This place has the best food! I went in for the Shepherds pie on Thursday and ended up getting the delicious pho (that they only have on Thursday) so I went back on Friday and Saturday. The chicken curry was fantastic and the Shepherds pie was great as well. I had a bite of the fish and chips and those were tasty. The service was 5 , especially for being short staffed. Had a great breakfast here on August 6, 2018. Even though we came in past 11am, and on a Monday, they still served us breakfast. I think the menu says breakfast only on Friday and Saturday. The server, Maryah, was on point. Friendly and attentive. Breakfast was very good and large portions. Had the Popeye omelette, was tasty with good chunks of Canadian bacon. Great location, sitting outside looking at the beach is always wonderful. Staff is nice. Friend had steak sandwich & enjoyed it. The onion rings were a bit over cooked. I had the combination fish & chips w/ shrimp. I little bit greasy (but remember this is an English pub). The fish portion was huge! I had to take half of it to go. First time here and I'm a fan. This location in pretty new (a year old in June '12) from what I'm told, but the way it was packed on a Friday, you'd never know it. My friend lives up the street and is a regular. She sits down and the Cider is waiting for her (that kind of regular). Steve, Ryan, and Noel were great and efficient behind the bar. Hats off to them for being top of it all on a busy night. The Blackthorn Cider on tap was great! My friend and I got in for Happy Hour, so the apps we got were half off. Always good! The calamari was great. Tender and grilled to a nice brown color. The cocktail sauce was flavorful without being too overwhelming. Well done Brit! The sampler basket was killer too. It was filled with fried zucchini, mushrooms, and onion rings. There was an outdoor patio on the side of the Brit, so if you want to sit outside, knock yourself out. read more

This place is incredible! It's right by the beach so it's easy to stop and get something either while you're there or at the end of the day before you head home. Everyone who works there was so nice and everything was very clean. The food came out quickly even though they were very busy and everything tasted great! I don't know if it's the kind of containers they use or something but we decided to walk back to our house, which only took us like 20 minutes, but when we got back the fries were still crispy and everything was still hot as if we ate it right away! We don't live in the area but we vacation there all the time and we will definitely be going back! read more

I love English pubs. And this is the most English a pub can get without being in the UK. They have brown sauce, big portions, Guiness on draft, a very friendly/social atmosphere and staff, and the food is AWESOME. Try a Snakebite. If you don't know what one is, don't ask, just try one. They make the best on I've ever had! Also, their patio is absolutely dog-friendly. Which is a wonderful thing to be able to say, and nice to be able to find. Try the fish and chips here. It's like they take an entire fish, bread and fry it and put it on a plate. How do the waitresses carry it? It's huge! There's outdoor seating, with a view of the beach. The indoor seating is surrounded by TVs, often running soccer. The service is great and it's clean. If you're heading to the beach, or coming back from it, this is a great casual spot to grab a bite. read more

I did a bid in Santa Cruz than went here for some fish and chips. The bartender was rude! I asked if they would have the Thursday Night football game and he looked at me like I was asking a weird question. He said if it isn't on regular TV than no! Fine. Can I get the wifi pass word? Instead of telling me the password he shoves a napkin dispenser with the code on it that has had 30 beers spilled on it and I couldn't read it. Dude just tell me the passwordl! He leaves it there for two minutes than moves it. In the meantime I observe him being rude to his customers who seemed to be regulars. Than I look over my shoulder and see the game on a TV behind me. I say thought game wasn't on? He says that's NFL network! I thought you only had regular TV!? Bottom line I want a friendly bartender. Especially if I am about to spend $80. If I want to argue with someone I would stay home with my girl. This guy needs to find another line of work. I had one beer and left. I'm calling the manager tomorrow for sure. My first time coming to Brittania Arms and I thought it would be convenient because it's right at the corner of the beach. I had a water bottle that had gotten hot so I went to ask for a cup of ice. I asked the waitress, and she said no problem just ask the bartender. I went in to ask the bartender and the man working is the reason I am writing this review. I asked him if I could have a cup of ice (maybe I should have asked for ice water but I was trying not to be an inconvenience). He asked me if I had a table he could bring it to and I said no I had a water I just wanted to cool down with ice. I let him know I was going to drink it outside and he gave me a glass cup with ice. I again let him know I was going outside to get my water and thanked him. I went outside to get my water bottle and he chased me down yelling at me saying I ran off with his cup. I walked back to him confused because I had let him know multiple times I was just going to drink my water. He grabbed the glass out of my hand and THREW the ice out on the ground right in front of me and said "you can buy a cup of ice then." I was so surprised and didn't know it was a big deal because we had completely talked about my intent, multiple times! I came back inside and waited at the bar to buy my cup of ice and I could hear him bad mouthing me to not only another waitress, but also one of the men sitting at the bar. He silently stared at me until I said "how much is a cup of ice?" He answered "$1." I said okay I would be right back with my dollar because I didn't have my wallet and he said "I'm not even going to sell you a cup of ice have a nice day." At this point I was so annoyed I said "okay sir sounds good!" And I walked across the street to Bay Bar and Grill where they were much nicer to me and the employees were all wearing masks as it states on the door! I'm not mad about him wanting to charge me for the ice, I'm mad about the disrespect I faced by him snatching the cup, throwing the ice on the ground, and talking crap about me to everyone in the bar as I'm standing right there. I was disappointed in this restaurant, given the name. Our plan was to have a few drinks and get something to eat but quickly changed our minds. Went in to use the restroom prior. There was this funky smell as you walked into restaurant, the restroom smelled even worse. I'm not sure what it was. When the waiter came to take our order she seemed in a rush, she spoke quickly and move quickly (strange). We decided to only order drinks because we were seated already. I was honestly appalled by our waitress this evening. I paid my bill, left a tip and she ran after me wanting more. She rudely accused me of failing to tip her what she thinks she earned. This is not how restaurants work. A tip is not mandatory, and no waitress should ever tell their customer how much they have earned. She then went on saying that they do not accept cash tips. I eat there twice a month on average. Needless to say, my friend is having a huge birthday party & 10 of his closest friends meet at the Brit for dinner for pre-party fuel up! One guy didn't get his beer for 20 minutes or more. The waitress was sweet, but was rushed and auctioned our plates and drinks as if we were picking up to go orders. We had made a reservation for 10 & our tables were set for 8. I had to pull another two-top table into the group and locate and move chairs myself. Wait.... It gets better- As we leave our fellas are talking with Andy (the owner) outside, when the ladies walk out. Andy says to the guys (and I quote) "I hope nobody has to f@ck the fat one"! For the record, and not that I need to substantiate this... But I am a size 16 and I am 5'6; It's not like I am freaking Honey Boo Boo's mom! As a local, went there to watch the opening ceremonies for the Olympic games as advertised on the outside sign. Started out good enough, but then became loud and boisterous with what must be the Friday night DJ and his posse of hoodlums. So was completely unable to enjoy the latter half of the show (but did our best nonetheless). After dropping $300 on drinks and appetizers, just mentioned to the owner that he shouldn't have advertised an Olympics evening and then superseded it with the house music half way through the show. We thought it was just a little constructive feedback. His response was to tell us to f"*% off and never come back. Then he physically grabbed one of us and literally kicked (with his foot) us out of the place. Felt compelled to file a police report afterwards... Needless to say, will NEVER be back and advise all others to avoid this hole in the wall. Shame since the service wasn't bad. But can't deal with business owners who refuse to take a bit of feedback from their patrons... Let me just start off by saying my family has been coming to Capitola for years and this was possibly the rudest service I have ever received in my life. I work in the food industry, and I know how annoying it can be when rude people come in, but I can assure you if they consider the following scenario rude or annoying, they're in the wrong industry and need a major reality check. Today is my Dad's 51st birthday and if you know my dad, he's probably the nicest guy you will ever meet. He was a bartender/waiter for years growing up so he has respect for people who run a bar and everywhere he goes he makes friends. I came all the way from San Francisco to celebrate (and be the groups DD). We had just finished having an amazing time at the Fog Bank with family and friends when the Giants game was about to be on. My Dad wanted to hop bars, told everyone to meet at Britannia Arms because they have multiple TVs and it's usually less crowed in there. WELL NOW WE KNOW WHY. We walk in, maybe 15 people seated total, games about to start the blonde with colored hair smiles and says "take a seat wherever you like, guys" we then look around and realize we might have to put some tables together to fit everyone, my dad asks "hey is it okay if we move these tables together?" the older Irish woman replies something like, "that's perfectly fine, go right ahead". Before I even take a seat I see that the sun is shining right behind the tv we are trying to watch. I ask is it okay if we switch tables? This apparently made them mad. And another staff says "so you're not taking both tables, right?" My dad says "no we just wanna sit here instead and watch the game". I get up and separate the tables we had pushed together, in effort to help them out a bit. Then all the women in the staff are all questioning him "so are you done moving tables?", "where would you like to sit sir?" My dad quickly changes his mind on everyone meeting up there and decides to just stand at one of the two top tables. But I guess that was unheard of too, the strawberry blonde older Irish woman who works there says, "oh people are gonna sit here" and my dad says "okay Hun let me just finish my beer and I promise if someone needs to sit here I'll move". She goes "well were gonna roll silverware here so you need to move." My dad pulls the blonde manager aside and says "sorry I didn't mean to stir things up, it's my birthday and we were going to spend a lot of money here, I'm just making sure there's no tension here because I'm not sure what we did wrong" and she told my dad "I'm sorry sir, they should have just let me handle it". My dad closed his tab and brushed it off. After we left, I told my sister and we called asking to speak to the manager, I told her what happened and she said "oh wait are you talking about the annoying blonde guy?" I was actually speechless. I said "excuse me? I'm just calling to tell you how your staff was rude and how you can in the in the future better the experience of your customers." And she replied, I kid you not, "yeah well we value our customers, but you are not a valued customer here so we don't want your feedback" ... Wait. Seriously? She rambled about how we were drunk moving tables... I'm 20, so not only can I not legally drink, but I was the DD that night and my dad was maybe two beers in. At that point I just told them they lost at least 300 dollars worth of service and if that's not a valued customer then I don't know what is and hung up. Went to the others bars that night, told them the story, and sadly to say, none of them were surprised. I guess that's expected at that bar. Terrible management, rude staff, but hey, my dad said he liked his beer so 1 star for you Britannia arms, you go Britannia arms! Nice beer selection. A major life perspective check is needed by this entire bar. You work in beautiful Capitola, at a good location in one of the most desired places to be in the world. Lighten up! Life is too short to get fussy over table tops. read more

A waitress came out and ignored us as well. We had to step up to the bar and stand there to get someone to pay attention to us. We asked if we should seat ourselves. We were told yes. I grabbed a menu and we and onto the patio. The 2 patrons out there already had their food. We sat there for 5 minutes. Then we noticed 3 guys walk in and sit down inside. Within seconds the waitress was there, waiting on them. We decided not to wait to see if we would ever get severed and left. Excellent service across the street. Will never return to BA again. I have been such a fan of this place for so long, but I don't think I will ever go back there. Yesterday I met a group of friends down there for drinks. It was a group of six - so not too big, but we were ordering a good amount of stuff. Our waitress came over, clearly drunk. She took our orders then would forget about them until we flagged her down 15-20 minutes later. This kept going for a good hour or so. My friend ordered a drink and at one point we are pretty sure she forgot about it and we saw her drinking it. We got over it and wanted to go somewhere else. We flagged her down for the bill -which again took 30 minutes or so to get. The kicker was we were charges for a drink we did not get. We flagged her down to explain it to her, which again at this point you could tell she was completely drunk and not understanding. My friend decided to go around her to someone we thought was the manager (not really sure though). He told this women we needed our bill fixed and that our waitress was drunk. Our waitress then ran over to him with a coors light and said "don't worth we are cool". The real kicker of it all is the person my friend talked to "had no idea she was drunk". Are you kidding me. When we are trying to leave the waitress comes up to me right in my face and drunkly asked what the problem was. This is such unacceptable service - even for a bar. I can't believe I spent the amount of money that I did there. Will never go back and I will tell people to go to the San Jose locations. read more

I have lived in this village for many years and fully support our local business, but If I could give the Britannia Arms less stars I would. My family and I have never been treated worse then when we visited this restaurant. If it wasn't the drugs that were being sold in the bathrooms or the pimp that propositioned my brother in-law and myself, the owners terrible violent reaction when we brought it to his attention was even worse. We came in and ordered coffee along with hot chocolate for kids. After we ordered the same waitress and server at the bar kept asking of we were going to place an order. We mentioned we ordered coffee and hot chocolate, but they seemed to be irritated with our group for no apparent reason other than our race. Once our order came out the waitress didn't hesitate to tell us to leave because a party of ten was coming in. We felt displeased and humiliated with their uncomfortable demeanor and left. We went outside to the Mermaid event to finish our drinks. Out of curiosity I walked by to see if in fact they had the party of ten seated, but I only saw a man with two children seated at one table in the same area. Worst experience I've ever had. We sat and ordered two drinks (Black Velvet and a Jack and Coke) and an order of chicken nachos. We asked for no onions and no tomatoes and our server Laura seemed to understand as she read back our order to us. She came to drop off the drinks, and didn't come back until our nachos were ready. As she's dropping the nachos off at our table, she says "oh you ordered no onions..." And I was just happy to accept them anyway, they looked delicious! But about 3-4 bites into the nachos, we noticed the cheese was a bit overboard and not melted very much. It took 20 minutes for Laura to return to our table (as she had been greeting about 5-6 other tables.) And when I said we both didn't like our nachos, and asked to have the nachos sent back or remade. She laughed, and said "Sorry you should have said something sooner because now I can't do anything for you." And then I said "no, I'm not looking to have them taken care of, I just want to have them taken away from my table." She said "I've never had anyone complain about too much cheese on nachos, I'll grab our owner to talk to you." I said "M'am my issue isn't paying for the meal, I just wasn't happy with the food." And our conversation was ended by her walking away with the nachos laughing. Dropping off our check without eye contact or a word, not even thank you. I have been coming to the Britannia Arms in Aptos since I was a little girl, my family was excited about a new one being opened in Capitola since it is somewhat closer to where we live. Tonight was the first time I came to dinner at this location with my family, who've all had fish and chips there, and have raved about them. I can't go to a British restaurant without ordering the bangers and mash, so that's what I got. The bangers were O.K, the vegetables were whatever. However, the mashed potatoes were instant. This, in my family-- born mostly in Ireland and England, is a crime. I politely inquired about them, the waitress was nice and went back to speak with the manager, who told her that they were real. Listen, potatoes have been a major part of my diet for my entire life, it's a primary factor is most British and Irish meals. They were instant, and I would bet a lot of money on that. I confronted the manager and told her how disappointed I was about them, and then to be deceived. She frantically denied it, and said that SHE would go back and taste them to tell me if they were instant. Well, we saw her go back to taste them and then she never came back out, so we left. They were instant, she lied, and it was incredibly unprofessional to treat loyal customers in this fashion. My family love the fish and chips, so they may return; but I won't. read more
