We have used Bright Leaf services for several years now. We have had them completely re-do a mess done by a previous landscaping company that obviously did not know what they were doing. Jon and Beth came up with a plan that was reasonable and logical and took into consideration the amount of pesky deer we have to deal with. Since that time, we have used them to do fall and spring clean up and planting and to improve water drainage. These folks really know their stuff and I am very pleased. I am not given to hyperbole with respect to my contractors, but my property truly looks exquisite after the thought and care that Jon has put into it. Michelle did an excellent design to re landscape our house after 25 years. She carefully considered our preferences and the various light conditions in our yard. The installation done by Jon (the owner) and his team was high quality. They removed some very overgrown bushes and planted the new plants exactly according to the plan. They were even meticulous in cleaning up every day! I would highly recommend them. read more

Bright Leaf Landscaping is a family owned business. I had the pleasure of meeting Jonathan and his family at Shaw's Karate. Salt of the earth kind of guy. We recently moved to Durham, and loved the backyard - except for the area near the popup drain, where water flows when it rains, and mud and dirt were the major features in the hardpan clay under the shade of the trees. Jonathan set us up with a decorative river rock in the area downstream of the popup drain, mulch in the area where grass won't grow. He also talked us out of Azaleas in the shade under the trees, and recommended decorative plants that would actually grow in the area. And he added the ability to water them precisely with water saving emitters that water the plants - without watering the larger mulched area. My lovely wife is very pleased - and the next door neighbors enjoy the view from their deck. Michelle did a wonderful job planning the landscaping for my backyard. She and I met, she listened to my concerns and what I was looking for, and presented a comprehensive plan that took everything into account. The turnaround to installation was not long, and Jon and his crew did a wonderful job. Nice people - A surprising disappointment I hired Bright Leaf to create a plan for a sizable landscaping project on a house on three acres I recently purchased, including new plantings, irrigation, lighting, etc. I was particularly impressed by the owner Jonathan having been a master gardener at Duke Gardens for many years, and their many positive reviews. The person I met with on all but one occasion was his landscape designer Michelle. She (and Jonathan the one time I met him for about 10 minutes) were pleasant and clearly well intended. The initial plan she presented (which took considerably longer to present than what she had estimated) while professionally executed, was surprisingly disappointing in terms of both plant selection and creativity. I asked for and received at no additional charge some updates to the plan, which was better. I planned to have them complete the project for me until I received their bid, which was almost twice as much as we had discussed and 60-100% higher than several competing bids I received using the plan they provided (their bid also included considerably smaller - less mature plants than the others). During the entire process it seemed obvious they had a lot of other business, were probably understaffed, and even a $10,000+ project just wasn't a priority. To be fair, they appear to be capable people and i'm sure if I was willing to pay twice the price, the project would have been completed properly. I actually liked both Jonathan and Michelle personally and feel bad giving a negative review. Honestly they would have been much better off saying at the outset "sorry, but we're just too busy to take on this project right now" than handling it as they did. I think this is a great example of a small business experiencing "growing pains" that limited their responsiveness. Especially if you are going to charge a super-premium price you need to offer super premium service, and that clearly was not the case here. read more
