10 days after the work was completed. Despite being told the work would be covered by a five-year warranty, the company would not honor this, saying they were not at fault. Customer service throughout with the company was also incredibly poor - the consultant Rick was unprofessional, and the office was incredibly unresponsive when trying to schedule the work. There is no possibility of us ever using this company's services again. Despite my telling Rick we wanted to install an additional sump pump installed outside our basement door, since water had come in through this area just a few days before, he left it off the estimate entirely, so I had to write it in myself when signing the paperwork and added the agreed amount to the deposit. Furthermore, when the team showed up to do the scheduled work, Rick had "forgotten" that we had decided to install this extra pump, so the team had to leave to purchase additional equipment before they could begin the work. To make things worse, Rick had explicitly told me the cord for the sump pump was 10 feet long, since I needed to install an external power outlet for the pump beforehand. When the team completed the work, and left without saying a word, I discovered they had left the newly-installed pump dangling unplugged since the cord was, in fact, only 6 feet long and could not reach the newly-installed outlet. When I called Rick to notify him of the issue, he laughed and said, "I should probably start telling people that the cord is 10 feet long then!" and did not offer to rectify the situation. Ultimately, I had to pay for additional work to be done by a separate contractor in order to make the sump pump cord reach the outlet. Then, as mentioned above, just ten days after the work was completed, we had rainwater come in through the same window where they had done work on the window well. After not showing up as scheduled at least twice, Rick came back out to look at the situation and was very argumentative when asked about the warranty. His demeanor was incredibly defensive and rude when I asked questions about the warranty and what was actually covered. Rick subsequently tried to convince me to pay an additional $850 to install a new window well, which he still couldn't guarantee would prevent water from coming in in the future. During the same conversation, he even tried to upsell me on an additional $6K job, which was pretty outrageous given the situation. The conversation finished with no agreement - he told me the office would call me to discuss details and scheduling. I didn't hear anything from the office for over 3 weeks and, in the meantime, decided we would not be contracting any additional work through this company. Despite not hearing a word nor signing any kind of contract for the work, a Drainage & Erosion team arrived unannounced at our house this weekend saying they were scheduled to fix the window well, at the $850 price. After getting Rick on the phone, and him saying the office was too busy to call, I ended up sending the work team on their way without doing the work. The customer service of this company is incredibly bad, and their advertised 5-year warranty is non-existent. I would strongly recommend against using for any waterproofing services. read more

Don't waste your time with this company. I waited days for an estimate (had to call multiple times to find out what was going on) and when they did finally get back to me, it was "oh, we lost the notes to your house" or "we're having computer problems". Someone finally got a quote to me and when I asked in writing if we could modify the scope (remove some items) to reduce the cost they immediately called me to tell me that if we paid for the job in cash then we could "get a discount". I was clear that I was not asking for a discount. I wanted to remove items from the scope to get to a project that we could afford. He got angry and told me that it was cash or no deal. When I questioned having to pay in cash (not a check - only cash he said), he told me that we "might not be a good fit" because I was asking too many questions. I've never heard of a reputable business requiring cash payments. I wouldn't give this company a cent of my money. Ever. read more
