The only reason the are getting a star is because the drink I got (after waiting 20 minutes to get) was great. The bartender saved them. Other then than that it was the worst service I've ever had. My other half received his drink and waited for me to arrive. I couldn't find parking so he was waiting a little longer than we wanted. They didn't bring him a menu or even ask if he wanted one. I arrive they ask if I want a menu I say yes, and a drink. No menus. Waited 20 minutes for the drink and watch the waitress' walk back and forth. Finally I ask a different waitress for a menu and with attitude I get one. At this point we can tell wait service will be like so we pay for the drink and go. Terrible service. If you want food. this place is awesome! I have always been a fan of the other britts around the bay area but this one being by the ocean makes it that much better. Every Saturday a few of us friends go down for breakfast which is always amazing. Eggs benedict is the best Ive ever had. But I think the reason we are always going back is for the bottomless mimosas for $9. They are always good about refilling when needed. I've only been here a few times during the night hours and is usually pretty slow, (maybe the place is still a little unknown) but they have most of my favorite beers on tap. My husband and I have a friend that lives locally so for the past couple years we've been to this place several times and I really love it. We sit outside each time, can't beat that ocean view. My husband absolutely loves the French Dip he gets it every time we go, and he tries one at every restaurant that we go to and this place has his absolute favorite. I've tried the Cornish Pastie and Shepherd's Pie, both delicious. Their chips (fries) are also seriously good. The waitresses are very nice ( I always enjoy being called 'love') makes me think of my mum. They can be super busy so sometimes you have to grab their attention if you need something, but I don't mind that, they can't be in 10 places at once. The star of the show was the fish and chips, which we both ordered. Nice flaky fish in a tasty beer batter. The fried prawns were ok as was the green salad. The interior is typical pub. If you're not a beer drinker or a pub fan, you might find it a little grungy and musty. But at least the service at lunch was very friendly and welcoming. read more

I thought I'd just let this one go but than I think I should share my experience. I would have never believed it, if it didn't happen to me. I will try to make the story short, as much as I can, and concentrate on my main point. so, have you ever heard of a restaurant guest made fun of or shamed by a waitress for ordering up? Or for any reason? Well, believe it or not, it has happened to me in Britannia Arms. To begin with, this was my first ( and last ) time in Brittania Arms in this location. The other locations I have been to are Almaden and Cupertino. I always order 1 thing and 1 thing only - Fish and Chips with 2 pieces of fish. Never had any problems with anything at either locations. Here I am in BA in Capitola, ordering the very same thing, having a good time, well, having a good time until the waitress comes with my order and , for some reason, don't know what that reason was - was she drunk? high? forgot to take her medications? Anyways, for some reason starts laughing and making very rude comments like, " Oh, you eat so much!", "I have never seen a WOMAN ordering 2 pieces of fish before". She might have thought she was very funny but I found her extremely offensive. Wouldn't you? I really didn't want to make a scene. Ok, I promised to make the story short so when I asked for a manager, she told me she was a manager. Ok, than I asked for an owner or owner contact. Would you believe it, she told me she is an owner too! I wish I could have gotten her name. I was too furious and too upset at the moment. The only way I can describe her is an older woman ( who tries to look younger by wearing skimpy clothes which only make her look ridiculous), long black ponytail. 2 stars only because I feel sorry for the real BA owner. I was told he is a really nice man. I am sure I am not the only customer that waitress drove away from his restaurant. read more

It's disturbing to read some of the reviews of sexism and prejudice here, but I can only comment on my experience. I ordered a cheesesteak sandwich. While it wasn't labeled "Philly Cheesesteak" (not British enough?), that's exactly what it was, and a pretty good one too. It came with thick cut crispy fries. The waitress was, as someone sitting next to us put it, "always in motion". Literally, she would not stop as she dropped your plate of food off. Nothing wrong with that, I guess, but just be aware that it's that kind of place. So the beers came fast and we enjoyed our lunch, but I think what I liked most was sitting on the patio with an amazing view of the Capitola esplanade and Monterey Bay. read more

I believe when we went there was a basketball game on and everyone was having a good time. We had our dogs with us, so we sat outside and people watched. Went there for lunch. Was told they had good food. boy were they wrong. First of all it took forever to get the waitress attention even to get menu. We finally ordered, and waited another 30 minutes for the food to come. The fish and chips was a tasteless and laden with grease. Same for the shrimp that I ordered. Ended up peeling off the breading. While we were eating, two of the waitresses got into a verbal altercation right in front of us. That was bad, but the worst thing was my friend found a hair on his plate. For two meals, and a couple of drinks the bill came to $50. What a waste of money, and a beautiful day. Sunday I took a group of 10 friends (and their dogs) to eat on the patio at Britannia Arms in Capitola Village. It was a GREAT experience! I was a bit hesitant after reading the other reviews, but I was impressed and surprised by the service and the food. Our waitress was wonderful - friendly and so attentive. She kept our drink glasses full, and even brought a pitcher of ice tea to make sure we got enough. The ice tea was tasty and had a slight fruity hint. They have a huge selection of beer here... many that I never heard of before. We were all impressed with the amount of food that was on each plate. A few people took half their sandwich home because they couldn't finish it all. I ordered a corned beef sandwich and it was so stuffed with corned beef, it was hard to wrap my hand all the way around. The person next to me ordered fish and chips and there were three large pieces of fsh with plenty of chips (it actually fed two people nicely). Someone else ordered the fried zucchini appetizer. The zucchini was lightly coated, then fried so that the zucchini still had a bit of crispiness to it... just the way I like it. The view from the patio was awesome and we were all entertained by all the surfers coming and going from the beach. There are also heaters to keep you warm on chilly days. Did I mention the patio is also dog-friendly? Yup, we brought our dogs. We've all eaten at Britannia Arms in Aptos and this was better. We will return. My biggest complaint is that it is so hard to find parking in Capitola Village. read more

We got a patio seat which was great because inside the ambiance was not so good. Our waitress was wonderful, the hostess staff were average. We ordered nachos to start which were lovely. I was looking for a place to do some work with the view of the ocean. This seemed like a great spot! They even had an outlet outside so I could charge my computer! I order a meal which was fine, and a few minutes after I got it the waitress came out to ask if this pigeon was bothering me. I hadn't noticed it so I said it was fine and she preceded to tell me how it's a resident pigeon with a broken leg. Ok cool. A minute later she comes out with French fries for the bird, but the bird has flown away. A little later the bird comes back and lands next to my plate. Now this is too close for comfort. I shoo it away but it is clearly used to humans since the waitress hand feeds her French fries so she is unfazed. As a last effort I throw a French fry far away to get her to go away. Well. About a minute later I am engulfed in a flock of pigeons who are literally walking all over my phone and computer and eating the food off my plate. I'm panicking thinking about bird flu and getting pooped on and I wave my arms and scream and wave a napkin at them but they don't even care when I try to physically push them away. Meanwhile I'm wondering why the waitress who is BFFs with the bird is not coming to save me? I grab my stuff and run inside, where the entire restaurant bursts into uproarious laughter and they excitedly tell me that was "the funniest sh*t they've ever seen!" I'm sorry what? They saw this entire situation happen and just watched? Even the bartender and waitress were watching me get attacked and my food eaten. Literally 5 MINUTES later the waitress comes over and jokingly says "I'm so sorry. Should I replace anything?" Oh you mean half my meal that was eaten by pigeons because they're used to you feeding them? But the last thing I want is to spend time with these rude people as they continue to talk about it and laugh with each other. Now I get it, it was probably hilarious to see my flapping a napkin at 20 pigeons. But somebody could've helped? Especially an employee? Then the waitress brings my bill. And that is how I paid $15 to be attacked by birds and laughed at by a room full of people. Awesome Saturday! Stopped in for a beer yesterday while the live music was playing on the beach. Was told we couldn't sit on the patio b/c it was "full dining" there. We couldn't get a definition about how many dishes we had to order to comply with a 'full dinner.' Got a cup of clam chowder and it was a thick mass of white glop. The Santa Cruz Clam Chowder tasting festival has some great chowder recipes and NONE were like this mess. As a chef and native, I hope the tourists do not think this is representative of the chowder California serves b/c it is not. The location is the only positive feature. read more

This is easy! If you are in Capitola and want quality food and service; come here! They have an outdoor seating section which is awesome! Ocean views, waves, women and a great vibe. We felt like we never left home when we were eating! The owners are locals and have young kids so children are very welcome! The bar drinks were mixes purrrrfect, and the food came up super fast. An above average service joint. Most places in Capitola treat you like a disposable tourist but NOT here! This is a place we will be returning to! Great happy hour and try the Ruben Sandwich! With its premium location overlooking Capitola beach , The Brittania arms cooks up some of the best fish and chips we've had (including those we had in the UK) They use a generous portion fresh Atlantic cod, perfectly tender with just the right amount of firmness then fry them until the batter has just the right amount of golden color and crunch. The waitresses were super friendly, the outside seating overlooks the beach and on Sundays there's live Hawaiian style music. I believe the musicians are just local people coming out to play together. We have been to several locations of the Brittania Arms sampling the fish and chips in each one and this one at Capitola Beach is definitely the best in both food and atmosphere. read more

Horrible service! We were planning on Britannia Arms for dinner. Stopped in...and they said 45-60 min wait. We said ok, left our name and left to browse local shops since there was no room anywhere. Stopped back around 40 minutes later. They said "We called your name multiple times. We can put you back on the list but it's another 60-90 minute wait". Apparently the idiot doing the tables couldn't estimate time and we were punished. We left..ate at the wonderful new Sotola restaurant. While the bar is great, service is amazing and the atmosphere is everything you would expect... the security is extremely discriminatory. My girlfriend was in line for the bathroom and a rude female was inside and came out abruptly and hostile; which words were exchanged; however the security came at our group in an accusatory manner without even investigating or hearing both sides of the party. We were walkimg around the beach and stores in Capitola and we got hungry. We stopped in here and seen the variety of items on their menu. I got a nice cold modelo and a coke, they had ginger ale for my wife. She was not too hungry so she got chicken strips. These are not your basic frozen strips these were 5 big hand breaded chicken strips, she got full off of about 3-4 of them, very tasty! I got the french dip and onion rings. French dip tasted great and filled me up the knion rings were battered great and a good size, I was stuffed. Prices are fair and they have the games on the tv's. read more

I was so excited to see that Brittania Arms had opened up in Capitola, the Brit in San Jose is such a great and fun place. Was in Capiola on a day that the SF Giants were playing. Friend and I walked into the Brit, asked if they Giants game was going to be on their TV. I hadn't heard my friend asking a moment before I did..... the manager Andy yelled over his shoulder......"we heard you the first time, just wait a minute". When he saw that I had a cafe latte in a cup from a coffee shop in the village there, he looked and me and said, "you can't have that in here, give it to me. Maybe you should go to Starbucks where you bought your coffee and watch the Giants game", then he took my drink. I will never go back there again......and I have told all my friends this story, they will not patronize either. read more

BEWARE. Maybe he thinks it's funny to talk down to drunk girls but surprise, I wasn't yet he felt that customer service was more about him having an attitude than making sure I would ever want to do business here in the future.
