I went for their Bocconi Tra Amici event with Chefs Bilena Settepani and Allison Fasano and it's definitely an amazing spectacle. I enjoyed the ambiance and everyone knew each other, embraced each other like family and the music was very old school family vibes! There was a pianist in for Wednesday and he also made friends as well! Since I went during the event this isn't going to be a review of their usual but I definitely would love to try their normal menu next time! FIRST OF ALL- The complimentary bread is delicious. We ordered all from Puglia's region so all the food was very interesting. The Acquasale was fresh and yummy and I loved the bread underneath the salad! I never had this before, we also had the baked mussels which were phenomenal. For main we had the orecchiette with braised beef and the fried calamari, cod, dorade and shrimp (Fritto misto). The orecchiette was slightly salty although very good a the Fritto misto was very yummy and made me super full! The food is good and the vibes are great so I would give it a 5 stars even though it's a tad bit too salty for me all over. The most fun thing about this really is ordering from the dessert cart! They'll come up with an old wooden cart with all the different selections they have and we got the tiramisu and they gave us their special as a gift (very generous thank you!) their pasticciotto which is a pastry puff with cherries and vanilla custard. I definitely am more of a tiramisu fan but this opened my eyes to new desserts I never tried before in Italian dining. I would give this place 4.5 stars. My daughter took me here to dinner when I was in NYC for business. She has always wanted to try it, and I love Italian food. I have to admit that I am a bit picky about it as well. She made a reservation, but we were a little early. They were a bit busy, but we were seated right away. The interior was a little dated, but nicely decorated, and quite comfortable. Our server had a nice Italian accent and was quite attentive. He took us through the entire menu. We started with some very nice Italian wine, the Olive E Giardiniera, and a marvelous scallop dish that was a special. The scallops were amazing. They were very fresh and topped with a little roe to give it some crunch. We both ordered entrees that were nightly specials. My daughter had a very flavorful pasta dish that she absolutely loved. I had a sirloin steak in a wonderful cream sauce. The steak was served sliced. I couldn't finish the steak because I ate a couple of pieces of bread with the sauce. My daughter had the Tiramisu for dessert which she loved. The restaurant was a great value considering we each had an appetizer, entree, one dessert and 4 glasses of wine. I've been wanting to try this place and got takeout recently, was very impressed! The orata (fish) was the highlight, somehow some of the skin remained crispy even in the takeout container, the saffron sauce had a wonderful flavor, and the greens and mussels were nice textural counterpoints to soak up the sauce. I also got the chicory salad, which was pretty standard. I'm not sure why restaurants tend to make these bitter as all heck and then add citrus and brine on top of it, but that's what you end up getting anywhere. I'd add some nuts or cheese for some richness, but that's not the typical vibe of a chicory salad so if you enjoy those you'd probably like this one, more of a me thing. Finally tried this place out. Grab ambiance and intimate experience. They def don't rush you even though it can get really busy. Rezzie is recommended and you can cancel close to time without fee but if no show, there's a fee. The pasta dishes are very flavorful. Their focaccia is amazing, I could eat that all day. We had the salad too and it was really good, even though I usually don't order salads at restaurants. We had a cacio e pepe and asparagus special and that was good, although cheese flavor is super strong. Salty and tangy. The tomato paste rigatoni was super good too and cooked to a perfect al dente. Want to try the bolognese next. This place preferences strong flavors I think. The ingredients on all their apps and pastas seemed like it. The menu has a good selection or apps, pastas and plates. The focaccia in the basket is delicious and good to be dipped with the olive oil. The pastas were all solid, nothing too crazy but didn't quite fill us up. Flavors were good, but for the contents, the price was a bit steep. We were so happy to get a table Sunday night. We popped in and there happened to be a couple openings. It's a small restaurant with a few communal high tops and little two-tops along the wall with banquette seating. It is really loud inside so just a note if you're taking your parents or are noise-sensitive. Service was friendly and efficient. Listen closely because the Italian accents are strong! The food was, of course, fantastic. We started with the tomato salad: perfectly tart vinegar dressing and the bacala: crispy-fried to perfection. Our two pastas were exceptional. Modern Italian restaurant with a creative menu. Many familiar dishes with interesting twists. We started with mussels in a green broth. Mussels were perfectly tender. The broth was on the lighter side allowing the briney flavor to stand out. I made sure to soak up every bit of broth with an extra basket of bread. Next came out the frittelle and the mushroom risotto. Frittelle is a squash fritter which ate more like a dessert than an appetizer. It tasted like a slightly cheesy doughnut earring heavily on the doughnut side. Risotto was a hit. Super cheesy with more of a mild and savory flavor rather than the poignant flavor of lost risottos. Similarly to the mussels, the risotto had a perfect texture as well. We shared three mains amongst the four of us for the main course. I'd say three appetizers plus three mains was plenty for four. We added a couple desserts at the end which might have been just a couple too many bites for me. My favorite main was the black squid ink spaghetti. It was one of the most polarizing dishes. Truly a hate it or love it, and I loved it. It was very clamy relying on deep ocean flavors. Based on the intensity of the dish, I suspect the clams used in it might have been canned or tinned adding to bold flavor. I'm a fan of canned and tinned seafood, so I liked the boldness. The spaghetti had a perfect texture leaning to the chewy al dente side. I suspect the spaghetti was housemade. Second favorite main was paccheri. Possibly a homage to the Italian flag, it had plumps of red sauce, fresh white cheese, and green oil. Similarly to the spaghetti, the pasta was on the doughy side which I prefer. Quite the medley of flavors. The final main that we had was the 25k tagliolini. The dish is named after the story that the chef won $25,000 from this dish. It came with a creamy, lemon sauce similar to a francese. The differentiating component is that the dish is made with sweatbreads which is supposedly a euphemism for certain animal organs. It didn't have the gamey or organ like flavor that I anticipated and was quite mild compared to the squid ink dish. I was stuffed at this point, but my friends insisted on dessert. I had a spoonful of the tiramisu and a spoonful of the pistachio cake/pie. I preferred the tiramisu. It was light and airy. Prominent coffee flavor from the dusting on top. Service was attentive. They quickly refilled our water carafe many times. Our table was promptly cleared between courses. Pacing of the food was excellent too. They have a full bar plus a couple beer options. Focus of the beverage menu is on Italian wines. Lots of affordable options by glass and by the bottle. A very approachable and unpretentious wine list. The food, wine, and desert was all delicious. Our server was lovely. My only complaint: We specifically asked that we not receive our entrees until we were finished with our appetizers. Our server promised that would be fine. That did not happen. They shoved our appetizer plates to the side and slid our entrees in their place. When I said to the food runner that we were not finished with our first course, he looked at me and shrugged, like "This is how it is; deal with it." I don't care if it's Saturday night and you want to turn the table as much as possible. Briscola is not a cheap place to eat. If you are going to spend $100 or more per person for dinner, you should be able to eat at your own pace. What's the point of having some of the best Italian food in Brooklyn if you can't sit and enjoy it the way you would in Italy? It defeats the whole purpose. read more

My partner's family loves to play Briscola. They play at every family function. They even have Briscola tattoos. So when i learned that there was a Briscola themed restaurant i couldn't wait to take them. On a cold winters afternoon we decided to take the subway there but not before checking online to make sure they were opened in the afternoon. The internet said they opened at noon so we planned to arrive around 3:00 in order to make a 6:15 movie after. I liked sitting at a communal table (and getting to peek at other people's food) but if you're not into that you may have to wait a bit to get seated. I've been meaning to try this place for a while and was excited to go because I love Italian food. The menu had some interesting options- I got the pork chop and my friend got the ravioli. The dishes looked and sounded good, but after a few bites the sauces were really acidic and over seasoned. The pork chop also came with a salad, just lettuce no vegetables, and slices of ham. For $38 it wasn't worth the price. I liked my salad at first but after a few bites it was overly acidic, along with the pork chop. I had an early dinner on the patio with a friend who was a bit under the weather so unfortunately we had to wrap our dinner earlier than we'd hoped. When I got home to unpack the leftover pasta I discovered that they added a surprise dessert to our bag in the most adorable little jar! Wonderful spot! I came on a Wednesday evening with a friend. The service was friendly, warm, and inviting from the moment I stepped through those doors. Ambiance gave local, cozy spot that was full of charm. We didn't have a reservation so we opted for bar seats instead of waiting and honestly, I love sitting at the bar. The energy from the bartender was just wonderful and I loved the drink that he whipped up for me. The staff also must have eyes on the back of their heads because they were that exceptional balance of leaving you alone, yet immediately making eye contact with us whenever we needed something. We went for the ragu bolognese and my friend went for the ravioli, and honestly we practically devoured our meal. It was flavorful, the pasta was perfectly cooked, and I ended up scrapping up every last bit of sauce- couldn't help myself. My friend and I ended up chatting and catching up for quite a bit and never once did we feel rushed despite the room getting busier and busier as the night progressed. Overall lovely experience. We were excited to try this place which is close to our family's home in Crown Heights and had good reviews. We were told as soon as we settled in at 5:30 that we had to leave at 7. Our group was 5 adults and 3 kids some of whom just drove in from Philadelphia, others that trekked from Harlem and some that were visiting from LA. It was our first time seeing each other and we chose Briscola for it's warm feel and good food. We were not treated nicely almost as if we were an inconvenience. They had to put some tables together for us and 7 pm came and went and there was no one waiting to be seated. By this time half our group had left with the kids and so we were only using half of the tables for the rest of us who stayed and ordered drinks and dessert. No one sat in the other 4 seats that were now free. I'm not sure if they were trying to make the place feel exclusive or what their point is but the service is definitely sub par especially for the amount of money you spend per person. Needless to say our one reunion outing with friends was not as enjoyable and relaxing as we had hoped. I think if the restaurant wants to limit people's time, they should let you know when you call for a reservation. And if you want people to have a good experience, be nice. And this I say directly to the owner/ manager (male) who was especially rude to my friend who went back on another occasion telling her she was unwelcome. We have seen restaurants come and go in our 20 years in Crown Heights. We were here before you and we will be here after you're shut down due to terrible customer service. I suggest you take a hard look at your bad attitude and rethink your approach. You're easily replaceable and of course you have lost the business of well-off professionals that like to eat out and refer people to restaurants. Was very excited for this new place spearheaded by Silvia Barban. I've walked by it many times and have admired the charm it's outdoor setup exuded. It's equally cute on the inside. Unfortunately, had a less than stellar first visit. While we were lucky enough to be seated immediately for an early Sunday dinner, the host was a bit brisk and rude about the limited time we'd have the table. The food, however, was the biggest disappointment. I ordered the Spaghetti al Nero di Seppia. While the flavor was good and the cuttlefish was creamy and delicious, the pasta was so al dente it made the meal as a whole barely edible. It's been a long time since I've left a restaurant that hungry. My friend ordered the tagliatelle al ragu. The success of this dish was banking on the hot pasta warming through a cold ragu, which was only further hindered by the extra helping of the cold ragu on the side. This place has a lot of charm! A lovely addition to the Crown Heights neighborhood. Super friendly and attentive service matched by mouthwateringly delicious Italian fare. We started with the fritelle (zucchini fritters) and salumi. The fritelle were lightly fried and served with a lemon wedge. They were a bit sweet for my taste but we ate them all the same. The salumi plate was fabulous. The pancetta and prosciutto were sliced paper thin and pared perfectly with the hunks of sourdough bread. We shared the two special pastas that night: lasagna verde and doppio raviolo. Both were fantastic. The pasta was so delicate for both dishes.
