Having had our fill of Sand Bar and Zelda's, we were looking for a slightly more low-key place to grab a drink on Saturday. Britannia Arms fit the bill perfectly! When we arrived, there were no more than a dozen or so people spread throughout the bar. We quickly got the impression this was a place where regulars frequently found themselves, and it gave the bar a very welcoming, friendly vibe. We sat at the bar and enjoying peering at all the English football decorations. Our bartender was lovely - very friendly and attentive. She even refilled my bourbon soda without me having to ask... now that's service! She was also generous with her pour, which is always appreciated. Though we didn't try any of the food, we found Britannia Arms to be a lovely little pub, and I'll certainly be coming back when I revisit Capitola. read more

There was a waitress with an Irish accent who threw two menus on our table and didn't say hello. We said "hi, how're you?" and then she threw down cutlery still without saying a word to us. We walked out after since she was extremely rude. Now seeing another several 1 star reviews from Hispanic customers who said the staff was extremely nice to everyone but them, I can only assume they are prejudice after our encounter today (I am half Hispanic and half Black). Sad places like this still exist and treat people the way they do. The waitress was also chatting and laughing with the other tables, but then had an annoyed attitude with us? Odd. The restaurant was not busy so that's also not an excuse. Go to Zelda's instead! Better atmosphere, better food, and better customer service. read more

Craving fish n chips. Very disappointed in the Fish. Arrived and looked mouthwatering. Fried to golden perfection. Fries delish. However, the fish had zero seasoning. I found myself having to add a lot of salt. When I cook I season everything, the fish and the batter. The patio was nice, not to big and dog friendly. By the time I was done, the rush had died down yet I found myself having to track down the waitress for my bill. It may have been a single person ordering one meal, but I chose fish and chips over some other amazing food. Unless a party of two or more, you'll be ignored. Next time I'll have slice from Pizza My Heart or wait for Geisha Sushi to open. read more

I hadn't realized they were here. Right on the beach. Great view. We had a LARGE party (22 people). The staff was friendly and incredibly attentive. All the food was hot and served quickly. Quick refills as needed. They didn't do separate checks, but did do checks by groups of 4 which made it easy to sort out at the end. I had the fish and chips. Tasty, hot, and crispy. This is our second time visiting the Britannia arms we aren't local. Have to say both times we had the Irish Breakfast hits the spot. Today was extremely busy with The Warf to Warf Race and our server Irene was excellent, fast quick efficient and fun. We were craving calamari. My husband wanted a beer and we always wanted to check this out. It's straight up pub food, no frills. Friendly staff. When in Capitola... you gotta be outside where you can watch the people, right? Brittania Arms is that place. Right by the seawall, and a large outdoor patio, you can see it all. We dropped in for lunch during the Art and Wine festival weekend. Tons of people, yet we got seated rather quickly (ok, so we were there just before the lunch rush). I was in town with my two Border Collies so I popped in to ask if their patios were pet friendly which they are. Theres a patio area on the sidewalk out front and then another facing the beach which is where we were seated. Irene was my server and she quickly brought out my drink order and a water bowl for the dogs. I ordered Fish n Chips with a side order of mushy peas and everything was perfect from the tender fish with crispy batter to the hand cut chips, washed down with a pint of Boddingtons. Irenes son plays professional football (soccer) for Sunderland in England which is the rival city to my team Newcastle and they have his shirt displayed over by the toilets. Very cool pub. read more

Waited for an hour and a half to get our food! Terrible service. Waitress and waiter tried to memorize our order without jotting it down which lead to four plates not being served. Tried to get resolution from other employees who passed the buck. Even called the restaurant to ask about the delay as we were waiting for our food! We saw several parties who arrived after us get served before us! Couldn't help but wonder if it was because of our race (Black, Mexican and Asian) that we were being ignored. The food finally arrived but was a disappointment. Fish and chips were greasy with heavy batter and no flavor and they ran out of clam chowder at 5:30. What bothered me the most though was the absence of an apology and the clear avoidance and uncaring nature of staff. First, the server was nice and did a good job taking our order, bringing out drinks, and was friendly when correcting our bill when there was an error. The major complaint was that the Shepard's pie that was ordered was completely missing the mashed potatoes under the beef and cheese. This was a pretty big mistake and was afraid if we complained that something bad would happen to our food. We had a long day and just let it be, but was disappointed with the food quality. Unfortunately, that is not what I received from the dark-haired big male bartender with the attitude of Rue-paul. His insults to the customers do not make up for his inability to craft a good cocktail it only makes it worse. Not to mention, he only has one speed. "Slow and Rude." Omg!!! I came here to go to the beach but need to stop and have a drink. I met the person that help me named Andy and he was absolutely amazing. He took care of my friend and made a suggestion for me to try fish and chips. He bragged about how it is the best in North Cal and I even saw it as an award displayed on the wall. He made me and my friend a Cucumber Martini which was perfectly strong enough with glass of water. I ended up trying the fish here and it was the best I've ever had in the United States. Are used to live in London so fish and chips is one of my favorites. As many restaurants I have tried fish and chips were never the same back in the UK until I came here. I'm so thankful that I was able to experience such a nice and welcoming person like Andy to help take care of us. This is hands down one of the worst meals that I have ever eaten. I stopped by downtown, noticed this place was pretty empty but ignored those warning signs and stepped in anyway. I ordered a B.L.T. sandwich. Good god this was one of the worst sandwiches I've ever eaten. It was completely overloaded with bacon to a point where you can't really open your mouth wide enough to bite into it and the bacon tasted very FOUL. I couldn't stomach much of it at all. It tasted like the bacon was cooked on a grill that wasn't cleaned or fried in dirty/old grease, I dunno. But the bacon tasted very FOUL. The mayo for the sandwich actually comes on the side in packets. I mean seriously? A restaurant that can't make a B.L.T. with mayo? Opening that jar of mayo must be difficult. Is there an iron man around? Good grief. Do away with the plates and just hand the food out in a paper bag while you're at it. Let's keep it real on all levels. The food is expensive here. Way overpriced for what you get. Probably exploiting the customers visiting the beach. My meal was absolutely disgusting. I know that some places like the dive bar atmosphere and feel but this place was way below that imo. The only bright spot was the server. A blonde woman with a great personality and great service. The older bartender was RUDE. I was not wearing a shirt (it's on a beach) and he came over and in a very rude, short, and curt tone told me that I can't be in there without a shirt. "State law", he said and then walked off. I totally understand about the shirt thing but there were no posted signs and the server didn't even say anything to warn me. And this rude guy didn't even say "hey, sorry but.." or "excuse me, but...". It would have cost him nothing and it's customer service 101. I almost left but I was with family and they convinced me to stay. I borrowed an extra shirt from my father. Then I notice him being very sweet and cordial to a group of white women coming in. I'm an Asian guy and it reeked of passive racism. Never coming back again. And I'll tell my friends and family to stay away. I don't want anyone fired but people need to held accountable. read more

The fish and chips are one of the best though bar none. YET....I can't stand bartenders that are younger than me and treat me with snot nose disrespect. And even though $18 is the standard these days for 2 beers I just reminded myself why it's always better to buy a 6 pack a go sit on the beach. Also, initially since there's only like 8-10 tables outside you're not allowed to drink outdoors unless you order food. Lame since patrons want to enjoy the ocean and $18 is $18. read more

This is my second time here, it's been years since I was last here. But I really wanted British fish and chips. I don't have often but once in awhile it want some. The best I have ever had was in Gibraltar UK. Hugh, tender flaky fish, with a light crispy batter. Well that's not what I got, they were a decent size, and the appearance was good. I broke off a piece and put it in my mouth, I must have swallowed a Tbsp of warm oil. Ugh! I took 2 napkins wrapped the fish in them, they were drenched. I tried just to eat the fish on the inside. But on the plus side, we had the most pleasant waitress, she made it difficult to be upset about it. My husband had a cheeseburger, it looked delicious. He said it was fine. The service was good, it didn't take long to get our food. But if you have an English pub, work on making great fish and chips. In my opinion that partially what they are known for. read more
