I got pad Thai with seitan and my boyfriend got the yellow curry with soy beef- they were both delicious. It came with so much yummy food we had to take our rice and some noodles home because we got so full. We got a Thai tea with green tea and that tasted amazing too with a floral hint. The servers were very kind and helpful and answered all the questions we had as non vegans. The design of the restaurant was cool too the have an open kitchen and you can see the chefs cooking away! Got a seat quickly for 2 people at this restaurant on a Thursday evening. The staff were nice and came by our table a lot to grab our order but we weren't ready each time because my girlfriend and I were playing catchup! It was until the 4th attempt that the waiter took the hint and waited for us to flag him over. He was very patient! As for the food, we ordered the pad see yew and pad kee mao (spicy) which was enough to the both of us to share. The flavor was there for the noodle dishes. One of the appetizers we bought was the crispy onion rings and the fried "shrimp" which was imitation crab. It felt very rubbery in texture and the flavor was not there. Wouldn't recommend it. The onion rings were good though --I liked the batter it was made with. The interior was cozy, there was searing for groups of 4 or 6 comfortably. I just want to preface by saying my mom and I enjoy vegetarian cuisine, and we have eaten vegetarian dishes from other Thai restaurants, so we came to Bright Star Thai Vegan thinking we would love it since they even specialize in vegan Thai dishes. The restaurant looked well staffed but of the staff they had, they were on the slow side. My mom and I shared the Bright Star Papaya Salad ($12.99), a large Tom Yum with Veggies ($12.99), and a Pad See Ew with Soy Chicken ($14.99). Once again I would like to emphasize that we tried the avoid dishes from other Thai restaurants, so we know these are dishes we normally enjoy. The papaya salad came out first. The presentation looked nice. As we took one bite... BLAND. What?? Normally this dish is so flavorful. Then the Tom Yum came out full with vegetables. Looked hopefully. BLAND. No notes of lemongrass at all. I questioned if they had any lemon grass in here, but then I bit into one. I noticed it wasn't smashed. Fail. You have to beat up lemongrass to release its essence. Then the pad see ew... SWEET! Whyyyyy is this sooooo sweettttttt??? Disgusting. I would even say inedible. The best thing about the dish was the soy chicken. Most of my reviews are positive, but this was depressingly underwhelming and inedible. It's night to have an option on the area for vegan Thai food! The staff is very nice and they do their best to make sure that even your take out order is packed carefully! The potions are also quite big, and they have lunch specials! I am always after a deal! I did knock a star off because I was cautioned that 10 would be too spicy for me and to go for a 5, and there was basically ZERO spice in my meal. I also felt the pad Thai lacked flavor... I tend to like a little wok hei or however it is spelled. I did like the spicy eggplant, except again, there was zero spice. Food is really good but one of the workers' is not very clean when handling food. For example and what me and my family seen, he swept the floor and with the broom in his hand he grabs someone's plate of food and then served it. And another time (same day) he went to the bathroom and I don't think he took his apron off. These were so delicious I also got the spicy eggplant, yellow miso soup(don't remember what it was called), and the classic fried rice with beef. But none of them stood out as much as the two listed above. Their service was awesome, the servers were really nice, and I enjoyed the fact that it was "family style", definitely a good place to go with friends but alone it could get a bit pricey. The service was rushed the waiter was super impatient even when we told him it was our first time there. We felt under pressure to hurry up and pick without even being able to study the menu. The food flavors were nothing exciting, and some of the textures left much to be desired, especially the fried rice. The orange chicken tasted nothing like orange chicken it was basically like tofu nuggets drizzled with agave syrup or smth similarly sweet. None of the dishes flavors hit the spot, but if we had to pick one that fared better than the rest it was probably the yellow curry with chicken. It had a bit more authentic flavor and zing to it. So, I was hesitant to try this place. Nothing against anything or anyone..Just a VERY picky eater and picky Thai food eater. I have a rough time finding good Thai food restaurants in IE (just moved from L.A.). I got the yellow curry with tofu and soy beef and when I received the box (togo) and opened it, i was pleasantly surprised. It was legitimate lunch portion...not a skimpy tiny box. I saw a dumpling, salad and scoop of rice and the curry full inside a clear container. (And a small container of miso soup) I was pleased that they actually filled the curry container, and didn't use half the container like some places might do. You GET your money's worth. $12.99 +$2 to add soy beef plus tax being about $16. Is perfect. I bit into the dumpling...very delicious little dumpling. I was bummed there wasn't more lol. The salad and dressing was perfect and the soup was delish. I was almost full by this point lol..but had to try the curry and soy beef. I took a bite and was pleased at the portion and flavor. Everything is seasoned well, and tasted just like regular Thai food might taste. Soy beef is hard to replicate with real beef but, it was flavorful still and was yummy..not chewy or bland. I've been a regular here for years and have always enjoyed it, but the service seems to have slipped lately. Visited recently with my 2-year-old daughter and wife on a quiet day. We were seated right away, but unfortunately, we weren't attended to after that--no menus or water, and the high chair we requested never arrived. The server was helping a couple of other tables and kept passing by without checking in. We consistently kept waving her down and she would look at us and just kept telling us to hold on. After about 20 minutes with a restless toddler, we decided to leave without ordering. It's a shame, as this used to be a favorite spot. My husband enjoyed the Kung Pao and said, it definitely could have been spicier.
