After a stroll along the beach, we run into Britannia Arms and suddenly felt nostalgic for our trips to the UK. We were greeted by a friendly server who gave us a choice of tables (outside, of course). We had the traditional Irish breakfast and the traditional English breakfast, which were exactly the same except the Irish breakfast includes black pudding, something I wasn't familiar with. Turns out it's pork blood sausage, which I wasn't a fan of, but I'm sure it's a favorite of the Brits. The rest of the breakfast was a delicious feast, consisting of bangers, perfectly cooked eggs, English bacon (which is like ham), fried potatoes, toast or English muffin, and choice of tomatoes, mushrooms, or beans. It's a lot of food that can easily be shared. They have a great location overlooking the beach, which makes for a great outdoor dining experience. Loved it! We came in while exploring g the area and ended up enjoying delicious cold beer, having some good food and hearing some entertaining Karaoke! We hung out here pretty much all Friday night and started by just hanging at the bar and enjoying beers and each other's company. Our bartender was Irish and poured a great Guinness! My friends all got the Tangerine Wheat but I stuck with Guinness because it's delicious! I did appreciate that they had Tangerine Wheat though, it's a fantastic beer and great when it's hot out! After a few hours Karaoke started and things started getting crazy! There were a bunch of groups that came in and some great and not so great singers. I will say that everyone had a great time though!! Throughout all the craziness out bartender kept us hydrated, all it took was a little eye contact and a nod from us and we had another round of beers! I will say the bar is the spot to be! We met some great people and of course it's easier to keep your drink filled when you're sitting right there. If you do have a spot and need to leave for the bathroom make sure someone's is watching your seat! There were some people trying to poach ours the whole time, luckily we used the buddy system to keep them saved after the seal was broken. I learned they serve food until 11 which is awesome!!! I had the corned beef sandwich and it definitely paired with my Guinness well! I would definitely recommend coming here for beers, to watch a match on TV or for some weekend entertainment! read more

The waitress (with shoulder length strawberry blonde hair) took 15 minutes just to greet us and take our orders, she forgot to bring our waters...then 30 minutes after she took our order, she informs us the kitchen closed and our orders didn't make it. We went down to the Esplanade to support the restaurants last night and ended up at Britannia Arms. It had been a few years since we had been there last. The food was ok, same with the service, but the restaurant is so gross and the bathroom worse. I'm talking paint peeling, table covers ripped, and chairs sticky and broken. Investment is needed to bring it back to the level of dive bar. We are not going back until this happens. read more

My first meal "at" Britannia Arms was via takeout during the COVID SIP. I had what turned out to be the best takeout hamburger I have had in my life. It was outstanding. It is difficult to make a hamburger that survives the takeout process but Brittania Arms does it perfectly. The key was the light and delicious bun. It was firm enough so it didn't get soggy, but light enough that it didn't seem dense. The meat was perfectly cooked (I like it medium/medium-well). My hubby had a Reuben and he loved it. He's a huge fan of sauerkraut and he said it tasted great and the meat wasn't too fatty. The service was fast. We ordered with Doordash and it got to our house within 35 minutes. Outstanding. We will be back to enjoy the inside of the restaurant once the SIP is lifted. If we are not ordering food, we won't sit at a table because we know better (hint hint, Blanca G!) read more

The last time I went to Britannia Arms was when it was at its Aptos location. It was always good and one of my favorite places when visiting the area. My friends and I decided to try the new location in Capitola. Two local friends advised us not to, saying that the food quality had gone way down. We went anyway hoping for the best. Upon arrival I immediately noticed that one of my favorite dishes from the past, lamb shank, was gone from the menu. I ordered another favorite, corned beef and cabbage. The corned beef was very dry with little flavor, the cabbage was very mushy. My friends had fish and chips, and a corned beef sandwich, which they both rated as a one. I'm sorry to see that the Britannia Arms no longer cares about serving quality food. I will miss going there. read more

Yes, the place has seen better days and it truly does feel like you're in a seedy locals pub in rural England where you might come to throw back a few beers with the rugby team and pick up some overly fake tanned Essex type girls. But true to it's name, the place does do a good British style fish and chips. It's hard to find fish and chips in America that aren't crumbed; Britannia Arms makes a great beer battered fish and chips for a reasonable price. read more

An encounter with white privilege My boyfriend and I had without a doubt a pure experience of white privilege at its worst. Because of the color of our skin, being Latinos. Myself, Mexican American. My boyfriend, Salvadoran, dark skin. The hostess, older white blond lady, ignored us and escorted two white ladies to a table outside instead. My boyfriend and I came to visit Capitola for the first time, spending our Valentine's Day together after a long week working as healthcare workers. We decided to stop by at The Brittania Arms for some burgers. We were already aware that the majority of people we have seen are white. We came inside to look for the hostess. We waited until she was available to greet us. Not once did she look at us. I said excuse me?. An older white lady comes in and asked us if we were waiting in line. I thought she meant the bathroom. I told we're waiting for a table. She approaches hostess at the bar and asked for a table outside. She tells her friend to sit down at the table that was available. I told the hostess "Excuse we're also waiting for a table". She hostess says "ok" and goes back inside like nothing. At that time, my boyfriend was already walking away, and said "I don't want to eat here anymore, not even worth it". If anything about this moment is clear, it's that racism isn't some bogeyman. It's real and it's a problem. The point is, your skin color affords you certain privilege in society that you may not even realize. I felt disgusted. My face must have reflected my shock and dismay. Not once did the hostess greet us or ask us if do we need a table. At that point, I felt so degraded and hurt. Rejected. We can not change my skin colour or our ethnicity, nor do we choose to change my religion. We hope and pray someday we as a society will grow beyond situations like this. read more

They had a "mask required" sign up, so I put mine on, walked in and 90% of the patrons were not wearing a mask, I order a Bloody Mary, he had no idea how to make one, put an olive WITH the pit in my drink, very lock lucky I didn't Crack a tooth! This place has the best food! I went in for the Shepherds pie on Thursday and ended up getting the delicious pho (that they only have on Thursday) so I went back on Friday and Saturday. The chicken curry was fantastic and the Shepherds pie was great as well. I had a bite of the fish and chips and those were tasty. The service was 5 , especially for being short staffed. Fun and casual atmosphere! Lots of locals, but gets a good fill of tourists as well. Great place to watch sports games, they label which games will display on each TV so that you can situate yourself accordingly. Food wise, fish and chips are excellent, the thickness of the fish is great and the beer batter is not overly coated, not greasy. The shepherd's pie was the first I ever had and the only one to date, I thought it was done really well however I have not had any other. Surprisingly, the pork chop dinner is amazing. The chops are a rather good size and have never been overcooked, nice and moist with great flavor. If you're feeling like a sandwich, the corned beef on rye is extremely tasty, not dry at all. The chicken sandwich is pretty basic, but is an excellent offering as well. Pretty amazing view if you're in the Capitola area. Owners are often on site and the staff is very accommodating and friendly. I more than happily visit the Brit in Capitola, definitely recommend it if you have never been.
