I was visiting a friend in Rancho and they took me to Bright Star Thai Vegan Cuisine. I really liked the concept of having a completely vegan Thai restaurant, especially since they still have versions of the classic Thai dishes you'd normally expect. We got the papaya salad, a couple of dishes with vegan chicken and beef, and Thai green tea. Everything was actually really good. The papaya salad had a nice flavor and I was surprised by how well the vegan meats worked with the dishes. The Thai green tea was good too. Overall, definitely a good vegan Thai spot and somewhere I'd come back to. I enjoyed everything, but it didn't necessarily have that wow factor for me to push it into a 4 star rating. 7/10 read more

Got a seat quickly for 2 people at this restaurant on a Thursday evening. The staff were nice and came by our table a lot to grab our order but we weren't ready each time because my girlfriend and I were playing catchup! It was until the 4th attempt that the waiter took the hint and waited for us to flag him over. He was very patient! As for the food, we ordered the pad see yew and pad kee mao (spicy) which was enough to the both of us to share. The flavor was there for the noodle dishes. One of the appetizers we bought was the crispy onion rings and the fried "shrimp" which was imitation crab. It felt very rubbery in texture and the flavor was not there. Wouldn't recommend it. The onion rings were good though --I liked the batter it was made with. The interior was cozy, there was searing for groups of 4 or 6 comfortably. Once again I would like to emphasize that we tried the avoid dishes from other Thai restaurants, so we know these are dishes we normally enjoy. The papaya salad came out first. The presentation looked nice. As we took one bite... BLAND. What?? Normally this dish is so flavorful. Then the Tom Yum came out full with vegetables. Looked hopefully. BLAND. No notes of lemongrass at all. I questioned if they had any lemon grass in here, but then I bit into one. I noticed it wasn't smashed. Fail. You have to beat up lemongrass to release its essence. Then the pad see ew... SWEET! Whyyyyy is this sooooo sweettttttt??? Disgusting. I would even say inedible. The best thing about the dish was the soy chicken. Most of my reviews are positive, but this was depressingly underwhelming and inedible. The potions are also quite big, and they have lunch specials! I am always after a deal! I did knock a star off because I was cautioned that 10 would be too spicy for me and to go for a 5, and there was basically ZERO spice in my meal. I also felt the pad Thai lacked flavor... I tend to like a little wok hei or however it is spelled. I did like the spicy eggplant, except again, there was zero spice. These were so delicious I also got the spicy eggplant, yellow miso soup(don't remember what it was called), and the classic fried rice with beef. But none of them stood out as much as the two listed above. Was visiting relatives and they recommended this place and it did not disappoint one bit. We got two lunch specials that came with a veggie dumpling, salad, miso soup, and brown rice for only $12.99! I got pad Thai with seitan and my boyfriend got the yellow curry with soy beef- they were both delicious. It came with so much yummy food we had to take our rice and some noodles home because we got so full. We got a Thai tea with green tea and that tasted amazing too with a floral hint. The service was rushed the waiter was super impatient even when we told him it was our first time there. We felt under pressure to hurry up and pick without even being able to study the menu. The food flavors were nothing exciting, and some of the textures left much to be desired, especially the fried rice. The orange chicken tasted nothing like orange chicken it was basically like tofu nuggets drizzled with agave syrup or smth similarly sweet. None of the dishes flavors hit the spot, but if we had to pick one that fared better than the rest it was probably the yellow curry with chicken. It had a bit more authentic flavor and zing to it. The rest was nothing we enjoyed at all, even the Thai tea at $7 was watered down and not tasty. It was our first and last time and we will never return again. So, I was hesitant to try this place. Nothing against anything or anyone..Just a VERY picky eater and picky Thai food eater. I have a rough time finding good Thai food restaurants in IE (just moved from L.A.). I got the yellow curry with tofu and soy beef and when I received the box (togo) and opened it, i was pleasantly surprised. It was legitimate lunch portion...not a skimpy tiny box. I saw a dumpling, salad and scoop of rice and the curry full inside a clear container. (And a small container of miso soup) I was pleased that they actually filled the curry container, and didn't use half the container like some places might do. You GET your money's worth. $12.99 +$2 to add soy beef plus tax being about $16. Is perfect. I bit into the dumpling...very delicious little dumpling. I was bummed there wasn't more lol. The salad and dressing was perfect and the soup was delish. I was almost full by this point lol..but had to try the curry and soy beef. I took a bite and was pleased at the portion and flavor. Everything is seasoned well, and tasted just like regular Thai food might taste. Soy beef is hard to replicate with real beef but, it was flavorful still and was yummy..not chewy or bland. I've been a regular here for years and have always enjoyed it, but the service seems to have slipped lately. Visited recently with my 2-year-old daughter and wife on a quiet day. We were seated right away, but unfortunately, we weren't attended to after that--no menus or water, and the high chair we requested never arrived. The server was helping a couple of other tables and kept passing by without checking in. We consistently kept waving her down and she would look at us and just kept telling us to hold on.
